Among Latinos, Christmas Eve or Nochebuena is one of the most important family gatherings of the year. It is also the time when culinary traditions are passed down to the next generation.

Growing up in El Paso, Texas, cookbook co-author Yvette Marquez-Sharpnak remembers how precious Christmas time was for her family. As children, Yvette and her sister, Veronica Gonzalez-Smith, were welcomed at their grandmother’s home with the sweet smell of champurrado (Mexican hot chocolate) and the sight of freshly baked biscochos (sweet pastries). But this was not the time to just sit down and enjoy the hot chocolate;

the treats were the fuel they needed to participate in a traditional tamalada (tamale-making party).

Yvette, who now lives in Highlands Ranch, said that the tradition is now being passed down to the fourth generation. Each year around Christmas someone in her family hosts a tamalada, either in Denver, El Paso or in Germany, where her sister lives. The recipe is a gift from her grandmother Jesusita Mendias Soza, originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, who made her specialties until the age of 96.

A new direct fl ight between Denver and Mexico City — the only one year round — is sparking a new desire for an increase in trade and business relationships with Mexico.

“I’m thrilled about the fl ight,” said Guillermo “Bill” Vidal, president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.“The fact that Volaris is going to have this direct fl ight really does open the door to the business side in knowing that you can rely on going to Mexico year round.”

The Volaris fl ight was inaugurated on Dec. 8 as offi cials from the city and the state, including Vidal and Mayor Michael Hancock returned from a short trip to Mexico City.

“The goal was to build relationships so we could create the potential to have formal relationships in the future,” said Tim Martinez, senior economic development specialist for Denver, who helped organize the trip.

Vidal added that the trip also represented a major attempt at collaboration, to see how well organizations like the chamber could work with the state and city to piece together the resources each offer.

On both measures, the men agreed the trip was a success.

Mexico is already Colorado’s second largest trading partner, and their position as third largest trading partner with the U.S. is also steadily growing.

The Mexican economy is currently ranked as the 13th largest global economy and the 11th in purchasing power. By 2050, Goldman Sachs expects Mexico’s economy will be

ranked as the 5th largest.Colorado exports to Mexico totaled

more than $754 million in 2011 with agriculture products including meats and cheeses among the top exports. Also in 2011, Colorado imported more than $682 million worth of products from Mexico including X-ray plates, and road tractors for semi-trailers, according to information from the Colorado Offi ce of Economic Development and International Trade.

The most recent numbers for 2012 show data through September already outpacing what had been traded in September last year.

Stephanie Garnica, the state’s director of trade and investment for the Americas, said one of the largest growing demands from Mexico is for green technology – a result of a growing wave of governmental attention to environmental issues and a lack of their own production in the industry.

“Colorado has a good reputation in Mexico as a provider for those goods,” Garnica said. “There’s a lot support and growing demand.”

While in Mexico City, Garnica said offi cials met with a handful of companies looking at Colorado as a possible place to expand partnerships.

Though she couldn’t specify which companies those were, she said they included companies in the real estate sector as well as a candy company.

Consul General of Mexico Andrés Chao, who was also on the trip, said that he expects the Volaris fl ight to facilitate more connections among companies that already see the possibilities as attractive.

And while there are ways to communicate from long distance

through technology, making these connections in person is still critical.

“I would not be the same through technology,” Chao said.

But fl ights before the new Volaris fl ight weren’t business friendly.

“If you wanted to go to Mexico before it took you eight to nine hours, which for business meetings becomes very complicated,” Chao said. “You lose a day getting there and another day coming back.”

Offi cials said they would like to see more fl ights added during weekdays, and think it’s a possibility if Volaris sees

enough demand.Vidal and Martinez said they were

both surprised that Mexican business owners and offi cials didn’t realize that Colorado’s population of Hispanics had grown so much in recent years to more than 20 percent.

“There’s a growing middle class who need services and products. It’s just a wonderful opportunity to expand our horizons,” Vidal said. “The fact that we are also Latinos, and we share the culture and language, it makes it a natural connection with those communities.”

Vidal y al Alcalde de Denver, Michael Hancock, viajaron de regreso a Denver en ese vuelo luego de una corta visita a la Ciudad de México.

“La meta fue desarrollar relaciones para poder crear el potencial que lleve a relaciones formales en el futuro”, dijo Tim Martinez, asesor en jefe de desarrollo económico de Denver y uno de los organizadores del viaje.

Vidal indicó que el reciente viaje a la Ciudad de México representó un serio intento de colaboración entre organizaciones como la Cámara de Comercio Hispana y agencias estatales y municipales, para ver cómo compartir los recursos que cada uno tiene.

SEATTLE — U.S. Border Patrol agents will no longer serve as interpreters when local law enforcement agencies request language help, according to a new decree issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

The new guidance said agents should refer such requests to private services often used by government agencies.

Seeking language help is a common practice among local law enforcement agencies in Washington state. If a person is pulled over and can only speak Spanish, the U.S. Border Patrol is often called.

However, immigration advocates complain that Border Patrol agents ask people questions about immigration and in some cases arrest people suspected of being in the country illegally.

“The concept of language access should be without people being questioned about their immigration status,” said Jorge Baron, executive director of the Seattle-based Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, a legal aid organization.

Immigrants have grown apprehensive about calling local law enforcement agencies if they knew the Border Patrol is going to respond, he said.

The new Border Patrol guidance should help, even though it leaves agents some room for decision-making, he said.

The Border Patrol said last week it is trying to use its resources efficiently.

“The new guidance related to requests for translation services helps further focus CBP efforts on its primary mission to secure our nation’s borders.” a statement by Customs and Border Protection said. “CBP remains committed to assisting our law enforcement partners in their enforcement efforts.”

WASHINGTON — La población de raza blanca dejará de ser mayoría en Estados Unidos para 2043, según nuevos cálculos del censo que refieren un cambio histórico que ya está redefiniendo desde la conformación de las escuelas, la fuerza laboral y el electorado hasta las propias nociones raciales en el país.

Según el pronóstico oficial, difundido la semana pasada por la Oficina del Censo, el cambio demográfico ocurrirá un año después de lo que contemplaba el cálculo anterior, efectuado antes de que se conociera el impacto de la reciente crisis económica.

Estados Unidos sigue creciendo y es cada vez más diverso debido a las mayores tasas de natalidad entre las minorías, particularmente los hispanos que llegaron a Estados Unidos durante una ola de inmigración entre las décadas de 1990 y 2000, pero a raíz de la crisis económica que estalló en 2008, se moderó la llegada de millones de nuevos inmigrantes de México y otros países.

La transformación del mosaico demográfico del país tiene implicaciones políticas notables, las cuales quedaron de manifiesto en los comicios del mes pasado, en los que se reeligió el presidente Barack Obama con el apoyo del 78% entre los votantes que no eran de raza blanca.

and Northwest Immigrant Rights Project filed a lawsuit earlier this year seeking to bar Border Patrol agents from doing traffic stops on the Olympic Peninsula, claiming people were being pulled over and questioned over the way they look and without reasonable suspicion. The lawsuit is pending.

The Border Patrol has denied any discrimination.

Representatives of the National Border Patrol Council did not immediately return a message seeking comment. It previously argued that federal officials are buckling to political pressure from advocacy groups.

In May, union vice president Shawn Moran said traffic stops are a basic tool for agents trying to catch terrorists, undocumented immigrants and drug smugglers.

“they are little gifts of love and they remind me of grandma,” she said.

This desire to share and preserve her grandmother’s recipe turned into the Muy Bueno Cookbook blog and eventually the “Muy Bueno Cookbook: Three Generations of Authentic Mexican Flavor” where the two sisters and their mother, Evangelina Soza, share traditional and modern family recipes.

Yvette talked about her Christmas memories with Viva Colorado and shared with readers a gourmet, Mexican-inspired appetizer that can be prepared in minutes.

What are your most cherished Christmas memories?

The thing that I always remember is family. It was always a big event. We spent a lot of time with my cousins, playing tag or hide and seek, but there was always good food.

I remember everyone getting together for a potluck. My grandma would make tamales days before Christmas, and that was her gift to the family. People will pick up their pot of tamales from my grandmother and bring them to the party. Each person would also bring a specialty dish, like chile con queso, empanadas, biscochos and all kinds of baked goods. Biscochos are my mom’s specialty, she would always make her little wedding cookies for the parties.

Through time and distance, many people are unable to keep their traditions alive. Given that you and your sister are second-generation Mexican-American, why is it important to you both to keep your family culinary traditions alive?

I think because we were so close to our grandma and they were just very special memories that we did not want to lose. Those are the memories that will be with us forever. So when my mom is visiting and I see

my daughter, Maya, with my mom helping her in the kitchen, it totally brings back memories of me helping out my grandma, listening to her old stories. It is something that is very special to me.

Even though my daughter does not have the privilege of having her grandma, I am here to make those types of recipes. She loves making sopes (thick tortillas) with me. She is really good at the tortilla press, and my son, Blake, loves making empanadas. My traditions are a gift to my children.

Why did your family decide to share your recipes with the public?

No matter where you come from, I think everyone has special memories with their grandma or mother and their recipes. The dishes in the book just happen to be the recipes that are special to us.

Initially, we were not going to publish a cookbook, we were writing down the recipes to create a keepsake for our family. We started sharing our recipes in a blog, and it grew. It was amazing to hear people making our recipes or telling us that they been looking for a certain recipe for years and found it on our blog. The recipes

are for traditional Mexican dishes that people may not be able to find easily.

More and more, people move and lose touch with their family, and it is the food memories that always remind them of home.

How do you get your children involved in cooking?Letting them pick the recipes. My daughter loves trying

new dishes from magazines. At the grocery store my children are my little helpers. I

have an app on my phone with a list of groceries, and one of them is in charge of checking things off while another puts bags in the cart. They like the entire process.

I have them help me make salads. They feel like they are cooking because they prepare their own salads. As they get older I give them different tasks that make them feel important and involved in the process.

My son loves baking. For Christmas he wants pirate-shaped gingerbread cookies. This idea came from a book he has, where gingerbread cookies are dressed as pirates and they come to life in the middle of the night, and so that is what he wants for Christmas.

What dishes do you plan to have for Christmas dinner this year?

This time we’ll have a traditional American Christmas but with a Latin twist. We’ll make biscochos, tamales and ponche Navideño (Christmas fruit punch). It’s non-alcoholic, but we always keep a little tequila on the side.

Ingredients1 cup seeds from 1 large pomegranate1 French baguette2 cloves garlic sliced2 tablespoons olive oil4 ounce soft-ripened brie cheese(recommended: goat brie)1 cup apricot preservesRosemary sprig for garnish

DirectionsBreak open the pomegranate under water to free

the seeds. The seeds will sink to the bottom of the bowl and the rest will float to the top. Discard the white membrane and put the seeds in a separate bowl. Reserve 1 cup of the seeds and set aside.

Preheat oven to 400°F.Place garlic slices in olive oil and microwave for

1 minute to infuse the olive oil with garlic. Cut the baguette into 1/2-inch slices. Brush olive oil on one side of baguette slices. Lay bread on a baking sheet and place in the preheated oven. Bake for 5 to 6 minutes. (The bread does not need to brown, just have a toast-like crust on the top surface.)

Spread apricot preserves on toasted bread.Microwave brie cheese for 10-15 seconds to soften

the cheese. Cut the brie in half and spoon or drizzle the cheese on the toasted bread.

Place a teaspoon of pomegranate seeds on each slice.

Serve while warm.

Ponche Navideño (Mexican Christmas Fruit Punch)

About 20 ServingsIngredients4 quarts water2 cinnamon sticks8 whole cloves5 long tamarind pods, husk removed, and seeded

or boil the entire pod to make removing easier½ pound tejocotes or crab apples, left whole6 large guavas, peeled and cut into large bite-size

chunks2 red apples (of your choice), peeled, cored, and

cut into small bite-size chunks1 pear (of your choice), peeled, cored, and cut into

small bite-size chunks2 (4-inch) sugarcane sticks, peeled and cut into

small chunks1 cup pitted prunes1/2 cup dark raisins1 orange, sliced1 cone piloncillo, chopped or 1 cup dark brown

sugar1 ounce brandy or tequila per cup (optional)

DirectionsIn a large pot, over high heat, boil water, cinnamon

sticks, cloves, tamarind, and tejocotes. After it starts to boil, lower the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until the tejocotes are soft.

Remove the tejocotes from the heat, peel, remove hard ends, cut in half, and deseed. Return them to the pot.

Add guavas, apples, pears, sugar cane, prunes, orange slices, and piloncillo.

Simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring gently. Discard cinnamon sticks and cloves.

Ladle into cups, making sure each cup gets some chunks of fruit.

Add brandy or tequila to each cup (optional).

If shoppers don’t show up in stores soon, more “70 percent off” sale

signs will.After a promising start to the

holiday shopping season over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, sales have slowed, according to an analysis of data done for The Associated Press by sales tracker ShopperTrak. Worries about weak U.S. job growth and other concerns are likely to blame for Americans spending less.

That puts pressure on J.C. Penney, Macy’s and other stores, which had been offering fewer discounts this season to step up promotions to lure shoppers like Ron Antonette from Long Beach, Calif.

Antonette so far has spent about half of what he planned to spend during this holiday season on gifts such as Legos, a Wii U game console and Apple’s iPad Mini tablet computer for his two young children. Antonette stopped shopping after spending $1,000 over fears that Congress and the White House won’t reach a budget deal by January. A stalemate would trigger tax increases and spending cuts known as the “fiscal cliff.”

“I basically stopped moving forward in buying,” said Antonette, 44, who

runs a small public relations business and worries that he might not be able to take mortgage deductions on his house next year. “I feel like we’re in financial limbo.”

Antonette isn’t the only shopper who feels that way. Major stores don’t discuss sales during the holiday shopping season, but Wal-Mart CEO Mike Duke said during a recent speech in New York City that a recent poll of shoppers of the world’s largest retailer found that an overwhelming majority are aware of the threat of higher taxes. And some said it would lead them to cut back their holiday buying, he said.

Overall, holiday sales are up 2.2 percent to $659 billion from Nov. 1 through last Saturday, according ShopperTrak, a Chicago-based firm that tracks spending at 40,000 stores across the country. That’s slightly below the 2.7 percent increase over the Thanksgiving weekend when shoppers spent $22 billion.

The modest increase means sales for rest of the season will be crucial for stores, which make as much as 40 percent of their annual revenue in November and December. With only a couple of days left until Christmas, stores have a ways to go in order to reach ShopperTrak’s forecast of a 3.3 percent rise in sales during the

two-month stretch compared with the same period last year.

It’s like the ghost of Christmas past has returned for stores. In order to salvage the season, they may be forced to offer the kind of heavy discounts that helped boost sales last year, but that also ate away at their profits. That’s something stores have tried to resist all season: Promotions are down 5 percent so far this season compared with last year, according to BMO Capital, which tracks promotions at about two-thirds of mall stores.

To be sure, there still are plenty of 30, 40 and 50 percent off sale signs in store windows. But stores also have been doing more creative things with pricing to get shoppers to think they’re getting a better deal than they really are. Think: Offering jeans for $9 instead of $9.99, hoping round numbers will appeal more to shoppers, or selling two shirts for $20 instead of giving shoppers 20 percent off.

“The retailing nation is trying to get off the discounting habit,” said Paco Underhill, founder of Envirosell, which studies consumer behavior.

The fact that stores are struggling to find the right balance between pricing and profits during the holiday season is no surprise. They’ve been doing that since the dawn of department stores in the 1800s.

Perhaps the biggest change occurred in 1975, when the Consumer Goods Pricing Act repealed state fair trade laws, allowing stores to sell items at whatever price they want instead of what manufacturers dictate.

Prices like “$19.99” instead of “$20” sprang up because as Baba Shiv, a marketing professor at Stanford University who focuses on neuroeconomics, puts it: “When you see something for $9.99, the brain categorizes that as being $9 rather than $10,” he said. “Those things are still effective.”

But at a time when shoppers are more price sensitive, some stores have gotten rid of the ubiquitous “99 cents” in prices in favor of flat prices.

In fact, Kmart played up flat prices in its advertising and in-store deals on Black Friday with signs that read: “Experience our $5, $10, $20 Freak Out Pricing.”

“The effort was around being able to communicate clearly to our customer in gift denominations they commonly think within,” said Tom Aiello, Kmart’s spokesman.

If the price is right, shoppers will scoop up items.

Twenty-somethings Malia and Kyra Bennett were out at Lloyd Center Mall in Portland, Ore., recently when they spotted workout shirts at H&M for $5 that they had to buy. “We didn’t come to buy those, but they are only $5,” Malia Bennett said.

Bring on the Patriots, already. And while you’re at it, bring them to

Sports Authority Field at Mile High.The Broncos first clinched no

worse than the AFC’s No. 3 playoff seed Sunday by trouncing the Baltimore Ravens, 34-17, then learned a few hours later on the team bus ride from Denver International Airport to their Dove Valley headquarters that they are in the lead position for the No. 2 seed — because the New England Patriots were on their way to losing to the San Francisco 49ers.

Let’s see how effective Tom Brady is at operating his machine-gun-tempo offense in the hostile environment of Mile High.

The Houston Texans need only to win one of their final two games to clinch the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed, but the difference between the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds is substantial. The No. 2 seed gets a first-round bye and plays at home in the second round. The No. 3 seed must win its first-round game at home to earn the right to play its second-round game on the road.

In other words, the outcomes Sunday may well mean that if the Patriots and Broncos meet in the second round, the game will be in Denver, not Foxborough, Mass., where New England prevailed against Denver in October.

“We know how good a football team they are, but we’ve got to take care of our business,” Broncos linebacker Keith Brooking said of the

Patriots. “In order to concentrate on your business, and just worry about what you’re supposed to do, you do have to know your surroundings a little bit. We all know what’s ahead of us when we get to the playoffs, but at the same time, we have two big games coming up. We’ve got to worry about that first and foremost.”

Even if the Broncos’ next two opponents, the 5-9 Cleveland Browns and 2-12 Kansas City Chiefs, look like gimmes, this is the NFL.

“It really has been a one-week-at-a-time season,” Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning said.

With two games remaining in the 2012 regular season, here’s how the race for the AFC’s top four seeds lines up: Houston, 12-2; Broncos 11-3; Patriots 10-4; Baltimore 9-5.

Even while losing in embarrassing fashion Sunday, the Ravens clinched a playoff spot. The Ravens were supposed to give the Broncos their first serious regular-season test in two months.

Instead, the Broncos won their ninth in a row by decisively drumming the Ravens.

If the Broncos can’t lose at Baltimore, when will they? Until Sunday, the Broncos were 0-5 lifetime against the Ravens in Baltimore, losing by an average score of 28-11.

But all historical trends regarding the Broncos before March 20 are moot.

The quarterback who signed on with the Broncos that magical day, Manning, was never afraid of Baltimore. He had won four consecutive games at M&T Bank Stadium during his long tenure with the Indianapolis Colts, and eight consecutive games there overall.

One of those trends had to give. When’s the last time anyone saw Manning give in on anything?

“For sure he matters,” Dumervil said. “He’s been mattering all year. Knowing he’s had success here, I think it gave us an edge.”

To prepare this supposed showdown of top AFC teams, the Ravens made the unusual move of firing their offensive coordinator last

Monday despite a 9-4 record and only three games remaining. All the switch from Cam Cameron to Jim Caldwell did was bring the Ravens’ offense a lost fumble on their third play of the game, followed by four consecutive three-and-outs. With the Ravens seemingly about to get back in the game late in the first half with first-and-goal at the 4, quarterback Joe Flacco opted not to spike the ball with 30 seconds remaining but to try to catch the Broncos’ defense napping.

The Broncos cornerback picked off the pass, then raced 98 yards for a touchdown, barely outpacing Flacco, making it 17-0.

“I was just striding in,” Harris said, smiling while shrugging off the suggestion Flacco was gaining on him. “Just striding in. That’s a long run, man. People don’t realize how long that is. I haven’t run 100 yards in I don’t know how long.”

It was so long, it was the longest interception return in Broncos regular-season history.

During the Broncos’ current nine-game run, the Broncos have outscored their opponents by a combined 114 points, or an average margin of victory of 12.7 points.

The point has been made. The regular-season schedule stopped challenging the Broncos long ago. Not to rush through the holidays or anything, but bring on football in January. And bring it to Denver.

BARCELONA, España — Ochenta y cinco goles en un año se dice que es rápido, pero la marca que superó Lionel Messi el domingo pasado sólo fue alcanzada previamente por un futbolista, cuyo nombre se asocia irremediablemente con el gol: Gerd Mueller.

Apodado “Der Bomber” (El Bombardero) por sus potentes disparos al arco, el prolífico delantero alemán de los años 60 y 70 comparte con el astro argentino la sed insaciable por perforar redes contrarias, su menudo tamaño, cierto aspecto mundano poco asociado a un deportista de élite y la posición de delantero; aunque en caso de Mueller mucho más centrada.

Estandarte junto con Franz Beckenbauer del Bayern de Munich que se coronó campeón de Europa en tres temporadas consecutivas (1974, 1975 y 1976) y la selección alemana que ganó el Mundial de 1974, Mueller vivió un año de ensueño en 1972, cuando además de ganar la Eurocopa metió 85 goles, para promediar uno cada 4,29 días.

Messi superó la cifra el domingo al meter dos dianas en el duelo del Barcelona ante el Real Betis en la liga española.

Al argentino, que ya rebasó los 75 goles de Pelé el pasado 11 de noviembre en Mallorca con un doblete, le restan tres partidos en lo que queda de año para seguir sumando la cifra histórica.

En un 2012 mágico en el aspecto anotador, Messi se ha acostumbrado a vivir grandes noches, la mayoría ante su público.

Doce meses dan para mucha “Pulga”, y la afición azulgrana ha gozado de partidos como el de sus cinco goles en la goleada por 7-1 sobre el Bayer Leverkusen en octavos de

final de la Liga de Campeones, el 7 de marzo.

Era la primera vez que alguien conseguía cinco tantos en la competición, pero Messi tardó sólo 13 días en volver a dejar huella, rebasando la marca de 232 tantos de César Rodríguez como goleador histórico del club azulgrana. No contento con igualar el registro de 57 años de antigüedad, el “10” regaló un triplete para alcanzar los 234.

Siempre resulta complicado comparar décadas, y el fútbol ha evolucionado notablemente en los 40 años que separan los 85 tantos de Messi y Mueller. Pero el alemán opina que “era más difícil marcar goles en mi época: tenías delante al defensa central y un líbero. Siempre había dos hombres para marcar al delantero. Ahora solo hay uno.”.

La teoría es cuestionable viendo algunos de los tantos de Messi, escurridizo como Mueller cuando se encuentra rodeado de contrarios, y a menudo víctima de la dureza de los zagueros, que no saben cómo frenar su combinación de potencia, velocidad y talento gambeteador.

El Barsa fichó a Messi por vía del técnico Carles Rexach y tras hacerse cargo del tratamiento hormonal de crecimiento de “La Pulga”, de quien había dudas sobre su físico. El arribo de Mueller al Bayern en 1964 también desconcertó al entrenador Tschik Cojkovski, quien no tardó en apodarlo “Bajito Gordito Mueller”.

Pero si un trazo comparten ambos es su capacidad de asociación con sus compañeros. Con cada nuevo galardón, Messi recuerda que su éxito personal se debe al trabajo del colectivo, y la videoteca confirma que, aparte de su desbordante talento individual, tanto “La Pulga” como el “Bombardero” consiguieron buena parte de sus goles participando del juego coral de sus equipos.

Las combinaciones rápidas e intuitivas, al primer toque, incluso sin mirar, entre Messi y el resto de formados en la cantera azulgrana tienen precedente en el Bayern de Mueller, donde el germano tejía jugadas de parecida estampa apoyándose en Uli Hoeness o Franz Roth, aunque con menor fluidez.

Messi ya batió el récord de Mueller de 67 dianas en una temporada el 2 de mayo. Acostumbrado a superarse, registró una más, 68, con el triplete ante el visitante Málaga.

Veintitrés días después, en su último partido del curso, la final de la Copa del Rey, el rosarino estableció el récord definitivo de 73 con el segundo

de la victoria por 3-0 sobre el Athletic de Bilbao.

Previamente, el 6 de mayo había anotado su gol 50 en la liga, otro récord, marcando los cuatro de la goleada al Espanyol en el derbi y la despedida del técnico Pep Guardiola ante su afición. Pero ese medio centenar resultó agridulce por la cesión del campeonato al Real Madrid.

Alimentando la teoría de Mueller, cabe señalar que los registros de los máximos cañoneros en aquella década palidecen en comparación a los números actuales: Mariano Arias (Oviedo) y Carlos Ruiz (Athletic) se llevaron “Pichichis” respectivos en 1973 y 1975 con apenas 19 redes. Y José Garate y el propio Rexach compartieron el galardón en 1971 con 17.

Su descubridor explica que “el fútbol ahora es más zonal. Antes se marcaba más al hombre y se daban más patadas”. Pero Rexach tiene clara la diferencia: “Mueller tocaba cinco pelotas en un partido y metía tres o cuatro goles. Messi interviene más en el juego. Marca goles, pero también los da”.

En 1972, Mueller contaba 27 años, dos más que Messi en la actualidad. El “Bombardero” duró siete al más alto nivel, optando por retirarse en la liga estadounidense, donde sufrió problemas con el alcohol.

Así como su nula predisposición a cambiar de club en un futuro, el astro del Barsa reconoce que apenas ha visto alguna imagen de su predecesor en los anales futbolísticos, aunque admitió respecto al récord que “soy competitivo y me gusta ganar”.

Dice el refrán que un recién nacido siempre llega “con un pan bajo el brazo”. A “La Pulga” le sobran ingredientes y alicientes para seguir horneando goles. Y la gran clave: tiempo.

Jennifer Lopez dice que no quiere regalos en Navidad,

sólo espera darlos.“Me encanta ir a comprar

regalos de Navidad para todos y regalar a la gente para ver sus caras iluminarse y sorprenderlos, eso me hace feliz”, dijo la cantante la semana pasada.

Por eso lanzó su iniciativa “J. Lo’s Christmas Gift”, en la que pide a sus admiradores que hagan donaciones a sus tres organizaciones de beneficencia favoritas: Boys & Girls Club, el Hospital Infantil de Los Angeles y la Cruz Roja Estadounidense.

A cambio, entregará a algún afortunado dos boletos para el último concierto de su gira internacional “Dance Again” que se realizará en Puerto Rico el sábado.

Pero eso no es todo: también pagará sus boletos de avión y su hospedaje.

“Es hacer algo lindo por alguien, y ellos a su vez hacen algo bueno; es retribuir de algún modo”, dijo en una entrevista telefónica desde Australia, donde realizó un concierto.

Lopez promueve el concurso en Twitter con el hashtag JLOSCHRISTMASGIFT. A la cantante se le ocurrió usar el sitio de socialización para impulsar a sus admiradores a dar desde que se involucró más en plataformas como Twitter y Facebook, donde ha podido apreciar más de cerca la respuesta que tiene cuando convoca a concursos.

Tan sólo de saber cuánta gente resultó afectada y cuando escuchas las cifras... tratas de dar tu máximo”.

López regresará a casa para las fiestas de fin de año y dijo sentirse agradecida de poder realizar su primera gira mundial, especialmente porque pudo pasar gran parte de ella con su familia, por lo que “ha sido un año increíble” para ella.

La gira, dijo, fue una “experiencia que me cambió la vida”, pero reconoció que también fue por momentos algo pesada por tantos viajes.

Por eso se sintió identificada con Jenni Rivera, “la Diva de la Banda” que falleció el 8 de diciembre cuando su avión se desplomó al viajar tras su concierto en Monterrey, México.

“No conocía su personalidad, pero sabía de ella. Para mí, por el simple hecho de estar de gira, vives el mismo tipo de vida, ¿me explico? Se trata de viajar y hacer conciertos”, dijo Lopez.

“Ella se consideraba una empresaria, además de ser artista, y tenía hijos, y estoy segura de que iba corriendo a casa para ver a sus hijos en ese momento, así que tomó el avión a las 3 de la mañana. Es una llamada de advertencia para todos, es muy trágico. Ella era muy jóven, demasiado jóven y tenía cinco hijos. Me parece que no era su momento de morir, eso es lo que siento”.

Disney-Pixar realized they’d hit on a can’t-miss formula for animated blockbusters about the time “Monsters, Inc.” came out in 2001.

Find some fantastical corner of pop culture you can peek in on — after hours. From the lives of toys when the kids aren’t around to where scary monsters go when they’re not hiding in kids’ closets or the private lives of clownfish, comic book superheroes or video game characters (Disney’s new “Wreck-It Ralph”), these familiar but imaginary worlds have proven to be fertile ground for animation.

Whatever chances they take with the riskier “Up,” “Brave,” “Cars” or “Ratatouille,” taking children inside a world they have only imagined has been box office gold.

“Monsters, Inc.” may have lost the best animated film Oscar to “Shrek.” But ask any parent which film is aging better, and which DVD their children wear out, and the real winner emerges. Reason enough for a prequel, “Monsters, University,” to go into production. It comes out next June.

And that’s a good excuse for converting the computer-animated “Monsters, Inc.” to 3-D for a special holiday release.

Whatever his other accomplishments, generations of kids know Billy Crystal only for the comic stylings of Mike Wazowski, the one-eyed working stiff monster he plays in “Monsters, Inc.”

The perfect comic foil to Sulley (John Goodman), beau of the long-suffering and

equally one-eyed Celia (Jennifer Tilly), nemesis of the slithery Randall (Steve Buscemi), Mike is the guy who keeps his pal Sulley in tip top scaring shape — ordering up the closet doors that the monsters go through to frighten children, whose screams are bottled and converted to the energy that keeps the monsters’ world, and Monsters, Inc., going.

Until that fateful day that a teeny tot nicknamed “Boo” isn’t scared, and follows them back through the door. Kids, out of their element, scare the dickens out of monsters. Call out the haz-mat team and bar the door — all the closet doors, stored in a vast kids’ closet-door repository — until Boo is rounded up and order is restored to the universe.

That ingenious set-up is detailed to a staggering degree, from the décor each

child has on his or her closet door, to the vast variations of monsters on the job on the Monsters, Inc., “scare floor” — blobs and yeti and giant spiders and all manner of lizards, snakes and goblins.

The jokes benefit from perfect timing and the best running sight gag ever — big, hairy monsters, all scared to death by a burbling, giggling, “KITTY” shrieking tyke (voiced by Mary Gibbs).

This didn’t need 3-D to work. And the big question, on seeing it anew, is “How WILL they top this by taking us back to see these guys in college?”

But anytime Disney and/or Pixar goes astray in an animated way, they have only to look back at this, one of their best, to remember that magical recipe that works as well now as it did then.
