Architectural Membranes
The expansion and upgrade of Mumbai’s Domestic and
International Airport terminals. The individual structureswere designed in collaboration with Design Cell Landscape
Architects, Hafeez Contractor Architects, Taiyo Membrane
India and MakMax Australia.
the project
To transform the current hurried passage to and from drop
off point/taxi queue/car park and create an elegant, spacious
gateway befitting India’s financial capital. The design must
also offer visual interest and protection from Mumbai’s
extreme weather.
the brief
Innovative thinking combines a visually intriguing finishreflecting Mumbai’s wealth and sophistication with a
surprising element of practicality. Provision for rain water
collection during Mumbai’s monsoon season was of significant
importance. Regardless of the weather, the creatively
beautiful undulating effects of light and colour welcomed and
farewelled all travellers.
the concept
The architect chose a flexible PVC fabric over a solid material
due to the huge space that needed to be covered. PVC fabric
also provides enhanced design flexibility as well as aesthetic
impact.
the materials
The high-tech tensile membrane design created an impactful
image that reflected a city of extreme elegance, charm
and appreciation for functional creativity. Using a tensile
membrane structure the steel weight for the Departures
Canopy was reduced from 200 tonne to 110 tonne. From
concept to completion, the upgrade won the admiration
of both the Design architects and Mumbai International
Airport authorities plus, it won the 2008 ACASPA Award for
Excellence, Tension Structure category and was declared the
overall winner in the 2008 ACASPA Award for Excellence
(Australia).

A transformation of TK Yala Park, Southern Thailand’s
‘The Knowledge Park’. The Park has provided the localcommunity with a dynamic ‘living’ library and sports activity
area for many years.
the project
To renovate and revamp this centre. The challenge was
to capture the light, energy, philosophy and movement of
the centre in such a way it would integrate centuries of
local culture with the very latest advances in construction
technology.
the brief
The balance between past, future and national identity was
a strong design influence. The choice of fabric/membraneconstruction materials was inspired by Yala mat weaving
which has long been an integral part of the local culture.

project details
Selection criteria involved longevity and non-combustibility,
making PTFE the fabric of choice. We began testing other
materials for the weave panels and settled on Verseidag 18901
PTFE fabric. This had tested exceptionally well in combination
with Sheerfill V PTFE and offered a much higher translucency
resulting in increased illumination.
the materials
Aesthetically pleasing, culturally significant, and here for
the long haul; the completed project successfully combined
the cultural weave of the Yala community with the advanced
technology of new design materials.

project detailsAustralia’s Movie World Theme Park welcomes over 1.3 million
visitors annually with some 7000 people per day in summer. With its growing popularity as a function venue, the seating
capacity of its restaurants would quickly need rethinking.
the project
Design and construct a flexible space with a permanent roof
structure and significantly increase seating capacity. An
additional challenge was that construction had to happen
outside park operating hours.
the brief
Considering the elements involved (huge area, wet weather
protection, aesthetics and financial responsibilities) Alan
Griffith Architects opted for a barrel vault design that wouldsuccessfully integrate interior and exterior. This ticked all
the boxes for maximum design efficiencies and value with a
minimal volume of fabric.
the concept
PVC tensile membrane was chosen for the roof for its
durability, longevity and superior coverage (the surface area
being approx 4000 m²) It also harnesses natural light and by
using less material, delivered a lightweight structure with
maximum visual appeal.
the materials
In keeping with the theme park philosophy, the structure not
only fulfilled the brief (seating capacity was increased 78%
from 330 to 1500), it created an additional attraction. The
sky-high hallway of light beneath a skyline wave can be seen
easily from the nearby busy highway, creating great intrigue
and a promise of another great experience at Movie World.

Textile Façade
To design and construct Xi Model House as a centre that would
accommodate commerce and community in a progressive, dynamic style.
the project
To create a design of great beauty and integrity; a design that
would respect the landscape, culture and philosophy of the
beautiful marine city of Busan as well as honour all future
development. The design challenge would be to incorporate
the logo of Xi Model House in such a way i t would remain as a
proud signature for all to see.
the brief
Flowing lines and curves give the impression of life and
movement while the transparent outer wall utilises naturallight to illuminate the interior and cause the wall i tself to
resonate with the ever-changing light.
the concept
Selection criteria included strength, durability, light weight
and cost effectiveness, making EFTE the perfect choice. The
EFTE walls ‘breathed’ almost imperceptibly, as the panels
filled with air. Its light diffusion effects produce a flood of
natural illumination that ebbed and flowed following the sun’s
movement across the sky. The dramatically crafted walls also
changed colour with the changing lights, while the Xi Model
House logo remained in view day and night!
the materials
Feedback from the public has been outstanding. The
construction is seen as a quality undertaking that is based on
futuristic design, advanced technological materials and is in
keeping with both traditional culture as well as the bustling
cosmopolitan philosophy of Busan itself.

At Australia’s prestigious Melbourne Cup Carnival, sponsors’
marquees also vie for first place! Moët & Chandon wanted tomake sure their tent would eclipse the big race itself!
the project
Moët & Chandon commissioned PTW Architects to create a
VIP ‘birdcage’ tent. It should be light, easy to erect and
dismantle and it should epitomise everything that is loved
about French champagne — especially the bubbles.
the brief
Together with PTW architects we brought imagination to
reality. The larger than life bubbles mimicked the surface
tension of ‘bubbly’ and were light, airy and truly spectacular.
the concept
Finite Element software and the latest patterning techniques
were employed. To compensate for the stretch properties of
Lycra, the material had to be patterned over 12% smaller
than the final shape in order to achieve a totally smooth,
wrinkle-free effect. Fixed to the roof of the marquee and
supported primarily by gravity, the structure’s shape is based
on 31 individual panels sewn together. Installation and
dismantling took less than an hour, the completed structure
weighed less than 38 kg and was transported in a sports bag
to and from the site.
the materials
PTW Architect Chris Bosse has been hailed as the leader of
‘Bubbleism’. His ‘bubbles’ can be found in the Beijing Aquatic
Centre, Stadia China Exhibit and Germany Entry Pavilion.
Described as an ‘avant-garde environment not of this earth’
in the media, the Moët & Chandon marquee went on to win
many awards including the Australian Canvas And Synthetic
Products Association (ACASPA) award for excellence and
IFAI award for excellence under the category of Tradeshow &
Exhibition Stands in 2005.

Lightweight
We have reduced our manufacturing processes by
utilising less steel and other resources. The result is a
much lighter carbon footprint.
Less is moreBecause translucent membranes transmit up to 92% of
daylight, they provide a naturally superior light source
and dramatically reduce the demands on electricity.
Multiply this natural illumination by large areas, such
as sports stadiums, and the ecological and economical
savings are substantial.
Greener and cleaner
Our coating technologies reduce the need for cleaning
chemicals because our self-cleaning fabrics resistdirt, stains and pollutants; a little rain will restore the
surface back to original.
Cleaner air
TiO2 photo catalyst technology reacts with the
atmosphere to absorb nitrogen oxide (NOx) and purify
the air. Our recently developed Kenafine® product
is a biomass membrane material made with fibres
from the herb, Kenaf. This herb is renowned for its
ability to absorb more harmful carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere than any other plant or tree.
Sustainability
Superior insulationand energy efficiency
Translucent membranes transmit up to 92% of daylight
while reflecting the heat associated with traditional
glazing. This provides natural illumination that is
cooler on the hottest days yet warmer in winter. Thecost efficiencies on heating, cooling and lighting are
considerable when compared to traditional methods.
Longevity
Since longevity is the key to reduced manufacturing
processes, all our materials are created to endure the
most extreme elements (rain, wind, snow, sun) from
10 to 30 plus years. The life spans outlast traditional
materials and sustain little or no deterioration of
appearances.
Recyclable
We aim for no-waste, low waste so all our materials,
including steel are recyclable. ETFE is recycled back
into ETFE. Kenafine® is recycled into paper products
such as envelopes and all PVC coated fabrics can be
recycled through Texyloop®.

Kenafine®
Recently developed Kenafine ® is a biomassmembrane material made with fibres from the
African herb, kenaf. This extraordinary plant
has one of the highest rates of carbon dioxide
absorption in the plant world and is a very
effective agent in combating global warming.
Kenafine® is made by weaving kenaf plant fibres
with polyester fibres into a base fabric, which is
then coated with thermoplastic resin. This is a PVC
free product that releases no toxic substances if
burned. The other benefit is this material is 100%
recyclable and can be easily turned into paper
products. Unlike wood pulp, Kenafine® can become
paper without the use of chemicals.
Photoluminescence
We were heavily involved in the creation of
this unique and remarkable membrane. By
adding a photoluminescent pigment the fabric
promises shade and UV protection during
the day and a stunning visual effect at night.
After dark, the membrane glows with stored
daylight, illuminating both interior and exterior.
Research & Development
TiO2
®
Photocatalytic membrane structures which utilise
TiO2 coating technology promise enduring beauty,
translucence and ‘as new’ appearances for
many years. When PVC or PTFE membranes are
coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) photo-catalyst,
they inherit self-cleaning properties that’s farsuperior to conventional membranes. It’s called
the Photocatalytic Decomposition Process, a self-
cleaning action that occurs as the TiO2 causes any
organic matter (stain or pollutant) to decompose
through simple oxidation. The residue does
not adhere to the surface and is washed away
by water or rain. Known as the Photocatalytic
Hydrophilicity Process,
The ‘sheeting’ action of
water across the surface
assures no unsightly
streaking is left behind
due to beading. PTFEand PVC membranes
treated with TiO2 also remove significant volumes
of nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the atmosphere.
In this reaction between TiO2 and the air, both
nitrogen and sulphur oxide from vehicle exhaust
emissions, are decomposed to produce cleaner,
purer air; at a rate of 1.2g (NOx)/1000m²/h.*
* Removal performance is based on thecapability to remove NOx being emitted duringan hour drive at an average speed of 22km/h.Source: Professor Emeritus Akira Fujishima andProfessor Kazuhito Hashimoto, Tokyo University.
