3 x 5 cards1. While you FLIRT, write your questions onto one side of a 3 x 5 card. Make sure to have

one question per 3 x 5 card.• Rewrite any author questions.• Use pictures to write I wonder questions.• Turn headings into questions.• Use bold words to write I’m curious about questions.

2. Read the section with the purpose of answering your question.• Highlight key words and ideas that help answer the question.• Talk to the text by writing other thoughts in the margin.

3. Once you finish reading the section, write a summary that answers your question on the other side of the 3 x 5 card.

• Draw pictures or make motions to help your mind make connection to the information.

• When writing the summary, close the book so you are only using your working memory.

• Check with a tutor, peer or professor for any questions you couldn’t answer.

The world's oceans are in peril. Runoff from modern life is feeding an explosion of primitive organisms. The 'rise of slime,' as one scientist calls it, is killing larger species and sickening people. In many places some of the most advanced forms of ocean life are struggling to survive while the most primitive are thriving and spreading. Fish, corals and marine mammals are dying while algae, bacteria and jellyfish are growing unchecked. In addition, we are choking the waters with plastics which do not effectively break down and are harmful to shore birds and marine mammals. The oceans, once thought to be so vast we could not do them harm, are suffering immensely from human impact. A harmful algae bloom swept into King Harbor in Redondo Beach, Ca. and caused a massive fish kill. A few people who came in contact with the water blamed the bloom for ear infections, flu-like symptoms and other maladies.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME

“This is the actual turnoff from Banff to the # 1 highway to Calgary. Great picture isn't it? They had to build the animals (especially the elk) their own

crossing because that was where the natural crossing was and after the highway was built there were far too many accidents. I understand it didn't

take the animals long to learn that this was their road.”
