NIDARA TIPSALL THINGS CHILDREN

As the parent of a soon-to-be LKG-UKG child, you might be a bit taken aback by the reading goals your school has set for your child. Today's parents are often stunned and surprised when they come to school for new parent orientation and see what's on the agenda when it comes to the reading skills that children need to master. What happened to a full day of fun with crayons and chart paper? What happened to unlimited time in the sand box or running around the trees with other children?

Without any doubt, the reading skills taught in LKG or UKG today look more like the skills taught in first grade a ten or twenty years ago. But please do not worry because these high reading skills mastery expectations for young children are built on by very strategic teaching methods, and a step by step process that build on each other. Your child can meet the reading goals set by their school, especially if they are on track when they first enters LKG or UKG. So, are they on track ?

There are many reading skills that children have to master before they enter LKG or UKG ideally or even during LKG or UKG.

If your child is not steady in all of these areas, don't worry! Every child enters LKG or UKG at a different level and teachers expect a large variation in the skills each child brings. One of the greatest things you can do at home is to train your child with a wholesome system that brings about uniformity in their skills that schools expect and caters to the individual child’s needs. This ensures that the child with advanced skills of reading can be taught in a way that limits their boredom, and more novice readers are taught at pace that minimizes frustration.Written by: Shubha Janardhan, Co-Creator of Nidara.Connect with Shubha: www.fb.com/snj104

So be sure to encourage your child to practice, practice, practice. Keep lots of books around and offer plenty of encouragement. One of the greatest things technology has done these days is to help the provide the child with ample reading options, alphabet games and more that can help the child at their own pace. As a parent look for wholesome systems that encourage your child to become a master at reading.

Giving your child a head start and skill-building in preparation for your child’s first year of formal schooling is important, but it's even more important to foster a love for reading. Whenever you get the time as a parent, play rhyming games, ask them to re-tell a story and help them play word games. One of the greatest ways to engage a young child is to ask them what they want to do in reading. This gives the child the feeling of empowerment in their academic journeys.

Most importantly, keep your child’s developmental stages in mind. They are going through massive stage and their brains are undergoing enormous growth. Stimulate their minds as much as you can. It might seem that today your child is not able to master a certain skill, but left alone, they are able to do it tomorrow!

Remember, children learn from what parents do, not what they say. If a parent loves reading, the child is most likely to adopt that behaviour. A reading schedule could be great for your child. So keep the reading material – whether a book or a tablet ready in your hand and watch your child become an awesome reader!
