NEW ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES A reminder to our families of the new Department of Education and Training (DET) School Attendance Guidelines that were released last year. From now on, if your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of absence, by phoning or visiting the school office or by emailing to [email protected] with the reason for the absence. Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility. All Victorian government schools are now required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained. The changes aim to promote daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things every day, and so missing school puts them behind. A copy of our school attendance policy is accessible from our school website: http://lockwood.sponsored2.com/page/33/Policies HEADLICE We have received two reports of head lice in the past week. We’ve managed to really get on top of this problem in the last few years and we’re keen to keep head lice out of the school. A head lice check will be conducted at school as soon as all pupil information update & consent permissions are returned to school. In the meantime, please check your children’s heads tonight, if you find evidence of head lice, children must be treated before returning to school. Please also let us know here at the office. Thank you. TEETH ON WHEELS

On Monday 18th February, a representative from the Teeth On Wheels program will visit our school and talk to the students at assembly about dental oral health and our upcoming visit of the Teeth on Wheels dental team. Parents from last year will remember that we have entered an agreement with Teeth on Wheels to provide regular, on-site dental care. Application forms for the 2019 program were must be returned to school by Tuesday 19th February to enable your child to visit the Teeth on Wheels Dental Van on either the 6th or 8th of March. Thanks to those people who have returned their application forms already. It is worth applying as the scope of eligibility is quite wide and even if ineligible for FREE treatment via Medicare, there is an excellent package available for low cost dental care. Parents are welcome to attend our assembly on Monday 18th February to hear their presentation. HEALTHY SNACKS CANTEEN Our Healthy Snacks Canteen is back and will operate at afternoon recess every Tuesday afternoon. Sonya Taylor coordinates the Healthy Snacks canteen.

MENU: Plain salted popcorn or rice crackers.

Banana & berry smoothies Frozen pineapple

For Term 1 icy poles. The smoothies contain fruit, milk and plain yoghurt. All items are 70 cents each.

Start of Year Reminders CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF) CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per student is $125 for primary school students. To apply, please see Fiona at the school office to obtain a CSEF application form. TISSUES We ask that all families provide each of their children with a large box of tissues for their classrooms. Please hand their box of tissues to their individual class teacher. OSHC NEWS This week at OSHC children have been exploring imaginative play. We have a pretend doctors surgery that has allowed children to examine real x-rays and take care of pretend patients. The children at Out of Hours School Care are using this imaginative play to support their ability to interact with other children with care, empathy and support. We look forward to seeing you at OSHC soon! Just a reminder to please return your enrolment forms for OSHC ASAP. If you have already started using OSHC this year, your form must be processed into our system by Friday. Please also call Fiona to re-confirm any permanent bookings you need as bookings are not carried over to the new year. Nerrilie Dunn, OSHC Co-ordinator

This term we are looking at different design and

strategic thinking in the fantastic new STEM

Centre. Students have been encouraged to design

and build a bridge using only the materials provided.

The question for the grade 4/5 and 5/6s was:

”How do I build a bridge that can hold the most

weight possible?”

The Foundation to grade 3/4 classes were asked:

“How do I build a bridge that can hold the objects

presented by the teacher?”

Students were placed in groups of four or five and

had to present their designs and then agree to how

to build the bridge. Collaboration, team work,

persuasive argument and creativity were all

stimulated and developed throughout the lessons.
