Closing date: 20 May 2017 X1TJ0BVH-HL110517 Where or how did the idea for this range/series of short stories in The Curious World of Obby originate? The initial idea was born in my work with traumatised refugee children, using story telling to engage with them and for them to be able to express themselves through the characters. My background and training is as a psychological counsellor/therapist. When did you write your Obby first story? Obby was ‘created’ about 12 years ago. The story was much longer as its purpose was part of a therapeutic process with a group of refugee children. I re-edited it to a much shorter version with my Helping Hand story on the blog. This story is basically the first of the series. What age group is your target market? Between 7-11 years and adults. The spy story Zooma must fall, in particular, is aimed at adults. What are the most important lessons for young readers? That everyone is different, everyone is special, to embrace different cultures. To be curious about life. And have fun in the process. In one of the stories you touch on the topics of the Zuma Must Fall marches and junk status. Why do you believe young children should be made aware of these issues? That was just a fun story to bring a smile to my adult readers, making light of what is going on in South Africa now where the collective psyche seems a bit suppressed in these uncertain and challenging times. Let’s not forget that children do overhear adults conversations and this can influence behaviour and attitudes towards certain groups - the very thing that the ‘Obby’ stories are actively trying to avoid. Obby is about embracing all, irrespective of differences. The stories Faiza Jeneker reads to the learners of Hawston Primary School are appropriate to the age and grade. We discuss beforehand what story she is going to read and the little message in the story. She provides feedback afterwards. Why did you decide to base the story in Fernkloof Nature Reserve? I ‘saw’ Obby living in a magical place like Hermanus, with his ‘home’ being in the mountains in Fernkloof. Despite him being different he comes down from the safe confines of the mountain into the larger community of Hermanus and puts himself out there forming friendships, having opinions and overcoming barriers. He tries. He gets it wrong sometimes and it’s fine. And he has fun! Can the stories only be read on your blog or is it available from book shops in the form of a book. What is the main reason for this? I’m working on a book idea at the moment. The blog has made it accessible to more people. And it suits the short stories. Have you written any other books before or since?  No. What do you do when not writing? I love being in nature. Walking. Do you have a favourite place to write and do you follow a special routine when writing? Oh gosh no. I just write notes on my iphone. What was your favourite book as a child? Watership Down. It just stirred my imagination, hence the way I wonder about the dassie’s world. Where did you grow up and what are you currently busy with? I grew up in Durban, moved to Cape Town as an adult. I have been fortunate enough to have been able to work within different communities in Southern Africa. Seeing possibilities, especially for children/adolescents, inspires me to write. I am currently in the UK learning more about Child Bereavement.  Visit hermanuslife.com to meet the colourful characters featured in Robyn’s stories. The Grade 4 learners of Hawston Primary School (HPS) were introduced to Obby, the main character in a series of stories in The Curious World of Obby, by a volunteer by the name of Faiza Jeneker who reads to them twice a month. Jeneker says she started reading the stories to the learners in February after a request from author Robyn Rowe. “Councillor Elnora Gillion helped me get in touch with the school, and that is how the project started. “The aim is to teach the learners whose first language is Afrikaans, some English. I organised the outing to Fernkloof so the children, some of whom have never visited Fernkloof, could see where the main character Obby and his friends live,” she explained. The stories, published on Rowe’s blog hermanuslife.com, features a tiny little boy who lives in the mountains in Fernkloof with his friends like Cyril the Dassie. In a story titled “Serious Stuff”, published on 1 May, Rowe uses Obby and his friend Cyril the Dassie to illustrate the importance of stories and drawings in helping children cope with trauma. It also features several illustrations and short explanations of the different signs of trauma to look out for as well as some tips on how to help the child cope with traumatic occurrences. The short stories contain various life lessons, using everyday events to teach children about respect and doing their best. Grade 4 teacher Marjory Johnson says the most important lesson learnt was to come out of the “cave” and explore the world. “The children were very excited to see where Obby lives and were a bit disappointed at not finding him at the waterfall where he baths. The story and outing helped broaden their horizons and taught them more about nature. They are also more confident about English now.” Principal Julius Swart expressed his gratitude for the reading sessions. “It helps with memory development and concentration, as they have to focus and remember what they heard so they can answer the questions afterwards,” he said. Where  or  how  did  the  idea  for  this range/series  of  short  stories  in  The  Curious World  of  Obby  originate?  The  initial  idea  was born  in  my  work  with  traumatised  refugee  children, using  story  telling  to  engage  with  them  and  for them  to  be  able  to  express  themselves  through the  characters.  My  background  and  training  is  as  a psychological  counsellor/therapist.

When  did  you  write  your  Obby  first  story? Obby  was  ‘created’  about  12  years  ago.  The  story was  much  longer  as  its  purpose  was  part  of  a therapeutic  process  with  a  group  of  refugee children.  I  reedited  it  to  a  much  shorter  version with  my  Helping  Hand  story  on  the  blog.  This  story is  basically  the  first  of  the  series.

What  age  group  is  your  target  market? Between  711  years  and  adults.

That was  just  a  fun  story  to  bring  a  smile  to  my  adult readers,  making  light  of  what  is  going  on  in  South Africa  now  where  the  collective  psyche  seems  a  bit

suppressed  in  these  uncertain  and  challenging times.  Let’s  not  forget  that  children  do  overhear adults  conversations  and  this  can  influence behaviour  and  attitudes  towards  certain  groups   the  very  thing  that  the  ‘Obby’  stories  are  actively trying  to  avoid.

And  it suits  the  short  stories.Have  you  written  any  other  books  before  or since?  No.

What  do  you  do  when  not  writing?  I  love

being  in  nature.
