For more than half a century has HOBAS been working according to itscompany motto Make things happen. All began at a dye-works in Basel,Switzerland, where a group of specialists sought an alternative materialfor the deection rollers used in the dying process. Wood had provento be insufcient, as it was sensitive to the applied heat and chemicals, deformed over time and damaged the expensive fabrics. An ideas competi-tion was launched predening the necessary characteristics: light weight topreserve the bearings, a smooth non-absorbing surface and a perfectly con-centric outside diameter for uniform dyeing results, ideally cost effective.

A group of resourceful mechanical engineers at the Swiss dye-worksbuilt a centrifuge and produced a roller made of glassber reinforcedpolyester resin. Although previously composite materials had only beenused in automotive, aircraft and shipbuilding industries, their light weightand resistance to corrosion and chemicals also made them ideal for otherapplications. The innovative centrifugal casting process enabled it to meetthe specications for the smooth and consistent outside diameter, asthe inside diameter of the casting mold was determined in advance. Theperfect distraction roller for dyeing textiles was found.

The Swiss rst manufactured rollers for their own use at the dye works in1957 and patented the production process shortly after. They soon disco-vered that not only the outer surface of the rollers had special propertiesbut also the inner layer displayed unique characteristics. One thing led toanother and the rst centrifugally cast pipe made of glassber reinforcedplastic (GRP) was applied as hydropower penstock in 1961.

To make sure that potable water gets to yousafe and soundly HOBAS CC-GRP WaterLineSystems are widely employed for potable waternetworks. They have been tested and approvedby water authorities in many countries suchas Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic,Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania,Switzerland, Turkey and the USA. Well and lterpipes, spring water shafts and storage tanksin all shapes and sizes as well as manholes forinspection are only a few of the offered ele-ments that complete the water network fromtapping to your home. The products smoothinner surface gives bacteria no chance, reduces-maintenance and disinfection costs, and retainsthe quality of water.

Due to polyester resins that fully encase allcomponents of the composite material, HOBASGRP SewerLine Systems are highly resistantto corrosive substances and therefore idealfor piping municipal wastewater. The productseasily withstand biogenic sulfuric acids thatoften occur in large sewers and pose a threat toother materials. For particularly agressive media,in e.g. industrial applications, we provide youwith a system equipped with high performanceresins or special liner material. It comes as nosuprise that HOBAS CC-GRP Pipe Systems arewidely utilized for sewers as well as bridge, roador tunnel drainage.

HOBAS has been a well-established supplierof pipe systems for the industrial market fordecades. The continued development andenhancement of our product range enables ourproducts to meet even the toughest specica-tions demanded by, for instance, the paper andchemical industry, reneries, desalination plants, etcetera. Complete system solutions are avail-able for e.g. cooling water systems of thermalpower plants or for acid regeneration in steelpickling lines these include static and hydraulic

calculations, material as well as their installation.

With their small roughness coefcient andmirror-like inside surfaces HOBAS CC-GRPHydropower-Line Systems achieve minimalpressure loss and therefore maximal mass ow.Compared to other pipe materials the higherow rate at same diameters results in moreoutput. Since the pipes are often laid in moun-tainous and rough terrain, the durable yet lightHOBAS Pipes tip the scales in the decision-mak-ing process: their easy handling reduce installa-tion time for more cost savings.

    Safe and Soundly Installed

HOBAS Products are used in projects all overthe planet. Uncompromisingly high material andinstallation standards ensure that people and theenvironment are protected. If the potable watersupply or wastewater disposal and HOBASProducts in other applications work reliablyand therefore without being noticed we haveachieved our goal.

But what good would excellent products be ifthey could not be installed just as excellently?HOBAS GRP Pipe Systems are easy to installby various methods and in different media, beit above ground, by open trench, trenchless orsubaqueous.

Excellent resistance to UV light, a variety ofstiffnesses and the small expansion coefcientare some of the reasons why our customersprefer HOBAS CC-GRP Pipe Systems for bridgeand highway drainage as well as other aboveground applications. Whether on suspensions, pillars or any other kind of support, the relativelylight weight of HOBAS Pipes facilitate manualinstallation. Since above ground pipelines arevisible, the coloring of the product is not tobe disregarded: The naturally beige-grey pipesperfectly blend in with many constructions andmay be colored with other shades to match theirenvironment.

HOBAS CC-GRP Pipes are lighter than manyother offered materials on the pipe market andare produced with a standard length of approxi-mately 6 m. This facilitates handling on site sothat even very narrow and deep trenches are nohindrance for a professional and fast installation.Costs are reduced as there is no need for heavyequipment and due to the compact pipe walls.Smaller diameters allow narrower trenches andnally keep excavation work to a minimum. Theleak-tight and easily jointed push-to-t couplingsthat are pre-mounted on one pipe end and thefact that HOBAS CC-GRP Pipes can be length-adjusted with simple equipment directly on siteleads to high installation rates.

HOBAS Pipes provide many cost saving benets to our customers andthe installer, regardless of the applied method; however, several uniqueattributes are ideally and inherently suited to trenchless installation.

When pipelines need to be laid under cities or through other denselypopulated areas, protected natural habitats, or beneath heavily frequentedroads, jacking is often chosen as least disruptive solution. Thanks to centri-fugal casting, HOBAS gravity as well as pressure pipes can be manufac-tured with the requested high compressive strength and wall thicknessesto reliably withstand the forces to which they are subjected in the jackingprocess.

With their smooth, almost non-absorbing exterior surfaces, tight outer-diameter tolerances and the relatively light construction HOBAS JackingPipe Systems have an edge over other materials. Furthermore, long drivesincluding even curves can be achieved, which reduces the number ofintermediate stations and access pits; for example in Warsaw, Poland, where HOBAS De 3000 Jacking Pipes were jacked around a bend in analmost 1 km-long section with one single drive.

When spot repairs on deteriorated pipelines are no longer feasible, autho-rities are confronted with having to decide between rehabilitation andpipe replacement. The latter solution has the disadvantage of being verycostly and disruptive to urban areas where the largest sewer networks arelocated.

Relining is a process whereby the existing pipeline is relined with a newpipe of a smaller diameter to refurbish the original pipe for continuedservice. Being light in weight, corrosion resistant, easily jointed due topush-together joints and rigid to resist grouting forces, HOBAS CC-GRPand NC Line Systems are ideal for this application. A maximal mass owis above all ensured thanks to the smooth inner surface (small roughnesscoefcient) and the relatively light wall structure of HOBAS Pipes.

    Centrifugal Casting

Many of the advantageous properties of HOBASCC-GRP Pipe Systems can be ascribed to theunique centrifugal casting process by HOBAS.Customers specications and the projectsrequirements regarding load and pressurecapacities as well as pipe properties (e.g. chemi-cal resistance) are met by varying the quantity, placement and orientation of the raw materials.Since the process is computer controlled, youcan be sure to receive consistent high quality foreach pipe we design according to your require-ments.

The process is simple to explain: As soon as allbasic components (chopped glass ber, resin andreinforcing materials) are inserted in a rotatingform (mold), the rotation speed of such is raised.Enormous pressure loads from 30 to 70 barpress the materials against the wall of the molduntil they have fully compacted, the resin hasenclosed all other components and no air remainsentrapped. This guarantees a homogeneous pipewall along the full length of the pipe. During thecuring phase, the form continues to rotate assur-ing a perfectly concentric form.

Once the polymerization process is completed, the pipe is extruded. Thanks to the mold everysingle pipe of all available diameters from DN 150to DN 3500 has a consistent outside diameter aswell as smooth outer and inner pipe walls that aretypical for HOBAS CC-GRP Pipes.

The three dimensional chemical bonds of theresin make sure that the thermoset pipe keeps itsstability in environments with elevated tempera-tures. Even unexpected overloads are no problemfor HOBAS CC-GRP Pipes: due to the materialsbuild-up the pipes react with deformation.

    Non-Circular Pipe Production

HOBAS Non-Circular, or NC Pipes, which aremainly used to rehabilitate deteriorated sewersby sliplining, are manufactured on a mandrelof a computerized winding facility. The wind-ing process is conducted according to a deter-mined standard design. This is in turn set by thecustomers and/or projects requirements withregard to e.g. static design and chemical resis-tance specications.

A distinctive feature of the HOBAS NC Pipe Pro-duction is the highly resinous inner pipe layer forwhich also HOBAS Centrifugally Cast Pipes areknown. Once this layer is applied onto a releaselm, the actual winding of the pipe including itsjoint is commenced. Other than by centrifugalcasting, lament winding builds the layers frominside to out and nishes with a sturdy sand-lled protection layer.
