PROCESSIONAL HYMN

‘Lift up your hearts!’ We lift them, Lord, to thee; Here at thy feet none other may we see:‘Lift up your hearts!’ E’en so, with one accord,We lift them up, we lift them to the Lord.

Above the level of the former years,The mire of sin, the slough of guilty fears,The mist of doubt, the blight of love’s decay,O Lord of Light, lift all our hearts today!

Above the swamps of subterfuge and shame,The deeds, the thoughts, that honour may not name,The halting tongue that dares not tell the whole, O Lord of Truth, lift every Christian soul!

Lift every gift that thou thyself hast given;Low lies the best till lifted up to heaven:Low lie the bounding heart, the teeming brain,Till, sent from God, they mount to God again.

Then, as the trumpet-call, in after years,‘Lift up your hearts!’ rings pealing in our ears,Still shall those hearts respond, with full accord,‘We lift them up, we lift them to the Lord!’

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Please sitHabakkuk 1.1-4; 2.1-4

A reading from the Book of Habakkuk.

The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you ‘Violence!’ and you will not save? Why do you make me see wrongdoing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slackand justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous – therefore judgement comes forth perverted.

Page 6: 10 · The Eucharist Welcome to Ely Cathedral this morning. Everyone is very welcome for refreshments after the service near the main door to the Cathedral

6

I will stand at my watch-post, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.

For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HYMN Please stand

3Come, my joy, my love, my heart:Such a joy, as none can move;Such a love, as none can part;Such a heart, as joys in love.

Words: George Herbert 1593-1633Music: The Call CP405 t. ii Ralph Vaughan Williams 1872-1958

1Come, my way, my truth, my life:Such a way, as gives us breath;Such a truth, as ends all strife;Such a life, as killeth death.

2Come, my light, my feast, my strength:Such a light, as shows a feast;Such a feast, as mends in length;Such a strength, as makes his guest.

SECOND READING Please sit2 Timothy 1.1-14

A reading from the second letter to Timothy.

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I am grateful to God – whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did – when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Please stand and face the deacon

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Choir Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. All Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

The greatest among you must become as the youngest, says the Lord, and the leader like one who serves.

All Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Luke 22.26

GOSPEL Luke 17.5-10

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ The Lord replied, ‘If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you. Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, “Come here at once and take your place at the table”? Would you not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink”? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, “We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!” ’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

SERMON Please sit

THE NICENE CREED Please stand

Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Maryand was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The President takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts

Wise and gracious God,you spread a table before us;nourish your people with the word of lifeand the bread of heaven. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Father, we give you thanks and praisethrough your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things;who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour.

By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh;as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin,he lived on earth and went about among us;he opened wide his arms for us on the cross;he put an end to death by dying for us;and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life;so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. And now we give you thanks, because you are the source of light and life;you made us in your imageand called us to new life in him.And so, with choirs of angelsand with all the heavenly host,we proclaim your glory and join their unending song of praise.

The choir sings

Page 13: 10 · The Eucharist Welcome to Ely Cathedral this morning. Everyone is very welcome for refreshments after the service near the main door to the Cathedral

13

Holy, holy, holy,Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.Glory be to Thee, O Lord most High.

Blessed is he that comethin the name of the Lord,Hosanna in the highest.

Please sit or kneel

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and winemay be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supperhe took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying:Drink this, all of you;this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory,we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

Page 14: 10 · The Eucharist Welcome to Ely Cathedral this morning. Everyone is very welcome for refreshments after the service near the main door to the Cathedral

14

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,we bring before you this bread and this cupand we thank you for counting us worthyto stand in your presence and serve you.Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdomall who share this one bread and one cup,so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord;by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

President Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

The President breaks the consecrated bread, saying

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.Though we are many, we are one body,Because we all share in one bread.

THE GIVING OF COMMUNION

The President invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.Blessed are those who are called to his supper.Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

The President and people receive the Communion. Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive the Communion. The practice at the Cathedral is to receive the wafer in the hand; if you are concerned about drinking from the common cup, please take the wafer only – please do not dip your wafer in the cup. The Church believes that the fullness of God’s grace is given when only one of the two elements of Holy Communion is received. Gluten free wafers are available on request. If you do not wish to receive communion, you are invited to come forward for a blessing. Please hold this service book in your hands as an indication to the ministers.

At the distribution the minister says to each communicant

The body of Christ or The blood of Christ

The communicant responds Amen, and then receives.

During Communion the Choir will sing Agnus Dei from Communion Service in G (Francis Jackson) and the motet Give us the wings of faith (Bullock).

LAYING ON OF HANDS AND ANOINTINGThe laying on of hands and anointing is available this morning. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to St Dunstan’s Chapel, in the South Transept during the administration of Communion, where one of the clergy and a member of the Pastoral Team will be available to pray with you.

AGNUS DEIO Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

THE DISMISSAL

President God the Father, by whose glory Christ was raised from the dead,

strengthen you to walk with him in his risen life;and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

RECESSIONAL HYMNDuring the singing of the hymn, the servers, choir and the robed ministers move to the

West. Please turn to face them as we are sent to live out our Christian faith in the world.

The kingdom of God is justice and joy,For Jesus restores what sin would destroy;God’s power and glory in Jesus we know,And here and hereafter the kingdom shall grow.

The kingdom of God is mercy and grace,The captives are freed, the sinners find place,The outcast are welcomed God’s banquet to share,And hope is awakened instead of despair.

The kingdom of God is challenge and choice,Believe the good news, repent and rejoice! His love for us sinners brought Christ to his cross,Our crisis of judgement for gain or for loss.

God’s kingdom is come, the gift and the goal,In Jesus begun, in heaven made whole; The heirs of the kingdom shall answer his call,And all things cry ‘Glory!’ to God all in all.

If you would like to come, please e-mail Emma Jones on [email protected] or call her on 01353 660301, so that we can get the catering right. On 12 October Christine Tweddle and Izaak Martin will talk about their work with adults with special and additional needs. CCLI licence holder number 152256
