This week we celebrated the Year 12 Graduation Mass with our College Chaplains. The end of one’s secondary schooling has come to be marked in many different ways. In our Catholic tradition there can be no higher form of celebration, no more significant way to recognise a special event, than to come together in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. It is now time for the Year 12 students to focus on their examinations ahead, remembering that our staff are always available to provide on-going assistance. Our prayers are with our senior students and their families in these final weeks of their secondary schooling. It has been a privilege to see the growth and development of our 2016 Student Leadership Team. They have represented the College with great skill and commitment. We thank and congratulate the following members of this team:

College Captains (John O’Sullivan and Laura Edwards)

Faith and Justice Captain (Alessandra Allan)

Academic Captain (Anna Griffiths)

Arts and Culture Captain (Rhymney Mazza)

Sport Captain (Chelsea Alcaraz) Our Year 10 and 11 students have been involved in the Student Leadership selection process over the past month. We have had many students apply for various positions and the task has been difficult for the staff and students on the selection panels. It is with pleasure that I announce the 2017 Student Leadership Team;

College Captains (Rhymney Mazza and Patrick Bradfield Smith)

Faith and Justice Captain (Jessica Dugdale-Walker)

Academic Captain (Lucinda White)

Arts and Culture Captain (John Griffiths)

Sport Captain (Chelsea Alcaraz – 2 consecutive terms!)

We congratulate these young people on their appointment to these important positions and we wish them well in their roles. Other student leader and House Captain positions will be announced at our final assembly. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the many students who applied for these roles and the staff and Year 9 students who were on the various interview selection panels. I ask all families to be vigilant in relation to the College uniform. We realise some students have grown since Term 1, however our stipulation in relation to the length of the girls’ skirts, is that it touches the knee as a minimum standard. This takes away any ambiguity, awkwardness and unnecessary angst and distraction from our primary purpose of quality teaching and learning. Please ensure that any uniform purchased meets this requirement and is not altered in a way that will breach this standard. The Blazer remains compulsory up to the Cup Break weekend. We wish our Year 8 students and staff all the best as they prepare for their Surf Camp next week.

Bereavements - Yours prayers are asked for the following families who are mourning the passing of a loved one recently. The Cornthwaite family on the passing of Frank McCarthy, grandfather of Mackenzie 8B and Shae 11B, the Fallon family on the passing of Patricia Brien, grandmother of Bridget 10C and the McLoughlin family on the passing of Barbara McLoughlin, grandmother of Angus 7D. Our thoughts are with you all at this sad time.

DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS - Mr Ian Mills I would like to take this opportunity to remind families who were planning to complete their 10 hours of voluntary work, as part of the College Service Scheme, that the end of the year is fast approaching. If you still need to complete your hours to ensure you are reimbursed the full financial contribution, you should either attend one of the scheduled events advertised in this newsletter, or contact the Service Scheme Coordinator, Jenny Baldwin, to organise your involvement. Opportunities for voluntary involvement have been regularly promoted through the College newsletter and sent by email to those who have registered their interest for particular tasks. We thank all families who have been involved in the Service Scheme throughout 2016 for their ongoing support of the College.

I wish our Year 12 students all the best as they start their exams for VCE and VET courses. This, of course, extends to the Year 11s who are studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject. It is fantastic to see so many Year 12s at school during their Swat Vac period to study and access their teachers. We will celebrate the completion of their time at Sacred Heart at our Graduation Dinner on 18 November.

Timetables for the Year 9 – 11 exams will be available soon. Students will be provided with revision activities and study lists as we aim to develop the skills that will enhance their abilities to perform at their best under exam conditions. The Step Up Program will begin after exams for students who will be in Years 11 and 12 in 2017. The aim of this program is to provide students with a head start into their VCE or VCAL courses. Students will be given information about their subjects, as well as some work to do over the holiday period. We hope to be able to begin the 2017 school year with some common understandings, knowledge and skills that are subject specific and get off to a flying start.

SCIENCE SNIPPETS

DIRECTOR OF TRANSITITION AND CURRICULUM - Mrs Joanne Holmes

October Transition News Subjects and Electives 2017 As the timetable blocking becomes finalised students will be contacted where there are issues regarding their preferences/reserves. This will happen over the next few weeks. The timetable program operates to maximise the student choices, however, it is not always possible to accommodate all choices especially if there are single option classes. When this occurs the student will be consulted and a Careers appointment may be arranged. LINCS- Learning, Initiating, Networking and Connecting for Success A select number of Year 8 (Year 9 2017) students will be invited to participate in a program called LINCS - Learning, Initiating, Networking and Connecting for Success. This will replace the student’s LOTE, Culture or Extension English option in 2017. Students who wish to take up the offer, following their invitational letter, will have the opportunity to hear about the program from current 2016 LINCS students and the project they are working towards. VCE Revision Sacred Heart College hosted a VCE Biology revision lecture on Sunday 9 October for the Macedon Ranges area. Brian Stevenson, former CEO of the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) and a former VCAA Chief Examiner in Biology, presented the lecture on Units 3 and 4. Organised by Marika Payne, Science Learning Area Leader, approximately 50 students attended from surrounding schools. This is the sixth year it has been offered and the College recognises Marika’s efforts in providing this opportunity for our rural students. Step up to Careers On Thursday 3 November the College will host our first Year 9 ‘Step up to Careers’ Parent Information Evening. Parents

have been invited, via Care Monkey, to this evening which will be filled with valuable information regarding Year 10, the

Senior Pathways through Sacred Heart College and recruitment and employment.

Ecolinc Unit 2 Chemistry Excursion - Samantha Le Nepveu

On Tuesday 4 October, the Unit 2 Chemistry students went to Ecolinc to complete an assessment task on ‘How substances in water are analysed’. We were able to use some of the equipment that we are studying in class, which is unavailable at Sacred Heart. The first part of the day involved testing a number of water samples that were collected from and around Ecolinc’s facilities including the Werribee River. We tested the water samples for characteristics such as amount of dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity and TDS (total dissolved solids) using high-tech equipment that is unique to Ecolinc. The second part of the day involved using the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) to measure the concentration of sodium ions in the same samples of water. This was done by making standards that were then tested for their absorption to create a calibration curve. Our water samples were then tested but, as the absorption was not in the calibration curve previously made, we had to dilute the samples to get an absorption within the curve’s boundaries.

It was an amazing opportunity to work with some of the specialist equipment that we are studying and we would all like to thank Ecolinc for allowing us the opportunity to use their facilities.

Arts Week 2016 was a huge success. In the Visual Arts area, ‘The Comfortable Cup of Tea’ theme initiated mindful mini paintings stimulated by music by the staff, Photo booth images in hand drawn tea cups and beautiful hand thrown cups by Tony Barnes of Moonshine Pottery. Other events created a lot of interest around the Library with the chalk career path; ‘when I was little I wanted to be …. and now I want to be’, written in English, French and Japanese. There were Vets, Policemen, Doctors, Artists, Teachers and many more career ideas. Adding colour and thought provoking moments to the week the Butterfly board gave students an opportunity to make a note of what they would like to contribute to the world. I would like to thank our Year 10 Art and VCD students for making and presenting all the items for these events. The theme continued into the classrooms with Drawings, Lino Prints and Felt Bunting in Textiles. The theme now continues into Year 8 Art, with the painting of the hand made cups focusing on colour theory and individual ideas relating to students favoured ‘chill out’ moments. Throughout the week our Arts Leaders Meg Walker and Gabi Veal ran the Christmas card workshops, with many of our senior students enjoying time out during their final week of classes. Everyone produced lino cut prints and had a lot of fun. Our Master Class Life Drawing Workshop for Year 11 Studio Arts students welcomed the experience of Philip Cooper from Monash University. For the first time the College provided an advanced level of drawing, giving students an insight into the value of figurative drawing from life outside the standard classroom environment affirming the future of more workshops in the future. In Visual Communication Morgan Williams from Design Scope in Daylesford presented design practice used in the Design Industry to the Year 11 students. Our busy Twilight Open Evening presented the Year 12 final artworks exhibition with the Year 11 students curating and supporting the Year 12 students. Our year 12 students presented a gift to Troy Christmass, the Art Technician, for his continued support for all the unusual and the unexpected requirements artist need to create and display their work throughout the year. In Media the Animation workshop with two preservice teachers was very successful, as they created themes and design and made sets and characters during lunchtimes. Music filled the air around the College. Mr Carrick and his students again excelled in providing entertainment and formal presentations in many spaces generating a wonderful and ‘happening’ atmosphere. The Drama Room was well set up for Twilight Evening. The VCE Unit 4 girls had just completed their final solo exam, so their photos and props were displayed. Ms Bromley and Ms O’Shannessy brought the costume racks, hats and bags of fabric into the room to fold and hang. There were a number of groups who came through with our wonderful tour guides explaining what goes on with drama...it's all a performance really.

COLLEGE NEWS

A highlight of the Twilight Open Evening was the Year 8 MAD Portfolio display in the Mercy Building. The MAD Project is part of Goodness in Our World unit in Religious Education. The students committed to present a project on an issue that they felt most passionate about. There were many issues such as animal cruelty, stopping smoking, environmental issues and human rights. The projects displayed an awareness of serious issues that our students think deeply about. Mary-Anne Thomas MP posted a great article on EmilyClare Cousins who did her project on Ending Child Marriage. Congratulations EmilyClare, and all the Year 8 students on doing such a wonderful job!

RELAY FOR LIFE - Zac Denahy - Year 11 VCAL

On 7 and 8 of October, Team SHC Life Savers participated in the 2016 Kyneton Relay for Life which was held at the Kyneton Showgrounds. Our team included Jacob Murphy, Zac Denahy, Mitch Morham, Chelsie Alcaraz, Pryce Memmolo (team captain), Andrew DeLeonardis, Bradley Nugent, Mrs Payne, Mr Lakey, Mrs Lorkin, Mrs Aldridge and Mrs Baldwin. We arrived at 4:30 to set up our marquee and decorate our area. We then made our way over to the opening to watch the survivors and carers lap to start off the night. We then walked laps up until the 9:00pm candlelight ceremony which was a great tribute to those who have passed away from cancer in our local community, and the survivors of cancer around our area. After the ceremony we walked for the rest of the cold night taking turns to have a sleep through the night and into the morning. In doing this our team raised much needed funds for the fight against cancer and everyone was proud of the effort and dedication SHC Life Savers put into the walk. Thanks to the staff who looked after us and joined in on the walk and also thanks to our sponsors: Subway Kyneton, who provided a platter of rolls and bottled water, and Connally’s Real Estate who gave us a cash donation. While the amount we raised as a team is yet to be finalised, the Kyneton Relay for Life group as a whole raised $40,000 towards this worthy cause. We woud highly recommend everyone to get involved next year.

Year 9 Expo 2016 - Ms Alexandra Smith

On Thursday 13 October, the Year 9 students took part in the very exciting and effort-filled Expo evening. The students set up individual stalls in Quambi and the Arthurson Atrium, in order to showcase projects that they have been working on since February. The purpose of the project is to allow students the opportunity to develop their creative, innovative and interdependent skills to build them into resilient, lifelong learners as they move through to the second phase of their secondary education. Students were required to create a project from one of the following categories: technology and innovation, culture and creativity, social justice, wellbeing and sustainability. The evening was a complete success and the students exceeded our expectations in terms of their presentations, projects and behaviour. The following awards were given to outstanding Year 9 projects:

TOP LOCAL SCOUTS CELEBRATED AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE Ashley Sutton and Max Camilleri-Seeber (Year 12)

Two local Scouts were front and centre at Government House on Saturday 8 October to receive their Queen Scout Award from the Governor of Victoria (the Honourable Linda Dessau represented by Mr Howard). Only a select few Venturers who are members of the scouting movement, aged 14-18, attain this highest award each year. Local Venturer youth members this year are Ashley Sutton 2nd Woodend Scout group and Max Camilleri-Seeber 2nd Woodend Scout Group.

The Queen Scout Award represents hundreds of hours of dedicated development in areas including service to the community, leadership, personal growth and outdoor adventure. Ashley and Max organised and ran a four day 100km canoeing expedition. Ashley has completed over 1000 hours of community service including running activities and building ramps at a special needs retreat. Max has also completed hundreds of hours doing community service. They have both completed courses in Unit Management, Leadership and First Aid and hiked many kilometres.

The Venturers plan their own Queen Scout Program, organise friends and family to participate in activities and community service and exercise exemplary self-discipline to see it through. Ashley said the journey to achieve his Queen Scout Award has been a challenging but rewarding one. Max explains while the work load and commitment of combining school and Venturers was testing at times, and said “I now feel like I can achieve what I set out to do in the future”.

The Commissioner of Victoria, Mr Brendon Watson OAM, reiterated that the Queen Scout award is a marker of future success in life, “It is an extraordinary effort for these already occupied secondary students in their final years at school to achieve their Queen Scout at the same time. We, the entire Victorian Scouting Community are extremely proud of these Venturers’ success in achieving their Queen’s Scout Award and we hope they enjoy every moment of the celebrations.”

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS AT SHC! We have been asking for parents to send us details of their child’s achievements outside of school and we have also been asking the students to ‘dob in a mate’ to let us know of the wonderful things that our students are getting up to after school hours. We have had lots of articles submitted, and are so proud that our students are excelling in all sorts of areas. We will be recognising these over the coming newsletters until the end of the year.

Breeanan Butcher & Bronte Kyle (Year 8) - State Nationals Martial Arts

On 9 October, Breeanan Butcher (8B) competed in the National All Styles Martial Arts State Nationals. As it was her first State Nationals, she was a little nervous – especially walking into the stadium to be confronted by over 250 fellow competitors. Following the opening ceremony it seemed an eternity before being called for the ring for the first time, but then it was ‘game face on’ as she listened to the referee’s instruction. It was time to do what she had trained so hard for. She fought hard and won her first three fights to get through to the final, in which she competed against fellow dojo member, SHC student and close friend, Bronte Kyle (8C). Both girls were happy with the match up, but were not going to take it easy. At the end of the bout (signalled by a sand bag being tossed into the ring), Breeanan was lucky to have won by one point, to give her the title of the National State Point Score Champion, and Bronte Runner Up.

Good luck to both girls for the Australian Nationals!

Alexandra Banner (Year 9) Congratulations to Alexandra Banner who competed at the Catholic Ladies College Equestrian Inter School event on Friday 7 October. She came 7th, 8th and then placed 8th overall out of 15 competitors. Well done Alexandra!

Lachlan Edwards (Year 11) Golden Whistle - Riddell District Football League - Umpires Winner Congratulations to Lachlan Edwards on receiving the Golden Whistle award for 2016. The award was given to Lachlan for always being there for training and the games, encouraging the younger umpires who are just starting out, having a ‘can do’ attitude and showing potential to go further with his umpiring.

Year 10 Archaeology Fieldwork Find Ms Maryann Kennedy

The Year 10 Archaeology class took their second Fieldwork trip on Tuesday 11 October and were treated to an exciting find, courtesy of a generous local family and their excellent historical knowledge of the area. Students were surveying sites that were known to have had buildings dating back to the 1850s and 1860s to assess and evaluate the advisability of more detailed archaeological investigation. They looked at sites in various locations that were known to have housed hotels, a retail establishment, a school, a homestead, a cottage and a quartz battery dating from the gold rush era. A good deal of extremely interesting evidence was discovered at most of the sites, but none more so than the discovery of four old silver coins using a metal detector. The first two were extremely worn, but the next one is an old sixpence clearly dated 1866. Even more exciting was the last coin found which is dated 1819! Joel Blanch, one of the team who made the discovery, poured over the internet that night to identify the coins, similar images of which are seen pictured here. The landowner very kindly offered to allow the College to keep them in our archives and we are pursuing inquiries with Heritage Victoria, Kyneton Museum and local historians to understand more about how they might have landed where they did in, what is now, undulating farmland. Despite blustery weather, it had been a very good day for the Archaeology class, but these finds made it a great day!

Chess Tournament 2016 - Ms Bronwyn Burke

Held across lunchtimes over one week in October the SHC Chess Tournament drew participants from across the year levels. Excellent sportsmanship was demonstrated between players, with a number of very close games played out. At times it was the timer that decided the result with minutes and seconds ticking down more quickly than expected.

Congratulations to all players for their organisation and commitment to play chess competitively in their own time. The final between Regan Kelly and Gianni Di Fazio was a great game, with respect apparent between each of the players. Our winner of the 2016 SHC Chess Tournament was Regan Kelly and our runner-up Gianni Di Fazio.

Student Health Information Ms Jalna Holmes,

Health Centre Coordinator

Administration of Medications at School and on Camps

In most instances, students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health issues and to self-administer unprescribed medications. The College will not supply or administer over-the-counter medications (e.g. Paracetamol, Telfast or Mylanta) to students. An exception may occur during camps, excursions or tours, when a student may require short-term relief from an ailment or injury and a parent, guardian or medical practitioner is not readily available to administer the medication. In such instances, the student's parent/guardian will be contacted and approval sought to administer the medication. The College will only assist in the administration of prescribed medications at the request of a student’s parents/guardian. A parent or guardian must complete a Medical Authority Form which is available from the College website under enrol with us / further links / policies and forms. The First Aid Officers are the only staff members permitted to administer medication on the College premises or to oversee the use of diabetic syringes. Medication Authority Forms need to be completed prior to any overnight camp for any medication administration during the camps duration.

Hayfever season is upon us! Hayfever is an allergic reaction to environmental allergens such as pollens, dust mite, moulds and animal hair. Avoiding allergic triggers is the best way to reduce the frequency of hay fever symptoms. Symptoms of hayfever

sneezing

a runny or stuffy nose

itchy ears, nose and throat

red, itchy or watery eyes

headaches

In some cases, the symptoms of hay fever can be so severe that a person can’t sleep or concentrate, and may feel tired or unwell. Please, if your child has hayfever and requires medication to ease their symptoms while at school ensure they carry their medication on their person or store it in their locked locker.

to achieving educational ambitions. See: www.thinkyourway.edu.au.

2. WHAT IF I DO NOT GET A HIGH ENOUGH ATAR TO GET INTO MY DESIRED COURSE? Many pathways and programs exist to assist you in getting to where you want to go. Suggestions:

Complete a Diploma of Tertiary Studies at Monash University in either Education, Business or Nursing (ATAR 50+) OR a Diploma of Higher Education (ATAR 65+); Indigenous pathways - See: www.study.monash/how-to-apply/indigenous-student-applications

Complete a course at Monash College in Art & Design, Arts (Human Behaviour or Psychology streams), Business or Commerce, Engineering or Science; search Courses on VTAC website

Complete a course at Deakin College in Commerce, Computing, Engineering, Health

Sciences, Management, Media and Communication or Science

Complete a UniLink Diploma at Swinburne (Arts and Communications, Business, Design, Engineering, Health Science, IT, Science)

Complete a Diploma at La Trobe Melbourne in Biosciences, Business, Engineering, Health Sciences, IT or Mass Media Communications

Complete a Tertiary Preparation Course at RMIT in engineering or science

Consider studying a related university course with a lower ATAR; if you do well you MAY be able to transfer to your desired course later on

Start with a VET (TAFE) course in a related field; two years of VET often equals one at university

Complete a Tertiary Studies Diploma at Melbourne Polytechnic (Preston)

Complete a Certificate IV in Liberal Arts – a pathway into a range of degrees. Swinburne and Victoria Uni have this Certificate

Consider a country/rural campus. ATAR’s are often lower, usually due to lower demand; most have accommodation (apply ASAP)

For nursing consider first completing Division 2 at TAFE (or a private provider) - eg. Box Hill, Chisholm, Federation, Goulburn Ovens, Holmesglen, RMIT or Swinburne

ACU has certificate/diploma courses that can lead to degrees (through ACUcom) See: http://www.acu.edu.au/courses/2014/other_courses/vocational_education_training_vet/

Complete a Victoria University Foundations@VU alternative entry to higher education and diploma studies course - a 13 week course designed to build academic skills needed for tertiary study. See: www.vu.edu.au/courses/foundations-at-vu-jyac

Complete a 2-year Associate Degree – Do you want to study at university but are not sure if you will meet the entry requirements for a bachelor’s degree? Several universities offer Associate Degrees (eg Deakin, RMIT).
