• Over 90% of students have access to internet– Home computer– School computer– Smartphones– iPod Touch – Video game consoles

• Engagement is through the roof.– Students during class discussion with backchannel
outlet participate more than traditional class discussion.
– Teachers unrealistic fear of cell phones.– Responsibility and digital citizenship.

The Problem
• Students lack understanding of the process of problem solving
• Research says:– >Conceptual ideas and < traditional procedures =
>achievement– Schema based instruction addresses problem solving
strategies as students develop understanding of concepts– Gaming – increases attitude and motivation via 4 factors
- sense of challenge/accomplishment - increase curiosity- personal control - use of fantasy
ACMS Process
• Pacent Learning Solutions – Students still did not demonstrate mastery of all standards
even after 3 attempts
• Study tools – Increased confusion of which standards and how many more attempts
available for mastery
The Action Research
• Portable• Social Network Sharing• Translations• Embed options

Preliminary Results
• Time period• Conceptual Content• Treatment group
– 13% increase of passing from 1st attempt to 2nd attempt
• Control group (not using Quizlet) – 10% increase of passing from 1st to 2nd attempt

Next Steps
• Pre-K program will be repeated next summer and probably expanded
• Across 3 school districts (6-7 classrooms) are implementing iPad in the classroom
• Change in trends for Pre-K and K education
