BiTRONICS M871Single Line, Dual BusModular IED
The BiTRONICS M871 IED provides a completesolution for monitoring and recording in substationapplications. The advanced measuring, recording, and communications characteristics and utility-gradeconstruction make it suitable for applications in ACdistribution and transmission systems.
APPLICATIONS
The BiTRONICS M871, through its multi-mode recording and its ability to make highspeed, high accuracy measurements, provides the information necessary to analyze:
> Network faults
> Reactions of the protective devices
> Dynamic response of the network
> Long-term trends
> Revenue readings at interties
> Substation equipment performance

MEASUREMENTS
The BiTRONICS M871 provides a low-cost entry into disturbance recording through a distributed approach. The M871 can be installed locally on a per-feeder basis. It can also be interconnected via peer-to-peer GOOSEmessaging that allows cross-triggering to occur without the need for hard-wiring of the contacts. It thus provides ascalable approach to station-level recording.
The BiTRONICS M871 complements relays by providing independant, higher-fidelity waveform capture. It has 2 waveform recorders and also provides 2 disturbance recording modes and trend recording not typicallyfound even in the most advanced digital relays.
The BiTRONICS M871 can replace conventional measuring instruments (measurement centers), as well astrend, sequence-of-event, disturbance, and station fault recorders.
The ability to support multiple physical links and protocols simultaneously allows easy integration in retrofitapplications or newer substation automation projects. The M871 serves as a front-end to SCADA while alsoproviding system-wide access to important substation data.

DESIGN
The BiTRONICS M871 uses a modular design basedon the CompactPCI® bus. The modular design allowsthe substation design engineer to specify or alter aconfiguration in order to meet the measurement andcommunication needs of a particular substationapplication. The rugged, aluminum housing isdesigned for mounting to the rear of AC switchboardpanels.
There are three chassis sizes, the standard chassis(8.5”, 216mm wide), the intermediate chassis(11.65", 296mm wide) and the long chassis(13.45”, 342mm wide). The standard chassisaccomodates up to 3 optional modules, theintermediate chassis accommodates up to 5 optionalmodules, while the long chassis accomodates up to 6optional modules.
The BiTRONICS M871 consists of standardcomponents and optional modules.
Standard on the M871 are:
• Wide range universal power supply(20-300Vdc/55-275Vac)
• Signal input module linear to 100A and 600 VAC
• Host/analog processors consisting of a486 Processor, 32-bit DSP, 16-bit A/D converterand extensive RAM and non-volatile memory.
Optional modules include:
• 1A or 5A nominal / 4A or 20A peak signal inputmodule that allows the M871 to achieve0.2% revenue accuracy(IEC 60687, ANSI C12-20-1998)
• 3 different Ethernet choices(10/100 copper, copper plus 10Mb Fiber,copper plus 100Mb Fiber)
• Transducer input module
• Modbus Plus™ module
• Digital I/O modules with either 8 inputs and4 outputs or 16 inputs and 4 outputs.
SOFTWARE
A CD is provided with each M871 order containing theself-installing 70 Series Software. The installationprovides a single front end from which all parts of the70 Series Software can be launched.
