    With determination on their faces and resolute steps,a horde of NSIians march down from their class tothe left of the admin, salvation within their sights.

     An opulence of cajoling and a promise of safekeepinghad led to their classmate relinquishing his decorouslytaken precious notes. Half an hour later, the missionhas been accomplished. With a spring in their steps,glimmer in their eyes, and a copy of the notes reverentlyclutched, the group segregates. Some amble on towardsthe hostel gates, only to make a pit stop, as the aroma

    of food wafts towards them or they get enticed bythe assorted juices. Te remaining ones head towardstheir secret dungeons, intent to make a dent in theirplacement season. Tis is an average day at NSI.

    While the term ‘NSIian’ is predominantly redolentof the students, there are individuals in the aboveaccount, who perhaps merit this title more. Tey arethe pivot of NSI and an integral part of our day. Withthe numerous batches of students arriving at andbidding adieu to the college, they have remained theonly constants. Tey are, truly NSIians.

    KHAN BHAIYATe man who cannot be moved.Sporting the typical ‘aam-aadmi’look, this man has stayed put ever

    since the college campus was shiftedto Dwarka. A gem of a person, thisNSIian caters to the thirst of hun-dreds everyday with his deliciousfruit juices and chaats which have just become more delicious overtime. If you are looking for some

    respite from the scorching sun andtorrid heat, Khan Bhaiya’s Fruit stall is the place to be. He

    loves to talk and share his thoughts and opinions to anyone who lis-tens, and it was no different when we had ‘sun-lit’ date with him in theNesci lawns with an orange juice in hand.Here are a few excerpts:•  Your NSI tenure - 14 years. “Serving since 1999 (with pride).”

    RAWA SIRHe is for everyone in the campus. Beit the placement issues or a quickFAQ on a company or any doubt onwhatsoever issue under the NSIsun, he is always there to shake off your stress! He is the ever approach-able, Rawat Sir. Here is what RawatSir had to say when we interviewedhim –

    • ime in NSI - over 12 years now• Over the years – I feel the grey-cell pool has diluted due to a larger

    uptake each year and non-standardization of the entrance examunlike the previously held CEE that was specifically conducted byNSI and erstwhile DCE.

    • College over the years - Tings have changed, and though there has been academic growthwith better placements, better infrastructure, hostels, and increase in seats, the students havealso changed. Tey are in total oblivion with their surroundings, as they have no connect withpeople like me.

    • Te NSI Identity - Te fests are the face of the college and make up for the identity of the col-lege along with its placements, though there has been a gradual degradation in these events.Earlier they were the heart of this college with astonishing biking stunts, glamorous lights, anda festive vibe, which is difficult to find now. It is sad to see that although students have becomemore organized by making committees and groups for the fests; they still cannot match theenthusiasm and extravaganza of the fests of their predecessors.

    •  A change you would like to see - I would like to be an official part of this college. I wish to investin the small cart of mine and have a permanent shack to serve the students. So many peoplewish to have coconut water, banana shake, mango shake, and I would like to be their provider. Ineed your cooperation and support so that my voice can reach the concerned authorities.

    • Interesting Fact- People say, that Khan Bhaiya generally has the know-how about all the work-ings in the college and he accounts all the credit for the same to - ‘having good relations witheveryone’. He is friendly with everyone, be it students or the people from the admin or profes-sors. He keeps his eyes and ears open and that has made him more aware of his surroundings.

    • Placement trends - Mass recruiters have scaled down placement uptakes due to market slump.(Pessimists, hold your horses! Optimism is the way to go.) Consultancy firms have picked up

    the graph! Great placements opened up hence.• Disappointment - redundant syllabus• Expert advice to great placements -Brush up your communication skills. More than your

    books, companies admire good, truthful, English-speaking communicators. Ask away! Duringplacement presentations of companies, ask as many questions. A dumb audience just puts offgood firms.G.K., thinking on your feet, surely works in your favour.

    • ip to the coming ‘Rawat Sir’- Work hard and try to innovate, improvise. Always.• NSI in a line - “um mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azaadi doonga.” Fits ‘literally’, going by the

    fact that it was quoted by the person our college is named after. Te only mantra is to work hardfor great placements.

    • (Better, not only rely on your ‘gift of the gab’, for this ‘gift’ has to come with being intelligentand hard working too for a hefty package!)

    •  Asides - He totally favours formation of the university to maintain the standard of NSI. Hisdisappointments include alumni emphasizing on ‘bright student’ recruitments only.

    ‘It is a beautiful sight when these students come just cluster around my cart asking for that one glass of juice. I really love them and

    they have reciprocated as well with tremendous respect and love for me. This is true happiness’

    People in NSI migrate from allparts of the country, and theyfind themselves pitted againstone another in the 1st yearhostel. Not being your run-of-the-mill Security Guard, Pan-

    dey ji is the fatherly statue with whomthey shared stories and grew comfortable away fromhome.• Over the years - Over the past 7 years, the behav-

    ior of the staff and professors has improved. Tequantity and quality of students in the collegehas grown.

    •  Your stint in Ramanujan Hostel - It was one ofthe best moments in this college. I had become apart of the family. Even now, it is heartening tomeet any of the old hostel residents and the bestpart is they have not forgotten me. Teir small-est gesture while passing by just makes my day.

    •  A message to the college youngsters - Your hardwork has led you to NSI and the journey thatstarts from here generally lands people in bigplaces.

    Fall semester’ 13 commenced with the usual charades. Tenervous, bright eyed first years basking in the joy of arriv-ing at NSI, the unapologetic sophomores hunting downfreshers, the meticulous third years plotting the road mapfor their careers, the sick-with-anticipation fourth yearsgearing up for their future. All in all, everything was inplace and was functioning the way it should be. But some-thing was gnawing at us all. W hat was it that was so differ-ent this time around that couldn’t stop us all from specu-lating in hush-hush tones?

    When an engineering college of repute like ours sees thecutoffs plummeting the way it has this year, it is bound toraise some questions over its credibility.

    Is our reputation declining? Don’t we publicize enough? Aren’t we one of the top choices for engineering aspirants?What went wrong this time?

     So putting all your questions to rest, we give you a factualanalysis of the drastic fall in the cutoffs for this year. akea look.

     AN ANALYSIS OF HE SIUAION Prima facie, it may seem that our institution is largely atfault because we never publicize our placements and thenoteworthy achievements of the many luminaries fromour college, but that is not really the case. On comparingthe final round cutoffs with an institution like DU, whichis well known all over our country and is on top of the listfor engineering aspirants as it gives a very transparent pic-ture of its placements, we noticed that they too have seenan equal slump in cutoffs this year.

    NI, WARANGAL, a premier engineering college, has alsowitnessed something similar, though not of the same mag-nitude. Almost every regional engineering college has seenthis dip, so the situation isn’t just NSI specific anymore.So, while it is true that the fact that we don’t advertiseenough, costs us some really good potential every year, yetit is not the primary reason behind this fall. Tere is obvi-ously more to the picture.

     All NIs have to comply with the ground rules of CBSE andthus have had to admit their students on the basis of theJEE’13 formula, the brain child of former HRD minister,Mr. Kapil Sibal.

    Tis is a breakdown of the JEE’13 Mains formula :60% weightage is given to marks scored in JEE’13 Mainsexamination and 40% weightage is given to marks ob-tained in Board examinations of c lass 12th.Te percentilesobtained are thus calculated in both the exams.Te per-centiles are then multiplied by a factor of 0.6, and 0.4 re-spectively. Te All India Rank is evaluated on the net score.It is safe to say that this new formula has completelyturned the entire foundation for admitting students allover india in undergraduate engineering colleges upsidedown.

    Tere are some grave shortcomings of this formula whichinherently have had a domino effect on the JEE outcomethis year:

    • Firstly, the new formula has created a lot of confu-sion and ambiguity in the minds of engineering aspir-ants. Tere is no certainty now as to which methodwill secure them a seat in the college of their choice.Te dichotomy of juggling between CBSE and JEE canrender anyone exhausted and mentally drained out.

    • Giving so much weightage to board results, may be abreather to some, but only the experienced know howcredible board results really are. Te gospel truth isthat board results never really give an accurate imageof a person’s knowledge and aptitude in a particularsubject. Luck has a large role to play in it too. Where-as, entrance examinations, though not without loop-holes, are more objective and analytical.

    • Yet the biggest drawback of this formula is actu-ally the lack of uniformity in the 12th standard re-sult which it hasn’t taken into account. Tere are 34

    boards in our country and each have varying difficultylevels and the relative scoring differs too. So owing toa really faulty normalization formula, it has becomevery difficult to fairly evaluate the results.

    NOW HOW HAS HIS AFFECED OUR CUOFFS?

    When we compare our final cutoffs with that of last year’s,the (average) jump in Outside Delhi region is nearly 18.6%,with a lot of branches showing a rise in the cutoffs too,whereas that of Delhi Region touches 37%. Tis differencecan directly be linked with the disparity in CBSE Board andother state boards. A bar-graph underneath would depictthe irregularities in the cut-offs of both the regions.

    WILL HIS REALLY UNDERMINE OURREPUAION AS A PREMIER ENGINEERING COLLEGE?

    By the careful scrutiny and analysis of the JEE’13 formulawe may have justified the startling fall in the cutoffs butwe cannot ascertain the course of this newly implementedmethod of admission and its outcome on our reputation.

    We must understand that no examination, whether aboard examination or a JEE exam, can ever determine thetrue potential of a student. Sure, they act as a filtering sys-tem and give us a measure of their aptitude. But it isn’tright to judge a person’s intelligence and knowledge froma mere 3 hour examination. Tis is what college teaches us.

    It is a churning process where the brightest may stumbleand the hardworking, diligent underdogs may surprise us.

    So let us take a breather from the eternal debate of

    Will this really undermine our reputationas a premier engineering college?

    Ketan Sharma, Batch of2016:“Te word ‘cut-off’ seems tohave lost its significance inNSI. What went wrong?Whose mistake is it? Is it allbecause of normalization? Idon’t see normalization be-ing responsible for the toprankers of II-Mains (fancyword for AIEEE) choosingsome other college over NSI.

    Choosing a college is a big decision for a student, onethat involves weighing all that you want in a college v/sall that you don’t. Now like any other college, NSI is areflection of those who constitute it. Instead of fussing

    so much over the dwindling cutoffs, we should focus onour contribution in making NSI a better institution andachieving our dreams whilst our four years in this col-lege. In essence, my point is that if you don’t bath for theentire year and put on make-up on new year’s eve, it isn’tgoing to change people’s opinion on how bad you smell.Be the change that you wish to see.”

    Prerna omar, Batch of2015:“Scoring well in the boardsrequires bookish knowledge,limited concepts and appli-cation, subjective writing,and good paper presentation,whereas, the judging parame-

    ters for JEE are (were) speed,accuracy, conceptual knowl-edge of a lot of topics (whichby the way may not be includ-

    ed in the board syllabus), varied application and out ofthe box thinking. Inclusion of the board marks amongthese parameters only increases the number of such stu-dents to qualify who are better meant for rote learningand may not have the right aptitude for engineering asa branch. Tese students, after graduation, may find itdifficult to work in their selected fields, which directlyhits the college’s reputation, leading to dissatisfactionof the recruiters and they may eventually cease to hirealtogether. “

    2014:“With the normalization for-mula devised for allottingJEE ranks to students goinghaywire, the merit decisionshave been exceedingly de-pendent on marks scored inBoard Exams. A major chunkof bright aspirants here hasbeen deprived of the collegesthey deserved. Tis fiasco

    may hamper the reputation of colleges like NSI, whichis more renowned for the quality of students it admitseach year, than its brand name. o get things back ontrack, it may take a few years, some very serious reforms,or even a new government.”

    “ I was quite shocked when I saw how low

    the cut offs for this year were. But thistrend was observed only in the Delhi Re- gion. I think this happened because of twothings: One being increase in intake, otherbeing inclusion of board percentile. Te lat-

    ter I think caused the dispersion in ranksleading to such a huge drop. I personallythink this will lead to lowering of reputa-tion in the industry and will have a hugeimpact on placements. I think the colleges

    should either have their own exams or theranking procedure has to be refined.”

    Terefore, we should not hastily associate this dip with adecline in the reputation of our institute. Let time take itscourse and see how this system works out for us.

    INRODUCIONSomewhere in the lone corners of NSI, you will always findan ICE student busy coding, sweating hard for a motor sportcompetition, or sometimes, working late night in the CEDlab.

    Te field of Instrumentation and control engineering (ICE)

    is ubiquitous in so many respects. Often underrated, ICE isa hybrid branch – it is an amalgamation of Electronics, Com-puters, Mechanical, and Automation engineering.

    However, does studying ICE really make you a jack-of-all-trades or only a master in one of the myriad fields available?Let us find it out.

    What is ICE?Unfortunately, the skewed and flummoxing system of ranks,preferences, and parents (pun intended!) force us to makesome uninformed choices in our teenage. In fact, at NSI,it is not we who choose the branch but it is the branch thatchooses us.

    Sometimes, a few students in their first year do not have aclear-cut idea of what their branch [Instrumentation and

    Control Engineering here] is all about.

    Instrumentation is the science of measurement of physi-cal quantities. In layman’s terms, anything around us thatuses any measuring device does involve some degree of in-strumentation in it. Hence, from home appliances like AirConditioners and refrigerators to transducers, sensors, ac-tuators, meters (flow, level, and pressure), pressure gauges,and control valves used in Industry, the varied applicationsof Instrumentation are palpable.

    Control and Automation engineering deals with all the pro-cesses and machines that are programmed to function fullyor semi-automatically. It provides desired behavior and con-trol to the machines, and thus, it finds wide applications inmultiple disciplines (i.e. from automation to defense indus-try).

    Using them together - the beverage IndustryLet us take an example ofa beverage bottling plant.Te Control and Automa-tion technology is involvedin various processes likemoving bottles on a con-veyer belt, filling them oneby one, putting up the la-bels, sealing them etc. Te

    machines are programmed to complete all such processes.

    On the other hand, Instrumentation and measurement de-vices are used to maintain a certain pressure, temperature,and volume while filling the bottles.

    Further prospects - Academia

    Since the ICE curriculum consists of an amalgamation ofcourses from Electrical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, Con-trol, Electronics, Communication, and Computer engineer-ing, it allows a student to have a wide variety of options forpost-graduate specializations. For students looking to gointo academia but unsure about their subsequent specializa-tion, ICE is a good branch to be in, since it allows them tosearch for their true field of interest by working on projectson a diverse variety of subjects. Many of our alumni, whenasked about the scope for ICE in further studies, respond-ed by saying that during their undergraduate studies, theyworked on various research projects under professors, andthis was when they came to realize what their true passionwas. Te ideal path for a potential post-graduate studentwould be to work on as many research projects as possible,to get a good understanding of the field he/she hopes to doresearch in, and, once sure of the field, look up the relevant

    courses at top universities, both in India as well as abroad.

     Although ICE as a branch (and therefore its associated corefields) is not very popular in India, many top class institutesstill provide graduate-level courses & research opportunities.IISc Bangalore and a number of old IIs have research andpost-graduation programs available. Te situation abroad isslightly better, as most foreign universities do not focus onthe undergraduate major while considering research applica-

    tions from engineers. Tis provides a much wider scope forstudents to select their specialization. In some rare cases,you [undergraduate students] can also choose an unrelatedbranch to pursue in their masters provided you can showyour interest in that specific field through projects, intern-ships, achievements etc. Tere are alumni who chose eco-nomics, environmental sciences, marketing, finance etc. astheir field of interest during masters.

    If someone wishes to pursue his/her masters in core Instru-mentation and control Engineering, then one may chooseElectrical or Mechanical Engineering in which they can spe-cialize/major in Control systems, Sensors, Automation &Control, Robotics, Mechatronics, Control Drives, ArtificialIntelligence, Process Control, Machine Learning, IntelligentControl etc. after which one can work in industry or pursuePhD. In PhD, one can again further specialize in their field ofinterest in which they wish to pursue their research. If some-one is focused and pre-decided in pursuing PhD further inlife, then one can also apply for MS + PhD courses abroad if

    he/she has a strong profile.

     After post-graduation, a student can choose whether to gointo the industry for jobs, or choose to stick with academicresearch. Major companies look to hire PhDs for positionsas research scientists, Senior Software Engineers, Designersand in other decision-making roles. Lifestyle in the indus-try is usually relaxed and work hours in research labs usuallytend to be up to the employee to adjust. Compensation in ac-ademia is comparatively less, and work hours usually involvemore dedication. However, this is balanced by the freedomon problems to work on, opportunity to work with great col-leagues and students, and (if relevant) interest in teaching.

     Apart from the research areas mentioned earlier, there arealumni who chose little different field like Power Systems,

    Power Electronics, Communication Systems, Material sci-ences, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Auto-mobile Engineering, Systems Engineering, Nanotechnology,Photonics(Optics), Aerospace, Bio-instrumentation and sur-gical robotics, applied mathematics, data analytics, and pre-cision motion control. Tus, it is easy to see that a wide vari-ety of fields await an Instrumentation and Control engineer.ICE provides one with ample opportunities to pursue his/her masters in any field of Computers, Electronics, Electri-cal, Mechanical, Control, and Automation. Tis helps openup a multitude of prospects for a student to choose his/herfield of interest after exploring these areas properly duringundergraduate studies.

    Further Prospects – IndustryOwing to the large scope and span of the subject, core [ICE]companies visiting the campus are limited. However, there

    are a plethora of companies searching for a mix of Automa-tion, Computers, Electronics, Control, and Instrumenta-tion engineers. In Instrumentation and Control domain,engineers are required in Oil & Gas sector, Power & Energysector, Automobile and Manufacturing sector and any other

    process based industries like pharmaceutical, cement, ferti-lizer, chemical industry etc.

    Public sector : Jobs at PSUs like GAIL, IOCL, HPCL, BPCL,ONGC, NPC, BHEL, DMRC, SAIL, IGL, DRDO etc. areknown to offer enviable perks like generous allowances, softloans, incredible job security, and a handsome salary. PSUs

    have a tendency to overlook your CV by recruiting top De-partmental Rankers and GAE rankers. Tere are also someslightly different areas where Instrumentation and ControlEngineers are required, like in the ISRO, nuclear researchorganizations etc. Many National laboratories that providecalibration and standardization facilities also require engi-neers with Instrumentation profile.

    In upstream oil companies like ONGC, IOCL, or BPCL, anInstrumentation engineer is a key personal in onshore andoffshore drilling, exploration and processing platform andin offshore plants and refineries. One can expect a generous‘hardship allowance’ for working 24X7 for two weeks, andthen get paid to spend two weeks at home, after the gruelingduty on offshore Oil & Gas rigs and platforms.

    Private Sector: Many Indian as well as some multinational

    companies like Bechtel, riune, Reliance Power, Halliburton,Schlumberger, Shell, Honeywell, echnip, Lanco, Metso,Doosan Power, and Rosemount etc. offer some promisingroles to Instrumentation and Control engineers. Tere aremany on field and office based opportunities in Engineering,Procurement and Construction (EPC) companies (like L&),which specialize in infrastructure projects in Power, Oil, Gas,and Energy sector, requiring Instrumentation and ControlEngineers on project basis for their construction projects inIndia and abroad. Tere is a lot of scope in various technicalproject management and consultancy firms like EIL, echnipetc. that work on various engineering projects based on pro-

     ject/client requirements.

    Tere are also many appropriate positions available in auto-mobile, ship and aircraft building, heavy machinery indus-tries. With the real sector booming high again, some new

    opportunities have been created in the construction sector. Also, companies involved in PLC/DCS/SCADA System de-signing like Siemens, ABB etc. have various opportunitiesavailable for these engineers. Lastly, one may also look foropportunities in the Food Processing, Instrument develop-ment, and FMCG industries like IC, Pepsico, HUL, P&G.

    Scope Abroad At EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) firms,depending upon one’s intelligence and performance, com-panies send people for assignments outside India. Variouscompanies have their R&D, designing and fabrication cent-ers worldwide where there is huge scope to learn and nurturefor an Instrumentation and Control Engineer.

    Scope for Instrumentation Engineers is abundant in Gulf

    countries (especially Saudi Arabia and Iraq) where there is anexuberant Oil and Gas industry. Tere is an abundance of oil& gas refineries in Gulf countries and even average engineerscan mint handsome money there. Tere is a huge demandfor Instrumentation and Control engineers in European na-tions. One can shift to such roles either by pursuing theirmasters abroad or by gaining quality work experience for 4-5years, and then shifting to related opportunities.

    I would like to stress upon the importance of a field intern-ship. EPCs do their work from offices, so practical exposureto people is less. So, whenever you get an opportunity, pleasego to a site and observe. Apart from the core subjects, putextra efforts in studying about DCS, PLC, SCADA systems,Control valves, working of different types of power plants,role of instrumentation in power plants and refineries, tech-

    nologies such as HAR, Wireless HAR, Foundation fieldbusetc. Also watch, videos on working of instruments (pressure,level, flow) on Youtube. It will bring some clarity in yourconcepts.

    Microcontrollers, Micro fabrication, IntelligentControl, Micro Sensing, and VLSI are few other fields, whichshould be explored. Robotics, Control Systems, IntelligentControl/systems, PC based measurement, Artificial Intel-ligence, Embedded Systems, Bio-medical Instrumentation,Digital Signal Processing etc. can also be explored.

     Additionally, an Instrumentation and Control Engineershould have proficiency in software like MALAB, LabVIEWetc. National Instruments organizes NI LabVIEW StudentDesign contest every year, which an Instrumentation and

    Control engineer can surely target.

He was the first HODof ICE and has served as the Dean of Student Welfare, Dean Administration, Deanacademic, HOD of COE –I, HOD of Applied Sciences over time. Popularly knownas ‘JRPG sir’, he is always ready to share his vast experience.

    Q. Firstly, we would like to know howyou entered the teaching arena. A.  Earlier I was with the Ministry ofCommunication from the year 1974 toFebruary 1976. However, due to somebureaucratic hurdles I felt suffocated, soI resigned and started teaching. My firstassignment was at Muzzafarpur Instituteof echnology that comes under BiharEngineering College. Ten, I went forPhD at II D. Ultimately, I got the postof professor at NSI (then DI, KashmiriGate).

    Q. You have been here a long timeand have tried to incorporate a lotof changes. What were the changesyou were able to incorporate andwhat more can be improved at NSIaccording to you? A. I was involved in opening the MPAEbranch. I was one of the professors whoplayed a crucial role in opening M.ech.courses in ICE. Earlier ICE was notrecognized by industries, few companies

    were open to ICE, but, I emphasized

    that they should be allowed to competealongside COE and ECE students. ill Iwas HOD, there was no dearth of jobs forICE students.

    I wanted to revise ICE syllabus but I wasposted as HOD of COE-I for 4 years. I nevercame back to ICE as theinstitute head, so thesyllabus revision could nottake place.

    Q. Now that NSI has been granted the statusof a University, theintake of students andthe number of branches

    is likely to increase,

    how do you think it is going to affectthe students as well as the teachers? A.  Te standard declines. However, iftalented people are brought in, the qualitycan persist. Te faculty-student ratioshould be brought up to the mark so that

    the teaching standardsdo not deteriorate. InIndia, good studentsprefer careers otherthan teaching and mostof them prefer to goabroad.

    Q. Please enlightenus about the variousprojects for whichyou have provided

    your guidance to the

    students. A.  I generally prefer inter-disciplinaryprojects like bio-medical. I have guidedseveral Ph.Ds in topics like naturallanguage processing etc.

    Q. ....And the ones you are currentlymentoring? A. Tis year, I have handed over projectsto students regarding inter-planetarycommunication. It requires networking,which is computer and electronics relatedand sensors, which is ICE-related.

    Q. A few words of advice for NSIians... A.  Te very first and foremost duty ofthe students should be to attend classesregularly, they should not bunk classes.Ten, labor hard. Here, students only dosurface reading and do not go into thedepth. ake project work and practicaltraining very seriously as that is ultimatelyyour lifeline. Complete the projects youtake up. Students should expand theirknowledge base; it should not be confined

    to any department.

    Q: Tere is a general perceptionthat placements are a long andardent struggle for people having anaggregate of less than 70%. How wasyour experience of the on-campusplacements? A: I am going to give you the real facts firstand then my opinion.

     All students try to sit for the companiesthat come first, the perception being thatall the best companies visit within the first1-2 months of the placement season. So,to regulate the number of students, thereis a screening process for which 70% is thecut-off barrier. In due course of time aspeople get placed, slots are opened up forpeople with percentages below seventy.Consequently, if percentage is belowseventy, placements may be a rough andprolonged ride but you will probably getplaced if your percentage is above sixty.

    I never studied for the placements and was

    more focused towards going for a Mastersdegree but simultaneously, wanted a job asa safety backup. Te former did not workwell, so I shifted focus to placements.Te first company I broke through wasan A+ company, Sapient Global markets,which had a software profile with financialbackground, and then I got placed in

     Accenture which was an A++ company.I had joined Accenture but in early July,I got a call from Barclays. So, yeah theplacements were a learning experience forme but a harsh one.

    Q: How did this experience affect you?It’s got to be mentally challenging….

     A: Yes, it was because I was one of the lastto be placed in my friend circle and the jobI got in Accenture wasn’t to my liking, butit all worked out well in the end.

    Q: How did Barclays happen? A:  Barclays was, I guess a lucky shot forme. Tere was a mail on the rainingand Placement portal, and the remainingprocess was completely offline.

    Q: Why do you call it a lucky shot? A:  Around 8500 people applied and onlysix people were selected for the profile lastyear and this year it might even be a bitmore.Q: What was the selection procedure

    you had to go through?

     A:  I had to clear a bunch of quantitativeanalysis and verbal aptitude tests. TenI had a telephonic interview with an HRfrom London. After that I was called toPune for a final assessment, where I wasmarked on various skills such as writing,speaking, presentation and analyticalskills, my business knowledge, andeverything really. It was an eight hour longassessment.

    Q: What kind of work does your profileat Barclays entail? A:  Te profile designated to me is thatof an analyst. Within Barclays, we havetechnology, marketing, finance andrisk domains. Barclays recruit people

    in specific domains who are given the

    brand name ‘Future Leaders’ inside thecompany. Ours is a Future LeadershipDevelopment Programme (FLDP). Weare in the technology domain becausewe are engineers. FLDP is an exclusiveprofile given by Barclays in which we willbe working with different teams withinBarclays in the technology domain overthe period of two years. Every six monthsyou have to change the team. Say, thefirst 6 months we have to work with theteam Information security, next six withbusiness analysts, and so on. It is up tous which team we want to select. Finally,after 2 years, we have to permanentlysettle down in one of the teams we haveworked with. Ergo, we get to explore a

    lot within and outside the company, itis a lot of global exposure. It is currentlybased out of Pune and after a year we getan option of being shifted to It’s Londonoffice, depending on the company’srequirements and criteria set.

    Q: What societies were you involved in

    at NSI and how did they aid you? A: I was involved with Te Alliance, whichwas the first society I had joined. It helpedme develop a viewpoint and insight intoa lot of things. I was also a part of theConsulting Club, partially involved withthe Debating Society and the Finance andEconomics Society.

    Q: You have an extensive and diverselist of internship. You have workedas a trainee at Siemens Healthcare,Media analyst at Boond, researchintern at IIID and Centre for CivilSociety. Why did you pursue thesespecific internships? How did they

    help you? A:  Every year my interests kept onchanging. I interned as a Media analystat Boond, it was a small firm, and you geta lot of roles to play within a small firm.I met a lot of people and investors fromdifferent countries, interacted with them,and I was just a second year undergraduateat that time. Ten my interests changedto economics, Game theory and financialmodeling, therefore I picked up a projectunder a teacher at III-D, which was ongame theory. Te Centre for Civil Societyintern was out of my interest in publicpolicy and government decision makingprocess, which also involves a lot of

    decision-making which deals with gametheoretical model. I did a lot of internshipsand they all contributed to my resume andhelped me grow in some way or the other.

    Q: A few words of advice for theNSIians… A: NSI gives you a lot of freedom to study,be it in the technical or non-technicalarena, or something that is totally arcane,unrelated to your life or placements, butif you still want to, go ahead and studyit. Just follow your passions, pursue yourinterests, and something good will findyou. As I have experienced, it all worksout.

    LIFE BELOW 70SHIVANGI SAXENA

    Tere are two types of people in this world.

     ABS: Above 70 And BS: Below 70 (Not an abbreviation forthe other hallowed word ) Tis article is about the latter.

    Te BS lead a colorful life, with diverseemotions. Tey have carried the weightof the world and yet laughed on ‘Bade achelagte hai’  jokes. Tey possess the answersto most philosophical questions- What isthe meaning of life? Why me with a below70%? Who let the dogs out?

     A recap of their college life in thesubsequent paragraphs(Please bear with them; they haveexhausted all other sources to rant)

    First semester: Te BS people are oneswho follow the US V series and haveutopian views about college life. Tey

    spend their entire semester planning,attending and crashing birthday parties,society treats, get-togethers. Tey areblissfully unaware of the demarcation ofthe college’s social fabric.

    Second semester:  Te results stillhaven’t served them the eye-opener to thereal bad world. Te partying continues tillthe end semester*.

    *Applies to you if you are not in I. I+2ndsemester can make the marines shit intheir pants.

    Subsequent Years: Te results have been

    proclaimed. Te gladiators aka ABS peoplehave taken their victory bow. Te BS arestill reeling under the consequences andare probed by the philosophical questions.Te discrimination starts. Your professorwants ABS people for projects. Your hostelwing -mates want to bunk with them. Your girlfriend pines for the boy who is...ahem… ‘intellectual’. Even the Mic-Macwale bhaiya  has an eligibility criterion. You are segregated further when theinternship season is limited to readingthe mails as they clog your mailbox. It isas if the universe conspired against you. And the answer to everything in life is not42, but ABS.

    Placement Preparation:Te above melancholy approach is notreally your style. You know you have toimpress the slick corporate who, like theharbinger of magnanimity, gave you anopportunity to sit for the company despiteyour BS status. Bless that soul!

     Your sales pitch composed of thesequalities and their honest justifications:

    Problem solving skills:  Te BS peoplehave mastered the art of solving problemsof peculiar and diverse nature.

    Exhibit A:Te BS status column aka academic recordwhich sullied the honor of your resumehas been calculatedly shifted at the last to prevent the corporate from finding out yourshameful exploits. 

     Analytical and Mathematical Skills: From times immemorial, a BS person hascalculated and recalculated his percentagementally, using scientific calculator,WEKA (open source data mining tool) tofind a miraculous loophole/miscalculationwhich can propel him into the elite ABSclub. Te analytics involved in calculatingyour next semester percentage and takinginto account variables like potentialboyfriend, your next holiday destination,your motivation levels at that instant, canbe easily classified as real-world analytics.

    Guess-estimation skills:  A BS alwayspredicts his marks correctly to the ‘’. TeMayans were wrong about the impending

    end of the world but the BS would nevercommit such catastrophe. Tis makesthem so valuable for accurate predictionfor companies.

    Exhibit A:(After an exam which resembled a practical joke and taught by a draconian teacher hadended)

     ABS: Yaar, mere toh 40 bhi aa jaye toh mainkhush ho jaunga. Aaj toh pakka fail. BS(strokes beard for two seconds): I think I’ll get 47. *akes into account the impression onteacher, handwriting and unforeseen factorsin a mind numbing calculation

    Result: ABS-> 89 and BS->47Tat’s what I am talking about!

    Exhibit B:(Practical Exam) BS: It was an okay-ish paper. I could solve onequestion. ABS (voice underlined with immense painand suffering): Yaar bahut bekar hua. Kewalek hi hua.

    Result:Same as above. 

     Ability to handle stressful situations:  A BS has his stars aligned in an unfavorableballet. Which means he has dealt withstress with the mind of the soldier withan A5 Grenade Launcher.

    Exhibit A:(Microwave Viva- it is a violation of

    human rights. Te United Nations GenevaConvention recognizes it as an action oftorture and lists it under crimes againsthumanity)

    eacher (merciless Nazi firing questions):What is the use of attenuator? BS: It is used to absorb microwave.eacher: Aur batao?  BS (unperturbed): Baki sab badiya, aapsunao. Owned.

     Ability to handle failure:  A BS greetsfailure like an old friend who visits everynow and then. No whining, no hagglingwith God and no acceptance issues.

    Exhibit A:11:00 BS gets rejected by the professor,foreign internship, free-food treat and missesthe sale on asos.com.11:05 A JD is crucified for the greater good.11:05:01 *indulged in Bhojpuri Dance* 

    eamwork and equality:  Te BScommunity is close-knit. Even a 69 percent-er like me will be greeted with openarms and meted out a treatment similarto others (unlike ABS). Te BS peoplework in teams, be it bundling up peopleto watch ‘Hang Over’ or to make cat-callswhile one of their brethren is giving a

    presentation in class.

    Leadership and Communicationskills: A BS can engineer a mass-bunk onan inconspicuous day. Te convincing andpersuasive powers to sway the opinion of75 people in class and the teacher is theherculean task accomplished by, yourstruly, BS.

    ime Management:  A BS is like thenine-handed goddess. BS indulges inconference call while facebooking   andthinking market strategies for his societywith the analytics for getting into the elite ABS club going on at the back of his mind.

    Dealing with situations sans luck: It is often said that the fortune favorsaudacious. Tis phrase has a slightmodification in the percentage-drivenworld where the lady luck beams at ABS and BS are completely bereft of its

    presence.

    Exhibit A: Before Paper: ABS: Yaar maine XYZ part chua bhi nahi hai BS: Maine ABC part nahi chuaContents of paper:2 mark optional question from XYZ 2 questions of 14 marks each from ABC 

    Flexibility:  Knows, and comfortablewith, all positions. Ahem, Yoga positions. And most importantly,

    JAZBA:  Te innate quality which like alullaby tricks them into a false notion that

    they’ll be all right and that percentagedoesn’t matter.

    Te string of the bass guitar was plucked…once, thrice,and multiple times. Te drums complemented theplucking, and then came the riff. As I drowned myselfinto the music, the lyrics took me into a parallel worldaltogether…“…I am not a perfect personTere’s many things I wish I didn’t do…” 

    I couldn’t help but dive deep into the divine meaningof the lyrics as the band, Hoobastank, performed andgave the audience a trip to utopia, with their music, asthe audience swayed their hands, moving to and froin sync with the rhythm. While vocalist Doug Robb,was impeccable, both at performing and entertainingthe crowd, the drummer and the guitarist weremagnificent. Te sounds were distinct, clear and trulycaptivating.Hoobastank, the creators of the marvel, ‘Te Reason’,was formed in 1994 with singer Doug Robb, guitaristDan Estrin, drummer Chris Hesse, and originalbassist Markku Lappalainen.

    Te band has come a long way since its inception. Ithad first self-released record called ‘Tey Sure Don’t

     Make Basketball Shorts Like Tey Used o’ in the

    1998 with a saxophone player Jeremy Wasser. Tencalled Hoobustunk, the band recorded songs in slightlydifferent genres of funk rock  and  punk. Teir recordmade them popular in Southern California, but, thiswas definitely not what they were settling for.

    With their debut album, the band changed its nameto Hoobastank and created music of the genre of

     Alternative Rock and post-grunge, which was moreacceptable commercially and which was loved by theinternational audiences.

    Teir very first single “Crawling in the dark”,released in November 2001, was a huge hit, both onthe music charts, and business wise. It featured invarious games, Xbox, and even many Play Stationversions. Being an American rock band, it was a big

    feat releasing the very first debut as a hit among the

    audiences. Yet, after their debut single, it seemed thatthe band went on a record breaking spree as followingreleases reached even higher on the music charts inthe subsequent years.

    Teir second song ‘Running Away’ broke the recordsof its preceding song, and it were these two singlesthat made Hoobastank go platinum, with their debut

    album itself.

    Te second album became another massive hit allaround the world, with numbers such as, ‘SameDirection’, which became the main soundtrack ofMADDEN NFL 2005. Te ‘Lost Prophets’ vocalist IanWatkins, also lent his voice along with Jamie Oliver inthe song ‘Out of Control’.

    Te album ‘Every Man for Himself’ included songsof varied types. Especially the number ‘First of Me’captivates the listeners with its very start as thesounds of thunder with the bass and electric six-string sound eclectic and distinct, yet merge togetherin a harmonious symphony. Te song is a uniquecombination of rock and mellow. No wonder, it wasliked commercially as well, and was a frequent number

    on the American Radio.

    Te second album owes its success primarily to itstitle song ‘Te Reason’ that released in December2003, and also featured in various elevision Series,including the popular sit-com ‘Friends’. Since then,Te Reason was heard in every nook and cranny;amongst a group of friends or as a romantic numberliked by partners, and why not? Te lyrics could evenput an old romantic poet to shame.

    “…I found a reason for meo change who I used to be,

     A reason to start over new, And the reason is you…”

     As the lyrics seeped in my mind, realization dawned on

    me. Unconditionally, I was in love with Hoobastank…

    “A father asked his 14 yr old son - Whatdo you want to become in life? He retort-ed back - I want to be a fast bowler anda movie star. His father was startled andtold him that no one has ever done thatbefore, to which his son replied smiling- Until now! Nobody has done yet what ICAN do’...”

    Tought provoking? Yes, but this simpledetermination that we once possessed hastransformed unto unfathomable copycatattitude overpowering all the spirit of be-coming someone different. With age, allthat we ever dreamt for ourselves has allfaded with time. In a more relatable con-text, it is very disheartening to see peoplefollow the mystical belief that if they haveall the points of their idolized college sen-ior’s CV on theirs, they would surely landup in his place in the time to come.

    Here comes the twist.

    Firstly, your life (focussing only on theacademic and professional front) will nev-er follow your senior’s trajectory. Whathe/she might have done and had accom-plished to achieve his/her goal would sure-ly be different from what you want, but itis our inner most desire to simply look atthe result and abide by the trodden path.We idolize a senior, admire him/her, andgo head over heels to even talk to him/her,because she has gotten a fabulous job offerfrom some ‘dream’ company per se. Tereare many other people who might haveachieved things of similar scale, if not thesame dessert, by taking different roads.

    Secondly, situations and scenarios changequickly. Te demands of a company evolveand requirements from an employeetransform. With regards to CV copying,someone has rightly said, “Not one sizefits all.” If one is good enough and thor-ough with the requisite matter from their

    field then he/she would surely get thenod from the numerous companies whichcome for placement or get a letter of ac-ceptance from his/her dream University.

    Tese sought-after seniors might or mightnot have targeted a particular Companyor a University from the very beginning.If one likes coding or consulting or is in-terested in finance, one must have excelledat his/her field, built a strong skill set re-quired for that discipline and sat for therespective companies. imes have indeedchanged so much that we look at it theother way round, from precisely top tobottom. ‘Facebook’ it is, so one must code.One must do ‘this’ project, one needs tocatch hold of ‘this’ professor, one oughtto get ‘this’ internship for sure, so on andso forth. Rather the right approach wouldbe this: You want to do coding, consulting,or marketing, get the right inputs fromthe seniors, and move towards your goal.

    Follow your heart and be inspired by theirideals of hard work, never-giving up spirit,networking and so on, cause i f Mark Zuck-erburg had followed his seniors, I am surewe would still have to log on to Orkut.

    Tis is the real challenge of college - find-ing who you really are - living your life, do-ing things that matter to you and not be-ing afraid of your actions. You may end updoing things that nobody has done beforeyou, things which define and shape yourpersonality, and while you discover your-self, you never know that four years laterwhen you sit for ‘Te’ interview, your stintwith Crescendo/Quiz Club or a meaning-ful project from a random professor fromKerala edges you ahead of the guy sittingnext to you (true story).

    Like the 14 yr old said- “Nobody has yetdone what I can do…”

    What a chaotic month it has been forNSIians. With NSI being one of thecounting centers for 2013 Delhi Elections,scheduled to be held in the first week ofDecember, the entire arrangement to

    host the elections has takenthe college by a whirlwind.

     As the Election Commissionhad taken hold of almost theentire college barring ECEBlock and the admin block,it was impossible to hold theend-semester examinations

    on schedule. o make thingseven more uncertain, the college did keepus in the dark for quite some time makingus anxious by the minute. All we had werehearsays and some pretty ridiculous spec-ulations doing the rounds in absence of an

    official notice. Funnily, their final noticegenerated more ruckus than any of thoseimplausible rumors did. While the fourthyears had to deal with the trauma of giv-ing back to back exams from the 18th to22nd November, the exams for the rest ofthe college have been postponed to 23rdDecember. Yes, 23rd December!

    On one hand, many of us heaved a sigh ofrelief on hearing the news, but for manyof us this meant pinning down all ourholiday plans, which we were so lookingforward to. Internships, projects, holiday-

    ing with friends and family, New Year’scelebrations and everything that makeswinter vacations warm and festive, havebeen marred by the ominous end-semes-ter examinations.

    But we can’t have it all, can we? On thebright side, we now have ample time toprepare for the exams, rectify our weak-nesses, be thorough with all the conceptsand study at a relaxed pace without get-ting worked up. If we meticulously plan

    our preparations, we may even get sometime for celebrations.

    So this may not be such a bad thing. It isall about efficient and smart time-man-agement.

    Te Motorsports Society of NSI,which was primarily formed for com-peting in the all-India competition SAEBAJA, has broken its dormancy thisyear with a recent foray into the finalrounds of two competitions - Te Effi-cycle Competition and the SAE BAJA.

    Te team - that comprises of around twen-ty people in all, has been toiling hard forthe competitions since the last semesterand a half. Te virtual rounds of the com-petitions occurred in June and July. Re-cently, the Effi-cycle Competition had itsfinal round in October. Te Alliance hadan opportunity to get an insight into thepreparations for the same when we hada rendezvous with one of Motorsports’members. Here’s a report.

    EFFICYCLE Virtual Round:Te Virtual Round of the Efficycle Com-petition involved presenting the concep-tual design of the vehicle according to thespecifications provided. Tis demandedextensive knowledge about the design pa-

    rameters involved and their calculations.Te report was presented in front of the

     jury in the departments of Steering andSuspension, ransmission and electrical

    aspects, and the Chassis.

    Final Round:Te preparation for the final round was ex-asperating as it involved quite a significantnumber of hours in the garage. So muchso, that the team members had to workeven till late nights, which got extended toearly mornings as well sometimes!

    Challenges faced:Te competition was high on budget. Tecollege provided no funds, and this wasone of the many obstructions the teamhad to overcome, as the complete manu-facturing cost was around seventy thou-

    sand rupees. Another major challenge wasthe absence of an expert guidance or priorexperience which led to delays as well.

    Lesson learnt:Te vehicle should never be transportedafter assembling it. Te vehicle’s dimen-sions and strength were affected en route

    to the competition venue, which became aserious drawback during the final event.

    SAE BAJA Te SAE BAJA’s final round is due this Feb-ruary, and will take place in Indore. Teteam members, owing to their prior expe-riences from Effi-cycle, are working for thesame full throttle.

     Virtual Round:Te virtual round had a team of four repre-senting the four departments. Te team’scaptain Abhimanyu handled the Chassiswhile the vice-captain, Askari was super-vising engine and transmission, Adhish-

    war was in charge of brakes and marketingwhile Subhadh took care of the suspensionand steering. Te team was tested on theirknowledge of the rule book and the con-

    ceptual design.Current Stage:Te BAJA vehicle’s chassis has been madetwice now, to rectify the imperfections inthe first. Tis has cost the team almostdouble the manufacturing cost.

    Te main event:Te event, to be held in Indore, will go onfor three consecutive days, testing the ve-hicle on various parameters. Te first daywould involve the vehicle subjected tochallenges that pertain to its dimensionsand design. Te vehicle wi ll also have to bemanoeuvred on an ‘8’ shaped track follow-ing which the brakes would be put to test.Te second day would test the vehicle forits durability by making it run on variousrocky terrains and finally the third day willsee a battle of the vehicles of all the teamsthrough a race.

    Te prize money for the winners is aroundRs. 20,00,000 and the motorsports teamis working hard for the same. Te Alliancewished them good luck.
