Welcome to the 2017 British Columbia Northern Exhibition!

We invite everyone to come celebrate British Columbia Northern Exhibition 2017 and

take in all that it has to offer. We have expanded and rebranded to fully realize the significant

role that the event plays in dozens of smaller, hearty communities, towns and villages

throughout Northern BC, in addition to the substantial role it plays within the city of Prince

George. We are including an array of new events to make 2017 better than ever! Such as: 4-H,

live entertainment, vendors, quilt show, and exhibitors. Motor Cross is back once again, the

Carver Kings are returning for a 2nd year, a huge welcome back to the Prince George Rodeo for

its 3rd year in a row, and after a many year absence we are very excited to bring back logger

sports with the Laughing Loggers.

We are once again welcoming back West Coast Amusements Midway to provide

fairgoers with the thrills, shrills, and chills of their numerous rides.

We will endeavor to bring you fun excitement, high energy equine events, farm

animals, art and agriculture, entertainment and of course The Laughing Loggers who will be

here for 3 shows each on Thursday the 17th and Friday the 18th and also Rodeo, on August 19th

and the 20th, and on August 19th, you can get cleaned up and head down to the Stetson Stomp

dance (must be 19+ years) from 9:00pm – 1:00am, (doors open at 8:00pm) cash bar &

concession stand and music by Rick Stavely.

The 4-H clubs of Prince George have been working all year long for the opportunity to

showcase their achievement’s and to host the annual 4-H Auction Saturday August 19th 2017

at 5:00pm at the BCNE. Potential buyers are encouraged to support local agriculture, these

future farmers, growers and producers for a bright future.

Definitions. “Prince George Agricultural & Historical Association or PGAHA”: is the non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that sponsors the annual British Columbia Northern Exhibition or BCNE (formerly the Prince George Exhibition or PGX). “Home Arts & Horticulture or H&H”: Home Arts is a division of the BCNE, as is Horticulture and the two are recognized together as Home Arts & Horticulture or H&H Divisions. Another Division is the 4-H Division, or individual Livestock Divisions such as Draft Horse or Barrel Racing. “Sections” in the Home Arts & Horticulture Divisions: are similar to categories or areas within the overall H&H division i.e. Eggs, Honey, Crochet/Knitting and Creative Writing, etc. Classes in Sections of the H&H Divisions: the areas of competition within each Section. Such as; Section 1: Art. Class #0101: Pencil drawing “Entry or Entry Item”: is the item, article, works i.e. canned jam, cut flowers, picture that is entered into a particular class within a division. “Exhibitor”: is a person entering an Entry Item into a class or classes. “Registration”: An Entry Item is considered “Registered” when the appropriate Entry Form has been completed and the Entry Fee has been paid, to the satisfaction of the PGAHA. “Commercial Exhibitor”: A Commercial Exhibitor meets the following criteria (all). Commercial Entry Items are judged separately from other Entries and are subject to the Entry Fees as outlined in the Entry Fees area of this Prize Book. The BCNE Director/Chair has the final say as to interpretation.

• Operates a business venture where a Business License is held

• Promotes/advertises as a business venture

• Operates a business where the venture is a major source of the Exhibitor’s “living income”

“BCNE Director/Chair”: Are the person or persons appointed and carrying authority to all things referenced within the H&H Division, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Prince George Agricultural & Historical Association. “Post entry” items (items entered past the specified Deadline dates as provided throughout this Prize Book) will NOT be eligible for judging and prize awards, unless approved by the Division Chair. All post entry items taken to Kin III past the Deadline dates for entry may be marked “Exhibit Only”

Rules and Regulations **PLEASE READ CAREFULLY**

1. The deadline for Home Arts & Horticulture entry forms to be registered at the BCNE general office is 4:00pm Friday JULY 28, 2017. LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCPETED UNTIL TUESDAY AUGUST 8TH WITH A LATE ENTRY FEE OF $2.00 PER ENTRY. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER TUESDAY AUGUST 8TH. Important: Do not bring actual Entry Item(s) at this time – only the Entry FORM at this time.

2. The prescribed Entry Fee must, in all cases, be forwarded with the Entry Form. Fees/Entry Form should be sent by cheque or money order, payable to the Prince George Agricultural & Historical Association. Debit and credit card payments are accepted in the BCNE office. Entry forms may be downloaded at www.bcne.ca or are contained within this Prize Book.

• Mail entry forms to BCNE, Box 955, Prince George, BC V2L 4V1.

• SORRY, NO POST DATED CHEQUES ACCEPTED 3. Two entries may be submitted in any one class by the same person unless otherwise

stated in a particular section; Two entries in a class require two entry fees. 4. Spaces for Entry Items are placed in the venue on a first come basis or at the discretion

of the BCNE Director/Chair(s). 5. There are no refunds of Entry Fees 6. Entry Items are shown at the owner’s risk, and the BCNE Directors and/or Staff will not

be responsible for any loss or Damage. Exhibitors requiring fire or other insurance must give the matter their personal attention.

7. Entry Items may be entered “For Exhibit Only”, upon approval of the BCNE Director/Chair. Any such Entry Item will not be entitled to a cash prize and will not be judged, and will only be displayed if the space allows.

8. Judges will not view Entries until all Entries are set up according to the BCNE Director/Chair’s directions.

9. Prize money will be paid on a prorated basis from net earnings if deemed necessary by the Board of Directors of the Prince George Agricultural and Historical Association. Special prizes offered by outside parties will be awarded if and when they are received by the Exhibition. ALL PRIZE MONEY CHEQUES MUST BE CASHED BY OCTOBER 31, 2017. All outstanding cheques at this time will be cancelled and new cheques WILL NOT be issued. All prize money MUST be collected by Tuesday, August 22, 2017 any unclaimed prize money will be considered a donation after this date.

10. Any Entry Item removed before the stated times without permission from the BCNE Director/chair, will forfeit prize money and may be barred from future competition for such a period of time as may be decided by the Board of Directors.

11. Entry Items can start to be removed on Sunday August 20th between 6pm and 8pm and on Monday August 21st, between 10:00am and 2:00 pm.

12. Entries not picked up by Friday, August 25th, 2017 will be donated or disposed of at the discretion of the BCNE.

13. Please check all class numbers carefully. Give an adequate description of the article. Entries placed in incorrect categories cannot be judged. BCNE staff can help you.

14. All entries in competition must be the work of the exhibitor and entered in the name of the exhibitor, otherwise entry item(s) will be disqualified. Eligible entries must NOT have been entered into the BCNE for judging previously.

15. All food Entry Items must be entered on a disposable container and covered in plastic wrap.

16. *Please consider using an inexpensive non disposable plate or dish, which will not be returned; however, it will be recycled or donated to be re-used again.

17. Pictures, photographs must be mounted as specified in the photography section. No Glass or Wood Frames. See the Photography section for further rules and guidelines.

18. There is to be no commercial sales. NOTE: There may be businesses (Vendors) that have paid for space that will be set up (i.e. In the Quilt fair area of Home Arts) and these Vendors may sell from their booked and paid for space(s).

19. All Preschool, Youth and Junior, and Teen entries must have the exhibitor’s age visible for the judge.

20. In the absence of competition in any class or if entries exhibited are of inferior quality; the judges will award only such prizes as they deem the Entry Item merits.

21. Any persons interfering with, or attempting to influence the judges, or who shall, on the Exhibition Grounds, use abusive language as to the award made, shall forfeit his or her right to any prize money to which they would otherwise have been awarded.

22. The Judge’s decision is final. And it is the judge’s decision to remain unnamed, or public. 23. Entries in Home Arts & Horticulture Sections are accepted from individuals,

organizations or businesses; however, in the case of an organization or business, entry forms must include the name of an individual as well as the body that the individual represents. Prize money or prizes/awards/ribbons will be awarded in the name of the individual entering, on behalf of the organization of business that they represent.

24. Admission and Parking: Exhibitors for Home Arts & Horticulture must park in designated areas ONLY when delivering and picking up items to be judged. Direction signs will be posted.

25. There is absolutely no vehicle traffic permitted on the fairgrounds during open or fairgoer hours.

26. Any questions arising that are not provided for in the Rules and Regulations will be at the decision of the H&H Chair.

27. Any and all protests must be made in writing stating the grounds for the protest and accompanied by a deposit of $10.00, which will not be refunded if the protest is deemed frivolous by the Protest Committee. No protest will be entertained regarding the merit of an animal or an Entry Item exhibited as the decision of the Judge or Judges on the point is final. The Protest Committee shall consist of the President, Secretary and one Director.

28. Please check the drop off dates and times for all entries as some categories must be dropped off for judging at different times than other entries.

1. TEEN AND ADULT (15-59 Years) $2.00 2. SENIORS (60 Years+) $1.00

· Seniors are to enter in adult classes. Please indicate senior status (60+) on your entry form at the time of registration to have the $1.00 fee charged and to receive a SENIOR’S tag.

3. PRESCHOOL, JUNIORS AND YOUTH: $1.00 · Youth – ages 11 to 14 years · Junior –ages 6 to 10 years · Preschool ages 2 to 5 · The $1.00 fee applies to Junior and Children’s entries. Please indicate

PRESCHOOL, JUNIOR or YOUTH on your entry form at the time of registration to have the $1.00 fee apply and to receive the appropriate coloured tag.

4. CHALLENGER GROUP: $1.00 · Entrants can be any age, that are physically and/or mentally challenged. · Must reside in a private, group or nursing home setting with 24 hour paid care or

super vision. I.e., Simon Fraser Lodge, · Para Med. OR participate in a recognized Day Centre program, i.e. RADC, PG

Stroke Recovery Club. · PLEASE state name of lodge, care provider or group that entry was completed in

on entry form. · May enter any adult class in the Home Arts & Horticulture Division with a

minimum of assistance from staff or attendant. · Please indicate Challenger Group status on your entry form at the time of

registration to have the $1.00 fee charged and to receive a Challenger Group tag. · Series of photographs showing the Exhibitor preparing the entry encouraged. · All General Rules and Regulations apply.

Prize Money is stated here, unless otherwise stated in a particular Division or Class (i.e. Country Fairs Contests); when a Gift Certificate or Prize Item is awarded for a placing award, it takes the

place of the Prize Money. Prizes are subject to change as we are currently looking into Sponsors for many of the categories.

1. Complete Your Entry Form. a. Please use the Home Arts & Horticulture Entry Form for all Sections and Classes

including special classes, and please use either the Quilting or Photography entry form, as supplied.

b. Ensure that your Entry Items comply with section and class criteria. BCNE office staff can help you.

2. Please bring your completed Entry Form to the BCNE office on or before the closing date: 4:00pm, Friday July 28, 2017. Do not bring your entry item(s) at the time of registration.

3. Late Entries and/or submissions will be accepted with a late fee of $2.00 per entry until Tuesday August 8th at 4pm. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE.

4. Pay the Entry Fee; it must accompany a completed Entry Form for registration to be complete.

a. Regular Entry Fees apply as outlined at Home Arts & Horticulture: Entry Fees, unless otherwise stated in any given Section or Class i.e. Country Fairs Baking classes

5. Get busy growing, making, baking, framing, painting, knitting…. And organizing your Entry Item(s)!

6. Physical directions regarding parking and admittance/where to bring your Entry Item(s) will be supplied to you at the time of the registration. Please drop your items off to the place that is described on the following dates:

a. All Photography & Quilt Entry Items: Tuesday, August 15th, between 10am and 2pm.(photography 10am – 5pm)

b. Non-perishable items (Preserves Incl.): Tuesday August 15th, between 10am-3pm;

c. Perishable items: Wednesday August 16th, between 10am – 3pm. 7. Judging takes place at 6pm. Quilt Judging will start at 3pm. 8. Come to the BCNE from August 17 – 20, 2017 to check out the blue ribbons and special

awards! 9. Thank you for sharing your talent with our community!

10. Please pick up your Entry Items (and any ribbons and prize money!) On Sunday August 20 between 6pm and 8pm or Monday August 21, between 10am and 2pm, using the same parking and admittance directions as when you brought your Entry Item(s) in the first place. Special prizes offered by outside parties will be awarded if and when they are received by the Exhibition.

SECTION GUIDELINES AND JUDGING CRITERIA

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALTHOUGH WE NOW HAVE SPECIFIC CATEGORIES FOR THE YOUNGER

AGES EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO ENTER THE “ADULT” CATEGORIES. PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES FOR

EACH CATEGORY CAREFULLY. THESE GUIDELINES ARE FOR ALL AGE GROUPS.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

• Two entries per class permitted

• Pictures must be presented on a canvas, mat board or other strong structural base,

LIGHT weight frames are permitted. All pieces must have adequate means of support for

hanging

• All pieces must be original work, no prints are permitted. Any Signatures should not be

able to be seen by the judge.

• All entries are original creations made within the past two years.

• No purchased kits permitted

• Each class will be judged within

Creative Writing

• One entry per class permitted

• All entries must be typed, double spaced and include a title page.

• The author’s full name should not be typed on the document, but initials are acceptable. The full name should be written on the exhibit tag instead.

• Age considerations: o Junior and Challenger: Minimum 150 words and maximum of 750 words o Youth: minimum 500 words and maximum of 1000 words o Teen and Adult minimum 1000 and maximum 2000 words o ALL ENTRIES TO BE SUBMITTED FOR JUDGING BY AUGUST 8TH BETWEEEN 10AM

AND 4PM Photography

• This section is sponsored by the Prince George Photographic Society.

• Limit: Only one entry per class is permitted.

• Deadline for Photography Entry Forms to be submitted/registration is Friday July 28th, 2017, 10am-4pm at the BCNE office. Important: DO NOT BRING YOUR ENTRY PHOTO ENTRIES AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION.

• LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL TUESDAY AUGUST 8TH with a $2.00 late fee!

• Please use the special Photography Entry Form included in this book.

• Due to large number of entries, all Photos items are to be brought into Kin ll on Tuesday August 15th 2017, between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

General Entry Rules: Please read carefully A. Eligible photos must be taken within the

previous 12 months. B. Eligible photos must NOT have been entered into the PGX/BCNE for judging previously. C. Exhibitors must be non-professional, except in the Open “People’s Choice” Classes

Definition of Professional: A person who participates in the art of Photography with the Intent to sell or to commission works for profit and/or operates under a business name and/or considers photography more than a hobby. Common sense will prevail here!

D. Each submitted photo requires a title.

E. Mount material should provide a stiff base to support the print and be no thicker than ¼”. You may use mat board or foam core. Submitted photos must be 8x10 inches in size (or no larger than 8x10 if they are in a different format). The mount board can be up to a maximum of 11x14 inches in size. The photo can be glued directly to the surface of the mount board or can be mounted in a commercially available cardboard mat. NO FRAMES ARE ALLOWED.

Complete the entry tag you receive upon registration for each photo that you enter. At the top of the tag, Section is "Photography", Article is the title of your photo, and be sure to include the Class number. At the bottom of the tag, be sure to include your name and exhibitor's number. You should also place your name and address on the top right hand corner of the BACK of each mounted photo.

ATTACH THE ENTRY TAG TO EITHER THE TOP FRONT LEFT OR TOP FRONT RIGHT CORNER OF THE MOUNT BOARDOR MAT.

PHOTO GUIDLEINES AND JUDGING CRITERIA.

Presentation: Finishing touches; style; cropping; application of enhancements. Impact: What you see first; relevance of title; strong feeling of power; holds your eye; story-telling ability. Creativity: Use of imagination; originality; freshness of approach; unusual cropping/use of subject matter; invention, design, feeling and imagination that lifts the work into the realm of art; could be abstract. Style: Part that sets the work apart from others; different approach; real, not contrived; experimental/ individualistic. Composition: Good placement of subject matter/center of interest; successful arrangement; leading lines; harmonious proportions; dynamic symmetry for placement of most important objects; good rhythm in repetition of color, spaces, moods, division of photograph. Color Balance: Use of lighting; good selection of color for subject matter; using very interpretive color (may not be normal); creative use of color (complementary colors, dark against light, strong against weak).

Center of Interest: Focus of subject matter/grouping of subject matter, arrangements of objects. Subjects hold the eye without distraction. Moody, misty, strength and definition give subject interest. Secondary subjects do not over power main subject. Lighting should be controlled or used to enhance or subdue subjects. Technique: Creative use of camera angle, choice of lenses (macro/portrait/infinity), control of lighting (reflected, back, window, color); placement of subject. Print quality: Proper balance of lights and darks for the subject matter; considerations to saturation, reds, greens, blues in proper depiction of true colors of the subject matter or for artistic design. 1. Knitting/Crochet

• Two entries per class permitted

• All doilies must be mounted on a stiff backing, and must be cut to the shape of the doily. No extra space around permitted

• Doll clothes should be displayed on an appropriate sized doll

Judging Criteria Crocheting and Tatting: Design, colours and materials suitable for end purpose: 20% Even tension and accurate pattern throughout: 20% No knots, ends worked in: 20% Edging in proportion to overall size of article: 10% Article is clean and appropriately blocked (or stiffened and blocked where applicable): 10% Item lies flat where applicable: 10% Ruffles, ridges, etc. uniformly shaped and formed: 10% Needlepoint • Two entries per class unless otherwise stated. • All exhibits must be the work of Exhibitor and not have been shown previously at the Exhibition. • All framed handwork must be wired for hanging. • Measurements do not include matting and framing. • Items should be finished, CLEAN and pressed if necessary, and ready to use. • Where appropriate, items should be equipped to be hung. Definitions Petit Point – 20 meshes to the inch or smaller, usually worked with thread Needlepoint – 14 – 18 meshes to the inch, usually worked with wool Gros Point – 8 – 12 meshes to the inch, usually worked with wool. Quick Point – 15 – 7 meshes to the inch, usually worked with wool. Tapestry or Bargello – any design worked on canvas with yarn using basic needle point stitches Crewel – any design worked on fabric with cotton or wool using a variety of stitches

STS01: SILVER TEA SERVICE Criteria: The more classes you enter in Home Arts & Horticulture, the better your chances of being awarded the prize! How it works: Every first-place award in a class (on items entered in Home Arts & Horticulture) receives 6 points, every second-place award receive 4 points and for every third-place award 3 points. The Home Arts Division Chair will calculate your points. CC1953: CAINE CUP (Apple Cup): The Caine Cup was donated by the late Martin S. Caine in 1953. The Annual Apple Cup was for the best display of three varieties of apples grown within fifty miles of Prince George. It is presented for a single variety of apples. The cup was awarded until 1960 when it was misplaced until 1987 when it was refurbished and presented. In 2009, the BCNE made a decision to modify the criteria for winning this cup. Regular entry fees apply, one entry per person Criteria: Best apple pie made from local Crab Apples. – Winner must include recipe. 1st Prize: $25.00, name plaque on the cup, Ribbon & invitation to sponsor luncheon held post fair. be submitted into the BC Fairs Members’ Choice Awards program.

The winning entries will be selected by ballot submitted by delegates and guests attending the

2017 BCAAFE Conference, October 19 - 21, in Victoria.

The winning entry in each Member’s Choice category will be awarded a $50.00 cash prize!

Category #1 – Arts & Crafts – Open to all ages

DECORATIVE MASON JAR – (Quart Size)

Decorate a quart size mason jar on the “inside” with the color theme of red and white. The jar must have a lid. Contents are optional.

Create one mug rug using any materials desired.

Theme: Heritage Barns in BC

Create a montage using 3 photos (each 5” x 7”) mounted on a 6” x 8” black backing board and connected using any style of recycled material for display. Photographs cannot be altered beyond standard optimization. Unmounted photographs will not be accepted.

• Applicant must be a resident of British Columbia.

• Scholarships may only be won once by the same applicant, however, non successful applicants may re-apply

• An applicant may apply for a scholarship for two successive years after graduating from grade 12.

• For those scholarship winners unable to enter their program the year they have been awarded the

scholarship, funds will be held in trust by the BC Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions for a

maximum of one year from the time the award was made.

• Scholarship recipient will provide their student number and contact information of the educational institute

where they are enrolled to the BC Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions office before the

scholarship is paid. Payment will be made directly to the institution.

• The BC Association of Agricultural Fairs & Exhibitions will administer the scholarship.

• The scholarship selection committee will be appointed by BC Association of Agricultural Fairs and

Exhibitions.

• The scholarship committee reserves the right to withhold the awarding of any scholarship if, in the opinion
