Here we see the scraper on top of the bowl with the lathe in reverse . The next part was to reverse the bowl and remove the centre before doing this Andy said that you could save some of the timber in the middle if you had a coring jig or with a parting tool here we see Andy ex- plaining how to remove as much of the core as possible with a recess in the cen- tre then the parting tool is used at an angle to the centre to remove the core. Once the core had been removed Andy decided this could be used for a lid as see on this bowl. Notice the deer horn finial on the top The next project was an emerging bowl , first was to mount the blank central the turn the outer bowl . Then the blank was cut in half and re- mounted to turn the inner bowl not the wedge at the back of the bowl to give Support The last and final project was a Yew earring holder with hidden ring box, Mounting the blank Andy went about making the shape and drilling the holes at the top then parting off just of the base made a small recess big enough for a ring but hidden by the cut and shape of the base as seen here Thanks to Andy for a great demo and for the fun projects which I am sure will turn up on the competition tables Sometime.

Tuesday Hands On Night

with Ed Oliver

Tuesday 12th April 2016 Semi Spherical Bowls. Demonstrated by Ed Oliver

The Sycamore blank wasmounted on a screw chuck.

The outside ofthe bowl wasshape. Ed keptthe tailstock inplace duringthe initialshaping.

A spigot of approximately 5m.m. (1/4“) depth was cre-ated.

The inside of the bowlbeing created.Ed had created a wood-en cone on which heused to hold the bowlwhilst he removed thespigot.

The bowl ran true on the cone because Ed had markedthe centre of the spigot andbrought up the tailstock tohold the bowl in place whilstthe spigot was turned down toa small stub that was sawn offand sanded. The foot of thebase was deliberately madeconcave so that should thewood move the base wouldstill remain steady.

Members were eager to be one of the first on the newlathes.

Our thanks to the Commit-tee and for arranging forthe purchase of the newmachines – at a good price– and Mike Blundy for pre-paring storage trays for thenew machines. Our thanksis alsodue toMike for

preparing blanks for this evening’ssession.

Mike giving a lead and encouragingothers to have a go

John Dave Ron

Our very grateful thanks for Ed for demonstrating thisevening.

A Design Demo with

B.J Norman.

This month demo by B.J gave us and incite into hisworld of colour and how he applies different medi-ums to his work he we see a nice Vase however withcloser inspection it is covered with egg shells with notonly adds depth to the vasebut texture as well as theadded shades of the shell .This is on trial at presentbut you can be sure thetechnique will be refinedover the next few months.

Over the course of thedemo B.J. showed the au-dience a variety of appli-cations although on cardThe reason is to test theprocess first as see herewere he applied a masking

tape to the cardthen with anAirbrush ap-plied a differentcolour over theboard then re-moving themasking taperevealed thepicture under-neath

here we se an application of colour on a board withdust applied to make it like the Saturn's rings

Here we see another application ona finial with watered down irides-

cent paint ap-plied over a blackmedium here wesee the start thenwith the differentliquid colour ap-plied over the topwe see the nextstaged once thisis dry an application of lacquer issprayed on to seal the piece

The next part was an ex-citing piece when a col-oured board was sprayedwith a water mist allowingit to settle in droplets thenwith a lacquer spayed in afine mist from each sideof the board it was wasallowed to settle on the water and seal it then left to drybefore revelling a droplet effect on the board

Here we see another trial process B.Jhas tried on copying a photo onto aboard with a small demo on using thetexturing tool andwood applied directlyto the texture revel-ling a colour as seenhere it was anotherexciting demo by B.J.And a lot for club

members to try in their own studios.

May Wood turner of the Month saw another great displayof work from the members with three categories to judge itwas nice to see so many help with the judging . In the Nov-ice Division the award went to one of our new membersRoy Bridgland for his offset pedestal bowl.
