Anxious people want to be sure they are in control of all situations, but when things get out of their control they get anxious and direct their frustration on the nearest victim and/or sometimes unleash the frustration on themselves. By saying, “don’t worry”, Jesus intends to move people away from worries over worldly necessities towards reliance on God. The more we rely on God, the more we are free for a life of faith and the less we worry. We can face life with all its uncertainties and contingencies with the assurances that we are not alone. A Reflection From the Administrator’s Desk….February 26, 2017

Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A

I am sure many of us remember the popular hit song by musician Bobby McFerrin, “Don't Worry, Be Happy”, released in September 1988. In this song Bobby McFerrin contrasted worry and

happiness. About worry he says, "don't”; but about happiness, he says, “be”. In this weekend’s Gospel

we hear Jesus saying the same thing: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own.

today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Matthew 6:34 NAB).

Worries have no boundaries: we worry about bills, health, insurances, and all the demands associated with

raising children in this age. In fact, worry seems to live in every home. It forms part of our restlessness and constantly

haunts us with the “ifs” and the “oughts”: “what if….?” or “I ought to….” What if I lose my job? What if I fall sick?

What if I lose my husband or wife? Or I ought to finish this job before 5 pm. I ought to win this case. The ifs and oughts

can debilitate us to the point we get stuck in the past or the future and fail to enjoy the present.

Another name for worry is anxiety. Everyone becomes anxious from time to time. Anxiety affects a person's

whole being. It affects how we think and how we feel. But anxiety raises concerns when it interferes with life (i.e. when

there is no real threat or it goes on too long after the danger has passed.) Anxiety or worry derives from the desire to

control. Anxious people want to be sure they are in control of all situations, but when things get out of their control they

get anxious and direct their frustration on the nearest victim and/or sometimes unleash the frustration on themselves. By

saying, “don’t worry”, Jesus intends to move people away from worries over worldly necessities towards reliance on

God. The more we rely on God, the more we are free for a life of faith and the less we worry. We can face life with all its

uncertainties and contingencies with the assurances that we are not alone. God is in control for better or worse.

God is good all the time; all the time God is good! Fr. Linus Umoren

  • Lent A time for prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Each year the Lord Jesus calls the entire Church to a

special season of penance and renewal. As we begin this

holy time of Lent, we should reflect on our need for

conversion of heart, prayer, charitable works and

penance. The season of Lent extends this year from Ash

Wednesday, March 1, 2017 to the Mass of the Lord’s

Supper, April 14, 2017 inclusive. The rules for

    abstinence and fasting are:

    1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain

from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all

    Fridays of Lent.

    2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age

is also bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good

    Friday.

    3. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fasting and

abstinence is only one full meatless meal. The other

meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may

be taken according to one’s needs, but altogether

they should not equal another full meal. Eating

between meals is not permitted on these two days,

but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are

allowed. When health or ability to work would be

seriously affected, the obligation of the law is

modified. Because Lent is a special season for all

Christians, we should not lightly excuse ourselves

from these penitential practices. To completely

disregard the law of fast and abstinence is seriously

    sinful.

    Next Sunday, March 5 @ 1 p.m.

The first six-week session is ….

“Lent-It is not for just giving up

    anymore!”

Encouraging Lent to be more than just a time of penance, but a time of

    re-evaluation of our commitment to

God through service and love. We

don’t have to just give up something, but pay forward the

    grace God has given us.

    Stations of the Cross Schedule

Every Friday during Lent Stations of the Cross

will be offered at 8:30 a.m. at Holy Family

and 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart. Come walk

    the journey of Christ!
