Dear friends and Industry colleagues,as I reflect on the last 4 years, I’m sure many of you agree that business has been extremely good for all of us. During these busy times, I am amazed at the productivity of our Pedditeam members. employees are enthusiastic, and efficiency is high because everyone is focused on their job. as CeO, I feel very fortunate to be in this successful position, but there is a nagging thought that sticks in my mind.

Senior employees retireI have around 20 people in various departments retiring in the next couple of years. From my customer visits, I know that you are faced with the same problem. since young people are not flocking to work in structural fabrication shops… what do we do?

JPW – the name says it all. John P. Wozniczka sr., the family patriarch founded JPW in 1953. he fabricated steel for gravel conveyors and stone crushers on site throughout the northeast, Usa. after 20 years, he started a plate fabrication shop near syracuse, ny.

then came John Jr. with a Junior College education, who managed the shop operations for his Dad for three years. With an aptitude for steel erection, John Jr. founded JPW riggers which performs crane rental and industrial work throughout the Usa. yep, his wife ran the office.

John III and his brother Jody both graduated from college in 1998 with the typical graduate’s dilemma…”What do I do now?” the answer was right there in the family portrait. Like his Grandfather, John III developed his talent for plate and structural fabrication. his brother Jody followed his father’s footsteps with appreciation for the crane and rigging business.

the two Wozniczka brothers teamed up to create JPW structural where today they fabricate and erect structural steel buildings, miscellaneous stairs and related ironwork. JPW structural is an aIsC approved fabricator as well as an asme shop for design/build of pressure vessels and heat exchangers. their versatility leads them to fabricate bridges for the new york DOt.

What Separates JPW from the competition? structural steel fabrication and erection is in the Wozniczka blood line and leads them to fabricate everything from buildings to large trusses to bridges to machining individual components. JPW riggers has contracts for wind tower erection and maintenance throughout the United states. so “product flexibility” must be their middle name.

a defining point for JPW is that the firm owns and operates all of their crane used for site erection – from tower cranes to man lifts to scissor hoists. they own all of their own trucks and trailers, even shop drawings are all detailed and drawn in house.

getting to Know Peddinghaus In 1999, JPW earned their aIsC certification, and decided the time was right to enter the new age of structural steel technology. after all, they were doing everything manually. they contacted Peddinghaus, and steve Farrow traveled to syracuse to review their shop layout to determine capacity and “best fit in the shop”.

“steve wanted to insure that we had the right machine for growth potential. he didn’t oversell us on a bigger, more costly machine. his exact words were, his exact words were, ‘Let’s grow together.’ ” says John.

“soon after our BDL-760 (30 inch (760 mm) capacity) was operational, we saw the need to invest in detail machines to keep up: a Fabripunch plate machine and an anglemaster for clip angles and bracing.”

“let’s grow together” JPW continued to thrive into the 21st century, and in 2003 the company grew into a 52 inch (1250 mm) drill, BDL-1250/9D, and band saw. With the triple threat attack of CnC fabrication, in-house trucking and their own erection company, JPW was on their way.

tim Flanigan, a JPW employee for 13 years stated, ”as we purchased more and more Peddinghaus equipment we noticed production going way up. It was up to us to find better ways to accelerate fit up, welding, fabrication and painting just to keep up with the Peddinghaus machines.”

With this equipment, the firm was averaging over 7,000 tons per year, but saw the potential for more tonnage – with increased profitability.

next generation growth In 2016, the Wozniczka family decided the time was right to invest in new technology – again from Peddinghaus.

“steve had retired, and mike evans worked with us on the new project. the common theme remained the same from Peddinghaus: ‘grow at your own pace – invest in the right equipment at the right time.”

“I’ll share something with you”, commented John, “we were captivated by the notion of a plasma robot…you know, the one machine that does it all. But during our investigation, we learned of its limitation for processing larger sections, the application problems with plasma cut holes, and knew it wouldn’t fit our product mix, our shop flow, or our market”.

added John, “we chose to invest in a Peddinghaus new BDL-1250/9D carbide drill, a 1250-600 miter band saw, a Liberator thermal coping processor, and a unique new machine – the PeddiWriter”.

From the shop perspective, tim said, “all of the new Peddinghaus machines are rugged and fast…very fast. I can’t believe the speed of the BDL-D carbide drill – with increased tool life – it is unbelievably efficient.

But the machine that surprised me the most was the PeddiWriter. I can see the benefits every day of how it’s so efficient for the fitters to tack the parts on. It is so much faster than a fitter manually laying it out. Our shop guys love the PeddiWriter – it makes everyone’s job easier – and we increased our tonnage significantly.”

Service with a Skype John III says, “Our relationship with Peddinghaus couldn’t be better. We deal with a lot of different manufacturers from cranes to trucks to machining centers in our shop. By far Peddinghaus provides the best service in the industry. the service techs are excellent for on-site visits.

We love their 24-hour phone service, as we start at 5 am est – that’s 4 am in Bradley. We call and get someone to answer our questions, and we are ready to run production for the day.

I especially like Peddinghaus’ ability to check our machinery via the internet, and we can resolve any issue right away. On top of that, Peddinghaus carries an extensive inventory, so I can easily obtain a part by early morning, next day shipment. It saves me money, as I don’t have to carry parts in my stock here in syracuse.”

What is one of the worst jobs in a fabrication shop? Grinding...it is dirty, hazardous and exhausting work. eliminating or limiting the grinding process is a goal of any shop manager. Grinding structural profiles and cleaning slag from poor thermal cutting are among the many shop tasks that only add to the fabrication cost by increasing the man hours to perform these tasks. every fabricator knows the problems associated with grinding – but what is the solution? this is where Peddinghaus helps fabricators solve this costly, hazardous issue.

the Peddi XDm-630 accomplishes milling on a high percentage of your coping requirements.

With the help of smart spindle technology, our milling process enables us to mill both top and bottom flange spindles simultaneously. this means the profile exits the machine with majority of your copes ready for the next fit up, welding or painting operation. While no process is perfect, milling copes gives the best cut lines with no draft angle, unlike many burn processes. Draft angles generally range from 2-8 degrees depending on the process used for burning. this is accentuated on thick material, but generally is taken care of by a hand grinder. milled finishes create 90 degree fits, this makes squaring up joints simple.

Remembering Jeff MullikinHis legacy and Peddinghaus’ FutureYou often read a reference to the “Peddinghaus Family of employees”. as a family owned firm, we place high value on our employees. after all, we spend large amounts of time together at work, and sometimes at play. But recently, we lost a close member of the Peddinghaus employee family. Many of our industry friends may not know the name of Jeff Mullikin. Jeff was a Senior Design engineer and served Peddinghaus as a loyal employee for 28 years. the last 12 years, Jeff was Vice President of engineering at PCSC, our sister company in andrews, SC.

Jeff passed away unexpectedly while on an engineering Research/Development visit to Bradley a couple of months ago. He was a lifelong engineer, and his lists of accomplishments are unparalleled in the industry. Jeff was significantly involved in the engineering and design of many Peddinghaus machines:

as you can see, Jeff was a Peddinghaus mainstay - both as an engineer and as an employee. the adjective most used by his peers to describe him was “Passionate”. He had an unquenchable thirst for equipment design and customer satisfaction. He routinely visited fabricators, manufacturers and anyone using structural steel. He would spend hours (sometimes days) on their shop floor experiencing the same challenges as our customers. Fabricating structural steel isn’t like making “widgets”, so he continually sought better methods of solving shop issues.

He was the type of guy who would spend 10 hours at the office designing a new machine, and then spend the evening talking to customers or his Peddinghaus peers seeking resolution to any questions. that’s why everyone loved the guy. if there is anything that Jeff treasured more than the structural steel industry, it was his family. Jeff’s office was adorned with photos of his wife, kids, and especially grandkids. if you ever experienced a cell call delay from Jeff, it was because he was out enjoying the company of his grandkids!

it’s a difficult adjustment when you lose someone, especially a friend of 28 years. But Jeff left us a gift. that gift was his legacy in machine tool design, and his passion for Peddinghaus customers and the

structural steel fabrication industry. His unexpected passing left a hole in the heart of our employees, but time does heal all wounds. How can that be, you ask? Well, it’s quite simple. With every new anglemaster machine shipment…With every ocean avenger installation…With every satisfied customer…With every fabricator using Jeff’s technology to win a new project – we remember Jeff. We fondly recall his contributions to our success, and his dedication to our industry.

Not a bad legacy to leave for your family… not bad at all, Jeff

With its european charm and breathtaking nature reserves, Quebec is becoming an increasingly popular tourist location. as Canada’s largest province, and with most residents living in urban areas, cities are expanding at rapid rates. Founded in 1997 initially as a steel erection and installation company, structure acier select

began to flourish in Quebec, Canada’s second-most populous province. In 2002, structure acier select became acier select, and now operates in Quebec, northern Quebec, Labrador, Western Canada and the United states. still only a steel erection company, acier select decided it was time to expand their horizons

into producing the structural steel as well as installing it. this is where Peddinghaus comes in. Business Development and Project manager, sonia vachon confirms, “When we started talking about buying equipment, the name that always came first, whether in discussions or searches on social networks, was Peddinghaus.” With

high expectations, acier select purchased their first Peddinghaus drill line machine, the PCD-1100/3B-advantage and doubled their factory size.

Francis Benjamin, Jr. eng. from acier select, describes his memory of the purchase, “I sure remember what a big difference it made on our production level and our efficiency.” acier select will be producing an average of 15,000 tons of steel per year from their new shop expansion.

Increasing Product value with Peddinghaus’ blast cleaning Systemthe most recent addition to the Peddinghaus machine family at acier select was the PeddiBlast shot blasting machine, purchased in 2012. Francis knows firsthand the difficulty of brushing beams manually, “I have been working at acier select for 10 years already. I was only 14 years old when I brushed my first beam, at a time when we had no shot blast machine.” Francis commented, “With the PeddiBlast, the quality of welding and the paint have been greatly improved. the finish of our product is completely different than before the acquisition of the PeddiBlast.

even the air quality in the shop improved, to the delight of our employees. We are really satisfied with our acquisition. We were surprised at how easy this machine is to operate. after only four hours of training, an employee is able to operate the machine.”

the team at acier select is now able to deliver projects in record time since their investments. Welding and assembling comes with more ease, as the PeddiBlast rids their steel profiles of imperfections. the DG-1100 band saw and anglemaster-623 have rounded out the efficiency on successful shop production.

Steel Successrecently, the team at acier select beamed with pride at the opening of the Place Bell sports arena, or otherwise known as Club de hockey rocket de Laval, in Laval, Quebec. the unique stadium seats 10,000 fans and will soon be home to the american hockey League’s (ahL) Laval rockets, an affiliate of the montreal Canadiens. the Port of sept-Îles, the most important iron ore port in Canada is yet another one of acier select’s noteworthy projects.

Comprised of 14 large steel docks, 23 million tons of iron ore, aluminum, petroleum and limestone pass through the port per year.

Family oriented companiessonia advised, “We have a very good relationship with Peddinghaus. technical assistance and maintenance service is very good, there is always someone to answer us at the moment we need it. Owning a saw, a drill, and an anglemaster, the 24-hour service is really useful as our machines are all equipped with proper interface to communicate remotely.”

the greatest aspect of this steel industry partnership is the similarity in company values. Both Peddinghaus and acier select are proud to consider themselves family-oriented companies. Francis expresses, “acier select is much more than one person, it is a family.”

ZeMaN SBa CoMPaCt+this specification meets most international fabricator’s performance outcome requirements. the SBa compact+ design consists of 2 robots for assemble, tack weld and finish weld. this steel beam assembler can achieve up to 15,000 tons/year to assemble and weld out cleats to beams. this machine is first choice for fabricators with limited factory space and high capacity demand.

SBa conti+ design is chosen by fabricators running a plant with continuous material flow, allowing for easy integration in existing beam handling and demand for high output in finish welded structural steel. SBa eco+ consist of 2 welding robots, offers best efficiency in finish welding for pre-assembled beams and achieves up to 25,000 tons of finish welded beams per year. the SBa eco+ steel beam robot welding cell will fabricate and fully weld out cleats to beams that have previously been manually tacked and assembled. this specification is cost effective and provides additional flexibility of the type of parts that can be fabricated in the robot welding cell.

SBa 2Conti+ is a double sided line, consists of 4 robots for assemble, tack weld and finish weld robots. the final configuration of this line can be achieved step by step by applying ZeMaN’s modular installation concept. In the valley of mexico is a metropolis that in the last 8 years has vastly increased its population. as the number of civilians continues to rise in mexico City and its surrounding areas (over 21 million currently), so does the skyline. On any given day if you were to take a stroll down the main streets of downtown mexico City, every range of work is on display. From high-rise executives in luxury cars to construction crews erecting steel towers to the humble men and women working to keep the streets clean, all are working hard in this bustling city. Located in the middle of mexico, it truly is a hub for the Western hemisphere. now, enter one of the largest and most technically advanced shops in all of mexico. Beaming with pride, General manager Jorge martín rodríguez states, “Our new structural steel fabrication plant is one of the most modern in the world.”

this can plainly be seen by taking a walk through the shop. aJaX operates a dozen Peddinghaus CnC machines (plate lines, saw drill lines, copers and a PeddiWriter) to help with their massive throughput. “right now we are producing 53,000 tons of steel per year,” states Jorge, “Currently the mexican market is very hot and there are projects all around. We hope this will keep increasing for many years.” meeting the demand is no simple task and it takes some serious man power to complete. aJaX consists of 400 employees in the shop, 200 in the office and an additional 300 at the erection sites in mexico City. the tonnage they produce is a true testament to their work ethic.

Seeing Double in the HSFDb-caJaX, an established steel fabrication company, continues to grow right alongside the beautiful city they have been serving for over 6 decades. In the early ‘90s, they realized

the need to stay ahead of the steel production industry. they reached out to Peddinghaus, and soon owned the first CnC machine in mexico. “In 1991, we were looking to be the first company in mexico to have CnC machines,” Jorge stated. “Our experience after buying the first FPB-1500 plate line from Peddinghaus was excellent. We got more productivity in our shop with the same amount of people.” since then, the need to produce more steel with more accuracy and increased quality has never ceased with aJaX. Jorge notes that in the last 3 years they have purchased

2 hsFDB-C plate lines from Peddinghaus. “Our Peddinghaus plate lines here at aJaX are very productive. the FPB-1800 makes it very cheap to punch a hole. the dual hsFDB-2500/Cs that we have are very unique in doing some things no other machines can do like beveling and countersinking. We love that!”

topping out the SkylineWith a modern approach and impressive size for their facility, aJaX is poised to produce the most tonnage in the history of the company. “aJaX is very proud to be processing big projects,” Jorge says with a smile, “the

projects we have completed above 25,000 tons are vidalta, Bosque real, Plaza Carso and reforma 222.” the latter boasting 3 towers with 2 amongst the tallest in mexico City. With the high-rise, low-rise and commercial retail markets dialed in, Jorge explains the reason they stay successful, “Our strategy is not to do all the jobs out there, but we try to keep within the projects that we are efficient in completing. What makes us different from our competition is that we see the process of production as it needs to be very automated with low man hours per ton. many erection tower cranes,

many trucks and transportation units and many CnC machines in our fabrication shop.”

One of aJaX’s newest projects is the 3 towers project in the southwest suburbs of mexico City. each tower is around 45 stories and consists of 2,500 tons of steel produced in their shop. “the hsFDB-C technology in countersinking and beveling made a big difference in this project. We have to do countersinking in 4 inch plates and the plate lines are fabulous in that process.” the towers are slated for completion in December of this year and will serve as

residential buildings. It takes more than just structural fabrication to own projects of this caliber. aJaX is a one stop shop, the company not only specializes in fabrication, but has in-house engineering and erection crews as well. Controlling the process in every step helps them meet deadlines and keep a close eye on quality.

aJaX looks to Stay on topaJaX has come a long way from their humble beginnings producing aluminum canopies in the 1950’s. their first structural steel project

occurred in 1964, the same year Jorge’s family took over the business. since then, they have maintained it as a family business.

staying at the top is no easy task. “We would like the world to know that aJaX is one of the most productive shops in the world,” Jorge says over the noise of his busy shop. “We have a brand new facility, lots of CnC machines, 41 overhead cranes, we are 60 miles from the most modern beam mill on the planet, we are situated in the middle of mexico and we have the best quality assurance system in place.”
