Selected Case Studies: PLANNING FOR CHANGE IN AN UNCERTAIN POLITICAL CLIMATE

CHALLENGE An Australian-based international gold mining company caused concern in Indonesia’s 2014 political year as the country wrapped up legislative elections and prepared to hold its presidential election. With elections fast approaching, the company realized that its stature could be dramatically affected by new political configurations, policy trends, and distribution of power in the wake of a new president, cabinet, and supporting political parties in the House of Representatives.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners conducted a political mapping study to identify stakeholder significance and roles in the post-election political climate. Our team also mapped each person and institution that could potentially have decision-making power in the new government, particularly with regards to the mining sector.

RESULTS The company gained an in-depth insight on the post-election climate, and formed a concrete plan for targeting specific stakeholders in order to maintain sustainability.

Selected Case Studies: EASING TRANSITION FOR NEW FOREIGN BANK OWNER

Name of client withheld as Kiroyan Partners is bound by Non-disclosure Agreement

CHALLENGE A foreign investor acquired a prominent Indonesian bank, which raised public concern about the risks associated with foreign ownership of domestic banks. Chief among the concerns were reputational risk, stakeholder pressure, policy changes, and potential unrest within both the foreign and domestic units.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners helped the client assess strategic issues, conduct a stakeholder analysis, and build a list of recommendations for dealing with a variety of potential challenges. We also helped the client develop an internal and external communications strategy to help handle future issues.

RESULTS The client benefited from a complete strategic communications plan that equipped it to address any present or future concerns.

Selected Case Studies: PR COACHING FOR A NEWLY INDEPENDENT ENTITY

CHALLENGE A major domestic bank spun off its sharia unit in order to comply with central banking regulations, in turn leaving the unit to its own devices. In its new state of independence, the unit found itself struggling to manage public relations and management issues.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners helped the client develop public relations acumen through mentoring and organizing press campaigns, as well as media training, monitoring, and visits.

RESULTS After just one year, the unit was fully equipped to handle public affairs in a modern business environment.

Selected Case Studies: BETTER STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS THROUGH IN-DEPTH CSR TRAINING

Name of client withheld as Kiroyan Partners is bound by Non-disclosure Agreement

CHALLENGE A diversified mining and metals company wanted to improve its understanding of CSR in order to plan and implement programs that followed ethical business practices and ensured sustainable growth through stakeholder engagement.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners helped the client educate and train senior staff in each business unit on CSR development, implementation, and communication. Topics included stakeholder management, from identification to engagement, issues specifically affecting the company’s industry of mining, sustainability reporting, and social responsibility standards.

RESULTS The company’s staff improved its skills and knowledge of CSR, and was able to more constructively interact with stakeholders.

Selected Case Studies: FIXING PAST MISSTEPS FOR BETTER GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

Name of client withheld as Kiroyan Partners is bound by Non-disclosure Agreement

CHALLENGE A leading polyester manufacturer encountered difficulties obtaining government approval of its debt restructuring. The company’s plans were hampered by the poor reputation of former leadership, whose tenure had tarnished the company in the eyes of government officials.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners built a strategic media campaign composed of media workshops, editor briefings, op-ed placements, seminars and media monitoring analysis to place the company in a more favorable public position and improve its socio-political status, thereby allowing the government to make a more objective decision.

RESULTS The resulting media campaign allowed the company to reach a number of key government officials, and, through a variety of avenues that were previously closed, restructure its debt more smoothly.

Selected Case Studies: SECURING FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

Name of client withheld as Kiroyan Partners is bound by Non-disclosure Agreement

CHALLENGE Through a merger and acquisition process, a foreign company became a minority owner of an asset that was later entangled in a crisis that exposed the new owner to risks that threatened its operations elsewhere in Indonesia.

OUR APPROACH Through a combination of public affairs, media strategy, stakeholder analysis and issues management, Kiroyan Partners’ team of experts aimed to responsibly and swiftly extricate the foreign company from the situation.

RESULTS The client’s issue was resolved, leaving all parties, including NGOs and the surrounding communities, satisfied.

Selected Case Studies: TURNING LITIGATION INTO AN OPPORTUNITY

CHALLENGE A leading textile producer faced reputational risk after one of its employees was charged with theft. Although the company believed its staff member was innocent, it did note that the prosecution was marked by several inconsistencies that made investors skeptical of the company’s operations.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners devised a public relations strategy designed to increase media coverage and public awareness on the case and, in turn, ensure a fair court proceeding.

RESULTS The media attention was appropriate and directed away from the company, which resulted in a fair trial for the company’s employee, allowing the business to maintain its reputation in the marketplace.

Selected Case Studies: STAYING RELEVANT THROUGH STAKEHOLDER IDENTIFICATION

CHALLENGE As part of its commitment to social responsibility, a local mining company wanted to identify its main stakeholders, who were key parties in its mining operations.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners thoroughly researched and analyzed the mining company’s operations and market to identify key stakeholders, along with the overall perception stakeholders had about the company. Our analysis considered the subject area’s local context, as well as the background information of key stakeholders.

RESULTS The company was able to build a solid, harmonious relationship with stakeholders, thereby cementing its social license to operate and ensure the sustainability of its operations.

Selected Case Studies: BETTER REPUTATION THROUGH BETTER CSR

CHALLENGE A major national bank in Indonesia sought to improve its CSR performance in an effort to advance its reputation.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners conducted a systematic evaluation of the bank’s CSR programs and implementation. We found that although the organization’s CSR programs were comprehensive, their implementation lacked direction. They also struggled against ineffective execution and communication.

RESULTS Our evaluation report outlined several areas in need of improvement, including an expansion of their CSR initiatives and a clearer alignment of programs with stakeholder concerns.

Selected Case Studies: SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH COMMUNITY SUPPORT

CHALLENGE A major precious-metal mining project was finally launching after a decade of waiting, during which the Contract of Work changed hands several times and the surrounding communities grew skeptical of the project’s value.

OUR APPROACH Kiroyan Partners performed an in-depth study of community perception and needs via extensive field research. Through our work, we were able to build the foundation for sustainable community development programs.

RESULTS The mining company benefitted from a comprehensive blueprint of long-term community development programs that would, in the long run, lead to sustainable business.
