The winners of the 2015 Metro Rail and Health Safety Week Awards were announced at the Symposium today.

Congratulations to the winners of Metro's Rail Health and Safety Week Awards 2015.

The awards recognise and reward excellence in workplace health and safety by individuals and groups.

Entry for the Metro Rail Health and Safety Week Awards 2015 was open to all Metro employees, and nominations were submitted using an online nomination form. Six categories were voted on by employees and two categories were direct nominations by the CEO and Executive.

The winners were presented with their awards today at the 2015 Health and Safety Symposium, held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Best Solution to a Workplace Safety Concern: Krisha Vermula and Peter Tasker, Rolling Stock

A new method was developed to ensure the safety of all maintainers in the depot, using the assistance of a mechanical aid specific to the task of replacing intercar bellows on X’Trapolis trains. The task is now safer and 70% of manual handling has been replaced with the mechanical aid.

Best Demonstration of Safety Leadership: Geoffrey Quinn, Train Services

Geoff lives by the mantra ‘the behaviour we walk past is the behaviour we accept’. He works hard to correct any behaviours that put individuals at risk and this is a culture he’s instilled on those around him.

HSR of the Year: Terry Franklin, Malvern AOs

Terry constantly puts the health and safety of people around him first and works hard to make his

department safer. He recently set up, and still manages, a scheme for rewarding and recognising AOs for acting safely at work.

OHS Committee of the Year: AOs HSR Committee

The AO HSR Committee has transformed safety in the business unit. Led by Terry Franklin and President Luckman, the team has been instrumental in reducing the AO LTIFR from 25.03 down to less than 1.8, whilst reducing ‘use of force’ incidents by over 50%.

Wellness Advocate of the Year: Jeevan Bala, Customer Service Footscray Station, and Luke Martin, Authorised Officers Transport House (joint winners)

Jeevan has introduced initiatives such as a monthly fruit day, a bi-monthly Northern Group Health and Wellness Newsletter and organised an event celebrating the women working in the Northern group with a Mother’s Day morning tea.

Luke has worked hard to develop and roll out a peer support program, and proactively encourage wellness at work.

Happy Workplace Award: Footscray Station – Customer Service

At Footscray, RUOK? Day is every day. Led by Jeevan Bala, the team has recruited more

wellness advocates to drive the ‘We Care’ message to their employees. They’ve also introduced a range of initiatives including monthly fruit days, Mother’s Day celebrations, a new internal newsletter and stress and trauma training.

Executive Management Team Safety Award: James French, David Mortimer, Trevor Allen (Signal Sighting Committee)

James, David and Trevor implemented the signal sighting procedure and formalised a process to assess signals that are modified or involved in incidents. This commitment involved attending signals at all times of the day or night and weekends and making recommendations to mitigate risk to drivers.

CEO Safety Award: James Burrows, Rolling Stock, Bayswater

James has a very keen focus on safety, leading by example and coming up with various solutions and ideas to safety issues in and around the depot. Through the engagement of others in the HSR committee, he has successfully implemented various concepts to help build on Bayswater depot’s great safety record of over 2000 days LTI free.

Metro has been recognised by the Salvation Army for its role during the Red Shield Appeal.

Metro opened up its network to volunteer fundraisers in May, with customers responding in great fashion as they dropped a coin or two into collection tins. Major Brendan Nottle acknowledged the assistance provided by Metro and its staff, presenting us with a Certificate Of Appreciation.

This year’s appeal looks set to raise a record $136,000 in the CBD, eclipsing the previous record set last year. The funds, when pooled with collections made across Greater Melbourne, will help the Salvos to keep running their great programs and services.

The Salvos serve 2000 meals every week at their centre in Bourke Street. They also provide practical and emotional support to people in need of assistance across Melbourne, including referral to counselling and other special services targeting homelessness, as well as drug and alcohol addiction.

Meanwhile, the Salvos-Metro Transit Teams continue to head out onto the rail network at night to help keep our vulnerable customers safe. Salvos volunteers will also be on the network during this year’s Christmas Appeal.

We’re excited to announce the winners of the Rail Health and Safety Week Drawing Competition.

The talented children of Metro employees, ranging between 4-14 years of age, submitted their masterpieces based on this year’s theme ‘how do your grown-ups keep happy at work’.

The quality of the entries was outstanding, making it very difficult to select our winners. However we’re pleased to announce the names of the children who will have their artwork published in the 2016 Metro Health and Safety Calendar.

The overall winner was Olivia Bolger, daughter of Community Relations Advisor for Projects, Jamie Ledwidge. Olivia’s artwork will grace the cover of the calendar.

Thank you to everyone who participated and well done to the 12 other winners: Rachael Castelino, Najden Paskoski, Abbey Chapman, Akshita Benny, Phoebe Billing, Johan P Alex, Juan Mathew George, Alexandra Keogh, Deepak P Alex, Vishwanathan Sreekanth, Damjan Paskoski and Aashika Benny

CEO, Andrew Lezala, joined representatives from the public transport industry and Victoria Police to officially launch the 10th anniversary of Rail Safety Week on Tuesday.

Rail Safety Week is an initiative of the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and TrackSAFE, aimed at improving education and awareness about railway level crossing and track safety.

Andrew Lezala acknowledged the great work of TrackSAFE in consistently sending a strong safety message to the community and to the rail industry itself.

“At Metro, we take safety very seriously. It’s our number one company value and we work hard to keep our employees, contractors and customers out of harm’s way every day of the year.

“The Metro rail network has a passenger injury rate of 2.11 per million trips, which is a world class performance in customer safety,” he said.

The theme of this year’s Rail Safety Week is ‘It’s everyone’s responsibility’, and encourages pedestrians, commuters, motorists and cyclists to get the message across that everyone has a role to play in safety around the public transport network.

During Rail Safety Week, our popular ‘Dumb Ways to Die’ characters will be appealing to customers, via social media and in school visits, to be safe on the rail network. They’ll be focusing on a range of safety issues: Slips, trips and falls Level crossing safety The dangers of being distracted Holding the handrail Forcing doors

TrackSAFE has also launched a new video which shines a light on people’s thoughts on rail safety. Watch the video here: www.tracksafefoundation.com.au/rail-safety-week/

To celebrate Rail Safety Week and Melbourne’s 180th birthday on 30 August, our Community Education Unit ran a poster competition for school kids in years 5 and 6.

They received over 100 colourful, creative posters with fantastic rail safety messages such as: Stand behind the yellow line Mind the gap Remove headphones around

level crossings and trains, and Press the red emergency

button in emergencies The winning entry was

submitted by Emily Ben from Courtenay Gardens Primary School. Emily’s prize included a 2GB iPod Shuffle, a Dumb Ways to Die showbag and a school visit from the Dumb Ways to Die mascots.

A special presentation was held at Emily’s school, kicking off with TrackSAFE’s new Rail Safety Week video, ‘It’s Everyone’s Responsibility’, video. Members of the audience then shared some rail safety tips before the poster competition winners were presented with their prizes.
