SELF-DISCIPLINE The greatest of all warriors in the siege of Troy had not the preeminence because
nature had given him strength and he carried the largest bow, but because self-discipline had taught
him how to bend it. ~Daniel Webster

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, we also honor our own baptism as our initiation into the Christian life and community. In the Gospel, the baptism of Jesus, with his immersion and then emergence from the water, points to his later submission to God at his death, and his emergence from the grave at his resurrection. This pattern of death and resurrection is our path too, as followers of Jesus. Throughout life, often in small ways, we learn to surrender our limited and self-centered agendas. This surrender often feels like death. The sacrament of Baptism ritually enacts this pattern to remind us of Jesus’ death and resurrection, so that we too might embrace the deaths and resurrections of our own lives. As Jesus emerged from the water, he encountered his Father and the Holy Spirit. Like Jesus, we can know

“May the LORD bless his people with peace!” -Psalm 29
Did the first reading from Isaiah sound familiar? It was also heard on the First Sunday of Advent in December of 2008. I suppose it could be a reminder that John the Baptist appears at the beginning of the Advent/Christmas season and at the end. In Advent we were preparing for Jesus’ coming at Christmas. Now we are preparing for his coming at any time. The reading from Isaiah talks about the Lord coming in mercy to the people whose “guilt is expiated” (Isaiah 40:2). The mountains and hills will be leveled, symbolic of making an easy way to the Lord. In other words, the Lord is approachable. With our sins forgiven we need not fear asking God for help: “Fear not to cry out” (Isaiah 40:9). The Lord comes in power, not to strike sinners down but to shepherd them and lead them. In the second reading, St. Paul has a similar theme. Jesus gave his life for us on the cross so that we could be free from sin and able to reject evil desires. We are free to give ourselves in love as he did. And he does this, not because we did anything to deserve it, but from his own love and mercy for us. Think about that. No matter how bad I was in the past, the Lord loves me enough to forgive it all, and even better, to give the Spirit to help me stay close to God. How do we prepare for this? We can start by hearing the words of the readings today, letting them sink into our hearts and minds. Read them again at home, and remind yourself that you have been forgiven, that you can live as a person “eager to do what is good” (Titus 2:14). Ask the Spirit to help you see what things are keeping you from being like Jesus and to give you the strength to say no. And look for ways you can be more loving with your family, then with your friends, and eventually with anyone who needs your help. When we let that Spirit guide us, we become like Jesus in that we can listen for God to say, “You are my beloved child; w i t h y o u I a m w e l l pleased” (see Luke 3:22).

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD 13 JANUARY 2019
BAPTIZED WITH THE SPIRIT In today’s Gospel according to Luke, when John the Baptist clarified that he was not the expected Messiah, the Christ, he distinguished his baptism with water from the baptism “with the Holy Spirit and fire” that would be offered by Jesus. John’s baptism with water signified the surrender of one’s own agenda and the opening of one’s heart to God. The baptism with fire and Spirit describes God’s power entering and transforming the human heart. When Jesus was baptized in water, he publicly displayed his own full commitment to following God’s path for him. When the Spirit descended upon Jesus, he was empowered to begin his work. In effect, Jesus received both kinds of baptism described by John. He would go on to “baptize” those whose hearts were open through his ministry, death, and resurrection. Later, at Pentecost, the new community received a “baptism” of Spirit with tongues of fire.
TRINITY AND BAPTISM This week’s Gospel not only tells of Jesus’ baptism, but dramatically describes God as the Holy Trinity: Jesus in prayer, the Holy Spirit descending, and the Father’s voice from heaven. The nascent church linked its earliest understanding of God as Trinity to Baptism as the initiation into Christian life and community. New Christians were baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit. Jesus was proclaimed Beloved by his Father, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to begin his mission. Mission is a sending; to accept a mission is to be sent. After his ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus’ mission continued through the Spirit beginning at Pentecost. The Father sent the Son and Spirit, who together now send the church into the world. Baptism, then, is the sending of the newly baptized to join the Trinity in this mission. We the baptized are empowered to proclaim that all are God’s beloved. Our triune God is already ahead of us in the world, inviting our participation.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION There is a need for additional Eucharistic Ministers at all of the Masses.
During Mass, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion have the privilege of bringing the Body and Blood of Jesus to the faithful members of the assembly in assisting the presider in the distribution of Holy Communion. It is a grace-filled opportunity to minister to Saint Ann’s community. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the priests at all weekday and weekend Masses and on Holy Days. Outside of Mass, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may also assist in the distribution of the Eucharist to those who are homebound or in local nursing homes and hospitals. Necessary qualifications for Eucharistic Ministers are: be a practicing Catholic having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and if married, the marriage must be a valid Catholic marriage. This ministry is a very special way to help nourish our Parish Community. Training is provided and scheduling is made around your needs. Those interested in this wonderful Ministry should contact Carol at the Parish Office at 570-832-4275.

PRAYER FOR HEALING VICTIMS OF ABUSE Let us pray for Mercy today for victims and survivors,
that they may find some healing in the telling of their tragedies
and the affirmation of their courage. Let us pray for ourselves,
a broken Church, where some fallen clergy have
Killed the image of Christ it was thought to represent,
where the facade of trust lies dissolved in the tears of children, and the hope of transformation is
elusive. Let our spirits weep with the God of Love, and ask for Mercy to show us the way back to the pure heart of our faith.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
“When we encounter Christ, experience his love, and deepen our relationship with him, we become more aware of our own worth and that of others. His love for each person is cause for great joy, and growing understanding of this priceless treasure motivates us to share his love with others.”
USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “How to Build a Culture of Life,”
For all Christians: May we live out our baptismal call to proclaim the Gospel and be messengers of
God’s love for every human life; We pray to the Lord...

The Supreme Court Decision Legalizing Abortion.
Life is an empowering choice for women. It’s best for women and families facing unplanned pregnancies, and it’s best for developing female babies in the womb. Abortion harms women, and affects our society as a whole, in so many ways.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO PROCLAIM THE WORD OF GOD AT MASS?
It is an ancient teaching in the Church that Christ is truly present in His Word: the Word that is spoken, heard and acted upon. The Lector proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ, making God present to the gathered community.
We are currently looking to recruit new Lectors for this very special ministry. If you a confirmed, practicing Catholic and are comfortable with public speaking, please consider becoming a lector at mass. Training will be provided. Lectors serve approximately once every 4-6 weeks and Holy Day Masses. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Carol at the parish office. Thank you, in advance, for your consideration.
