Objectives• To raise the awareness of the Graded Care

Profile (GCP) risk assessment tool that can be used when Neglect of a child/ren is of concern.

• To understand which professionals should consider using the GCP risk assessment tool.

• To understand the GCP process, its use and formulating a future action plan

NEGLECT in Hertfordshire

• In September 2012 there were 671 children with Child Protection (CP) plans; 425 were due to Neglect. 63.3%

• In September 2013 there were 885 children with CP plans; 518 were due to Neglect. 58.5%

• In September 2014 there were 1,065 children with CP plans; 672 were due to Neglect. 63%

‘Good enough’ parenting• ‘Good enough’ parents show pride and pleasure in

their child’s progress together with many other positives such as affection, tenderness, interest and delight which will increase the child’s confidence and self esteem.

• There are also, at times, negative feelings towards their children such as frustration, fatigue, anger, boredom, anxiety, fear, disappointment and others, which parents learn to accept as normal when occurring only occasionally.

Formulating an action plan• Areas that are assessed as “not good

enough” usually placed in columns 3 or 4 & become a “list” that results in an action plan

• The action plan requires prioritisation – usually up to 3 items at any stage

• The action plan agreed with parent needs to be realistic with agreed time-frames

• The aim is not to overwhelm the parent but to work with them at their pace (if possible)

• Small realistic stepping stones can empower, improve self-esteem and enhance the ability to change.

• The aim is progression with sustainability

Consider doing a GCP?• If you decide the GCP is appropriate, contact

the CAF Helpdesk to enquire whether a GCP has already been carried out with this child/ family and who the lead professional is (or was)

• Prior to carrying out the GCP, ensure a full discussion about GCP takes place with the parent/carer and the consent/sharing information form is signed by the parent carer participating in the GCP process.

• If the parent/carer DO agree to participate a GCP, log it with the CAF Helpdesk.

• If the parent/carer DO NOT agree to

participate there may be a need to consider a referral to children services, but you must still work with the family and continue assessing the situation
