Gordon has had 3 managers. The first he talked his way out of, thesecond he bought his way out of andnow his present managers are AlbertGrossman and John Court.

Anyhow, let's eavesdrop on myconversation with Gordon Lightfoot.QUESTION: Do you have to be inspir-ed to write music or do you sit downand force yourself to think about it?ANSWER: It never hits you like a boltof lightning like a lot of people think. That's just a romantic view. I have tosit down and think about it before Iwrite.QUESTION: How do you classify yoursongs?ANSWER: There ain't no label on itand there's a lot of people hard-pres-sed that want to put a label on it. It'sjust music, my music, and it doesn'tfit into any category.QUESTION: Who is the worst audienceto play for?ANSWER: Taverns and Bars. That'swhere you start. Di d you know thatHarry Belefonte used to sing at theClub Norman, here i5 years ago?QUESTION: What advice do you haveto give to aspiring young performers?ANSWER: First of all to get this busi-ness of Canada being a drag, out oftheir heads, because if somebody's gotsomething to say, it's going to beheard. You've just got to find some-

thing to say, that's all. They've alsogot to make it a 24 hour a day effortand not say things like "I'll be a tea-cher so I'll have something to f01back on." If you've got to be a per-former, do it right and do it on yourown terms, then you'll be yourself. Inthe long run it will pay off, and don'tworry about making money, worryabout being good first. Honesty isalso important.

Gordon Lightfoot is a sensi-tive man in a constant state of change, who is very concerned with his imageas a performer. He truly deserves allthe success he has received and muchmore.

"CHEER" - 24 HOURSFOR LEAMINGTONLeamington: CJSP has been granteda power increase to 10,000 from 1000watts, daytime only at 710 kcs. Inaddition, they'll be using the 730 kcchannel for sunset to sunrise opera-tion at 250 watts. This means theywill be changing from a daytime onlystation to 24 hour a day operation, but because of BBG rules that stipu-late that each frequency use a differ-ent set of call letters, CJSP will bedropped. In the daytime it will beCHYR and at night CHIR. So as notconfuse listeners, both call letterswill be pronounced "Cheer".

The daytime signal of "Cheer"will extend 260 miles east and westfrom Leamington. The increase inpower calls for an increase in staff. The new operation is looking for 2more on -air personalities and anothernewsman. Because of the operationgoing full power the first week inMarch, Lou Tomasi, assistant manag-er, will be accepting applicationsonly until the end of January.

Lou has also extended an in-vitation to radio stations and to Can-adian recording artists to submit con-gratulatory tapes to the station. Hesuggests the following phrases beincluded: "Cheer Radio", "CheerfulChannel Seven", "24 Hours a day"and whatever ad-libbing necessary.

He spent hourstaping his voice and studying theproper voice presentation. A coupleof years later when he moved south toVictoria, and while attending schoolhere, he took a correspondence coursefrom the International School Of Show -business. After graduating from LesterPearson Secondary School in NewWestminister he took another radiocourse, this time from the NationalInstitute of Broadcasting, in Van-couver. Armed with all this talent andconfidence he went job hunting. Firstbreak came from CJDC Radio and TVin Dawson Creek. He worked the earlymorning show, early evening show, plus continuity and TV news. STONES "A" SIDENOT FOR SASKATOONSaskatoon: The Rolling Stones newsingle "Let's Spend The Night To-gether" is being given the cold shout-er treatment at CFQC. Even thoughit is the "A" side it is not being pro-grammed on the "Walt Edwards" show. This was decided by `QC's panel onmusic. As a result "Ruby Tuesday"is being given the exposure. Initialreaction has been fair. Says WaltEdwards, "I Think the Stones haveexperienced a slight decline in theirpopularity." He also writes "Afterlistening to both sides there is nodoubt about "Night Together" beingthe side. Nevertheless, CFQC is notprogramming the "A" side". Thereason, of course, is the lyrics.

The secondMonkee album is off and running. Janeen is be-ginning to get orders fa the new Beatle singlewhich won't be released until February.

Down Pointe Claire way, B. Bryansof Ted's Records & Hobbies, has "Kind Of ADrag" listed as top seller. "Someday Fool"and the flip "It's Too Late" are getting equalbilling. "Pretty Ballerina", "98.6" and theSeekers' "Georgy Girl" all get honourable men-tion. The Monkees newest LP is the big one.

Although he has writ-ten two books which contained car-toon drawings of his own, his newtalents only came to light with thedisclosure that Watts had actually de-signed and executed the backlinercartoon illustrations and captions onthe soon to be released new Stones'album.

One of the books that Wattshad written is titled "Ode To A High-flying Bird" which traced the careerof Charles Christopher "Yardbird""Bird" Parker from the success ofKansas City to his death in NYC. Theother book is "The Zoo Of Flags"which contains colour drawings ofanimals from all over the world, withrhyming couplets for each. Both booksare expected to be published in theU.S. and Canada by early Spring.

SPICE ARRANGEMENTSFOR CABOT'S ALBUMMGM Records is doing an all out pro-motion on Sebastian Cabot's "AndMostly They Sing". Irving Spice waschosen to write the arrangements forCabot's forthcoming LP because ofthe beautiful charts he wrote for thePhilips LP. "The Immortal Songs OfBob Dylan".

WHILE IT WAS NICE tohear from disc jockeys and recordpeople, I am now drawing a great dealof mail from the teenaboppers. I feelthat I should make some comment, andit is this. THIS COLUMN is not an"advice to lovelorn and teenagers introuble column", and you kids willjust have to stop writing about yourproblems to me. This is a very im-portant column, and I can't wastespace answering your questions. (E d:Please madam, you're spoiling the im-age of the magazine!) HOWEVER....Afew of these letters have been veryinteresting, and I find that I can twistthem around to serve my own purpose,so I will, from time to time, answer aFEW in my column. Miss R.G. writes,"Why don't Canadian radio stationsplay more Canadian records?" Shegoes on to tell me how her favouritegroup recorded, and when the recordcame out, the radio stations wouldn'tplay it. MY ANSWER!!! What's NEW...

my dear young lady? Canadian radiostations broadcast in Canadian. Inmany cases that's where it ends. TheBBG gives these stations the right toplay anything they wish. They find it

easy and convenient to play FOREIGNRECORDS. Your wishes as a listener(and a Canadian) are their last con-cern, and obviously the last concernof the BBG in Ottawa. If there was

any GOOD reason for a radio stationto play your record, THEY WOULD.HOW DARE YOU accuse this radiostation of being UN -CANADIAN. HOWDARE YOU ever infer that the recordSHOULD have been played becauseyou liked it. HOW DARE YOU expressa desire, as a listener. My advice toyou is to STOP listening to that sta-tion, and recruit your friends to NOTBUY THE PRODUCTS that this sta-tion advertises. THIS IS MY PERSON-AL OPINION. If you are really as an-gry as you say you are, than you candrop a line to: Canadian programming,Board of Broadcast Governors, Ottawa,Ontario. Tell them you would like tohear more Canadian records on Can-adian radio. If more young people com-plained, then the stations that are notplaying your favourite records wouldbe asked to state exactly WHY! (Ed:Well Miss C. you've done it again!!!Things were really getting quiet a-round the RPM offices, but we can

I know that many young peopleare looking for a. Centennial project. Why not organize a "Boost CanadianTalent" campaign and start writingletters to the BBG. You just mightget some action.

I HAVE BEEN TOLD thatBelleville and Brockville are gettingonly the very best Canadian groupsavailable. If you want to see talentat its finest. You can depend on theBelleville and Brockville Kon-tikiclubs. If you want to know who thereal WINNERS are, then check andbook the groups that play Bellevilleand Brockville. Any group that doesn'tplay Belleville and Brockville justisn't worthy of being called a TOPGROUP!!!!

I HAVE BEEN TOLD thsI am not to review or hype singles imy column. I have been reminded thfRPM does not pick or review recordsTHEREFORE (and keeping that i

mind) I would like to say that the neStitch In Tyme record is one of tlbest records of its kind I have heain a long time. I think that this yesion of this tune (and right off tiBeatle LP too) isn't as good as theBeatles, but is still an excellent re-cord that should be played by everyradio station in Canada. That is myown opinion, and no matter what thepolicy of RPM may be, I am endorsingthe airplay of this record. I suggestthat if a station is not playing thisrecord, they should dust off their copyand give it another listen. This re-cord's a MUST. It is on the Yorkvillelabel (named after Canada's bestknown village, in Toronto) and promocopies are available from Arc Records. The name of the record is "Got ToGet You Into My Life" by the StitchIn Tyme.

WHILE I'M AT IT Afterreading the item in last weeks RPMabout the Guess Who internationalsuccess, I gave "His Girl" anotherlisten, and I think this one could bea winner for this group. The GuessWho we, gettingrnhAVAOSSACEngland and throughout the world. Agreat deal of the credit should go toBob Burns who so aptly handles theiraffairs.

IS IT TRUE that a Can-adian label is going to be acceleratedinto an international GREAT? Therumour is that the NEW money isCANADIAN. I will keep you posted.(Ed: Do that!)

THE STACCATOS preview-ed their newest release for some peo-ple recently, and I got a report backthat "Single Man" will be a TOPTEN record. Everywhere you go theyare talking about the Staccatos. I justdon't believe a group can be THATgreat! (Ed: Believe it, or better stillreserve your comment till you seethem.)

AREN'T YOU EXCITEDthe RPM Awards issue? It is theNEXT RPM that will tell us who allthe winners are. I think that many ofthe catagories will be a close race, but one thing I can assure you of. Thetabulation of the votes will be 100%ACCURATE. There isn't any doubtin my mind that Old Ed: will personal-ly supervise all the returns to makesure that there are no clerical errorsin such a close contest! (Ed: We doour best, Ellie.)

GIGMOBILE BUSINESS FLOURISHESToronto: Akron Express has had avery good year in transporting groupsand their equipment to and from gigs. Many of the groups have -taken advan-tage of the "personalized chauffeur"firm and have even commissionedAkron to deliver them as far as NewLiskeard, Ottawa, and many otheroutside points.

The Stitch In Tyme have beenconstant users of these facilities forgigs in and around Toronto. Othergroups using Akron are E.G. Smithand The Express and Blues Councils.

In view of the increased de-mand to service local groups, plansare now underway to increase thefleet of Akron vans.

Well, I'm just so excited aboutresponse to the Odie Workman single,"Take This Heart Of Mine" that Iasked Cousin Ed: if I could devotemy whole column to Odie and his pro-ducer Bruce Shaver. First off I wantto let you see a few of the Sounding

ODIE WORKMAN

Board forms that were returned.AL HEBERT-CKBC-Bathurst"Our pick to click, in country music."DOUG HOBBS-CKOX-Woodstock"This record has a true country sound. Withairplay in the right places it should do well."STEVE GLEN-CHOK-Sarnia"The record has been on OK's top fifteenchart for the post four weeks and has beengetting tremendous response. Definitely a re-cord that will hit top Canadian charts."

It all started for Odie when apromoter of smaller artists and labels,Bruce Shaver, cottoned to Odie's tal-ents and decided to take him underhis wing and record him professional-ly. So off they went to Nashville andStarday Studios where Odie mixed wellwith the great talents of Tommy Hilland the Starday musicians. First re-lease for Odie was "Jacka Built AHouse" on Bison Records, a labelowned by Bruce. The reaction acrossthe country was favourable and servedto set Odie up for a much larger re-sponse to his release "Take ThisHeart Of Mine", this time on theSparton label.

It's been a long haul for BruceShaver, who was born on a wheat farmin Alberta and was practically bornwith a love for country music. Brucenow lives in Aylmer, Ontario and hisone great desire is to see country mu-sic, become more a part of Canadianlife. Bruce is always on the lookoutfor new Canadian country talent togive a boost up the ladder of success.

PROPHETS HEADLINE FORTCAMPBELL SHOWFt. Campbell Kentucky: The Prophets,America's top gospel -rock group, re-cently headlined a spectacular twohour show at Fort Campbell's WilsonTheatre. This is a first for gospelmusic at an army base. Negotiationswere made by Prophet's manager BuzWilburn, Chaplain and Special Ser-vices of the army. The audience in-cluded recruit, career soldiers, armyfamilies, military civilians and battleweary troops just returned from thefront lines in Viet Nam.

The Celestials, an all girlgroup from Lexington, provided thefeminine charm for the show.

The Prophets and Chaplain Curt Bowers visitwounded troops just returned from Viet Nam inthe critical wards at Ft. Campbell's base hos-pital. Because many of the troopscouldn't make it to the theatre, theProphets and Celestials made a tourof the critical wards and did much toraise the moral of the wounded.

ETERNALS TO TOURCANADASault Ste. Marie: Ron Paley of thepopular Winnipeg group, The Eternals, dropped into the CJIC studios for achit-chat with Norm Blakely. Thegroup has been having a great dealof success with their Quality releaseof "Girl In The Window". During theinterview it was disclosed that thegroup had spent months planning aproduction number out of their "BornOf Hate" which turned out to be the"B" side.
