3 rd AA294 Seminar on Case Studies of Aircraft Design Design of Airborne Wind Turbines Time and Venue: Time: 2:15pm to 3:45pm, Wednesday, 13 th April, 2011 Venue: classroom 300‐300. Short Biography: Damon Vander Lind, chief engineer at Makani Power, holds degrees in physics and electrical engineering from MIT. He has been responsible for many developments at Makani including hybrid turbine/propeller blades, kite planforms which are stable in all flight modes, a robust predictive controller and a number of aerodynamic and structural simulation codes. Abstract: Makani Power is developing Airborne Wind Turbines (AWTs), which offer an extremely low mass, high capacity factor alternative conventional wind turbines. However, the large decrease in mass, material, and transport cost comes with the increased price and complexity of a flying structure. This talk will summarize the basic technology in addition to aspects of design related to reliability and robustness.
