From the From the From the From the Deacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's Laptop: : : : Parish Initiative on Joy of the Gospel - continued As we continue to unfolded the Parish Initiative on the Joy of the Gospel, we are reminded in the Gospel from last week (Matt: 13: 1-23) and this week (Matt 13: 24-43) about the sowing of seed, on the various types of soil and type of enemies that invade the soil and how these are related to all of us.

Pope Francis in his homily last weekend said: “This parable speaks to each of us today, as it spoke to the listeners of Jesus two thousand years ago. It

reminds us that we are the land where the Lord tirelessly throws the seed of His Word and His love. How do

we receive it? How is our heart? What type of ground do we offer it: a path, a stone, a thorn bush? It is up to

us to become good soil without thorns or stones, but instead cultivated with care, so that it can bring forth

good fruit for us and for our brethren”.

Father Gerald in his homily last Sunday also gave us the challenge to determine which type of “soil” we are. Additionally, he challenges us to decide how we can improve on changing the type of “soil” we are. These two homilies are the basis for Year-1 of our Parish Initiative –Personal Encounter with Jesus. Although the plans are not firm, the Committee on the Joy of the Gospel, made up of the various heads of the parish ministries, have started to put together a plan that will help all levels of “soil” to improve their situations. Since there are various levels of “soil” in our parish, the plans will be focused on each level and will be adjusted to the age and family type in order to give everyone in the parish some type of faith journey to expand their wisdom and knowledge.

Our first aim will be to establish sessions for the “soil” types. Those who are the “good soil”, and are regular Church goers and are already on the solid faith journey, will enhance their existing journey of reading scripture, praying and reading spiritual material. For those whose seed falls on the path and only go to Church out of obligation, we will through homilies, bulletin articles, the website and other means encourage them to start to pray more, to start to read scripture and to attend sessions that will help them in their journey of faith. For those whose seed falls on rocky ground who have left the Church out of frustration, we will approach them to see what we as a parish can do to help them return to Church. For those whose seed falls among the thorns and are angry or have had unhappy contact with the Church, we will try to help them in whatever way possible to reduce their anger and to reintroduce them to a truly welcoming, loving and compassionate Church and parish.

Within the “soil” types we will attempt to establish plans that are age and family-type related. Although we have some good programs for the children and the youth, there needs to be more and wider spread availability for the young adults, the senior, the singles, the married couples, the widows/widowers, and the divorced.

The next meeting of the Committee will be on this Sunday after the 11:00 AM Mass. As the planning continues, there will be more information provided through the parish’s existing media and enhancement of the parish library. Stay tuned!!!

If you have ideas or suggestion do not hesitate to let them be known to

Father Gerald, Deacon Bob or the parish office.

We need your help to make the plans better and to make them work.

SHARE YOUR VOICE AND SING PRAISE!

We invite all parishioners 5th grade and older to join us as we grow our 4th Sunday Contemporary Choir. We’ll be singing Sunday, July 27th at 11am Mass. We generally practice the Tuesday before, and arrive early before Mass to practice.

Volunteers needed to help SWAG fundraising!

SWAG Youth Ministry would like to invite all parishioners 16 years and older to volunteer to work concessions at UVA football games, concerts, etc. This is a great way for the kids to raise money for different activities (including their Uganda trip) and doesn’t require a consistent commitment to work. We sign up for events when we have volunteers.

DID YOU KNOW:

Fluvanna Habitat is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate sub-standard housing worldwide.

Habitat is NOT a giveaway program. Habitat houses are sold to families at no profit and financed with low interest loans, keeping mortgages low. In addition to paying a mortgage, homeowners invest their own labor, called sweat equity, into building their Habitat house.

Since its start in 1993, Fluvanna Habitat has built 16 houses in Fluvanna County. To find out if you might be eligible for a Habitat home, call Jenni Whitehead, executive director, on (434) 589-3752.

Construction on the next home is scheduled to start in early August and be completed by the end of November.

If you would like to volunteer your time to any part of the

construction process, please contact

Ralynn Welsh, volunteer coordinator, (434) 305-0166.

Our next semi-annual collection for Habitat is scheduled for the weekend of August 23-24.
