It will be seven years since the election of Pope Francis. Some expected rapid change and a quick reform of the Vatican. Francis has been working away quietly and solidly with his committee of cardinals. Numerous changes have prepared the way. He is keen to see change deeply embedded, not only in the structures but also in the hearts of people themselves. The new constitution for the reform of the Curia was sent last year for consultation to every country and to the Vatican administration itself. This year we should see the release of the document, Praedicate Evangelium (Preach the Gospel). It will make the mission of the Church central and replace the old power structures with a new model of servant leadership. The restructure will mean a new batch of leadership in Rome (ten of the cardinals who head Vatican offices are due to retire). In preparing the way for the reform, the pope said to the Roman Curia: There is a need to respect history in order to build a future that has solid roots and can thus prove to be fruitful. Appealing to memory is not the same thing as being anchored in self-preservation, but instead evokes the life and vitality of an ongoing process. He went on to say that; memory and tradition are not static but dynamic. Again, he warned against rigidity. We are also awaiting the document, which will result from the ground- breaking Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region held last October. This gathering affirmed the importance of recognising and integrating local cultures, and the impossibility of imposing a Western/European tradition on every part of the Church. It is an important step in the legitimate decentralisation, which the pope has been advocating for several years. This is controversial because some wish to retain a Rome-centred uniformity of teaching and practice. These two things alone should make 2020 a most interesting year! The Baptism of the Lord

“I BRING A GOOD YEAR” The Christ Child on a Donkey, Greeting card, Germany c 1500

2020 should be an exciting year for the Church.

The new constitution for the reform of the Curia was sent last year for consultation to every country and to the Vatican

administration itself.

We are also awaiting the document, which will result from the ground-breaking Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region held last October.

Best wishes

A sense of humour is a gift from God. Laughter unites us. On the way out the door to church, Mrs Smith accidentally dropped the beautiful cake she had made for the cake stall. With no time to make a new one, she ingeniously set a roll of toilet tissue in

the middle of the cake to give it support and then slathered icing around it. To conceal her embarrassment, she planned to buy her own cake at the stall. Though she hurried outside immediately after Mass, Mrs Smith was horrified to find that her cake was already sold! Her shock was compounded the next day at her monthly book club meeting at the home of a good friend. There on the kitchen counter was the very same fake cake she made for the cake stall. “What a beautiful cake,” Mrs Smith said, not knowing what else to say. “Thank you,” the friend said, smiling. “I made it myself.”

WANTED! - Interested parishioners

and/or parents to join the ‘CHILDREN'S LITURGY of the WORD’ volunteer team in 2020

The ‘Children’s Liturgy of the Word’ program (for children Prep to Year 2) is held concurrently with Sunday morning 8am Mass during school terms. After the opening prayer, children gather in the Hall to celebrate and learn about the Liturgy of the Word in a way that is engaging for their level of understanding.

What’s involved? A team of two volunteers are rostered one Sunday per school term to facilitate the approximately 20 minute session using pre-prepared material accessed anytime from an online portal. (https://www.kidsliturgy.com/).

Interested? Contact Ana Croger 0407 628 389 or [email protected] to join the team or to find out more! Interested volunteers are welcome to attend and shadow a session. New volunteers are paired with more experienced volunteers and are invited to attend the annual orientation session early in 2020. [Please note: As part of the Parish’s commitment to the Archdiocese’s Safeguarding Policy, volunteers working with children (considered a ‘high risk’ category) require a Blue Card (Volunteer), Police History Check and need to attend a mandatory 2 hour safeguarding training session arranged through the Parish Office.] NEW YEAR BLESSING OF THE HOME - a copy of the blessing and chalk are still available from the church for those who may have missed out at last weekend’s masses.

DROP-IN-FRIDAY Come and enjoy hospitality plus morning tea with some friendly people on the first Friday of each month in the Parish Hall 10am-12 noon. Learn to play cards. Join the knitting table or just join in the conversation. The first date for 2020 is Friday 7 February. All very welcome. PARISH MORNING TEA VOLUNTEERS – We are looking for volunteers to assist with hospitality after 8am Sunday Mass on a shared roster. Parish morning tea is usually held twice each month and is a vital parish community ministry. If you are available to help, please contact the parish office. ST STEPHEN’S CATHEDRAL GUIDES AND WELCOMERS invite you to an information session on Thursday 6 February at 10:30am to discover the delights of volunteering with them. The meeting will be in the Hanly Room of the Francis Rush Centre. If you enjoy meeting people and revel in good art and history, the rewards of becoming a volunteer guide is beyond measure. Training offered to all volunteers. For more details, please contact the Cathedral office on 3324 3030 or [email protected] by 24 January.

ALL THE EARTH

CHORUS All the earth proclaim the Lord, Sing your praise to God.

Serve you the Lord, heart filled with gladness, Come into his presence singing for joy!

Know that the Lord is our Creator, Yes, he is our Father, we are his own.

We are the sheep of his green pastures, For we are his people, he is our God.

Enter his gates bringing thanksgiving, O enter his courts while singing his praise.

Our Lord is good, his love enduring, His word is abiding now with us all.

GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us

For you alone are the holy one, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION When we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.

LAMB OF GOD Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

COMMUNION HYMN

A TRUSTING PSALM CHORUS

Lord, let your mercy be on us As we place our trust in you.

The word of the Lord is faithfulness and love His love can never be measured. His beauty is like nothing we have ever seen, So let us place our trust in him.

The word of the Lord means a patient, gentle God. His love can never grow weary. His mercy is as though our sins have never been, If we can place our trust in him.

The word of the Lord is fire burning strong. His love can never grow weary. His will seek and save the lost until we all return, So let us place our trust in him.
