TheNiceneCreed:We continue to sing this declaration of our faith today, and for the nextseveral weeks, to the ancient melody found at S 103 in the front portion of TheHymnal1982.As early as the sixth century the Nicene Creed was sung to this very tune, whose patterns aresimilar to the familiar chant that begins the Great Thanksgiving. If singing the Creed is a newexperience for you, feel free to follow along and recite the Creed quietly (or silently) as it issung; then please do join us in singing it as soon as you feel ready to give it a try. Chanting theCreed can bring us a fresh revelation of the power and meaning of these familiar words. ThehymnswesingthisSunday exemplify the variety of style and expression to be found in

TheHymnal1982, the oficial hymnal of the Episcopal Church. The words of the irst hymn, “New every morning,” were intended by the author, 19th c.Anglican priest John Keble, for private meditation rather than public singing. But Keble’spoems soon found favor with hymnal editors, and their popularity has endured. In our hymnalKeble’s morning meditation is set to a sturdy American folk hymn. The moving words of the sequence hymn sung before the Gospel, “By gracious powers,” werewritten by the German pastor and activist Dietrich Bonhoeffer, imprisoned by the Nazi regimeand awaiting execution. We sing them to a stirring tune (composed much later) by the Frenchpriest and musician Joseph Gelineau. At the end of Communion we sing one of Charles Wesley’s most imaginative and strikinghymn texts, “Come, O thou Traveler unknown,” also known as “Wrestling Jacob.” It is Wesley’sre-imagining of the account in today’s Old Testament reading of Jacob’s struggle with theangel of God, which Wesley interprets as a “type,” a foreshadowing, of the Christian’s spiritualencounter with Jesus. It is also set to a rugged, angular American folk hymntune that catchesperfectly the rapt mystical feel of Wesley’s poem. The inal hymn, also by Charles Wesley, is an extended and joyous doxology that takes much ofits imagery from the triumphant visions of God’s throne that appear in the Book of Revelation. Hymns:10 “New every morning is the love"696“By gracious powers"638“Come, O thou Traveler unknown"535“Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim”Offertory Anthem: "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills" - Leo SowerbyCommunion Motet: "My Jesus makes my heart rejoice" - Dieterich Buxtehude, arr. STEWARDSHIP-ASERIESWeek3 Talents Our talents are part of the abundance that God has provided to each of us. We are called to usethese talents to empower, uplift, and reach out to people who are on the margins- those whofeel that they have been forgotten. How do we use our talents to serve God and do this work inthe world? Have you considered what your talents are and discerned how they may be put touse to serve God? Working on the margins, there is a need for creativity, compassion, offeringan ear to listen, offering a hand to hold, sharing a smile, or just sitting quietly and beingpresent with those who believe they are forgotten and do not matter. These talents – ourtalents, is what allows us to do God’s work in the world and ion the margins of our society. This stewardship season, we ask that you discern and consider where your individual andGod given talents can be used in “The Way of Love”.

During Lectio Divina, the practitioner listens to the text ofthe Bible with the "ear of the heart," as if he or she is in conversation with God, and God issuggesting the topics for discussion. The method of Lectio Divina includes moments ofreading (lectio), relecting on (meditatio), responding to (oratio) and resting in(contemplatio) the Word of God with the aim of nourishing and deepening one's relationshipwith the Divine."
