Thunderstone Quarries is based in the heart of the breathtaking Canadian Rockies, just a few minutes away from the world renowned Banff National Park. Thunderstone Quarries Rundle Rock was used extensively in creating the internationally recognized Banff Springs Hotel. Our highly sought after Rundle Rock is a favorite with many architects, builders, landscapers and home owners.

Rundle Rock was named by the stonemasons who quarried it from the base of Mount Rundle in the 19th

century. The stonemasons discovered that this visually attractive stone was easy to work and suited to a wide array of uses. Its smooth surface, variety of thicknesses, distinctive colours and natural durability made Rundle Rock a popular commodity. Rich in character, nature provides Rundle Stone in a variety of distinctive black and brown hues creating a look that cannot be replicated by man-made imitations.

Expertly harvested by Thunderstone Quarries in much the same way as stonemasons did more then 100 years ago, the rock is taken from the mountain and transformed into a variety of forms for use in masonry walls both residential and commercial, fl ooring, fi replaces, pathways, patios, waterfalls, retaining walls and an endless array of landscaping options.

Established in 1960 by George Biggy Sr., Thunderstone Quarries remained a family run business for over 40 years. Today, Thunderstone Quarries is owned by Resman Holdings Ltd. and being operated by a dedicated management team and staff with several years experience in natural stone.

The stone weight is 13 – 15 lbs. per square foot. Sills are 3” Bed x random lengths x 3” +/- split face fronts.

Stone colour is charcoal black with some white and brown as illustrated in pictures. Our Brown Rundle Flag Stone was used as jumpers in some pictures. The Chestnut is predominately brown with a variety of colors - white, black, different shades of brown and a hint of purple sometimes.

Our Natural Thin Stone Veneer helps create solutions to some of the challenges facing architects, builders and designers in today’s construction market. With so much emphasis on build green now a days, our Thin Stone is a green building product, natural, low maintenance and very durable. It also uses approximately 70 – 80% less material then full bed depth masonry on a project thereby conserving on our natural resources and shipping and handling costs.

You can now use Thin Stone Veneer on your projects for a full masonry effect without having to make structural changes to support full bed masonry. Our Thin Stone Veneer can be used indoors and outdoors.

Rundle Rock is a natural stone. Always check with your dealer on actual stone color as variations do occur as stone is produced by Mother Nature.

BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS

Building codes vary from Region to Region. It is the installing contractor’s responsibility to verify local codes and ensure the stone is installed to the approval of the local authority having jurisdiction.

CALCULATING STONE REQUIRED

Measure the length times the height to get square footage of fl ats required. Estimate corner lineal feet by measuring the height of area where corners are required. One lineal foot of corners = approximately ¾ of a square foot of the fl at stone. NOTE: Remember to subtract total square foot area of window and door openings from total square foot coverage.

Example: Height x Length = square foot coverage (minus window & door openings) Lineal feet of corners x .75 = square feet

300 ft x 10 ft = 3000 sq. ft – 500 ft doors & windows = 2500 sq. ft. walls 40 lin. ft corners x .75 = 30 sq. ft 2500 sq. ft. – 30 sq. ft. = 2470 sq. ft. of fl ats

TOTAL REQUIRED = 2470 SQUARE FEET FLATS & 40 LINEAL FEET CORNERS

NOTE: To convert square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.093

Fasteners: Galvanized nails and/or screws

Weather Resistant Vapor Barrier: As required by local building codes

*Rain Barrier:Will provide a secondary plane of moisture resistance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions

Flashing: Corrosion resistant to prevent water from penetrating into exterior envelope as required by local building codes.

Mortar: Type S or N masonry mortar as defi ned in ASTM C270. When mixing and using mortar, it should be fi rm yet moist. If mortar is to dry, it will not be as strong nor provide the proper bonding. The scratch coat must cure for 24 hours.

Additives: Acrylic bonding agents can be added to mortar to increase strength of bond. Follow manufacture’s instructions.

Sealer: If you choose to seal the EXTERIOR stone, use a breathable sealer following manufacture’s instructions. This allows moisture trapped inside to get out, but does not allow new moisture to penetrate in. Do a small test section fi rst in a non-conspicuous area to ensure sealer does not change stone color.

Tools List: Dust mask, safety glasses, ear plugs, trowel, hammer, jointer, level, mortar mixer or hoe and wheelbarrow, soft bristle brush, masonry saw or circular saw with diamond blade, Masonry or stucco hock, staple gun, masonry grout bag, pigment (optional).

PREPARATION

Figure 4

Section 06

Thunderstone Thin Veneer should be a minimum of 4 inches above grade if dirt and 2 inches above concrete, masonry or wood. This ensures proper drainage of wall system as per applicable building codes, and less chance of staining due to contaminates in soil or water.

Lay stone from a few different boxes to create your design, as stones differ slightly in shape and color. Always install corner pieces fi rst, alternating the long and short ends to prevent having a straight vertical line. Then install fl at pieces, working towards the centre of your wall. Ensure that the stone is clean of any dirt, dust or debris from stone before installing. Make sure your starting row of stone is always level.

Once scratch coat has cured, you can trowel mortar directly onto the prepared surface. Work in a small area no larger then 6 -8 square feet so mortar doesn’t harden before stone is installed. Press the stone fi rmly into the mortar.

OR

You can butter the back of each stone with mortar and press fi rmly onto scratch coat. Make sure mortar is ½” to 5/8“ thick to ensure proper bonding and the back of the stone is completely covered to help protect against moisture penetration. The mortar should not be installed if temperatures will drop below 4.5C (40F) as it will not cure properly. The use of antifreeze or accelerator compounds to lower the freezing point of mortar is prohibited (International Building Code, Section 2104.3). Never apply frozen stone to a frozen surface.

Dry-Pack - No exposed mortar joints, stones are laid tightly together. Fill in any exposed areas with a masonry grout bag.

OR

Exposed Mortar Joint – Stones are laid with a ½” exposed joint. Use a masonry grout bag to fi ll in all the joints after stone is laid. As the mortar becomes fi rm, but not dry, tool the joint to the desired depth. (You should be able to press your fi nger into the mortar and leave a slight dent to know when it is ready to tool).

NOTE: You can add colored pigment to the mortar mix to create a different look. Follow the manufacture’s instructions. This is optional.

Excess mortar should only be removed using a soft bristle brush when mortar is still in the crumbly stage, not hardened. If mortar has hardened on stone, wait 48 hours then clean stone with a MILD cleaning solution and soft bristle brush. NEVER USE ACID to clean stone. One manufacturer of cleaning and sealing products is www.fabrikem.com . Check with your local masonry/building supply company to see which manufacture’s product’s they carry. Follow manufactures instructions on proper usage.

Once the stone has been installed, there should be no construction or movement on the opposite side of the walls for approximately 72 hours, as this could cause damage to the setting of the stone.

Flashing is installed (in accordance with the local building code) at penetrations & terminations of stone to help prevent moisture penetration.

Always wear safety glasses, dust mask and ear plugs when cutting stone, and safety glasses at all times, for protection.

Quarries Ltd.INSTALLATION GUIDELINES FOR NATURAL THIN STONE VENEER

INSTALLATION

Section 06

*Cladding systems such as stone are not waterproof and despite their considerable durability, sound building practices require keeping water from penetrating exterior walls. Building paper and house wraps are a well established way of providing protection and most commonly used. They need to be augmented with the combination of air fl ow and water drainage.

This rain barrier provides an un-interrupted drainage path and ventilation for incidental moisture between the exterior fi nish materials and wall sheathing.

Select a product that will provide a secondary plane of moisture resistance to resist inward moisture transport. These products are usually available through masonry or building supply companies. These products must be installed according to the manufacture’s instructions. The rain barrier (drainage mat) is an intermediary layer between the building paper and the metal lath (see fi gures 1 and 3).

There are several different companies that manufacture rain barrier systems. Here are just a few. Check with your local masonry/building supplier to see which manufacturer they carry.

GUIDE TO BUILDING A MORTARLESS RETAINING WALL

Section 09

1st Step – Determining quantity of stone required, based on wall size and thickness.

EXAMPLE: Wall is 50 feet long x 2 feet high x 1 foot thick = 100 cubic feet (cf) Stone weighs approximately 125 pounds per cubic foot 100 cf x 125 lbs/cf = 12,500 lbs divided by 2,000 lbs = 6-1/4 tons stone needed (no waste calculated into formula)

2nd Step – Dig your ditch approximately 6 inches deep and 12 inches wide (must be as wide as widest stone) along the base of your wall location. Fill in with gravel or crushed rock as a base. You don’t need footings, as without mortar, the stones are not bonded together and will expand and contract with the frost. Sort stones by size, using the largest as your base (see picture below) Set stones back approximately 2 inches for every 12 inches of height. Fit stones as tight together as you can fi lling in the spaces with some of the smaller size pieces. Make sure you backfi ll and compact as you go.

Products – Stone, Crushed Stone (or gravel)Tools – Level, Small sledge hammer or heavy hammer, string line, folding ruler, wheelbarrow, shovel, Pick.

NOTE: It’s very important to make sure your base is level as your wall will be crooked as you go up. If using stones 12 inches wide, you shouldn’t exceed 48 inches in height.

CLEANING OF NATURAL STONE

Use a soft bristle brush and water to remove excess mortar from stone before it sets. This is done after mortar becomes fi rm (typically 30 -60 minutes). Loose mortar cleans fairly easy if only set for a short time. You should never leave mortar on stone overnight as it is then extremely diffi cult to remove.

If mortar has been left on to long, try a solution of 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water, using a soft bristle brush. Rinse repeatedly with clear water. Do not let vinegar/water solution dry on the stone as it might leave a fi lm which will be hard to remove. Never use a wire brush on stone as it could scratch or damage it.

Do not use Acid washes as it can be harmful to the Stone. You can also check with a Building supply/Masonry Dealer for a cleaner for Natural Stone to remove mortar, following manufactures guidelines for proper usage. You must let Dealer know what kind of stone as different stones require different cleaners.

SEALING OF NATURAL STONE

Natural Stone is very porous. If stone is being used in an interior application such as countertops, fl ooring, hearths etc. we recommend using a protective sealer. This will help prevent or minimize staining. Check with a Masonry, Tile or Building Hardware supplier for a Natural Stone sealer following manufactures instructions.

If using a sealer on an exterior application, you must make sure it is a BREATHABLE sealer, allowing moisture trapped inside to escape, but not allowing new moisture to penetrate. It must be a Natural Stone sealer. Follow manufactures instructions.

You should allow at least 72 hours curing on new installations before applying sealer. Always test a small area not highly visible for suitability before overall application of sealer.
