Thursday August 15 was the Year 10 ‘Report Day’

Well the special day for Year 10, a day

where students received their reports,

attended presentations and

participated in report analysis is

over for another year.

During the day students discuss

results and analyse their report in a

constructive manner to support HSC

subject choices they have made for

next year as well as consider their

progress before embarking on the final

months of Year 10.

Conducting interviews with all Year 10 students combined with the Parent Teacher Night on the

same day allows us to tailor a non-judgemental learning plan specific to the individual student while assisting them in setting realistic goals in a caring and supportive environment.

The Semester One Reports for the 118 Year 10 students, with a mean Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 were very solid and contained numerous highlights.

The individual results were equally impressive with:

20 students received a GOLD Principal’s Award by achieving a GPA of 4.2 or above.

28 students received a SILVER Principal’s Award by achieving a GPA of 3.7 or above.

44 students received a REC (Respect, Effort, Challenge) award by having 100% of their profile as Always or Usually participating in their learning.

International Students to Avalon Primary School

Whilst the Year 11 cohort was shooshing down the slopes in the Snowy Mountains, four of our

newly enrolled International Study Abroad students spent three days assisting the teachers at

Avalon Primary School.

This alternative program has been running, with the assistance of Avalon Primary, for four years

now and each year the international students say that it is one of their most favourite

experiences whilst they are here.

Their immersion into Avalon Primary coincides with International Week and the teachers there

say that their students thoroughly enjoy interacting with these wonderful young adults. As you

can see the experience is very hands-on enabling our students to become mentors and helpers

to students from K- 6.

Well done Maxime, Bianca, Giulia and Giorgia, who were not only ambassadors for Germany, Brazil and Italy, but also represented their new school with pride.

Last term, 29 Barrenjoey students from Years 7 & 8 performed in the Sydney North Dance

Festival which is held at Glen Street Theatre.

The junior group performed 1 item called 'Never come back again' by the artist Austin Plaine

while the senior group performed a number called 'The road not taken', a poem by Robert Frost.

Both of the groups performed beautifully with many parents enjoying the festival. Miss Yakich

and Miss Lara were extremely proud of both of the groups as they showed excellent team work

and courage dancing on stage in such a professional production. Well done to all of the

Barrenjoey dancers.

YEAR 11 SKI CAMP – WHAT A WEEK!

On Sunday 4th August 88 students and 6 teachers heading off to the Jindabyne Sport and Rec

Camp for the Annual Year 11 Snow Camp!

The Sport and Rec snow program is based out of Blue Cow - Perisher. The students Ski or

Snowboard for 5 days participating in a 2hr lesson and free ski time each day.

Many of the students have never seen the snow before which always makes the camp so much

more special.

This camp we experienced a variety of conditions including warm blue bird days and a huge

storm from bringing heavy winds and snow fall all the way into Jindy.

At night the students had fun participating and interacting with students from Kotara High School

in a Trivia night, Jindy markets and Movie nights.

All in all the camp was a huge success and created life long memories!

Thank you to Ms Wilson, Mrs Harrington, Mr Flood, Mr Hardwicke and Mr Corrigan who

assisted me in running the camp.

Sunday the fourth of August Year 11 packed their bags heavy with ski jackets, thermals,

gloves and 2-minute noodles ahead of the long seven-hour bus ride to Jindabyne. The bus

ride consisted of many weather checks anticipating the snow for the week to come,

nevertheless we arrived at Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre to blue sky and excited

students.

We started early on Monday with 5:30am wake ups ensuring we were the first on the slopes,

as we crammed into the ski tube with skis, poles, boots, helmets and snowboards the

excitement of chatter and laughs covered the sound of the running tube.

For many it was exciting to see the snow for the first time, for others it was the anticipation

to get back on the slopes for a new season. We split into groups and had lessons each

morning to prepare us for the rest of the day’s free skiing. Monday night we were eager for

showers, a fresh change of clothes and of course, dinner. Tuesday was much the same with

blue skies and lessons improving all our skiing and snowboarding.

It was a quiet night on Tuesday watching movies and being very thankful for Ms Harrington’s

Woolworth's trip bringing back many packets of Mi Goreng for a second dinner. By

Wednesday the weather started to pick up with light snow. It was much of a recovering day

for Year 11 as the seats on the ski tube where prime real-estate for many, a few injuries

played out on Wednesday but spirits were still high as news spread there was going to be

fresh powder for Thursday. As Thursday arrived so did the snowball fights, making of

snowmen and snow angels, to say the least, the fresh coat of powder left everyone in awe.

We where all keen to get out on the slopes and a lot of us were feeling confident in our

skiing and snowboarding abilities.

By 3:30pm it was time to abroad the ski tube on our way back to camp, today we weren't so

excited to be going back to camp, the snow was just too good to leave. Thursday night we

packed our bags for the next day of skiing and snowboarding and where all a little bit sad to

be saying goodbye to Jindabyne.

The snow was prime on Friday, however, the weather got the best of us with 90 kilometre

winds the lifts where shut, with luck the T-bar was open allowing for us to get in a good few

hours of fresh snow skiing and snowboarding. As we boarded the bus that afternoon

emotions gratitude was felt by many, the week could not have been better, the smiles,

laughs and fun made everything so memorable. A huge thank you must be said to all the

teachers, Ms Wilson, Ms Harrington, Mr Moylan, Mr Flood, Mr Hardwicke and Mr Corrigan for

making this week unforgettable.

From all of Year 11, thank you!

SUSTAINABILITY AT BARRENJOEY

By Ben Ritchie

ARTIST OF THE WEEK

TransportationAlthough it appears ‘cyclist’ is slowly becoming a derogatory term, cycling

is still a much more environmentally efficient mode of transportation.

Don’t be a princess and get your mum to drive you to school every day,

find a friend to meet up with along the way and make your own way to

school, or even walk (of course for both options it’s better to bus it if you

live a long distance away). Parents, if you do choose to start cycling,

please, just chill out with the ‘drag reduction’ - no-one wants to see

anyone in a Lycra body suit.

There are still other great ways of transportation; buses, carpooling,

UberPool, walking etc.

Electric cars are also great, even if they are rather expensive.
