• RELIGION:– Puritans (Goal to “purify” Christianity)

• Followed strict rules and were intolerant of other religions• Life was dominated by the church

– Punishments– Not able to celebrate holidays

• ECONOMY:– Dependent on the ocean

• Fishing, shipbuilding, and logging • Traded rum for slaves from West Africa

Middle Colonies• New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware• CLIMATE/GEOGRAPHY:

– Cold winters, warm summers– All states were similar to NC in geography– Ideal for agriculture

• Known as the “breadbasket” because of the large amounts of barley, wheat, oats, and rye

• RELIGION– No single religion

• Quakers, Catholics, Jews, Lutherans and Presbyterians

• ECONOMY– Logging, shipbuilding, textiles production, and papermaking– Heavily dependent on agriculture– Big cities had craftsmen such as blacksmiths, silversmiths, and cobblers

Southern Colonies

• Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia• CLIMATE:

– Hot summers, mild winters– Perfect for farming– Hot summers caused the spread of disease

• Yellow fever and malaria

• RELIGION:– Anglican (Baptist or Presbyterian)– Spread out so religion was not as much a part of their

lifestyle • ECONOMY:

– Rice, indigo, tobacco, sugarcane, and cotton were cash crops.
