Further Open Mornings will be held on the 12th

October (parents

and carers only) and on the 19th

October for children commencing

Prep in 2017. Please contact the school office if you have any

queries in rela#on to these events or enrolments for next year.

A love of reading is a wonderful advantage for any child to have.

This week many Mareeba businesses got behind this message, by

generously giving up their #me to read a story to students from

our school. Main Street Mareeba was abuzz with excitement as

students and teachers walked into town to enjoy listening to a

story or two. Many thanks to all the businesses who supported this

ini#a#ve and to Mrs Hannah Simpson and her team for all their

organising in prepara#on for this very worthwhile and successful

event.

Special congratula#ons this week must go to Daniel Penn who,

despite strong compe##on, won the Rotary Voice of Youth

Speaking Compe##on on Thursday night. Well done, Daniel!

Congratula#ons also to the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams who both

narrowly defeated St Thomas in the annual Wayne Srhoj Cup on

Friday a5ernoon. Great sportsmanship was displayed by all

involved despite the nail-bi#ng score lines.

Swimming commences this week. Please ensure that your child/

children have returned the permission notes and that payment for

the lessons has been received so that they can par#cipate in this

important water safety program. Years 1 and 2, PREP A and C,

Family Group and Yr 5 swim on Wednesdays and Years 3, 4 and 6,

PREP R,P and ST swim on Fridays.

Thank you to all of you who have already sent through le)ers and

emails with regard to class preferences for 2017. Please remember

that these requests need to be received prior to COB Friday 14th

October. Requests can be sent via note to the office or emailed to

[email protected]. It is also important to note

that, whist we do our best to accommodate requests, these

cannot be guaranteed. A reminder that Monday 17th

October is a

Pupil Free Day and there are no classes on this day.

Finally, well done to each of the students who a)ended our 100%

A)endance Morning Tea celebra#on on Wednesday. Everyday

counts, especially in Term 4 as we complete and consolidate the

year’s learning and prepare founda#onal learning for 2017. Thank

you to Mrs Burton for organising the event and to Mrs Angela

Toppin for presen#ng the cer#ficates and pencils to the proud

students. Once again, welcome back to a busy Term 4!

- Mandy Whybird, Principal

Term 3 a)endance results are in and the

winners for the term are as follows:

Term 4 a)endance data has started very

strongly. On parade this week, lots of

classes received a)endance cer#ficates

for reaching our school target of 95%.

Great work to those classes for a really

strong start. Please contact the school if

your child is unable to a)end for any

reason. It is important that we know

where all our students are each day.

Congratula#ons to 1R, who have started

the term with very strong a)endance.

Keep up the great work!

Voluntary Contribu7on Fee

Please be aware that Monday 17th October is a Pupil Free Day. The school office will only be

open from 9am - 2pm on this day.

The ‘HAVE’ Project

This year we have been lucky to be a recipient of a one

-off HSBC Bank and Barnardos Australia grant which

we’ve called the Hearing And Vision Examina#on or

‘HAVE’ Project. As we know that being able to hear

and see clearly is important for learning—teachers

have been able to refer targeted students’ hearing or

vision examina#ons to see if they need any medical

follow up or glasses. This has happened in school #me

so that parents did not have to pay for the assessments

or take #me off work to take the students to have the

assessments done. So far this year 40 students have

had their vision checked by Andrew Howell at Eye Sup-

ply Optometrist. 6 of those students are wearing glass-

es and their teachers report that they are now be)er

able to engage in learning. 63 students have had their

hearing assessed by Cairns Audiologist Gerald De

Favero. 10 did not pass their examina#ons and their

parents have followed up with medical interven#on.

Teachers were also advised of student hearing

difficul#es and were then able to put in place sea#ng

plans and teaching strategies to support hearing

difficul#es. We’d like to thank HSBC Bank and

Barnardos Australia for awarding us the funds for the

‘HAVE’ Project at Mareeba State School this year.

Relay for Life Colouring Compe77on

Only one week le5! Please hand in all

colouring compe##on sheets to the

Mareeba Library by Tuesday 18th October.

As term four rolls around and the weather starts to heat up, it can only mean a couple of things… it marks the

start of a busy term full of swimming on Wednesdays and Fridays. Years 1, 2 and 5, PREP A and C, and Family

Group swim on Wednesdays and Years 3, 4 and 6, PREP R, P and ST swim on Fridays.

On Friday 14th

October, 8 Mareeba SS students are going to Cairns to par#cipate in the regional T20 Blast

Cricket challenge, a5er successfully compe#ng last term at Dimbulah State School. Good luck boys and girls!

In other news, on Friday 7th

October, Mareeba SS challenged St Thomas’ School

in the annual Wayne Srhoj Cup. In two very hard fought matches, Mareeba State

School came away victors with the girls team winning 2 goals to 1 with Tenean

Brimm winning Player of the Match. This is the third #me the girls team have

won the trophy, reclaiming it from St Thomas’ who had it in 2015. The boys

game was also very close. With the scores locked at 2 goals each at full

#me, the game went to a penalty shoot-out with the end result of 3 goals

to 2 in favour of Mareeba State School. Sunnie Fraser won Player of the

Match and went a long way to ensuring Mareeba li5ed the Wayne Srhoj

Cup trophy for the first #me. A big thank you goes to the groundsman Brad

Mar#n and the boys’ coach Ronnie Lepora# for organising the field.

HPE News

Term 4 is a busy and exci#ng #me for students and

teachers. As well as the usual curriculum expecta#ons in

the classroom there are a few extra-curricular ac#vi#es

occurring this term. The Read-a-thon is already underway,

a Book Fair will be held in the library during week 4 (always

a good place to look for Christmas presents!), ‘The Di)o

Show’ for Years P—2 will take place on Friday, October 21st

and, most importantly, swimming starts this week.

Below is a quick outline of what each year level will be

doing as part of their English curriculum in Term 4.

- Prep - Write an informa#ve report on an animal to display

in the library

- Year 1 - Write a procedure on how to make a pillow for

‘The Very Cranky Bear’

- Year 2 - Write an informa#ve text about ducks

- Year 3 - Write and present poetry culmina#ng in a parent

a5ernoon

- Year 4 - Interpret and evaluate a humorous poem

- Year 5 - Create a new character to add to a scene from

‘Finding Nemo’ and present the scene to their class

- Year 6 - Create a biography about ‘Red Dog’ that includes

relevant images.

On Thursday 6th

October Zoe Adams and

Daniel Penn

represented Mareeba SS

at the Rotary Junior

Speaking compe##on

held annually at the

Mareeba Interna#onal

Club. This year saw 9

student representa#ves

from 5 local schools

including Biboohra, St Thomas’, St Anthony’s

(Dimbulah) and Mt Molloy. Compe##on was

fierce. All students performed well but a

huge congratula#ons goes to Daniel Penn

(6T) for his outstanding performance on

‘Table Manners from across the World’.

Daniel spoke well, and his topic whilst most

unusual, proved very entertaining for all

present. The compe##on has been running

for the past 18 years and this is the first #me

since 2012 that Mareeba SS has secured a

win.

- Hannah Simpson, Deputy Principal

Friday, 7th October saw the Mareeba Main Street come alive with

over 450 Prep—Year 3 students hiTng the town to listen to our

fabulous community members read. The ‘Big Day Out of Reading’

was the first of its kind for Mareeba SS and hopefully one of many

to come. The day consisted of 21 classes heading into the local

community to listen to business owners and service providers

read a story about ‘farming’. Many of our students think that

reading only happens at school because their teachers tell them

to, and the lack of intrinsic mo#va#on to read has been lost in

many of our students. The aim of the day was to bring back the

love of reading in all students and to show them that no ma)er

what path you choose in life, reading is an important part of that.

The idea stemmed from the ‘Read to Me’ day in Tully with the

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce suppor#ng the school in its idea

to get the community on board to promote reading in our town.

The ‘Big Day Out of Reading’ will con#nue in 2017, hopefully with

more businesses and more students. Thank you to the following

businesses who par#cipated:

SWIMMING REMINDER

With the upcoming swimming sessions, please ensure that

your child's teacher has up to date informa#on about any

ear health concerns including grommets, ear infec#ons or

con#nuing health issues that may impact on the child's

swimming lessons. Please supply ear plugs and cap should

your child require them.

Mareeba SS RATEP Program

APPLY NOW! Are you an indigenous person who would like a

career in primary educa#on? Then RATEP is for

you. Study at the school and work your way up

from Cert 4 at TAFE to a degree at JCU with the full-

#me support of a teacher coordinator. Ring and

have a chat with Trudy on 40922556.

You may be aware the current 'Clown Purge' craze,

where people dress up as clowns and wander the

streets trying to frighten people, has arrived in

Australia. You may also have seen some coverage on

social media pages that schools have been

threatened.

Mareeba Police have been contacted in rela#on to

this and the advice is that any behaviour by

members of the general public with the intent to

scare or in#midate others should be immediately

reported to the police.

However, this reminds us that the Stranger Danger

message is an important one to discuss with our

children. Please take this opportunity to remind your

child of the steps to take should they be approached

by a stranger – regardless of what they look like or are

wearing. Children will feel reassured if they know they

have a plan should such a situa#on arise. It is also a

good #me to revisit the names of adults that children

can speak to if they feel afraid.

Our school takes the safety of our students and staff

very seriously and has procedures in place should an

unsafe situa#on ever arise. Students also regularly

rehearse emergency response procedures (ie fire

drills and lockdowns).

If you have any concerns in rela#on to this ma)er,

please contact the principal.
