Dundalk is on the up and upThe spring is back in the Dundalk step after a hugely positive week for the town on a number of different fronts.

Over the past number of days the feel-good factor in the area has been palpable with a number of significant events.

The revamped Market Square was officially opened on Friday and then seen in its full glory as Jedward played to thousands of fans on a sunny Sunday afternoon, a day after the Tain March stopped off in the town centre.

The huge progress made by the region since the Peace Process was underlined with the carrying of the Olympic Torch into Co Louth on Wednesday morning. A day later, the positivity surround-

ing the economic future was highlighted when multi-na-tional company, Prometric, announced details of contin-

ued growth at their official opening.

On top of that came the news that the controversial

Thorp reprocessing facility in Sellafield is closing, which

THE transfer of 290 Voda-fone call centre jobs from Ireland to the UK official-ly took place on Monday the communications giant has confirmed. Fifty em-ployees will be in place in the Newry call centre from next week while both Irish call centres will remain

open for a period until the individual preferences of current employees are ad-dressed.

Last week staff in Dublin and Dundalk were issued the terms of their redun-dancy following weeks of negotiations between the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and the mo-bile phone operator and the

call centre staff provider.CWU members voted for

industrial action in April, forcing Vodafone to extend the May 8 deadline for the transfer of jobs. A month of talks ensued before a deal was struck.

Terry Delaney from the CWU said that they worked hard to get the best redun-dancy terms they could for

their members and that they will continue to condemn Vodafone for the decision to outsource jobs.

Vodafone staff have se-cured a redundancy package that includes six weeks pay for every year of service. Some will continue to work with the company in their Mountainview call centre however it is clear that the

positions in the Dublin call centre will be limited and competition for posts will be high.

Vodafone staff have been advised they must indicate the position that they would like to take up as soon as possible and if unsuccess-ful, Newry or unemploy-ment will their next step.

Rigney Dolphin perma-

nent employees were offered a package of two weeks pay for every year worked as well statutory redundancy payments, depending on legal entitlements. Those on fixed terms contracts a termination payment of €1,800.

Those who do transfer to the Teleperformance call centre will have their current

contracts, whether Rigney Dolphin or Vodafone, fully protected. And fixed term Rigney Dolphin contracts will be offered permanent positions in Teleperfor-mace, subject to satisfactory performance. But as yet, the number of people choosing to take up the posts in Ne-wry remains unclear.

that he was taken immediately to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda”“Thankfully the fire was contained to just one apartment. The rest of the apartments have sus-tained limited smoke and fire heat damage” The residents were initially warned of a fire in the building thanks to a fire alarm in the building that activated soon after the fire started. The man who was taken to hospital, in his early 40s, is understood to be in a stable condition in Drogheda on Tuesday. It is not yet known how the fire was started and the area remains sealed off by gardai for examination.

Olympic Flame visits Dundalk schools

A DuNDAlk carer is organising a host of fundraisers over the forthcoming weeks as she tries to raise money for a trip to Zambia, where she will work and study as part of the louth charity ‘Devel-opment Perspectives’ overseas project.

Laura Maguire, hopes to travel to Zambia on

IT was an exciting start to a Wednesday morning as pupils and staff from a number of national schools in Dundalk, were given an amazing opportu-nity to witness the pro-cession of the Olympic Flame as it paid a visit during its journey from Belfast to Dublin.

This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic flame at close quarters and according to St Josephs National school princi-pal, Marcella O Conl-uain, the significance of the event was not lost on the pupils.

which is obviously very important” added Mar-cella.

The Olympic Flame then made its way to other schools including Bay Estate and the CBS Primary where hundreds of schoolchildren got a chance to pose for pho-tographs with the fa-mous old flame.

The flame had earlier crossed the border from Belfast into the Repub-lic as a symbol of the peace process. Olym-pic boxing medallists Wayne McCullough and

July 21 where she plans to help some of the poor-est communities in Af-rica.

Laura who works as a carer for people with disabilities says she has always been interested in volunteering work and decided on helping out abroad after speaking to representatives in the Appletree Foundation.

‘I do quite a bit of voluntary work around Dundalk, and I was in-terested in doing some volunteering abroad.’

“I got talking to people in the Appletree Founda-tion and they told me about the ‘Development Perspectives’ overseas projects.’

“I have to raise money to go on the trip and I’m hoping that people will

come out and support me as I organise various fundraisers over the next few weeks” explained Laura.

Laura currently has three events in the pipe-line starting with an auction in the Marshes tomorrow morning (Thursday) where she will be selling a signed Louth football jersey.

The fundraising drive will continue on June 23 when Laura organises a table Quiz in the Morn-ing Star cafe on Park St. A table of four will cost €20 and if you want to go alone it will cost €5.

Finally, fearless Laura will be at the Crowne Plaza on the July 1 where she will abseil down the side of the hotel in an ef-fort to raise funds for her

trip abroad.Anyone who would

like to donate to Laura Maguire’s voluntary work in Zambia can con-tact her on 086 0383264.

“We were all very ap-preciative when we were told that the flame was visiting our school. We only found out at 8:30 on Wednesday morn-ing so we immediately texted all the children’s parents and we set up a

stage immediately” ex-plained Marcella.

“The children have been doing different projects relating to the Olympics over the past few months so they all knew how significant it was that they were get-

ting to see the flame at close quarters

“We have a proud tradition of sport in our school and an event like this will only encourage children to get involved in athletics and ensure they keep fit and healthy

THE HSE have asserted that there is only a four to five month waiting list for access to metha-done clinics in Dundalk after it was claimed in a national newspaper that the waiting list was as long as 12 months in the area.

The HSE said that the information was based on waiting lists as of March 2011.

There are three metha-done clinics held per week in the county, two in Dundalk with an av-erage of 80 clients at-tending them each week.

Once a client is referred to the clinics the wait time to get into the pro-gramme is about five months.

There is an open refer-ral system, so GPs and other professions can refer to the methadone clinics. GPs assess the clients and deem if they are suitable to avail of the programme.

Once it begins the methadone prescription is issued by the GP and the client is advised to at-tend at specified commu-nity pharmacies where methadone is adminis-tered as prescribed.

The wait time could

be reduced if the num-bers of trained GPs in methadone prescription increased.

The HSE said the situ-ation would improve if more GPs were active in this regard and the North East Drugs Task Force is actively seeking the in-volvement of additional community based GPs in the prescribing of metha-done.

A spokesman said “We are constantly reviewing our services in order to ensure we are meeting the community needs.

Ireland has one of the highest rates of drug re-lated deaths in Europe

and as use stabilises throughout the EU, it continues to increase in Ireland.

The demographic of users in the county is largely young men, with the numbers ever in-creasing.

Dundalk still has a nee-dle exchange programme that reports those who use the service as being mostly men in their 20s and 30s who are proac-tive and conscious of the dangers they are in.

However it provides only a snap shot of the problem as they can only distribute to people over 18 years old.

THE annual Cycle in the Park – Fun day Sunday will be held in St Helena Park on Sunday June 17 from 2pm to 5pm. This event is part of Bike Week 2012 which takes place from June 16 to 24 with cycling events happening all over Ireland.

A day for all the family to enjoy will commence with activities for under 12s including proficiency tests, tutor laps, slow bike races, bouncy castle, face painting,

For the not so young there will be bicycle workshops, music and the cy-cle path tour of Dundalk. Once again all events are free so come along, bring a picnic and enjoy a family day out.

An event that is due to draw a crowd will be the spectacular sight of a High Nelly Run at 3pm – so be sure not to miss out on this.

For those who wish to take part in the cycling activities please bring along your helmet and safety gear.

THE Cooleys Hill Trek and Bar-beque will take place on Sunday June 17 with registration at The lumpers pub, Ravensdale.

Fast Level and Moderate Level registration is at 10.30 and Easy Lev-el registration at 11.30am. The treat will start at Noon. Walkers can pre-register at Outdoor Exchange, long-

walk, Dundalk, at 9320789. Dress ap-propriately for weather conditions.

DESPITE the early hour and the inclem-ent conditions, a large crowd lined the Bor-der on Wednesday morning of last week to witness the historic crossing of the Ol-ympic Torch into Co Louth.

The ceremony itself may have been rela-tively straightforward, but the significance of the occasion was huge.

Not alone was it a chance to witness the symbol of the global Olympic movement, but from a local point of view it was another indication of the huge progress made by the Peace Process in recent years.

Bryan Knipe, Sophie Courcier, Caoimhe Wallace, Niamh Mur-phy, Sarah Cairns and Kristina Saroka.

The event was wit-nessed by chairman of the London Organ-ising Committee for the Olympic Games, Sebastian Coe, before the Torch was taken to Dubln by car for a day-long celebration.

Michael Carruth, the 1992 hero, revealed af-terwards: “It is fantas-tic, the torch is what is good about sport. It is a fantastic occasion for everyone, north and south of the border.”

NORTH Louth is set to benefit from a new cy-cling route after funding was granted for a 6.2km cycling coastal path from Omeath to Carling-ford.

The project will re-ceive a total of €687,000 and is one of 16 separate cycling projects built across the country over the coming years amounting to an addi-tional 334 kilometres of cycleway as part of the National Cycle Net-work.

The planned cycle path will run along an old railway line between Greers Quay, Omeath and Carlingford, with future potential for this route to form part of a

32km route from Dun-dalk to Carlingford and on to Newry.

The announcement by Public Transport Minis-ter, Alan Kelly, outlining a €7m investment pro-gramme for cycle routes which included the Omeath to Carlingford path was greatly wel-comed by project leader Kevin Woods, Innova-tive Committee, Louth Economic Forum.

‘This is the very es-sence of an area working together and what can be achieved. The local landowners were ex-tremely supportive when I approached them and understood the benefits that this would bring to the area”, he said.

completed a hugely satisfactory week.

Mark Dearey, who along with Constance Short, Ollan Herr and Mary Kavanagh, brought a Su-preme Court action in an attempt to stop Thorp opening in 1994, said that the closure was a boost for Dundalk.

“It is great news that by 2018 Sellafield will stop reprocessing nuclear waste and turn its atten-tion to decommissioning. There are still issues that need to be ad-dressed in relation to storage of radio-active material but this re-ally is a very positive step.”

Meanwhile Jedmania hit Dun-dalk’s Market Square as children (not to mention a few adults) screamed in delight as the tall haired pop twins bounced onto the massive stage on Sunday af-ternoon.

With glorious sunshine pour-ing down on the packed Market

Square the Lucan twins sang and danced for over an hour in front of their adoring fans.

Speaking after the event, or-ganiser Stewart Agnew said he was blown away with the reaction to the show.

“It went off better than I ever could have expected” admitted Stewart. I thought that there was a real buzz about the town on Sunday and that is something that maybe has been missing from Dundalk in recent years.

“We had 3500 people in the Square for the concert and every-body I’ve been talking to since has said they had a whale of a time. The icing on the cake for us was the fantastic weather and it helped contribute to what was a great day for Dundalk”.

The screening of the Ireland versus Croatia game also proved to be a big hit with the public.

Finally in what was an unprec-edented week of good news for the town, Prometric announced

that the company has exceeded — in just six months — its jobs plan for all of 2012, raising its Dundalk-based workforce to 52 professionals in test publishing, software engineering, business analysis, project analytics, execu-tive and project management, hu-man resources, finance and ac-counting.

Tony Kavanagh of Marian Park was granted further time to pursue

the recovery of the bracelet and the return of all the property or to raise compensation to ensure the injured party was not at a loss. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned a charge of theft to October 20.

THE children of St. Francis NS Blackrock dressed in green on Tuesday June 5 to mark World Environment Day, and to re-mind people of the importance of caring for the planet.

The children looked at Rain-forests in particular, and dis-cussed various ways they could do their bit - choosing products made from managed forests, re-using items made from for-

est materials and choosing products made from alterna-tive materials.

The pupils at St. Francis NS are no strangers to the eco-challenge. They were the proud recipients of a second Green Schools flag for their work on energy conservation this year, having previously earned a Green Flag for Litter and Waste Management.

They take part in the Annual national Spring Clean, and are keen beach combers. They have been busy growing veg-etables and have planted sum-mer flowers to enhance their school grounds. The children have applied for their first En-vironental Award from louth Co Council this year and hope to add this to their growing list of achievements.

DuNDAlk’S Relay for life committee have called on the peo-ple of County louth to join them once again in helping to raise vi-tal funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

The hugely successful event which is now in its fourth year raised a very impressive €112,000 for the ICS last year and they hope to equal if not better that total this year.

During an official launch in the Marshes shopping centre last Fri-day, Relay for Life co-ordinator Kevin Delaney explained what exactly the Relay for Life is all

Life was the first of its kind in Ireland and the response by people in the area over the last few years has been fantastic.

“Last year we had 29 teams so it would be great if we could hit the 30 mark this year and try and beat last year’s total.

“On the day there will be a multitude of entertainment activities throughout the 24 hours which will help create a wonderful atmosphere.

“As well as raising vital funds to support the Irish Cancer So-ciety’s work, Relay is held to increase cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, re-

member those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against cancer”. he added.

“This is a great oppor-tunity to find out more about the Relay for Life Dundalk, how it works, how you can become involved and how it will benefit our community, so join us to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.” urged Kevin.

Imagine how exhausted you would be having just completed a marathon. a gruelling twenty six mile slog in what many consider the ultimate in endurance tests. Now imagine running that marathon having just completed a 112 mile cycle and a 2.4 mile swim. This is what Dundalk’s Bryan McCrystal did last month as he completed the Lanzarote Ironman competition in a very impressive 9 hours and 24 minutes finishing 12th overall and best of the Irish in what is regarded as one of the toughest ironman courses in the world.Bryan, a former footballer who played youth and reserve team football for Leeds, first got bitten by the triathlon bug back in 2007 when he went to see an event back Castlewellan. “Initially I’d committed to running the Dublin marathon in 2008 as a way of keeping fit after my football career ended due to a knee injury” explains Bryan. “I completed that in less than three hours. I enjoyed running the marathon but I was fed up with running alone so I joined the local Setanta Triathlon Club and it’s all kicked off from there really I suppose.

mind trying not to give up. “You see and read about athletes having mid-race meltdowns and you wonder will it happen to you. It’s tough to keep going but you just think about all the sacrifices you’ve made and you don’t want to let down family and friends who have supported you.” as Bryan freely admits, swimming is the weakest part of his triathlon. he tends to lose time to his rivals during the swim but his prowess on the bicycle enables him to make back all of this time and more over the 112 mile cycle.“When I get on the bike I just chase, chase, chase. It is without doubt the strongest part of my triathlon. For the moment I’m just really enjoying competing with the professionals and last week’s race in Lanzarote was a great confidence booster.“I don’t know where It’s going to take me but I’m relatively young in the game as the best triathletes tend to peak in their late thirties. “But as I say, it’s a bug and I enjoy the buzz when I’m out on the road. I aim to keep on improving and keep on competing. Faster, better and stronger. That’s the plan.”

“I made the decision to race professionally as I was achieving the same times as the pro guys so I thought I may as well go for it. My full time job is as a jeweller in Baldwins Jewellers but I’ve been taking the triathlon seriously for the

past while and I probably train about 12-14 hours a week.” says Bryan.People say you have to be mad to take part in a triathlon but for me it’s a bug at this stage. When you’re out on the course, your body is aching and you’re battling with your

Extension approvedCOuNTy Louth VEC has been given the go-ahead by the Department of Edu-cation and Skills to make arrangements for the con-struction of three new classrooms at Bush Post-primary School. The school’s enrolment figures have risen signifi-cantly over the last number of years and this has placed considerable de-mands on current accom-modation levels at the school. This trend is pro-jected to continue.Dr. Pádraig Kirk, CEO of the VEC, welcomed this latest news stating that, “the school’s projections for first year enrolments over the next number of years indicated a steady increase in numbers. Giv-en that current accommo-dation levels were already under pressure, it was necessary to commence planning now for additional accommodation needs. I wish to compliment the Department of Education and Skills for moving swift-ly with Co. Louth VEC to fast track this latest exten-sion at Bush Post-primary School”.

Thursday’s announcement serves as a significant milestone for the US-based company, which marked its official opening with a brief ceremony.

Prometric serves as a possible case study for how the Irish government can encourage sustainable employment growth by leading global companies. I am encouraged by the early success Prometric has shown and look for-ward to future announcements of additional jobs creation.”

Prometric’s three-year jobs plan projects between 100 to 150 new positions.

AN 18-year-old Dun-dalk man who admitted driving off without pay-ing for €181 worth of fuel from three local filling stations, received a nine month jail sen-tence which was sus-pended.

The case against Martin Maguire of Rockfield Court was outlined in February last at the local court which heard he hadn’t the money to pay for the diesel. The car he drove

bore false number plates, but a Garda recognised him from viewing CCTV footage at one of the stations.

Judge William Hamill put back the charges, along with a further count of handling stolen property relating to the false plates, and also two counts in respect of a separate public order incident. He requested a probation report and an assessment of the de-fendant’s suitability to

do community service, as well as providing him with the opportunity to pay back the money.

Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly said at Wednes-day’s sitting that the de-fendant paid compensa-tion.

The filling station of-fences took place at the end of May and early June last year at Maxol on the Avenue Road and also Castletown Road, along with Mace in Castlebellingham.

A check into the number plates disclosed that they were allocated to a blue Volkswagen Golf stolen from the Finnabair Industrial Es-tate.

The public order counts related to an inci-dent where Maguire was observed fighting with two other males at Miz-zoni Pizza, Park Street on February 3 last. He was very drunk and ag-gressive and was arrest-ed.

ASTON MArTIN VANTAgE

Aston Martin have given the Aston Mar-tin V8 Vantage chassis some tweaks inspired from the Vantage S – including a quicker steering ratio, big-ger brakes and 10 mm wider tyres. They have even added hill Start Assist (hSA) for more precise control on steep inclines. at the face there is a lower bum-per – complete with

aerodynamic splitter which houses a larger air intake that feeds the engine and front brakes. at the rear a diffuser creates added drama and function, while sculpted race-derived side sills com-plete the look. These techni-cal and styling changes have been applied to both the aston Martin V8 Vantage Coupe and Roadster models.

The hi-spec V8 430 bhp aston Mar-tin Vantage ‘S’ which is fitted with the Sports-hift™ II close-ratio sev-en speed automated manual transmission as standard. It also fea-tures a sports exhaust system unique to the ‘S’. It features a unquie motor sport inspired carbon fibre detailing and a hand-stitched leather interior plus a fully integrated satel-

lite navigation sys-tem, developed in conjunction with Garmin, is now fitted as standard along with Bluetooth and cruise control. The V12 Vantage remains unchanged, pow-ered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine which produces 510 bhp with a top speed of 190 mph and 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds.

so important not to ignore fatigue when driving, you risk going into a micro sleep, which is a brief loss of consciousnes. Your ability to concen-trate also wanes.”
