HOW TO APPLY FOR A REGIONAL VET PROGRAM1. Read the information in this brochure.

2. Read the detailed course information for the course(s) you are interested in and encourage your parents / caregivers to read this too. This information is available for each course on our website www.safssa.sa.edu.au

3. Fill out the Student Application Form and hand it to your VET Leader by Friday 13 September 2019 (week 8, term 3). See your VET Leader for this form, or download it from our website www.safssa.sa.edu.au

4. You will be provided with more information about the course from the Host School, including the particular selection and enrolment procedures, which may include an interview. Selection for entry to regional courses will be based on the following principles:

• Demonstrated capacity for independent learning and meeting the requirements of the program.

• Identified relevant interest and/or experience in the program.

• Commitment to a post-school pathway in this area.

5. Applicants will be advised of the enrolment outcome early in term 4.

6. Applicants may need some further subject counselling at their Home School to ensure their VET course is included in their SACE and school timetable.

SELECTION GUIDELINESSelection for entry to courses is based on the following guidelines:

• Identified relevant interest and/or previous work experience

• Identified career pathway

• For Training Guarantee for SACE Students (TGSS), students must meet eligibility criteria.

WHAT IS VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TR AINING (VE T)?VET refers to national vocational qualifications that are endorsed by industry. VET qualifications provide students with the opportunity to develop specific industry related skills. Students with VET qualifications are well prepared to take on apprenticeships (including School-based Apprenticeships), further education and training, and skilled jobs.

WHAT ARE REGIONAL VE T PROGR AMS?Regional VET programs provide students in years 10, 11 and 12 in Southern Adelaide and Fleurieu region with increased vocational pathway options through a broad range of VET program choices. Regional VET programs are hosted by schools and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Students remain enrolled at their Home School, and attend the Host School or RTO for their chosen VET program.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHOOSING A VE T COURSE?• Gaining a nationally-recognised qualification while completing your SACE• Getting a ‘head start’ in your chosen career• Making your senior school study more relevant and interesting• Providing opportunities to learn ‘on-the-job’ through workplace learning• Gaining the skills and knowledge that employers look for• Providing pathways into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education

or training and direct employment.

HOW WILL DOING A VE T PROGR AM CONTRIBUTE TO SACE?The flexibility of the SACE enables students to include a significant amount of VET in their SACE studies. The ‘SACE Credits’ column in the table in this brochure shows the SACE information relevant to each particular course (i.e. number of SACE credits and SACE stage). Please refer to the information in this brochure and also on the SAFSSA website www.safssa.sa.edu.au. Please also speak to your VET Coordinator for more information.

HOW WILL I TR AVEL TO MY VE T COURSE?If students have chosen to participate in a course at another SAFSSA school, parents/caregivers will be required to arrange transport for their child to the training and work placements. Students who drive themselves, take student passengers or are a passenger with another student, must have signed consent Travel in Private Vehicles Form prior to courses commencing.

WILL I NEED TO DO WORKPL ACE LE ARNING AS PART OF MY VE T COURSE?Some VET Programs require students to complete Workplace Learning as part of their training in a real or simulated work environment. These placements provide valuable training and mentoring to develop your technical and employability skills.

WILL DOING A VE T COURSE AFFECT MY OTHER SUB JECTS?Some students may miss lessons for other subjects while at their VET course. This means that you will need to be well organised and prepared to negotiate subject learning requirements by working closely with your subject teachers and VET Leader.

COURSE FEES There is a cost for students to undertake any VET course which covers course fees, consumables, equipment and the Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s) cost for delivering the course. Invoices will be sent in Week 4, Term 1 and must be paid by the due date indicated on the invoice or an instalment plan must be arranged. Every student must have returned a completed and signed a ‘Commitment to Pay Course Fees’ form with their initial enrolment. If students provide notification to withdraw from their course after invoices have been sent out, payment of course fees is still required.

TR AINING GUAR ANTEE F OR SACE STUDENTS (TGSS)The Training Guarantee for SACE Students (TGSS) is for students who know they want to start a planned vocational pathway whilst still at school as part of their SACE, and then continue after they leave school. Through TGSS, the South Australian Government offers subsidised training with a Training Provider for selected SACE students who are 16 years of age or older, undertaking substantive VET within the SACE and have relevant work experience or VET training. If a VET course you are applying for indicates that it is TGSS, students must complete a Form A along with the application form. For more information please go to www.skills.sa.gov.au or speak to your VET Coordinator.
