From The Assistant Principal…

Dear Parents/Carers, This week at assembly I spoke about acts of kindness and how this is evident around our school on a daily basis. At this busy time of year, it is easy to get caught up and forget about the small things. Christmas is a special time for families and friends to get together. I believe that a small gesture can have a big impact on someone’s life. So, please find some time to chat with your child about how they can make a small difference

at this time of year. Acts of Kindness for Christmas Show your child the spirit of giving by packing up some toys to donate. Let your child lead the way in buying a gift for a less fortunate child. Talk to your child about giving a donation in lieu of receiving a gift. Wrap an extra gift and pop it under the Kmart Wishing Tree. Sing some Christmas carols to grandparents or elderly neighbours. Remember, if we all work together we can make the world a better place, one kindness at a time! Have a wonderful week.

...cont Making changes to class lists once they are set is very stressful. We have tried to head off such changes by providing ample time for one-time opportunities for parents to make requests and these are considered in the early stages of class formation. Usually, we don't make any changes after grade swap day because as professional educators, we have taken great pains in the development of homeroom classes. We have invested a great amount of time and effort into the construction of learning groups that take into account the needs of individual children and the ways they relate to various teacher styles. We know which children work well together and those who do not. Each class is balanced as much as possible with high to lower ability levels, and we are careful not to place too many children with behavioural problems in a single classroom. We have also taken into account student requests. These decisions are made very carefully by considering the best learning situation for all of our children. Changes at this stage of the process undermine school attempts to provide the best situation for all children. There will not be an assembly next Monday morning. The school will close at 2.30pm on Friday 22 December. We will be having a whole school assembly commencing at 1.15pm. This will be our closing ceremony for 2017. I invite all parents to attend. I look forward to meeting with families at the Christmas Concert on Monday 18 December at 6.30pm. Please note that due to OHS regulations this is an alcohol free event.

From The Leading Teacher…

Dear Parents/Carers,

It was very exciting to hear the winning entry for the Rowville Primary School Young Writer’s award in assembly on Monday. Well done to author Josephine in 1C for producing a wonderful story titled ‘Stripy’s Journey to London’. I asked Josie how she felt when she found out she was the winner:

“I felt very proud and so did my family. When I read the story in assembly I was very nervous speaking in front of so many people.” If you would like to have a read of Josie’s book, make sure you drop into our school library and ask Mrs Hicks where to find it. Thank you to Mrs Hicks for helping judge all of the wonderful entries. We had some amazing writing entered which made it very difficult to judge. Yesterday students at Rowville Primary School spent some time with their new teacher and class for 2018. Grade swap day is an exciting time and can also be very nerve wracking for students. I spent the morning talking to 2B about changes and the positive impact change can have on our learning. A book I have been reading this week which relates to change is called ‘The New Teacher’ by Sally Rippin. I am a huge fan of the ‘Hey Jack’ series and they are wonderful books that explore feelings. Sally loves to write stories with heart and characters that resonate with children, parents and teachers alike.

I look forward to seeing more Writer’s Notebook entries and reflections of the learning journey that has taken place this year for all students in our final week of the school year. Have a wonderful week ahead.

Rowville Rockets Junior Hooptime Basketball Team

After being victorious at both the District and Regional Hooptime competitions, the Rockets represented Rowville Primary School at the Junior Hooptime State Finals day.

The Years 3 and 4 team, consisting of Jonathan & Kiara (co-captains), Kalani, Nicholas, Max, Hayley, Emma and Ashana-Rae and coaches Ebony and Max, have been training consistently since late May, giving up many lunchtimes and recesses in order to be their best.

At the State Finals they came first in their pool before playing the qualifying final. Unfortunately they had a slow start and were down 14-4 in the first half, but they didn’t give up and showed great spirit! After an outstanding performance in the second half they went down 21-19. A very exciting finish!

The team’s dedication to training and to each other was amazing, as was their competitive spirit.

The Rowville Rockets ended up placing in the top 16 in the State out of 814 teams! We are so proud of them!

ROWVILLE SPORTING ACHIEVERS

Jessie recently competed in the Victorian Gymnastics Championships. She trains for hours and hours every week.

After placing on many of the different apparatus during the competition, Jessie won overall and is now the Victorian Champion for her age group.

A HUGE congratulations Jessie on an outstanding achievement!

Simone and Eloise are members of the KLD studio cheer teams. Both girls’ teams progressed through numerous competitions before qualifying and winning the Victorian State Titles. They then recently competed in the National Championships and were victorious again, with both teams coming first!

What a fantastic achievement girls after all your hard work. A HUGE congratulations!
