One: We gather for worship along with all God's people, as the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham and Sarah.

All: We worship the God of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Rachel. One: Today we remember that God delivered the Hebrew people from bondage in Egypt. All: And we pray for the freedom of all who face oppression or live at risk. One: Today we celebrate communion with Christian people around the world to remember Jesus' sacrificial love

for us. All: We receive Christ's generous love and offer it freely to others. One: Please join in our prayer of confession...

*UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Powerful and redemptive God, You desire that your people be free from oppression, and yet over and over again we give ourselves to behaviors, activities, and lifestyles that enslave us. You desire that we trust you to care for us, yet all too often we place our trust in political systems, possessions, and portfolios. Forgive us, keep leading us out of the bondage we have created and give us a new beginning in the promised land—your beloved community of grace. Amen

READING FROM THE PSALTER

Antiphon: Psalm 119:33-40 ANDREW R. GALUSKA

Cantor

One: Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes, and I will observe it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart.

Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. Turn my heart to your decrees, and not to selfish gain.

Turn my eyes from looking at vanities; give me life in your ways. Confirm to your servant your promise, which is for those who fear you.

Turn away the disgrace that I dread, for your ordinances are good. See, I have longed for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life

SYNOPSIS OF THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES

The book of Genesis ends with the story of Joseph, whose wisdom and foresight saved many, including his own family, from starvation. As a powerful and respected man, Joseph was able to ensure that his family had all they needed to thrive and prosper in Egypt. The book of Exodus begins after years had passed, and a new king had come to power—a king who knew nothing of Joseph or his role in Egyptian history, a king who treated the prolific Hebrew people as a threat to national security; a king who implemented a program of ethnic cleansing designed to eliminate the descendants of Abraham and Sarah, and a program of forced labor to weaken them.

This is the historical setting into which Moses was born. Rescued by the daughter of the king, raised as Egyptian royalty, Moses was forced to flee the country after standing up for a fellow Hebrew who was being mistreated. He married and went to work shepherding the flocks of his father-in-law, but God had other plans. God came to Moses in a burning bush and sent him back to Egypt to lead the Hebrew people to a Promised Land.

Unfortunately, the king of Egypt did not get the memo and, anticipating the loss of cheap labor if the Hebrew people were allowed to leave, promptly vetoed Moses’ plan. This set in motion a showdown between God and the king involving a series of plagues inflicting harm on Egypt until the king relented. In today’s reading, God instructs the Hebrew people to get ready to leave Egypt for good. Listen for a word from God….

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES

One: The stories of our ancestors help us understand the meaning of our faith. All: We listen, for their story is our story.

Exodus 12:1-13

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it.

Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn.

This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the Passover of the LORD. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

RESPONSE

One: The story of Passover tells of a new beginning for the Hebrew people. All: We hear echoes of Passover as we celebrate communion together.

DISTRIBUTION MUSIC "Bread of the World" Mark Burrows

Bread of the world in mercy broken, cup of the world in mercy shed, By Him the words of life were spoken, and in His death our sins are dead.

Look on the heart by sorrow broken, look on the tears of sinners shed; And be Your feast for us a token that by Your grace our souls are fed.

Circle of hope, remain unbroken. Love, reach out and spread. Then all the world will share the glory, share in God's blessings, share and be fed.

MISSION: SERVING THE COMMUNITY

MISSION WATCH: HOPE FOR FAMILIES: This week we are highlighting the Hope for Families Center, who provides both emergency short term housing, and longer term transitional housing for families in crisis living in the four surrounding counties. Their goal is to prepare people to live productively and independently through instruction and structured living. This agency provides the tools to empower its residents, helping them identify and resolve their problems, find better jobs and ultimately move into stable living arrangements where they can become contributing members of the community. Your Community Church mission dollars help keep families safe and together.

28TH ANNUAL SAMARITAN CENTER SOUP BOWL: This year The Samaritan Center has partnered with Indian River Clay to create bowls for the 28th Annual Soup Bowl. Soup bowls will be sold at the Heritage Center for their "Empty Bowls, Full Hearts" event on November 5th. Because of the pandemic, there will be no soup donations from our struggling restaurants. As a result, many serving sites have chosen not to participate in the Samaritan Center's single largest fundraiser. CCOVB, however, is rising to the challenge with our famous Lemon Chicken Orzo and Chili con Carne. Quart containers of soup will be available for pick up after church on Sunday, November 1st and from 4:00 to 6:00 on Wednesday, November 4th. Please pre-order your soup at http://ccovbSoupBowl.org by Tuesday, October 27th.

HOW WE CAN HELP: If you have lost your job, been furloughed, or are facing health issues and are in need of support for food, housing, or medical

assistance, Community Church has support for those within our church family. Please contact Rev. David W. Johnson at [email protected].

HOW YOU CAN HELP: Share prayers through our website prayer link at www.ccovb.org or pray for others. Build and strengthen community through regular calls to your friends and neighbors and through your Circles of Care calls. Contribute through donations to the CCOVB general fund, to the Deacons Fund or to the Minister’s Discretionary Fund, to

support the work and outreach of the Church for staff, church members and wider needs in the community. Serve through mission initiatives that are able to carry on their ministry in a safe manner. Contact Rev. David Johnson for more

information. Send letters of encouragement to members and friends of the church to connect with and support one another. And finally, be the eyes and ears, hands and feet of the community, let your ministers know through the Church Office who may

be in need of assistance.
