Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 17, 2016

Saint Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus' most celebrated disciples. The Gospels tell us that Jesus cleansed her of "seven demons." She became his close friend and was most prominent during his last days, being present at his crucifixion, his burial, and was the first reported per-son to see Him after his Resurrection when she received a special commission from Him to tell the Apostles of his res-urrection, for which she is often called

‘the apostle of the Apostles.’ During the papacy of Pope Paul VI the Vatican rejected her early identification as prostitute and adulteress, perpetuated by much Western medieval Christian art where she is depicted as having long hair which she wears uncovered down over her shoulders. An offering is traditionally included with the request for Mass intentions, and cards are available to give to the persons for whom the Mass is offered or to their family. JOIN US THIS THURSDAY EVENING FOR PART 2 Padre Pio: Miracle Man is a dramatic film on the

life of the famous stigmatic monk (physically bore the wounds of Christ), and saint. This major feature film drama captures the Capuchin friar’s intense faith and devotion, and deep spiritual concern for others, as well as his great compassion for the sick and suffering. It dramatizes the frequent attacks of the Devil on him, as well as the persecution he suffered at the hands of people, including those in the Church. The many miracles that he performed are also highlighted, as well as his deep humility, charity and sense of humor. THIS SUMMER...WHEN YOU COME TO MASS...ARE YOU DRESSED TO GO TO THE BEACH OR TO CHURCH? A primary goal when we participate in Litur-

gical Celebrations is to bring glory to God. If we dress in such a manner that someone is focusing on us instead of Christ, we have not met this goal. Par-ticipating at Mass is not a time of self-expression, but rather a time for our deepest expression of devotion and reverence to our God and the absence of self. As a rule of thumb, think to yourself: “If my Grand-mother saw me going to Mass wearing what I have on, what would she say?” That may sound a bit silly but it captures the essence.
