Test: WED. APRIL 3
Terms to know• Covenant means "to come
together" or "to agree“; you give an oath, which involves a higher authority, a divine witness: GOD
• Common Good - describes a specific "good" that is beneficial for all (or most) members of a given community; it allows individuals and groups to reach their full potential
• Legitimate authority - an authority (eg. Teachers, policemen, etc) that protects the common good
Terms to know:• Incarnation means ‘in the flesh’; it
refers to the appearance of God on earth in human form.
• Social Sin: a ‘collective’ sin; sin(s) committed by many people that affects many people; eg. we contribute to the social sin of poverty when we ignore helping the poor
• Original Sin: the first sin committed by human kind; Adam and Eve committed a sin by disobeying God by eating fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
• Reconciliation: means “to flow together again”; the ending of conflict or renewing of a friendly relationship between disputing people or groups
• Conversion: a change of hear; it requires; contrition, confession, correction
1. What is the difference between a contract and covenant.Contract
• An agreement between equals (human to human)
• It deals with Secular (societal) affairs (money)
• It involves a promises,
• It is based on mistrust, therefore signatures are required for protection
• Lasts for a certain amount of time and then it expires
• negotiable
Covenant• An agreement between God and
man (non equals)
• It deals with Sacred (God) affairs (eternal life)
• covenant involves an oaths.
• It is based on love and commitment
• Effects the generation and can last forever
• Not negotiable (God sets the terms and makes the offer, we decide to accept or reject His offer).
the Common Good - describes a specific "good" that is shared and beneficial for all (or most) members of a given community allows individuals and groups to reach their full potential• No weapon policy• No smoking in school• Wearing uniform at school
2. What is Common Good
3. How does Incarnation teaches us about the value of human body?
• Jesus lived a physical life, this helps us to understand that our bodies are valued form the moment of conception until death.
• Anytime we show a lock if respect for our body or for other people’s body, we are showing a lack of respect for Christ
4. How do we Sin?• Sin is any thought, word, action, or neglect (omission)
prohibited (forbidden) by the law of God. • Sin of Commission: an ‘active’ sin; the person is aware of
the right act, but fails to do the right thing.• Sin of Omission: a ‘passive’ sin; a person sins by not acting;
failing to do something good when you know you should;• Personal Sin: a selfish choice made by one person which
has destructive consequences . • Social Sin: ‘collective’ sin; sin committed by many people
that affects many people eg. we contribute to the social sin of Poverty.
• Institutional Sin: wrongdoing that results from corruption of institutional structures eg. the abuse of children who were in the care of the institutional church in Ireland.
• Systemic Sin: wrongdoing that is built into social structures
•
5. The difference between moral sin and venial SinMortal Sin
• ‘grave’, or ‘serious’ sins.• committing a sin with deliberate
consent of the sinner; • One knows that her/his sin is
wrong, but still deliberately commits the sin.
• Eg. stealing expensive items. • Eg. take or sell illegal drugs• Eg. unjustly Injure another
physically
Venial Sin • ‘slight’ or ‘forgivable’ sin• does not break our friendship
with God, although it injures it. • Eg. theft of small or
inexpensive items• Eg. making fun of the
handicapped or elderly• Eg. wishing evil upon another• Eg. spreading rumors
• PRIDE (VANITY)• ENVY• GLUTTONY• LUST• ANGER or WRATH• GREED• SLOTH
6. The Seven Deadly Sinscan be either venial or mortal sins; they are the sins because they lead to other sins.
Why is pride so sinful? There is nothing wrong with being happy that you have accomplished your goals, but you should be thankful that God gave you that ability. He is the one who enables us to excel in any activity. Why is pride so sinful? Pride is giving yourself the credit for something that God has accomplished. Pride is taking the glory that belongs to God alone and giving it to yourself. Pride is essentially self-worship. Anything we accomplish in this world would not have been possible were it not for God enabling and sustaining us. That is why we give God the glory...for He alone deserves it.
• organic life on our planet has changed over long periods of time and continues to change by a process known as ‘natural selection.’
7. What is the Evolution theory?
• Science explains the how, but not the why. Religion explains the why, but usually not the how.
• So if both of them were accepted together, you can get the how and the why. Such as in evolution. Science says that through mutations and natural selection, we got the species we see today. Religion says (at least Christianity) that God created this universe and everything in it so that we humans could enjoy the works of His hand and become stewards of what He has made.
How does the scientific creation and the Genesis creation complement each other?
8. What is Reconciliation?• Reconciliation means “Flow together again”,
to live in harmony; It means the ending of conflict or renewing of a friendly relationship between disputing people or groups
Necessary Elements for reconciliation:(i) Conversion: a change of heart
(1) Contrition (or sorrow): the person must see it was wrong what she/he has done and is genuinely sorry.
(2) Confession: person must admit and take responsibility for their action.
(3) Correction: person must do what he/she can to repair the harm
(ii) Forgiveness: let go of desire for revenge Parable of the Prodigal Son
