I hope you each had a relaxing time over the festive period and managed to spend some quality time with friends and family. In my full school assembly on Monday morning, my primary focus was on the responsibility of each of us to uphold our school aim, our ‘Priory Standard’ – ‘to have the highest expectations of all, from all’. Why? – ‘so that all pupils leave Priory, equipped to contribute positively to society and go on to further education, employment or training’. I reminded pupils that this can be achieved, for all, through our value set of repeated habits: We are ready for excellence We are dressed for excellence We have the right attitude for excellence ‘If we are what we repeatedly do, then excellence is not an act, but a habit’ We will continue to do further work on this in school with our pupils over the course of this half term and look forward to your continued backing as parents and guardians to achieve our shared, collective aim for each of your sons and daughters. You may recall that this time last year, I wrote to you about our renewed focus on behaviour. I am very pleased that the feedback from both pupils and staff remains extremely positive in relation to this, with any low-level disruption in the classroom being robustly challenged in order that the learning of others continues not to be adversely affected. As a direct result of this, we had our latest rewards day this week for pupils who are punctual, take pride in their appearance and come to school day in, day out, trying their very best and working hard. At Priory, this does not go unrewarded. As such, every pupil will still have the opportunity to regularly achieve reward points in recognition of their contribution, effort, achievement and progress. These positive reward points will continue to be consistently and fairly awarded to each pupil’s individual total throughout the remainder of this academic year. Finally, parents and guardians of Year 11. Now is the time to support your sons and daughters in putting school work and revision at the top of your priority list. It is important to help our young people get their lifestyle balance right, so please plan with them at home to ensure the balance between their social time and their academic focus is the right one. Attendance Winning Forms

Dear All

May I take this opportunity to welcome you back following our Christmas and New Year break and to wish you all the very best for a good 2020.

I reminded pupils that this can be achieved, for all, through our value set of repeated habits:

• We are ready for excellence• We are dressed for excellence• We have the right attitude for excellence

‘If we are what we repeatedly do, then excellence is not an act, but a habit’

We will continue to do further work on this in school with our pupils over the course of this half term and look forward to your continued backing as parents and guardians to achieve our shared, collective aim for each of your sons and daughters.

All the very best to all for a positive half term.

We woud like to remind parents of pupils who cycle to school that we expect all pupils to wear a helmet and have a bike that is in a fit and proper condition. This includes working brakes and lights, where necessary.

We also expect cyclists to obey the highway code both on their way to school and their way home.

From Monday we will be conducting regular checks to see that these school rules are being adhered to. If a pupil is found to be not following any of the above rules, the right to bring a bike into school may be withdrawn.

Bikes can be stored in the cycle racks provided, however, the school is not responsible for the security of cycles and a strong lock is essential.

We are sure that you will support us in ensuring that the cycle journey to school is as safe as possible for your child.

Year 11 Revision Skills & Support Workshop

Weds, 22 January 2020This invaluable event, running from 6pm-7pm, focusses on providing students and parents with the essential information, skills and strategies required as we lead up to the final GCSE exams.

We strongly encourage both parents and students to attend the evening as it is always beneficial for school and home to work together to ensure the best possible outcomes for all students.

Reminder letters have been given to Year 11 pupils again this week and reply slips must be returned to pupils' form tutors.

The letters can be also be downloaded from the school website at>> https://www.priory.lancs.sch.uk/parents/letters

At Penwortham Priory Academy the Character & Culture curriculum is designed to support the promotion of excellence for pupils and do all it can to improve their life chances.

Pupils have three 20 minute Character

& Culture lessons each week.

Music At To Your Ears At Break and LunchContinuing on from last term, music will be played through the school's tannoy system during break and lunch. Chosen by Mr Taylor, Lead Teacher for Music, this is designed to offer exposure to, and appreciation of, music, to the wider school.

w/c 6/1/20 - The Music of RussiaBrooding and beautiful in equal measure; ideal for the cold winter months - Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and those more recent rebels, t.A.T.u.

The week was finished off today with the slightly more modern and tenuous...• From Russia with Love - Matt Monro• Back in the USSR - the Beatles• Rasputin - Boney M • Stranger in Moscow - Michael Jackson

w/c 13/1/20 - The 1950s This decade signalled the gradual end of the 1930s/1940s Big Band and the 'Crooner' such as Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. It was the birth of the modern solo pop star thanks to the jukebox and the vinyl single in the American diner.

Much of this music is based on the call and response of slaves working in a line in the cotton fields of the southern states of the USA 100 years earlier and then the Blues. In the 1950's it manifested itself in the question and answer dialogue of the soloist and their backing singers; Bill Haley and the Comets, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers along with famous virtuoso solo artists such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley.

A Trip Down Memory Lane For A Priory GrandmaYear 7 pupil, Amelie, is following in the footsteps of grandma Joan at Priory.

Joan is 72 and attended Priory when it was Penwortham County Secondary School and Amelie is in her first year at Priory Academy.

Joan Frost, as she was then, attended her first trip abroad with the school in 1961, going to Paris, and she has shown Amelie the photographs and wooden plaque she brought back from France during the visit.

“There was only me out of our group who had a camera and it would only take eight photographs at a time, in black and white of course, so they were the ones I showed Amelie,” said Joan.

“It’s funny as Amelie asked if everything was in black and white but we said the grass was still green. I think it’s hard to grasp nowadays!

“What I remember most from the trip is the journey. I remember we met at Preston Station at 8am and got onto a steam train to London Euston. We then got a coach to a little airport, it might have been Lydd, and it was the first time I had flown!

“We got to France and then we got another coach and I remember landing at the college where we were staying at Notre Dame for 10pm.

“We sat down to get some food and they gave us meat. We all waited for the vegetables but we were told we ate that first and got veg separately which was unusual! Then we got coffee in bowls not cups.

“We went all over, we saw the Mona Lisa and to Montmartre and it was the first time abroad for me, it was such an experience. It was really expensive as well. A chocolate bar was six pence in old money in England and it was one and six pence in France, everything was three times the price. I remember walking down the River Seine and we found a department store which was reasonable and I bought a wooden plaque.

“My mum hung it on the wall and I got it when my mum died and showed it to Amelie. It was just a memento.

“I loved it at Priory; my form teacher was Miss Fisher who was also the cookery teacher. I studied Office Skills and I went on to work in offices. I am glad Amelie is there.”

Amelie said: “It’s strange that my grandma came here and looking at her Paris photos, there is no colour!

“I would like to go on trips abroad while I am here. I like art and English.”

Joan left Priory in 1963 and we have continued to run trips to Paris ever since (the next in October this year). However, despite the legend that is Geography teacher, Mr Watters, now beginning his fifth decade at Priory, he was too young to have organised the trip that Joan attended!

Mrs Gidden’s Cool Readers ClubPriory’s Head of English, Mrs Gidden, has been really impressed with many of our multi-talented

pupils and wanted to highlight their love of reading while excelling at other pursuits.

This week we interviewed Year 8 pupil, Paige.

Paige has been busy over the Christmas period as she had the main role in Lostock Hall Drama Group’s production of Aladdin – but she still finds time to read.

Paige is currently reading ‘Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.'

“It’s about three children whose parents have died in a fire when they were young, it’s not the happiest of books! A person is trying to steal their fortune and is following them around whenever they move,” said Paige.

Her favourite author is Daniel Handler, who wrote the Lemony Snicket’s series, but also JK Rowling.

“I have read all the Harry Potter books and watched the films, my favourite is The Philosopher’s Stone.

“I must have read over one million words as, after reading all the Harry Potter books, I have read seven books in the Lemony Snicket’s series and there are 13 altogether.”

At school Paige enjoys art and drama and out of school she pursues her love of drama with the Lostock Hall Drama Group.

“I was shocked and surprised to get the main role of Aladdin in our Christmas pantomime. I had to sing and act.

“I want to study Musical Theatre and be in the West End when I am older.”

Praise For Priory Pupils On Reward TripOn Wednesday, 360 pupils from Years 7-10 enjoyed the privilege of a rewards trip to the Trafford Centre following their outstanding behaviour, attitude and progress in school.

This was the first of three reward trips scheduled for the academic year.

The trip was a great success with pupils having the opportunity to browse the shops, play a game of crazy golf or go to the cinema.

Following the visit, Headteacher Mr Eastham, received this email from the Customer Services Team at the Trafford Centre:

Dear Headteacher

I’d just like to pass on some feedback regarding your school's visit to our centre today. It’s been noted that your students were extremely well behaved and even our security (who do not normally do this) wished to commend your school regarding the good behaviour of all that visited from your school. While we do get school visits quite often it is always nice when a group has been recognised as being brilliant. We do hope you and your students visit us again in the future and have a wonderful day!

On Tuesday, 14 January it’s the turn of the Year 11 rewards trip to the Trafford Centre. We know they are all really looking forward to attending!

Brief details for the day are on the front page of this newsletter and a copy of the letter, for those that qualify to attend, can be collected from Mrs Bullock or the school office.

Enter Holocaust Memorial Competition with Runshaw CollegeTo commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January, Runshaw College has invited students from local high schools to submit entries for their annual Sophie Scholl Awards - see poster on Page 12 with full details. As detailed on the poster, all entries should be forwarded directly to Giles Inman at Runshaw College no later than 4.30pm on Tues, 25 February 2020. When all entries have been received they will contact prize winners via school. As well as the prizes on offer, all winners will be invited to an awards evening on Mon, 23 March from 4.15pm.

Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated each year on 27th January, the date of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. Holocaust Memorial Day remembers the millions of victims of the Nazi Holocaust, including six million Jews, and of other, more recent genocides.

The Sophie Scholl Awards“Someone has to make a start.” How about you?

The Sophie Scholl Awards were introduced at Runshaw as part of our events to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. The courage of Sophie Scholl, of a similar age to Runshaw students, was an inspiration to us all. We now extend an invitation to pupils in partner high schools to help us celebrate the short life of this brave young woman by participating in awards reserved for them.

Sophie was 18 when the war started in 1939. She and her family, inspired by their strong religious beliefs, actively resisted the Nazis – an incredibly courageous thing for Germans to do. In 1942, Sophie, along with her brother Hans and a few other students, founded the White Rose, a non-violent resistance movement which painted anti-fascist slogans on walls, defaced Nazi emblems and distributed anti-war leaflets. In early 1943, Sophie and the other leaders of the group were caught, condemned as traitors and executed by beheading. Sophie was just 21.

During her trial, despite the attempts of the judge and prosecutors to browbeat and ridicule her, Sophie remained steadfast as one individual against the massive power of the Nazi state. “Someone has to make a start”, she said. Convinced that good in the end would prevail, her last words as she was led into the execution yard were, “The sun still shines!”

For many inspired by Sophie’s example, a white rose has come to represent peace, justice and a love of humanity.

Students in partner high schools are asked to make an entry based on ONE of the following themes:(a) The inspiration of Sophie Scholl(b) The White Rose(c) Someone has to make a start

Entries can be• a written piece (maximum 250 words but could be

much shorter)• a poem• a piece of art work or music – of any kind• an idea to do something at school based on

Sophie’s example• anything at all based on one of the above themes.

Entries can be individual or group work.

Entries should be forwarded to Giles Inman, Runshaw College, Leyland, PR25 3DQ. The deadline for entries is 4.30pm on Tuesday 25th February 2020.

Awards of book tokens and certificates will be awarded for the best entries.
