ST. BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX CHURCH BRADFORD, PA CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF BRADFORD JULY 15, 2018

As we look about our community, our world, more and more we find it difficult for people to volunteer for

anything. All of us have heard the excuse – “I do not have time” - and might have even used this excuse. If

we are not careful, we may become a people, a nation, and a world that is “ME” orientated.

Let us listen carefully to the first reading from Saint Paul and the words of Jesus: Amos was happy being a

tender of his flock, but as he tells Amaziah, who did not like Amos and what he was saying: “I was a

shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. The Lord took me from following the flock, and said to me, ‘Go,

prophesy to my people Israel.’”

Saint Paul says much the same thing: “In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who

accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, so that we might exist for the praise of his glory….”

In the gospel, Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two. You and I are a chosen people and a

sent people. When did all this happen to us? At the time of our Baptism, at that moment, we were placed into a personal

relationship with Jesus and that relationship hopefully has grown over time.

As you and I live in this world we are called to make a difference - just as Amos did, just as Saint Paul did, just as the Twelve

Apostles did. Why? Like all of them, we are disciples and are called to carry on the work of Jesus. We are called to make

our parish a welcoming place, which means we make it alive.

The church has to be more than a revolving door that we pass

through; it has to be one that empowers us to be different.

Being a disciple of Jesus does not permit us to be complacent.

At one time or another we may have said, “I do not get

anything out of Mass. It is boring.” But we have to ask

ourselves the question: “What do we bring to Mass?” So let us

strive to be active participants, not only at Mass, but in all that

we do for the parish, our schools, and our community.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS Do you "overtalk"? Instead of saying, "Honey, my mom went in and the doctor diagnosed varicose veins. She¹s going to have to get them stripped, which will make it very difficult for her to walk for a couple of weeks. As you know, she lives all alone now, and the only person who can help her is Mrs. Jenkins, who just visits twice a week, on Thursdays and Fridays. Mom¹s going to need more help than that."

Instead, try: "Honey, my mom is having surgery next week and needs some time to recover. Do you mind if she stays with us for a few days?" Keep it short.

WORD OF LIFE "I believe that life is a sacred gift of God and should be treated as such." ~Charlie Stenholm, U.S. Representative

23rd ANNUAL DIAPER DRIVE IN JULY Pregnancy Counseling Services, staffed by Catholic Chari-ties Counseling and Adoption Service, helps expecting women and their newborn infants. We are a United Way member agency that provides assistance to individuals of all faiths in the form of free disposable diapers, infant cloth-ing and hygiene products (baby shampoo, baby wash, dia-per ointment and wipes). Donations of these items can be dropped off in the box by the front door of St. Bernard Church or brought to the Parish office during the month of July.

Please help us touch and nurture the new lives that God has so richly blessed us with. Monetary donations should be made payable to Catholic Charities and sealed in an enve-lope marked “Catholic Charities—Diaper Drive” and put in the collection or taken to the Parish Office.

The Bradford Council #403 of the Knights of Columbus will meet monthly on the 2nd Tues-day at 7:00 PM in the Conference Room at the parish office. All Council members are urged to

attend, and new members are most welcome to attend.

Any Catholic male who is at least eighteen years old and an active member of his parish is most welcome to join us! You can contact the parish office for more information, or just visit www.KofC.org/JoinUs on the web and follow the easy instructions. When you come to the blank labeled “preferred Council #” enter #403. Remember guys: You are born a man. You become a Knight.

Festa Italiana Bakers LaStella Auxilliary will be making the for the Italian Festival again this year. We will be working on wans in the Italian Club clubrooms on Saturday, Aug. 4th, Monday and Tues-day Aug. 6th & 7th, prepping at 8 and starting at 9 am. If you are interested in helping, please call Judy Brown at 598-0749 for more information.

FaithLife ceases publication;

nwpaCatholic.com launched

FaithLife newspaper ceased publication on June 24. Parish-ioners are encouraged encouraged to sign up for the new Diocesan free bi-weekly e-newsletter that will be coming in the near future. Register to receive the e-newsletter at

https://www.eriercd.org/news/.

NATIONAL NEEDS COLLECTION Next week, we will take up the National Needs Collection. Right now, over 40 percent of the dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this collection helps this appeal and others that seek to meet the needs within our nation. Please prayerfully consider your contribution.

There will be a 5 pm meeting at Ritchie

Hall on Monday July 16th to discuss and

plan a Fall Social/Breakfast to be held there on Sun-

day, September 23rd after the 8 am mass. All interested

in helping are encouraged to attend.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Each time you see the word “volunteer” in the Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors or Altar Servers schedule that means you are needed! We have openings that need to be filled. Please call the Parish Office at 362-6825 to let us know when you can help.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Jesus sent out His apostles without a lot of “things” because THINGS distract. We collect, argue about and protect our “things.” We even ignore each other because we have “things” to do. What “things” are separating you from your family?

NEW BIBLE STUDY

STARTING IN SEPTEMBER

We are revisiting Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come, an intriguing study that shows how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the king-dom of heaven. Here you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. Contact the parish office to sign up for the class. We will be meeting at Ritchie Hall on Wednesdays starting in September. Books will be $24.95 + s/h. Schedule & final cost will be announced later.

Newcomers welcome! If you already have a book, come repeat the experience!

Visit www.osvonlinegiving/1845, our parish web site for on-line giving, to sign up and begin contributing in this convenient way to your parish.
