Polar Bears

My name is Kevin. I live in Canada, in a small town called Churchill, which is right near

the sea on the Hudson Bay. My favourite months of the year are October and November.

That’s when the polar bears come to town! Let me explain …

Polar bears live in very, very cold places around the North Pole. They live on the sea ice

and hunt seals and fish. In summer, the ice melts and the bears move onto land. They eat

anything they can find, like rats, eggs and fruit. There’s less food on land for them than

in the sea, so the bears wait for the weather to get cold again. Then they travel back to

the frozen sea ice to hunt for food. Today it takes longer for the sea to freeze because

temperatures around the world are rising. So even in October, the bears are still on land

and they’re very hungry! That’s why they walk into our town to look for food.

It’s important to know what to do when we see a bear, so we learn about it in school. We

mustn’t run away – we must walk to the nearest house and call the Bear Patrol. The Bear

Patrol has to take the bears to a special zoo out of town. They stay there until the sea

freezes again. Then helicopters carry the bears back to the sea ice.

I also like this time of the year because of Halloween, which is on 31 October. We dress

up and walk around town in our costumes. But we mustn’t wear white costumes because

maybe the Bear Patrol will think we are polar bears!

Grammar

Many years ago, people in African villages used drums to send messages to each other like “come home”, “strangers in the village” or “the river is rising”. Every village had its own special code of drumbeats for each message. These drumbeats helped people communicate over long distances. Here’s a story about an important drum message.

Once there was a girl called Aluna, who lived with her parents and brother Matu in a small village. Every week the men of the village and their sons went far away to hunt for food. Early one morning, Matu and his father left with the hunters, while the women were still sleeping. Suddenly a noise woke Aluna up. She looked out of the hut and saw a group of strange men walking around the village. Who were they?

Aluna was scared so she woke her mother up. “Look at those strangers outside. What are they doing?”

“Oh no! They’re trying to steal our goats!” her mother said. She quickly picked up her drum and sent a message to her husband and son and the other men from the village. Matu and his father were not far away when they heard the drums. The message was “Thieves! Help! Come back!” The men ran quickly back to their village. The thieves heard the drumbeats but they didn’t understand them. They were worried, but they didn’t want to leave without the goats.

The men of the village came back just in time. They chased the thieves away with their bows and arrows. Thanks to the drums, the thieves didn’t take anything.
