PASTOR’S MESSAGE As we approach the end of our liturgical year which culminates in the great Feast of Christ the King, the readings turn more somber in tone. Malachi 3:19-20 speaks of the Day of the Lord as one of judgment upon God’s people. The Gospel, Luke 21:5-19 deals with the fall of the Temple and what will accompany a future, calamity-laden in end time to come. The end of this Gospel passage reminds us to strive to perse-vere through the struggles that life presents us. Since no one truly knows when the Second Coming of Christ will take place, we are better served by being spiritually ready at all times and persevering in our faith. The second reading from Second Thessalonians 3:7-12 stresses our need to persevere in our life of

faith. Paul may have coined the word “busybody” when he mentions that instead of working quietly while minding one’s own business, some in the early Christian com-munity were more focused on the business of others. Paul reprimands them and refocuses their attention where it should be: on their own individual struggle to serve the Lord. It’s so much easier to see the faults of others and be critical of them than to do the more difficult inner work within ourselves. We think of the scripture pas-sage that reminds us to not focus on the speck in our brother or sister’s eye but in-stead on the glaring beam in our own eye, as another call to self-examination. Paul himself speaks of having to put up with the drudgery of work in order to not have bur-dened the community with supporting himself. He never stopped working as a tan-

ner, a tent builder, throughout his ministry while pouring himself out in service to the Church. Let us pray that we may focus on efforts on our own inner conversion, seeking to persevere in our faith to the very end. - - Fr. Dennis

SAVE THE DATE !!

TREE RIBBONS Trees on the main campus and Vance Jackson property have been marked for identification as part of the tree survey. Our landscape architect, in concert with the civil engineer, will prepare a master tree preservation plan for both properties. Once trees are identified that must be removed for the new road and gym, we will explore all options for relocation or re-placement of those that are affected. Every effort will be made to save and protect existing trees. Additional trees will be added as part of the construction.

ARCHDIOCESE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN For the past year, Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, has been in discussion with his leadership team regarding the prospect of an archdiocesan capital campaign. The archdio-cese contracted with the Steier Group to examine the feasibility and potential support for such an effort. Between May and August, 1,365 clergy, religious and laity provided input through personal interviews, by attending regional Town Hall gatherings, and completing an online or mail survey. The Steier Group presented the planning results and recommendations to Archbishop Gustavo and his senior leadership staff last month. More than 80 percent of respondents indi-cated they were in favor of moving forward with a campaign. These results were shared with the Presbyteral Council, the College of Consultors, and all who participated in the study, and these findings were then published in the Sept. 30 issue of Today’s Catholic. Archbishop Gustavo has prayerfully discerned that the archdiocese needs to move forward with a capital campaign. Information on how this effort will impact our parishes will be provided in the coming months. In the meantime, please keep this campaign in your prayers, asking for wis-dom and guidance for this important endeavor that will make such a difference for our churches and the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

MASS REMEMBRANCES FOR 2017 We began taking requests for 2017 Mass Remembrances on Thursday, October 27 at 8:00 a.m. The policy followed is shown below so that we can accommodate as many of our parish family as possible. Accord-ing to Canon Law, a priest can accept only ONE MASS STIPEND per day. If there are multiple intentions for a particular Mass, the additional stipend is donated to the parish. This is the Mass Remembrance poli-cy for St. Matthew.

Specific Masses will be designated monthly for: Living and deceased members of the parish;

Specific intentions requested by organizations; Special request of all parishioners;

We will accept requests on

Wednesday thru Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you mail your requests for Mass Remembrances, we cannot guarantee the dates you request but will give you the first available. In order to accommodate as many of our parishioners as possible, and to al-low the availability for emergencies we must limit the number of Masses you request to one every other month (or 6 a year) (Maximum 2 of which could be Sunday Masses, only if available.) Thank you for helping us provide an opportunity for all our parishioners to schedule Masses.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With Thanksgiving approaching, we think of the quest of the Puritans who arrived on the Mayflower from their first exile in Leyden, Holland. Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participating in the worship life of the es-tablished church. The Catholics established monasteries, schools, and convents on the conti-nent to assure the vigor of their faith’s intellectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Mary-land in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father’s wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom for wealthy recusant English families, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in 1634. —Rev.
