The next EU Commission under EP scrutiny On 10th September, the incoming EU Commission
President Ursula von der Leyen proposed a new
college of Commissioners. In the meantime, the
European Parliament is in the process of assessing
the proposed candidates.
It did not come as a surprise that the Members of
the European Parliament fully endorsed today’s chief
of Agriculture, EU Commissioner Phil Hogan. With
his deep knowledge, his proven record of success,
his commitment to trade and his unrivalled
diplomatic skills, he will head the EU trade portfolio
in difficult times.

EU Dairy: Shaping the European Landscape
IN 2 WEEKS !

European Dairy Association
#idfwds2019 in #Istanbul opened by Dr Judith
Bryans @FIL_IDF #milkislife @skivumbum hanna
sondergaard from @Arla_Foods "I am wearing
boots today, because we have to become activists
for sustainable dairy - as do our farmers every day"
@1GeorgeMorrison @khs_milk @PederTuborgh
Mr Wojciechowski underlined his wish to pursue his
work on the basis of the CAP proposals made by his
predecessor. He highlighted the importance of EU
agriculture in the framework of the top priority of
the next EU Commission (‘European Green Deal’)
and his commitment to better protect farmers and
hence, the EU agri-food business in times of market
disruptions. In his EU agricultural trade ambitions,
Mr Wojciechowski seems to take a strong stand in
the defence of European agriculture, preferring to
support EU small farms using their own fodder
instead of importing soy from Brazil.
The European Parliament will take its final
assessment of the candidature of Mr Wojciechowski
at a later stage, while the incoming Commissioner
for Health (and Consumer Protection), Stella
Kyriakides from Cyprus, was fully backed by the EP.
Ms Kyriakides spoke out for an harmonized nutrition
labelling scheme across Europe.

WTO arbitrator issues decision in Airbus subsidy dispute: European dairy products to be severely hit…
The World Trade Organisation announced
yesterday a ruling giving President Trump the
authority to impose tariffs on up to $7.5 billion
of EU exports on a yearly basis, as
compensation for excessive subsidies for
Airbus aerospace industry. Many dairy
products are on the potential retaliation list,
going from yogurt, butter and whey to most
of European cheeses. This amount of $7.5
billion must be confirmed by the WTO’s
Dispute Settlement body (next meeting
scheduled for 28 October but the US might
require an earlier meeting). The definitive
product coverage will be determined by
amendments to the HTSUS that USTR will
publish in an upcoming Federal Register
notice. The effective date of the additional
duties is October 18, 2019. Dairy products will
be subject to an additional import duty of
25%. They are listed in different sections,
differentiating between different member
states. Knowing that the EU is also entitled to
retaliate against the US because of excessive
subsidies to Boing (but the exact amount will
only be known before next summer…), it is
highly regrettable that no agreement can be
reached with USTR to avoid these punitive
duties. ► Check out our Press Release for

IDF World Dairy Summit 2019 in Istanbul IDF President Dr Judith Bryans welcomed over
1,200 delegates from the “world of dairy” in Istanbul
(Turkey) for the IDF World Dairy Summit 2019, last
week. This unique world dairy meeting – together
with the ‘annexed’ global dairy meetings, like the
GDP (Global Dairy Platform), DSF (Dairy
Sustainability Framework) and IFCN (International
Farm Comparison Network) – was launched with the
“Dairy Leaders Forum”.
The high-level (and
gender-balanced!)
opening panel with Ms
İdil Yiğitbaşı (CEO Pinar, Turkey), Mr Lihua Wei
(CEO Junlebao, China), Mr Rupinder Sodhi (CEO
Amul, India), Ms Margrethe Jonkman (RFC) Ms
Margaret Munene (CEO Palmhouse Dairies, Kenya)
and Ms Hanne Søndergaard (CMO Arla Foods,
Denmark) gave an (…) outstanding overview on
global dairy and our ambitions from all over the
world.

New Report Says Kids Under Five Should Avoid Plant-Based Beverages A new consensus recommendation and report ►
“Healthy Beverage Consumption in Early
Childhood”, confirms some good news for the
dairy sector. The report, released recently in the
United States, represents the consensus of expert
representatives from four influential health and
nutrition organizations: the American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP), Academy of Nutrition and
Dietetics (AND), American Heart Association (AHA)
and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
(AAPD). Among other things, these organizations
recommend consumption of cow’s milk by children
ages 0-5, calling milk one of two “go-to” beverages
for children. The other is water. Read more of

Your favorite product?
“I was born & bred on a dairy farm in the
townland of Dunbeacon located in West Cork
on the Atlantic coast. Our milk was processed
at Carbery around fifty miles away in
Ballineen. My preferred dairy product would
be Carbery’s Dubliner cheese (Vintage
variety). Aged from 18 months to 36 months,
the mature cheese has a rich distinctive
flavour and a crumbly, creamy texture.
Perfect with some of
my mother’s
homemade brown
bread & a cup of
Barry’s Tea – you can
tell I am a Cork girl !!"
