  • ON April 15, the Pacific Fishery Management Council decided at its Portland meeting to extend the recreational salmon season, which opened April 3, until Sept. 6. The decision comes as an unpleasant surprise to many California fishermen, some of whom would prefer to see salmon fishing prohibited for at least the rest of the year following the poor return of spawning adults to the Sacramento River last fall. The council, a 14-member group comprised of selected recreational fishermen, commercial fishermen and government biologists, also voted to allow a limited 2010 commercial salmon seasonabout eight days in July.

Some party boat skippers and commercial boat operators have said they disapprove of the decision to allow fishing this year but say they will fish reluctantly by client and customer demand.

If they open the season, we have to go, said Johnny Atkinson, who owns and operates New Rayann, a party boat based in Sausalito. But Id rather see the numbers return in the river. Even if there are 245,000 salmon out there like theyve said, Id rather see every one of those 245,000 salmon spawn.

Ed Zoliniak, an exparty boat captain in Santa Cruz who threw in the towel just a week ago when he sold his vessel, also believes the council should not have reopened the fishing season.

I would have voted for another full closure, he said. There dont appear to be a whole lot of fish out there. Last year they closed it after 66,000 fish spawned. This fall we got 39,000 and they opened the season. I dont understand that.

  • Over the last decade, ayahuasca has become a favorite among the psychedelic community. Also called yage, it is the very same plant that the beat writer William S. Burroughs sought out while corresponding with poet Allen Ginsberg in The Yage Letters.

Since the 1990s, there has been an upswing in the establishment of neoshamanic retreats in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. More and more Westerners are traveling to South America with the intent of undergoing these psychedelic experiences for personal growth and healing.

Long used by natives in the Amazon basin for healing and divination, ayahuascathe active ingredient of which is dimethyltryptamine (DMT)can currently only be used in the United States by members of the Unio do Vegetal (UDV) and Santo Daime churches, both of which have won Supreme Court battles in the last three years.

But a growing body of research is examining the use of ayahuasca and other psychedelic drugs for healing purposes. After decades of social marginalization and governmental suppression, a renaissance is going on in the world of psychedelic research. In 2010, there are as many research projects on mind-altering drugs going on as there were in the late 1960s, before the U.S. government started cracking down on them.

Last week Deborah Quevedo, who has attended more than 50 ceremonies in South America, presented her own graduate-school research on ayahuasca at a conference hosted by the Santa Cruz

based Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), a nonprofit committed to mainstreaming the medical use of psychedelic drugs. Called Psychedelic Science in the 21st Century, the San Jose conference was the biggest international psychedelic science gathering in almost two decades.

Quevedo, who with her husband has worked for decades in the fields of holistic and alternative healing at OConnor Hospital in San Jose, Stanford University Medical Center and UCSF Medical Center, says shed heard reports about ayahuasca being effective in the treatment of addictions.

The Quevedos made their first trip to a Brazilian ayahuasca retreat in 2001 to experience the drug themselves. It was really life-changing for me, she says. I had never had any experience with any mind-altering substances before, so it was all new and very expansive.

I came home from that retreat when I was starting a Ph.D. I basically spent the next six years of my graduate school trying to figure out what had happened to me.

Im really glad people are recognizing what a tool it is for our own evolution, says Narayan. Theres something very feminine about ayahuasca. And thats kind of what the world needs, is more feminine energy.

Weird ScienceThe alternative medicine guru Dr.

Andrew Weil, who began his career in the 1960s as a psychedelic researcher and wrote several popular books on the subject, says people have always

  • used certain drugs to allow them to transcend their human and ego boundaries, to feel greater contact with the supernatural, or with the spiritual, or with the divine, however they phrase it.

Drugs dont have spiritual potential, he says, human beings have spiritual potential. And it may be that we need techniques to move us in that direction, and the use of psychoactive drugs clearly is one path that has helped many people.

Weil was a colleague of Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert at Harvard, where the three men rocked academia with their studies. At that time, LSD was legal, but that changed quickly. After a brief public debate about its potential merits, LSD was outlawed in 1966.

Leary, who had by then become the Psychedelic Messiah, was not surprised by the development.

The effect of consciousness-expanding drugs will be to transform our concepts of human nature, of human potentialities, of existence, Leary said. These possibilities naturally threaten every branch of the establishment. The dangers of external change appear to frighten us less than the peril of internal change. LSD is more frightening than the Bomb!

Leary continued crusading for psychedelics, organizing events like the 1977 psychedelics conference at UCSanta Cruz, the first to be held at a university. Allen Ginsberg, Ken Kesey and LSD pioneer Albert Hofmann attended.

Having learned from the mistakes of the acidheads of that era, todays psychedelic community might be better prepared to deal with some of the most powerful substances on earth, even as they discover further evidence of that power and try to harness it to cure persistent ills.

There are promising studies under way around the world into the use of psilocybin for cancer patients, MDMA (ecstasy) for autism and Aspergers syndrome, ibogaine for addiction and LSD-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of anxiety associated with terminal illness. Still, MAPS and the broader psychedelic community arent out of the woods yet. It took the researchers at MAPS five years of fighting and navigating the bureaucracy of the Drug Enforcement Agency and Food and Drug Administration to get their most recent, and influential, study under way.

Michael Mithoefers 7-1/2-year, $2.2 million trial study into the use

of MDMA in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was the first legal pilot study of its kind in the United States in decades and has been widely hailed by the medical community as a breakthrough in psychedelic research.

Despite the DEA putting up roadblocks at every turn, Mithoefers MAPS-funded research will be expanding this summer into the MDMA treatment of Iraq war veterans PTSD.

  • pissed off my friends. I didnt like myself anymore, but it was easier to keep using heroin.

After he tried 12-step programs and methadone clinics, Hencken heard about ibogaine. While it has a long history of use in African spiritual rituals, there is also a large international underground movement of people using the drug to treat addiction. Desperate, Hencken made the trip down to Mexico City in 2001 to take capsules of the drug with a doctor (ibogaine is currently illegal in the United States).

It wasnt a fun trip, Hencken says. For more than 24 hours he experienced ataxia, rendering him unable to move as the substances psychoactive effects took hold, bringing with it visions from throughout his life. I dont think I had any epiphanies that day, he says, but it did stir up all these things I was suppressing about my childhood that were interrelated as to why I was a drug addict.

Hencken says he has been clean for nine years. Since then he has earned degrees from San Diego State University and is dedicated to spreading the word about alternative drugs.

Getting through something that is so mentally tough, I think gave me some strength, he says. It made me confident that if I could get through that, then I can stay away from using heroin.

Demon DotsIf human beings are set apart by

their ability to design and use tools, then, in a way, psychedelic drugs are a

form of technology. Whether they be synthetically synthesized substances like MDMA or LSD or naturally occurring drugs like psilocybin and mescaline, psychedelics can be viewed as a tool for the brain to be able to tune into diverse states of consciousness.

Considering the extraordinary power of psychedelic drugs, its not shocking that when LSD and other mind-altering substances first appeared in the mainstream in the 1960s, some people were terrified. A mere 50 micrograms of

in a graveyard, Hencken says. Thats a terrible place to go tripping. Youre opening yourself up to a situation where youre going to see dead people, and youre going to freak out. A lot of people choose terrible places to do these drugs for the first time.

Hencken says that the bulk of the bad trips that people experience on psychedelics could be prevented if the drugs were regulated and the users were properly informed about how to conduct a safe trip.

Ideally, MAPS would like to see a situation in the near future where people who are interested in these drugs can get honest information. Where they can get unadulterated, clean, safe drugs, and they can do them with a guide that understands the power of these things. 0

  • This tours set list presents Orchestrion tracks with reworked arrangements of classic material. Metheny looks forward to meeting the orchestrion nuts spread out all over the country that hes been getting emails from. Since the album came out, Ive heard from the other 23 people in the world who are building instruments like this, he says. None of these guys know each other. They dont even know that other people are doing it. So Ive become a sort of clearinghouse for all these wacky people out there who are doing amazing, interesting things.

people talking, theres no question about it. It challenges a lot of people.

In what way? For a lot of people, its really about their fear of technology, or their fear of something breaking, says Metheny. They say, Arent you afraid its gonna break? Well, Im a guitar player. A string could break at any minute, theres nothing to stop it from happening. I have to be prepared for that moment. This is like that too.

Metheny continues. The next question might be, Arent you afraid that youre gonna lose the interaction? Well, you know, couldnt you ask that of anybody who plays a solo concert? Yeah, its just you. Its up to you to make sure its interesting and cool. Or that same person might say, Well, arent you replacing other musicians? Well, when Walt Disney made Bambi, did a Hollywood deer lose a job? No! Its a different form, its a completely different way of doing things.

instruments from one control center. Solenoidsmagnetic coils that trigger pinball flippersstrike each separate instrument, reacting to Methenys guitar pick and where his fingers fret the strings.

Its a match of the 19th century and the 21st century, Metheny laughs. Its sort of like we skipped the 20th century. My experience in the areas of synths and cords and wires and knobsIve grown up with all that stuff. Its not a big deal for me to work with those elements in a musical way. But to have an output system thats acoustic in nature, its fantastic. Its the best of both worlds to me.

A measure of his success is that the recording of this project, Orchestrion, sounds almost exactly like a regular Pat Metheny album. There is no trace of novelty or gimmick in the music; its layered with actual improvisation without being pre-programmed. Whether or not its your thing, Metheny says, it does get

way around a pair of shears. Stretching to the horizon are the Bald Mountain vines planted in 1989 by Ryans father Jim Beauregard, estate viticulturist as well as owner of Santa Cruzs Shoppers Corner market. Dad grows the vines, the son makes the wine. We do really well in business together, the younger Beauregard tells me. We have the same goal: to prosper using Bonny Doon estate grapes.

Now that budbreak has passed, he continues, pointing to the 2-inch growth of chartreuse adorning the tops of the vines, the next thing is for the plants to get fertilized. So prolific are these spectacular fieldsat 85 acres this is the largest planting of wine grapes in the Santa Cruz Mountainsthat estate vines can yield 120 tons per annual harvest. And that means Beauregard grapes find their way into other labels like Soquel Vineyards, Clos la Chance and Martin Alfaro. One day the hilltop will sprout an estate residence, but for now its a

sunny spot overlooking immaculate vines. This would be a great spot for a yurt, Rachel Beauregard beams. So, I ask, whats the plan for Beauregard Vineyards? Well, weve got 17 wines in current release, Beauregard admits with a grin. Were getting more focused now, even though I like to have an eclectic lineup. Like most of the other regional winemakers, Beauregard wants to experiment with the coveted pinot noir these slopes seem to favor. A sparkling wine might be in the future too, if Rachel has her way.

Harvest time, the busiest time, is still a half year away at this picturesque winery. But the verdant land is quietly working its magic.

  • /@73A(March 21April 19): Although obstacles and difficulties frighten ordinary people, wrote French painter Thodore Gricault, they are the necessary food of genius. They cause it to mature, and raise it up . . . All that obstructs the path of genius inspires a state of feverish agitation, upsetting and overturning those obstacles, and producing masterpieces. Id like to make this idea one of your guiding principles, Aries. In order for it to serve you well, however, youll have to believe that there is a sense in which you do have some genius within you. Its not necessarily something that will make you rich, famous, popular, or powerful. For example, you may have a genius at washing dogs or giving thoughtful gifts or doing yoga when youre sad. Whatever your unique brilliance consists of, the challenges just ahead will be highly useful in helping it grow.

B/C@CA(April 20May 20): Yes, I know that the bull is your totem animal. But Im hoping youre willing to expand your repertoire, because its a ripe time for you to take on some of the attitudes of the king of beasts. Consider this. The naturalist and shaman Virginia Carper notes that lions have strong personalities but cooperate well. Theyre powerful as individuals but engage in constructive group dynamics. In many cultures, they have been symbols of nobility, dignity, and spiritual prowess. To adopt the lion as a protective guardian spirit builds ones ability to know and hunt down exactly what one wants. Would you like more courage? Visualize your lion self.

53;7@71=@7A13A(Feb. 19March 20): South Carolina now requires subversive people to register with the state if they have the stated intention of overthrowing the government of the United States. I have no such goal, so I remain free to operate unlicensed in South Carolina. I am, however, participating in a movement to overthrow realityor rather, the sour and crippled mass hallucination that is mistakenly called reality. This crusade requires no guns or political agitation, but is instead waged by the forces of the liberated imagination using words, music, and images to counteract those who paralyze and deaden the imagination. I invite you to join us. Youre entering a phase when you may feel an almost ecstatic longing to free yourself from the delusions that constitute the fake reality.

She Walked!Jean called on an ad in the Santa CruzWeekly. She described what she was lookingfor and we began the search. Jean was veryentertaining and we had a lot of fun looking atproperties- since she was in a low price rangewe saw some wild houses, mildew-y, smelly, fixtures missing, holes in floors, broken win-dows, illogical floor plans, the gamut. Throughit all she maintained her courage and opti-mism. We made several offers that were lostto higher bidders. We made several offers thatwere not accepted. We made offers that sherejected after finding out most of the housewas illegal. We made an offer then found outthe house had been flooded a few monthsago.

Then it happened. The magical placeappeared. Well, the yard was magical, thehouse marginal. Jean fell in love with the set-ting. We proceeded to loan stage. Paperswere flying and signing and personal informa-tion was aired and recorded and pinneddown. It was a bit after that that Jean startedbecoming rather apprehensive. Some mightrefer to it as the common complaint of buyersremorse or cold feet or terrified; whatever itwas. it was serious. Jean started questioningand what if-ing everything. I could see theoriginal enthusiasm ebbing rapidly. Til finallynot a trace remained.

A first time buyer, Jean found the arduousprocess too overwhelming. She blamed theloan rates which took a leap for a few daysand the mortgage payments that would rise alittle bit as an indication of her entire philoso-phy see what can happen, nothing is sure.

She backed out, she walked. She ran. Shedisappeared. I found myself angry and won-dered why. It was not the commission lost, commissions come and go (rapidly Ivefound). It was not the time spent, that hadbeen enjoyable. I thought and thought andrealized that I was angry because she did notdo what I thought she should: buy the house. The rates were still good, the property attrac-tive, the offer accepted, and the reports ok.Everything was fine. But she did not performthe way I thought she should. I could notunderstand her reasoning. I did not agree withher reasoning. But it was hers, not mine. Ineeded to appreciate and understand her allencompassing fear. To try to relate and under-stand it as well as possible.

We all have our fears: of homelessness, ofpoverty, of heights, of bees, of snakes, ofcloseness, of life, of death. To others they maymake no sense, to us they control and wecling for dear life. It is only in reaching way outto walk that milein those other shoestoput aside our prejudices and attitudes, beliefsand opinions that we can possibly, partially, maybe a little, leave behind our old baggageand pick up new suitcase full of better under-standing.

Only one week left to get your maybe notnow but could someday be dream house inescrow and benefit from the $8,000 stimulustax credit!! Good hunting to you all.
