Message from the Padre

This week we are celebrating the Fourth of July. It is a

day of parades, political speeches, fireworks and back yard barbe-

cues. But most of all it is a day of celebrating our independence, a

celebration of freedom, sovereignty and liberty, and to remember

and give thanks to those courageous people who brought freedom

to our nation. As we celebrate our nation's independence with

pride, joy and gratitude, we also conclude this year’s commemora-

tion of the Fortnight for Freedom, the fourteen days of prayer and

witness to our religious liberty.

Yes, the 4th of July resounds with most of the world as the commemoration of the United States’

Independence, an example of freedom and liberation from oppression. But for some of us today, freedom

means individual liberties to choose or to say whatever pleases them. But Jesus tells us differently. He

says, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” My dear friends, what good is freedom,

consecrated in the law, if we do not use the freedom to seek the truth and to speak out what we believe as

Christians. As Pope Benedict XVI once said, “Freedom is not only a gift… but with it…brings personal

responsibility.” This responsibility calls for the cultivation of virtues, self-discipline and a sense of respon-

sibility to defend our faith in truth.

Yes, we are Americans and we are also Catholics and we

are proud to be both… but in the eyes of God… we are first

Catholic. That is why when our religious freedom is threaten by

man-made laws, we need to speak up. Pope Francis has said,

“Every man and woman must be free to profess his or her faith.

Religious freedom is not only that of private thoughts or worship,

but it is a liberty to be lived both privately and publicly, accord-

ing to the ethical principles based on the teachings of Christ.” In

the light of both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis’ messages, we are then called to be witness to our

faith so that our country, our nation may be transformed into a place where the teaching of the Gospel will

one day prevail, not only in our values but also implemented in our laws.

As we celebrate Independence Day and the conclusion of the Fortnight for Freedom, let us give

thanks to those courageous men and women who brought freedom to our nation, and at the same time, let us

strive in God’s love to speak out the truth about our faith and not be afraid of whatever judgments directed at

us by those who oppose our values. Let us always remember that our freedom comes with a personal re-

sponsibility not only to ourselves, but also to our neighbors and most of all to God.

Fr. Joe

The Thirteenth Sunday in

Ordinary Time 2 Kings 4: 8-11, 14-16a

Romans 6: 3-4, 8-11

Matthew 10: 37-42

While Jesus in today’s Gospel does call us to sacrifice, his

emphasis (and that of the first reading) seems to be on the re-

wards that disciples can expect. Discipleship is not without

cost, but God’s gratitude is boundless. Let us listen today for

what God is asking each of us to do, and let us pray for the

willingness to do it without counting the cost.

The Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions

Community News

Each year dioceses around the country arrange special events to

highlight the importance of defending religious freedom. The

Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21, the vigil of the Feasts

of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, to July 4th, Independ-

ence Day. For more information please go to www.usccb.org.

Prayer for Religious Freedom

Father, we praise You and thank You

for Your most precious gifts of human

life and human freedom.

Touch the hearts of our lawmakers with

the wisdom and courage to uphold

conscience rights and religious liberty

for all. Protect all people from being

forced to violate their moral and

religious conviction.

In Your goodness, guard our freedom to

live out our faith and to follow You in

all that we do. Give us strength to be

bold and joyful witnesses.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

Amen
