What a great way to start my year as your President. We all had a marvellous

conference with fantastic weather. Many thanks to Keith and Jane and family and the Dumfriesshire Club Members for arranging a truly memorable conference. Let’s hope the weather behaves next year in Northumberland.

The Royal Highland was next on the agenda, congratulations

go to the Lawrie families with Cuthill Towers winning the Ayrshire

Championship with their aptly named Highland Bloom young cow and Sandyford winning the Red and White Champion with their 4th calver Ladd Delight. It was really encouraging to see Ayrshire numbers far outweighing the other dairy breeds.

A week later I attended the judging seminar in Devon at Rob and Anita Cornish’s, a very successful day marking Duncans last day as Breed Manager. Thanks Duncan for all you have done for the Society, you have certainly taken the Young Breeders to a level that is the envy of the other breeds. Wishing you all the best for the future.

In July, Angie and myself attended the Royal Garden Party at Holyrood House, along with Keith and Jane, again the weather was brilliant sunshine.

The Great Yorkshire Show was well attended with Richard Baynes taking top spot with Sea Lily 23, with David Sanderson in Reserve with his senior cow.

The following week I was in Ayr to interview applicants for the Breed Managers position, Alan Timbrell being the successful candidate, many of you will know him already, I’m sure his enthusiasm and knowledge of the Ayrshire breed and breeders will make him a valuable member of the team. Two weeks later Angie and I drove the 6 hour journey to Wales for the Royal Welsh, again the weather was nearly too hot! Congratulations to the Tomlinsons winning the Ayrshire Championship as well as the heifer championship with Triclo Joybell who went on to take the interbreed Championship the next day.

On the home front harvest has been stop start due to the inconsistent weather; at least the grass situation is better than last year with both silage pits nearly full. Why does it rain when you don’t want it to! Hopefully we will be finished harvest before UK Dairy Day where I hope to meet up with many of you at Telford.

2019 is certainly flying by! It’s been a busy few months here at HQ. Our young members enjoyed an excellent weekend kindly hosted by the Cornwall Club and this year’s conference went so well thanks to the attention to detail from Keith & Jane Davidson and their army of helpers. Preparations for the 2020 conference are well underway and bookings will be available by the end of the year. At the Highland show we held a presentation to say goodbye to Duncan who has played an important part in

helping me develop my role and keeping me right on many aspects within the Society. I am grateful for his guidance and for making my job very enjoyable and wish him lots of luck for his future.

Finally, I would like to welcome Alan Timbrell to the team as Breed Manager, having been born into the Ayrshire breed he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role. Alan’s late father Gordon, established the Millford herd of pedigree Ayrshire’s in the late 50’s. Alan still registers under the Millford prefix and last year had a world photographic win with his October born Calf

Millford Maple Lark jointly owned with Millie Tomlinson. Alan

has had an enjoyable career with Alta Genetics for the

Alan was born 1937 at Blakie Myers Farm, Botton. The family moved to Rosedale to a rented farm called Hill Farm when he was three. His father kept dairy shorthorns and freisian crosses. The introduction of Ayrshires came about through Alan relief milking for Dimmocks who had Beck House Ayrshires at Cropton.

Alan met Joan in 1967 and they bought Low Thorgill Farm in 1968 (through the sale of his show racing pigeons he could raise the deposit), they got married in 1969 and soon after Sean was born followed by Robert over two years later. The farm had no electricity or water when bought and chickens were kept in the far end room. Lots of improvements had to be made.

Rosedale Ayrshires were started by purchasing two cows off Ronnie Hindmarsh from the NE Herds sale, where he purchased Alison from Ronnie as a pri-vate purchase and the Stella family from Miss Jacob Smith, progeny from these families still exisit today. From the Alison family he bred Rosedale Mr Magic by Brocklehill Magic Touch, even up until his death in March he had received a cheque for semen sales, the best part of 20 years on.

He had a cow family from David Cannon the Nell’s who were predominantly black, the family are still in the herd but they are no longer Black.

Many a trip with the boys (Kenny Wade, Joe Water-house, Philip Stevenson and Jim Muir) to Ayr Bull Sales were looked forward to with purchases such as Caldervale Justine and Croftside Lucky girl. From dispersal sales he bought Wheatrigg Heatherbell, Ravendale Lotty from Derek Little, Fourth Milestone Marrigold and most recently Barr Sandyrose. All purchases have gone to make excellent families.

Alan had two terms on council, when meetings were held at Garstang, along with spells as chairman and president of the North East Ayrshires. Alan and Joan both looked forward to attending the conferences held all over the UK and enjoyed the World Conference to New Zealand. Lately they especially enjoyed cruising

A TRUE DALESMAN – ALAN MYERSBy Robert Adams

around Europe with Kenny and Merilin Wade.

Over the decades Alan judged the length and breadth of the country with both cows and his hobby of show rac-ing pigeons and jacobins. His other passion was hunt-ing with his terriers and the Thorgill flock of Swaledale Sheep, what else could live up these hill sides. In his later years he enjoyed showing the swales with his grandchildren and attending days out to the Tup sales, you could never go past a farm without who is it from where is it lives there? That left everyone confused.

The farm started with 100 acres 50 years ago and with purchased and some rented it now stands at over 400. With a milking portion of 90 cows plus followers and 500 plus breeding swales. The sale of Swale tups was a big part of Alan’s year a real coming together of hill farmers.

Alan left the day to day running of the cows to Sean who lives at Low Thorgill with Steph and their two boys Mark and John. Robert lives up Brandsdale (10 miles away) breeding blue faced leicesters and mule sheep, he farms with his wife Julie and two grown up son’s Sam and Dan.

Manderville, Whitecroft Panell, Gwynnog Primetime, Swaites Nickle, Beeline Santa Rock and Ravenhill Victory.

Over the past five years the programme has been chaired by Alan Timbrell. The committee wish to thank Alan for his valuable contribution to the programme and leading it to where it is today.

The genomic testing in the UK for the Ayrshire breed has run into several problems on female testing. Of the 167 females submitted so far, 48 of them have failed to be evaluated due to low imputation call rates.

As of April 2019, AHDB stopped reporting on any animals with a call rate below 0.75. Low call rate results are due to the lack of reference from sires and maternal grand sires and also by the AHDB technology on evaluating smaller breeds. AHDB are updating their software which is ongoing, and this will help us going forward. This is expected to be up and running by September. Also, to increase our reliability we must test more sires and maternal grand sires. We have done research to identify these bulls and we will proceed to test them through semen samples.

Cogent have now confirmed that they can launch the 70k chip test for us as soon as we are ready, but until we sort these other issues, we suggest holding off female testing until our service providers are ready, to avoid a build-up of unreported data. You will be informed once we have received confirmation from our service providers that female testing can recommence.

It feels wrong to head this article as a “Breed Managers Report” since resigning at the end of June this year. However, there are a couple of subjects to touch on followed by a few of my last words to our members.

I will start with Breed Heritage. At the 2019 ACS Conference council meeting a new Chairman was elected in Peter Drummond from the Cottown herd in Northern Ireland. Peter has served on the committee for several years and has a good knowledge of the breed and has the enthusiasm to take the programme forward. Also new to the committee is Colin Christophers. Colin is a past member and Chairman of Breed Heritage, and we welcome him back to the table to gain from his knowledge and experience of the breed.

A conference call between the committee recently took place to look at the structure and build on it over the next 12 months. It was also agreed that once we have the confidence that the female genomic testing procedure can be relied on that as many 2018/19 females born to BH mating’s would be tested and funded by BH. New female lines have also been identified to watch and a list of sires to be used was implemented. These include Rosehill

The National Ayrshire show to be held at UK Dairy Day in September will again highlight the quality animals in our breed from all over the UK. This year’s judge is Gilmour Lawrie. Gilmour has officiated all over the UK and is a very well-respected breeder and Judge. Our Young Members will again be preparing and showing animals for breeders unable to attend themselves and this year will be led by James Lawrie.

In October the ABAB calf show will be held at the East of England Showground in Peterborough. An event where the Youth of our organisation get together and do our breed proud. This year they will be joined by the International Youth tour delegates, so I hope you all make them feel welcome and show them a good time.

So, these really are my last words now. Our breed has prospered well over the last few years. We have welcomed many new faces into our organisation, we have seen a large increase in registrations that we should be proud of, our Young Members continue to develop ensuring we have the breeders of the future! So much to be positive about and thankful for. I believe we should never rest on our laurels as we can always strive to improve.

Remember genetic potential can only be realised if the opportunity is given, this means management must come to the fore for this to happen.

The value of pedigree stock should never be underestimated, and you should realise that this is an asset of your business, not just for now but in years to come.

Our shop window is the showring much of the time. It is so important that the right kind of cow is recognised as what the breed is about. Functional traits should always come first ahead of “cosmetics”.

Ayrshire is a niche breed and should always hold its own identity as an alternative breed, maintain its valuable traits and don’t even attempt to make it something it shouldn’t be!

It really has been my pleasure working with the breeders, council, Presidents and staff of the Ayrshire Cattle Society over the last eight years. I have enjoyed my time immensely and am thankful for all the wonderful opportunities the job has given me. I wish you all well in your future endeavours and thank you for your friendship.

A new release in the Cattle Services Ayr Ltd portfolio is Sandyford Time Lord ET. This young bull descends from the famous Clover family bred by Sandyford Ayrshires. In this Family Focus edition, we shall give you an insight behind his family lines.

In December 2002 the Blackadder Eagan sired

Sandyford Clover 7 VG86 gave birth to a heifer calf by KC Roses Chatter Red. Her name was Sandyford Clover 10, and who was to know on that winter’s morning back in 2002, that a star had been born!

At the Dairy Farming Event in 2005 Clover 10 was exhibited for the first time where she took the Interbreed heifer title. Year after year since that prestigious accolade she has gone on to win Championship after championship all over the country, and on most occasions went on to also take the Interbreed titles at many major UK shows. In 2010 Sandyford Clover 10 was announced as the highest scored animal ever in the Ayrshire breed at Ex97. She has since been scored Ex97 on a further five occasions, her last being in August 2018. Not only does she have the looks, but she has also excelled in the milking parlour. Eight lactations over 10,000 kgs with a highest recording of 14,258 kgs in 305 days. Her total lifetime yield is a massive 122,241kgs. Now at 16 years old her title reads - Sandyford Clover 10 Ex97 8E LP120.

The next generation on is her 2007 born daughter Sandyford Clover 12 Ex94 3E 2 Stars. She is sired by Hulton Park Twilight, a son of a member of the Twinkle family from Ashmansworth. Four VG daughters have rewarded her with a 2-star Brood cow status. One of those daughters is Sandyford Maple Clover VG86 3 Stars. This Mapleburn Remington daughter produced a top yield of 11,619 kgs as a three-year-old. She has twenty-six progeny registered all under six years old and has already claimed a three-star Brood cow status.

Sandyford Maple Clover is the Dam of Sandyford Time Lord ET. His sire is one of the breeds greatest! Celandine First Lord. He was a Bankend Lord Ontario Son out of the four-star Brood cow Changue Celandine 21 VG. First Lord is known for his superb health traits which have been evident from his progeny. With a massive -21 for SCC, -3 mastitis resilience and being positive on fertility and lifespan demonstrates why this old bull still sits among the highest index bulls in the breed. A sire of this calibre along with such a famous and profitable cow family must be worth using in breeding programs on all systems and will appeal to Pedigree enthusiasts and commercial dairymen.

Sandyford Time Lord ET is now available worldwide in conventional and in SexedUltra 4M and offers an impressive PTA of PLI £204 +309kgs Milk, Fat 6.4kgs Protein 9kgs. He is 90.625% Pure so when used on 100% females’ daughters will be recorded as Pure!

At the end of June, a Judging Seminar was held at Butterbesley Ayrshires in Devon. Breeders travelled from as far as Northern Ireland to attend the event. Two classes of quality cows were prepared and turned out in great form by the Cornish family. The day started with a presentation by Duncan on the Judging consistency of Ayrshire judges and the priority of our main traits. A discussion between breeders showed that those present on the day agreed on the type of cow which promotes our breed to the fore!

The two classes were then judged and reasons were given displaying a real positivity from our judges. Both classes saw similar placings with some fantastic reason giving.

We were then treated to a hog roast which was very kindly sponsored by De Laval along with the usual superb hospitality from the Cornish family before taking the opportunity to inspect the Butterbesley herd. 240 cows are currently in the herd. Ayrshires were introduced here in 2013 and now Ayrshire bloodlines make up three quarters of the herd. They are a very functional herd of cows showing all the obvious signs of good production. Visitors were very impressed on how the Ayrshires have been so successful being bred onto Holsteins producing great conformation and high health cows.

We must thank Robert and Anita Cornish along with all of their family for kindly hosting the event, providing us with great cows and facilities and for that usual wonderful Cornish hospitality.

2019 looks like being another great year for UK Ayrshire genetics. Enquiries continue to come in from all over the world about the sires that we have a va i l a b l e . It amazes me how m u c h p o s i t i v e f e e d b a c k I see on f a c e b o o k

about UK cows and I feel that at this point, the UK has a lot to offer to the Ayrshire breed worldwide - since the last journal, we have exported straws to Australia, New Zealand and Sweden. Within the UK, sales remain very strong for Conventional and Sexed Ultra 4m semen. We are still selling a wide range of bulls and I never see two orders the same.

On the bull front, we are excited to release 2 new sires this Autumn which are both 100% bred. They are very exciting young bulls as they offer something a little different to what we currently have in the stud. The first bull is Biddesden Hector who is a son of Stretton Triple Prime. Hector is bred from one of the best cows in the country, Bailiffscourt Hortense 267, who classified Ex93 in her 9th lactation after she had already produced 80 tonnes of milk. Hortense 267 is sired by Horseclose Jubilee. Hector will offer breeders the chance to use a complete outcross sire in today’s market whose PTAs still stand up with many bulls that are available now. Hector will be available to use this Autumn in SExED ULTRA 4m and conventional straws in the UK and internationally.

The second bull is Pam Ayrs Hawaiian who is a Lagace Ristourn son of Pam Ayrs Hawaii Five-O Ex93. Hawaiian has a fantastic pedigree with his 3 closest dams being an Ex93 Family-Af-Ayr Poker Duncan then an Ex96 Pam Ayrs Dreamcatcher who is bred from an Ex92 Mccornick Nelson. Hawaiian will be one of the highest PLI pure sires that Cattle Services have released for some time.

Out and about, it has been great to see continued success from progeny of Cattle Services bulls in the show ring. At the recent Royal Welsh Show, it was fantastic to see Allstar Triclo Joybell winning the Interbreed Heifer Championship - Joybell is sired by Sandyford Triclo who is breeding fantastic uddered heifers everywhere that I go; they are also milking well for their

CATTLE SERVICES

NEWS

owners. Further success at the Royal Welsh included Sandyford Famed Clover winning the Maiden

heifer class - Clover is sired by Hunnington Famous. For me, one of the biggest highlights of the show was seeing Haresfoot Napier Punch Ex94 winning the dry cow class. Punch is the complete cow - sired by Ardmore Crown Napier, shown at 11 years of age after having 7 calves and producing over 70 tonnes of milk, she is not just a great cow in her own right, she is also a fantastic brood cow with her son Gwynnog Primetime being the Number 1 Type bull available in the UK.

The Junior Champion at the Royal Highland show was the milking heifer Hilltower Modern Marcy who is a daughter of West Mossgiel Modern Reality. At the same show, another daughter of Hunnington Famous, Troutbeck Famous Jess 3, won the maiden heifer class. A pair of cows who are both classified Ex93 points were Champion and Reserve Champion at the East

Kilbride Show: Willowfields Winnie 2 who is sired by West Mossgiel Modern Reality was Champion with the Reserve Champion being Kittochside Nora Louise who is sired by Grandage Bright Spark.

Out on farms, the daughters of Swaites Nickle continue to impress me with their deep open dairy frames and fantastic udder. He is not only a bull to leave great herd cows, he is siring show winners: at the Great Eccleston Show Jamara Nickle Little Minx won Grand Champion. It is great to see progeny of Cattle Services bulls not only performing at home but also getting some fantastic results in the show ring which is ultimately the biggest shop window that we have.

It is good to hear great reports on conception rates with the Sexed Ultra 4m product. Remember we have the following bulls available for you: Brieryside Magic, Swaites Dermott, Heydale White Willow, Sandyford Time Lord and Lyner Oblique Focus. Don’t forget to take advantage of this great product and breed some heifer calves from your best cows and cow families.

Finally, Cattle Services would like to thank Duncan for all his help over the years, not only in breeding some great bulls for Cattle Services to market but also for all of his help with bull selection and opening up new markets at home and abroad. Your knowledge and input will be missed and everyone at Cattle Services wishes you a speedy recovery.

Twenty five years ago today, I gave birth to a baby heifer, who was subsequently named after Marks’ favourite cow at the time – Charlotte! Thinking back over the past quarter century at what we’ve achieved as a family and as farmers, who’d have thought we’d be building (as we’ll never finish) a new dairy unit.

At the end of March, we held an Open Day to mark the new beginnings at Alma Bank Farm and welcomed our many builder friends, farming neighbours, family from near and far, and also our Ayrshire Cattle Society friends who all popped in for a bite to eat and drink as well as a tour around the new sheds. Once that day passed and our building contractors moved on to other projects, it all became quiet, just the sound of cows, tractors and milking machines. What bliss!

The Cow Classroom was also completed making a great party venue! Farmer Barnes Dairy is well and truly up and running. We’ve hosted a dozen Farm Tours this summer with great success and visitors have found it fascinating! Their feedback comments make it clear why it is SO important that we, as dairy farmers, need to communicate what we do “day in day out” to the rest of the world! Our life is so different to the vast majority of the public and we need to embrace them as they, after all, are our customers.

The Tractor & Trailer rides are going down a storm. I’m very lucky that I have had the support of my family. Not only did my clever, handy and retired dairy farmer Dad refurbish it, my helpful Mum painted it John Deere green and yellow to match the tractor. But more importantly - the visitors love it! No

more accidental standing in cow muck in summer sandals!

Just as we were about to host our first group of visitors, Mark had a knee operation and I had an accident with my finger which was bad timing. We couldn’t have continued without the help again from my parents. Dad has the important job of driving the tractor whilst Mark sits in the trailer commentating for the visitors making them howl with laughter (probably at my expense). My mother bakes the cakes and make the numerous pots of tea for

them whilst Harry carries on with milking the cows (the star attraction) whilst I do the guided tour around. It’s been a truly family affair which we all love and so do our visitors.

I’m looking forward to hosting some School groups during the Autumn/Winter terms as many pupils have never set foot on a farm or seen a cow close up! That’s scary if we want these kids to by our dairy products in the future.

Also we have other plans for the Cow Classroom such as a ‘Stilton for

Christmas’ cookery demos, Family Days over October half term for Grandparents to bring their families along and selling a good range of Stilton Cheese up to Christmas by holding some taster days.We can see endless possibilities as time progresses.

Our old farmyard has now been demolished and we are currently in talks with a developer who plans to build 10 houses on the site. Once that deal is completed we can start to think about building the new Farm House at Alma Bank, but realistically I think it won’t be until 2020.

Mark and I have just returned from a lovely weeks’ holiday in North Devon

at Lynton & Lynmouth. The weather was fantastic and we find Exmoor to be a most relaxing place with plenty of space and wonderful scenery. Of course, we had to call in to see Robert & Anita Cornish’s farm on the outskirts of Exmoor National Park. What a beautiful place to live and farm. When the weather’s good, there’s no better place to be but in Britain. Now we’re looking forward to our next trip – Australia in Jan 2020 for the World Ayrshire Conference!

Life is for living and boy, are we living it. Thanks for reading my Blogs over the past couple of years. I’ve enjoyed sharing them with you.

Life Is For LivingSo Live It!

Hi, I’m Jane Barnes, married to Mark Barnes and, with our children Charlotte & Harry, we farm at Somerby in East Leicestershire. Our 180 cow ‘Somerby’ Ayrshire herd produces milk for Blue Stilton at Long Clawson Dairy. For the past 15 years or so I’ve also given talks to groups - “Tales from a Dairy Farmers’ Wife” - which is all about my life on our family run farm, telling amusing stories and real life anecdotes. Launceston in Cornwall was the venue for the 2019 Young Breeders gathering. This event is held for Young Members of our organisation to learn and compete in stock judging, sire selection, clipping and showmanship, and above all to meet each other and make lifelong friends. Points are allocated for all competitions and they are collated together to go towards the prestigious Hugh Stevenson competition. On Thursday 11th April Members travelled from all over the UK to the Trethorne Hotel and golf club where they were able to settle in and catch up with each other. Following dinner, we visited the onsite leisure park for an evening entertainment program of ten pin bowling and dodgem cars.

On Friday morning following a short bus journey, delegates arrived at Glubhole Farm, home of the Pedigree Lyner Ayrshire Herd by kind permission of Courtney, Christine, Matthew and Emma Walters. Two classes of six fantastic cows were put in front of us for the stock judging, the first competition towards the Hugh Stevenson Trophy. Duncan gave a detailed tuition on judging and which traits to prioritise before the start of the judging, then members placed the class and gave reasons on their observations. The judge for the competition was Dawn Coryn who we thank sincerely for her contribution to the event, whilst James Lawrie took time to listen to the beginner’s reasons and give them pointers on how to improve and be confident in their observations. We were then treated to view the Lyner herd who were very uniformed, demonstrating impressive longevity along with super udders and quality legs and feet.

After a very short journey we arrived at Higher Rillaton Farm for lunch and the sire selection competition. This is the home of Arthur and Debbie Walters and family and their West Berriow herd. We were refreshed with a wonderful hog roast lunch before the next competition commenced. Here we had two cows on display along with their pedigree and

production details. Competitors are given the pedigree and data from five proven sires from which they must select a sire to mate with each cow and give their reasons. Again, education is paramount! Duncan and James took a group each of the younger delegates to explain the process and teach them to read pedigrees and sire proofs for them to understand the process. A walk around the herd followed where delegates noted that strong cow families were being worked with in order to develop and continue the high type of cow that the Walters family love.

On Friday night after dinner, Deborah Christophers along with her army of helpers had organised several games designed to cause as much mayhem as possible which was great fun for all of the young members.

Following a late night, the delegates boarded the bus on Saturday morning to travel down to St Allen, near Truro to Trennary Farm for the clipping and showmanship competitions. Colin and Jenny Christophers and family and their world-renowned Rosehill Ayrshires were our wonderful hosts for the day. Many calves had been haltered and prepared for the competitions along with fantastic facilities to make the competitions run smoothly. Each member was allocated a calf and then were able to set up for the clipping competition. Our clipping judge was Chris Creeper who gave all the members so much encouragement and constructive instructions. Meanwhile James Lawrie was spending time teaching our youngest members the art of clipping and how to be safe doing the task. After an hour and following a quick inspection by Chris, the calves were washed and left to dry whilst we had a Cornish Pasty lunch before the final clip took place. Following the final inspection of each calf by Chris, it was a quick change into breed uniform for the commencement of the Showmanship.

The judge for this section was Dawn Coryn who again did a great job in selecting her winners and making placements down the line. Congratulations to the champion show person, Beth Murch from Devon.

The final night is always presentation night. It was very nice to welcome some of the local breeders who came along to give support to our youngsters. Our President, Keith Davidson, presented the Hugh Stevenson Trophy to the 2019 winner, Jake Sayer, and the junior winner of the John Cochrane trophy was Megan Stratton.

As part of the Hugh Stevenson winners award, Jake will travel to Australia in January 2020 to work with the Boldview Ayrshire herd during International Dairy week in Shepperton during the World Conference visit. We must thank Scott Braendler and family for hosting Jake during his time there and we wish him a wonderful experience.

Our extended thanks must go to the event sponsors, our hosts, the Cornwall club, James Lawrie and our judges for helping us make this event another fantastic memorable occasion.

YOUNG BREEDERS REPRESENTATIVEJake Sayer from Denmans Ayrshires in Somerset. I am 23 and have been working for Wendy Young, doing all kinds of dairy cattle preparation but am excited to be about to start a new job at Brieryside Ayrshires. Before clipping I spent 5 years on a large local dairy farm where we milked 650 holsteins (and an odd Ayrshire of mine) but one day hope to milk my own herd of Ayrshires. I also have an interest in pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle having established my own small herd after our milking herd was dispersed.

Outside of work I have been an active member of Young Farmers having had county roles in the past and am currently South West Area Chairman which having moved north hasn’t been particularly easy but has been a good experience.

I am very keen on showing having started with calves in Young Farmers, I now enjoy showing at local and national shows with successes including All Britain Calf show champion in 2015 and good results with our homebred Ex94 point cow last year.

I have been a regular attendant of the Young Breeders week-end since I first went in 2015 and I have also participated in the Young Breeders team at the National show every year since then too, both of these events are great ways of learning and meeting like minded young people and mak-ing great friendships and in my case I also met my girlfriend Amy at young breeders. Young Breeders has also given me good opportunities, last year myself and Stuart Williams were selected to represent the UK at a European Red Breeds Showmanship competition in Denmark and this year I was fortunate enough to win the Hugh Stevenson Award at the Young Breeders weekend in Cornwall, this was a great honour and something I am very proud of and am now looking forward to a trip to Australia in January as my prize which coincides with IDW and the world Ayrshire Conference.

I am looking forward to my role and thanks to Asher who has stepped down after representing the young breeders for the last couple of years.

TYPE OF SYSTEM AND A SHORT BRIEF OF YOUR BUSINESS (FARM SIZE, DIVERSIFICATION, BEEF, ARABLE ETC.) John - A grazing herd, paddock system with all year round calving. Two wind turbines on farm, sub contract to two local agricultural contractors, 40% of the herd are served to beef bulls with the rest AI & natural service.

Matthew - 315 cows in total, 155 Ayrshires and 160 Holsteins milked on two units with all milk sold to Lactalis, Stranraer on a cheese contract. All year round calving with emphasis on milk from forage, cows grazed (weather permitting) End March- November, TMR in winter.

Allan Mixed herd of Ayrshires, Holsteins but mainly made up of Ayrshire (blended / hybrids) Run as a family partnership along with Brother Stewart and parents. 550 acres owned and a further 80 acres rented. 30 acres of w.wheat grown for whole crop, the remainder all down to grass. 400 young stock made up all ages of dairy followers and beef crosses (Aberdeen Angus and British Blue ). The beef cross females are mainly sold for breeding and the bullocks sold store.

Dairy cows are all paddock grazed with some buffer feeding during the summer. Cubicle housed and TMR fed during the winter.

Scott - We run a 198ha tenanted farm on an all year round calving system, the aim being to produce as much from forage and home grown feeds. Zero grazing grass with dry and late lactation cows grazing outside in summer. Winter wheat and spring barley grown for grain and whole crop.

MOST CONSISTENT COW FAMILY IN YOUR HERD AND WHY? John - Two cow families that stand out are the Melanie’s from Changue for type, milk production & fertility. Also the Georgie Girl’s from Middle, a more hybrid family and standing out for similar reasons, hardiness – we have lots of daughters on the ground from these families.

Matthew - Both our Eunice and Kirsty families have been reliable breeders over the years. The Kirsty line have an ability to breed a special one, but it is the Eunice’s that are our most prolific with over 160 registered. They are stylish, deep bodied cows that are long lived and regularly our highest producers.

Allan - Has to be the ‘April’ and ‘Oyster’ families. Both families have homebred origins. They appear to both consistently breed well to many different service sires and regularly produce a similar stamp of useful cattle.

Scott - Most recently the Garthland Peach line of cows have done the job for us, long living, fertile and robust.

SIRE WHICH HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN YOUR HERD AND WHY ?John - Natural service sire Knowe Obligation. Daughters consistently good on type and lifting milk production by 350 litres more than their mothers.

Matthew - Bankend Brown Bomber was a bull that was very successful in our herd. Although we never had a great number of daughters, they were a fantastic group of powerful, high yielding cows with great udders that bred some excellent progeny. A personal favourite was Carsenaw Clay 17 Ex93. Probably one of the most balanced, productive, cows we have ever bred.

Allan - Fineview Sparky Ex91. He was a hybrid bull as a result of blending the two April and Oyster families together. A lot of natural service is used in the herd mainly of homebred bulls.

Scott - Of all the homebred bulls we have had, this has to be Garthland Joseph, sired by Ja Bob Jordan, he consistently left powerful, deep bodied cows with great udders, over eight years he went on to sire 151 daughters for us and over 50 more for Colfin and High Mark!

AI SIRES CURRENTLY BEING USED?John – Rosehill Vitality, Ardmore Crown Napier, Lagace Ristourn

Matthew - Swaites Nickle, Brieryside Magic, Changue Stadium, Marbrae Bigtime, Carnell Tristan and Sandyford Time Lord

Allan - Troutbeck Progress, Sandyford Triclo, Cuthill Towers Buster, West Spittal Leader

Scott - Troutbeck Skyfall, Beeline Santa Rock, Whitecroft Nectar, Aladdin Red, Charpentier Red Hot Red, Swissbec Jackpot Red, Emert Jedi Eclipse

H a v i n g been born in 1960, I thought I’d look b a c k t h r o u g h Ayrsh i re Journals from that year.

Many of us now use Social M e d i a to follow the latest news in

the cattle world. In the 1960’s we looked forward to the latest edition of the Journal, or farming papers to keep up to date with the latest news and pictures of the prize-winners. It’s interesting to note that in those days, we didn’t have digital cameras, or the assistance of modern technology in order to edit and enhance the pictures!

Just recently on social media there was a demonstration showing a balanced dairy cow’s proportions being measured using a piece of string. I remember my father emphasizing the importance of these measurements to me when I was young, in order to produce that long-lasting, profitable dairy cow which is also pleasing to the eye.

I thought it would be interesting to take a brief look back at a couple of shows from 1960, the Royal Show and the Dairy Show, even though I wasn’t around for them, being born right at the very end of that year! The Royal Show of 1960 was held in Cambridge, where the judge, Mr William Mackay, a Past President of the Society, spent some 5 hours judging.

The Champion cow was Aster Baby Seal 3rd , the only entrant for Mr Rex S G Salter. She was an 8 year old, who not only won the senior cow in milk class, but continued on to become Supreme Female Champion. The report states “ She was brought out in wonderful form and with typical Breed characteristics, shapely vessel and well placed teats.”

I’m sure many of you have the Beswick model of the Ayrshire bull Whitehill Mandate. He was placed 2nd in the senior bull class this year at the Royal Show, having previously won four Championships out of six consecutive Royal Show appearances. In the Inter-Breed classes, the Ayrshire pair consisted of female and male Champions – Aster Baby Seal 3rd and Knowe Winsome Lad, who won the Burke Trophy for the fourth year time – previously winning in 1951, 1955 and 1956. There were eight Dairy Breeds represented in this Interbreed Championship.

On the second day of the Royal Show there was always great excitement for the Ayrshire Breeders’ Clubs’ Judging Competition. Some 63 competitors took part this particular year, with the overall winner being one of only six female competitors – Mrs Diane Martin – from the famous Barnes Herd. In those days everyone wore white smock for the judging – quite handy to be able to slip it over whatever you were wearing!

The Royal Dairy Show at Olympia saw an entry of 74 Ayrshires, 13 fewer than the previous year!

Milk records were shattered by Averham Crummie, an 8 year old, sired by Preston Special Gift. In the milking trials she produced a new record for the amount of milk produced in 24 hours. Not only did she give 135.5lbs milk in 24 hours, she went on to beat this 2 days later with a total of 144lbs without any additional feeding!

She won the Inter-Breed Barnham Cup for the greatest number of points in the milking trials, along with the Finnish Ayrshire Society Trophy for the greatest weight of butter-fat.

Inspection classes were judged by Mr William Blair. The Inspection Championship was won by six year old Elsworth Ising Lass, by Beauchamps Danny Boy. It is interesting to note that the Reserve Champion was the first prize “dehorned ‘’ 4 year old Mackays’s Ruby 9th. Both Champion and Reserve Champion were being shown for the first time.

For the eighth year in a row, the Ayrshire Team of six cows retained their unbeaten record in the Inter-Breed Competition for the Coronation Trophy. Members of the team were Wheatrig Lady Shamrock, Snowshill Rose Bed, Mackay’s Ruby 9th, East Raws Primula 7th, Barton Stud’s Griselda and Woodcockfauld Fairy 3rd.

Representing the breed for the Bledisloe Trophy were Snowshill Nona, Snowshill Rose Bed, Snowshill Quakress, Marton Moor Elaine 6th, Mackay’s Hawthorn and Snowshill Alice. Although the team finished in reserve position overall, they were triumphant on inspection, being awarded maximum points, thus winning the Bledisloe Shield.

A lot has changed since 1960 .... if we look back at the old farms and farming methods, we can see that the dear old Ayrshire cow was hardy, willing to do her job without any of today’s luxuries and a pleasure to the eye.

LOOKING BACKBreeder Linda Batty, shares, in a new feature Breeder Comment, a nostalgic look back at the 1960’s and how the breed was promoted through the showring!

Dumfries was the venue for the 2019 Ayrshire Cattle Society AGM and Conference, based at the Holiday Inn & Easterbrook Hall in the grounds of the Crichton Estate. We could not have wished for such wonderful weather to greet us and remain throughout the Conference.

It was an early start for the Presidents committee on Monday morning before the Council members arrived in Easterbrook Hall for their Council meeting. For those not attending any meetings fun was had trying out bowling with the equipment being kindly provided by Steven Brown.

In a change from the normal agenda, we had our first farm visit before the AGM. This was to Muirside Farm owned by the Cowhill Trust and managed by Stuart Neish. 240 cows are milked at Muirside along with 420 young stock and fattening cattle and 680 Suffolk cross and Mule breeding sheep. Production of the Muirside herd was evident with capacious framed cows currently averaging 32kgs per day with a 9200kgs rolling average.

A much-appreciated lunch was served in the barn before boarding the bus and heading back to Easterbrook Hall for the 2019 AGM.

For those not attending the farm visit a fizzy afternoon tea style lunch was enjoyed followed by a demonstration by Bespoke Feathers. Delegates then got the opportunity to create their own design with Ann Whiteford’s lovely creation being picked out for first prize.

Following the finance and President’s reports it was on to the election of officers. The following officers were unanimously agreed:President Michael Howie (Morwick) NorthumberlandVice President Steve Bailey (Beeline) CheshireJunior Vice President Andrew Broadley (Whitecroft) DerbyshirePast President Keith Davidson (Halmyre) Kirkcudbrightshire

An evening dinner in the Easterbrook Hall was followed by a talk from Hugh McClymont, Crichton Royal Farm Manager. Later that evening we had a quiz which identified not only the most intelligent delegates but also the cheats!

On Tuesday morning, we arrived at Langbarns, the home of Donald Armstrong and his parents Robert and Alison. Langbarns is home to 120 cows and 420 Ewes. The cows are all Pure bloodlines which suited the terrain and the system. Focus is on health traits and good feet and legs. Donald clearly has a passion for Pedigree Ayrshires following the recent commencement of recording his herd and he has a great foundation to build from. Keith Davidson had arranged with some of our hosts to hold a stock judging class. The master judge was to remain anonymous until the last evening.

We then moved onto Halmyre, home of the outgoing President Keith Davidson, his wife Jane and family. Another class of stock judging was held here as well as a demonstration from some of our sponsors, Cow Alert and a talk from Advanced Nutrition. We were treated to another great lunch and sample of ice cream from the Davidsons family run business Glen Urr Ice Cream. The Halmyre conference sale lot, Halmyre Urr Louise 363 was paraded in front of the delegates. A walk among the cows identified the Halmyre herd as being powerful strong cows in great condition.

A short Journey to Crofthead farm saw Mark Callander show us around his dairy unit which is part of a 2000 acre estate. The farm also accommodates Solar Panels, wind turbines and an anaerobic digester with a biogas plant currently under construction. 1100 Red and White cows are in production here with good production and a very impressive calving interval. The sheer scale of the operation had visitors in awe of Marks vision.

The alternative programme started the day with a visit to Ellisland Farm where an interested tour and insight into poet Robert Burns was enjoyed. At Halmyre farm, Jane Davidson gave delegates a talk on the ice cream making side of the business then accompanied them on a leisurely afternoon in Castle Douglas.

The evening entertainment following dinner had delegates up dancing the night away with a Ceilidh.

On Wednesday morning we visited Caerlaverock Farm home of the Brown Family. This a very much family run based farm with Ian, Stuart and Steven taking care of all duties. 130 cows are milked here producing average butterfat’s of 4.6% with high Protein also. A simple system in place which suits both man and cow and achieves the margins needed to stay profitable. Steven ran a competition to guess the age of a cow who turned out to be an amazing 23 years old.

Townhead Farm was our next stop. Colin and Lorraine Mair kindly hosted our lunch visit on their immaculate farm. We had two stock judging classes, one from our hosts and local breeder Bryce Sloan from Ryemuir bought along four cows for a second class. One of the consignments for the Conference Sale, Swaites Dilly 12 was also present for delegates to view prior to the sale that evening.

Our last visit of the conference was to the McGarva Families Horseclose Ayrshires. A farm where again all the family are involved in the day to day running. The herd is predominantly grazed as long as possible with little purchased feeds as possible yet still achieves a 7000kgs average at 4.7% butterfat and 3.4% Protein. 150 pedigree sheep also reside at Horseclose. The freshly calved heifers here really impressed visitors along with many quality cows. Horseclose Joanna 6 was to be sold later in the evening at the Conference sale so was also viewed during the visit.

The alternative programme took delegates to the Devil’s Porridge Museum which commemorates HM Factory Gretna, the largest

munitions factory in the world during the First World War and explores the stories of the Solway Military Coast during the Second World War and beyond. The museum uses artefacts, information panels, film and audio, photographs and oral histories to bring the fascinating history of this Border area to life. The last visit of the alternative programme was a visit to Moat Brae, a listed Georgian townhouse and its enchanted land that was acknowledged by JM Barrie as the inspiration behind his legendary story – Peter Pan.

The finale in the evening was dinner in the impressive Crichton Memorial Church. Something that must be seen to be believed for its magnificent structure and interior features. We were entertained by the very talented Claire Hastings, a Scottish folksinger, songwriter and ukulele player based in Glasgow and owner of the prestigious title of BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician in 2015.

After dinner Greirson Dunlop told his amusing tales as a farmer’s son before Glyn Lucas took the microphone for the Conference Sale. Some awards were also presented including the winner of the stock judging, Peter Berresford. Finally, Keith Davidson handed over the Presidents badge to our new President, Michael Howie.

In conclusion we must thank all the organisers, hosts and sponsors of the event along with the tireless efforts of Keith and Jane Davidson for arranging a wonderful few days.

SOUTH AFRICAN ASSIGNMENTFollowing a request from some South African Ayrshire breeders for a Youth member from our organisation to travel to Bloemfontein to prepare cows for their National show, Jamie Keenan volunteered to go and here he speaks of his experience in South Africa.

ACSAMBASSADOR

REPORTThe following day Edmund, Duncan, and I set off on a 9-hour drive through the Karoo down to Cape town. The drive was spectacular from beginning to end. On the following day after a great rest form the long drive the previous day, we visited Table Mountain which looks over all of Cape Town. I can honestly say it was the best sight I have ever seen in my life and I felt extremely grateful to have been able to see it in person. The sights we saw all around Cape Town were unforgettable and if I were rich enough, I would most definitely move there!

On the Monday morning we went to visit Rhodes farm group which was where the Grand Champion from the show stays. The farm was unbelievable and nothing like I had ever seen before. It made a long-lasting impression on me about how farming is done in South Africa which would impress all farmers across the world! We also had a wonderful visit to see the herd of Jan Wessels. We then set off towards our last scenic stop which happened to be the most southern point in the African Cape Agulhas, were the Indian ocean and Atlantic Ocean meet.

The trip was a one in a lifetime experience and I have memories I will keep with me forever along with the friends I have made on the way. This was all made possible by Edmund Els who couldn’t have done enough for me and Duncan. I honestly couldn’t thank him enough for not just giving me the opportunity, but also making it the best trip I will most probably ever be on!

2019 has certainly been a year to remember for me. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work at the National Ayrshire show in Bloemfontein in South Africa, a chance I was not going to turn down. This meant a great deal to me to be given the chance to work abroad as I never had this experience before.

On the 21st of April I began my trip from Dublin airport with my first of three flights to Bloemfontein. On arrival I

met Edmund Els, who funded and looked after me over the next twelve days. He took me to the apartment I was staying in to rest from the long journey. The next day we headed to the show grounds where I met the South African breeders and got to see all the great Ayrshires entered for the show who I would have the pleasure of working with. It was thunder and lightening with real heavy rain the first two days which had me worried because all I had packed with me was shorts! Luckily enough it was great weather from then on.

I started my day on Wednesday clipping cows and calves for Edmund Els who had some lovely Forever Schoon Predator and Sandyford Supreme Ayrshires. I also clipped some lovely animals for Kevin Lang who had some lovely stylish Palmyra Tri Star Burdette daughters. That night I went out for a meal with all the exhibitors who all made me feel so welcome. It took some of them a while to adjust to my accent, but in their defence, everyone struggles with it!

The next day was the start of the show with the calves being judged at 5 pm, which was a great time for me as I wasn’t rushed in my clipping. There were some lovely strong, stylish calves on show, and I was certainly pleased as I clipped the Junior Champion, Grace Valley Burdettes Eva which was owned by Kevin Lang and also the Reserve champion, Rhino Ridge Supremes Wilma 11 owned by Edmund Els. It was a quiet night on Thursday as everyone wanted to be fresh for the business end of the show on Friday. On Friday morning, I got to work early as the show started early. When you’re working with good animals it makes my job easy and it certainly was easy for me. I had more joy as I fitted the Reserve Grand Champion of the show which was another Burdette daughter owned by Kevin Lang. Walter Finlayson’s Raigmore Doreen 35 was Grand Champion. The show was judged by Duncan Hunter who did an excellent job as we all knew he would. I didn’t envy his job as the breeders showed their cattle to the highest standard and had lovely animals that would do well at any show.

After the show the celebrations began. I got to meet more people involved in the South African Ayrshire society who all made me feel so welcome, especially JD Marais and Wickus Van Der Merwe. I certainly got my share of the local food and drinks.

Devon County ShowRobert Adams travelled to Devon to judge this year, and what was to be a great day for the Ayrshire breed! He found his convincing Champion in Gargus Jemima 3 Ex95 4E exhibited by Chris and Connie Creeper. Having won the Interbreed at Cornwall in 2018, Jemima came out in her sixth lactation to win the senior cows, take Breed Champion and go on to win Interbreed Dairy Champion at the Devon County Show.

RUAS Balmoral ShowArdmore Janet 110 Ex94 3E from John and Michael Hunter again took the top honours at the Royal Balmoral show under judge Robin Templeton.

Following her win here last year and at the Winter Fair in December, Janet has certainly dominated the major Northern Ireland shows recently. She was the winner of the Senior cow class, with second place coming from the same herd, Ardmore Orphan 110 who took the overall Reserve Champion.

Christian Keenan took first and second in the heifer in milk classes with Threemile Rusty Burdette and Threemile Miss Whiteford 2 respectively. There were also wins for Robert and Caroline McConnell in the Junior cow class with Beechmount Kathleen 5 and in the cow in calf class with Beechmount Queenie 4.

Royal Highland ShowWhat a show! The breed dominated in numbers yet again with a fantastic turnout of quality animals. Michael Broadley from Derbyshire was this year’s judge. The day commenced with three classes in the Red and White section with top honours of Red and White Champion going to Redsky Ladd Delight Red from Jim and Gilmour Lawrie.

In the Ayrshire ring it was Arthur, Susan, James and David Lawrie who had a day to remember. Their Junior cow Cuthill Towers Highland Bloom VG88 won her class and then went on to take the Ayrshire Grand Champion. They also took the junior Champion with Cuthill Towers Modern Marcy who then went on to be Reserve Interbreed Junior Champion. These results gave them the Premier breeder of the Ayrshire breed for the 2019 show. Reserve Grand Champion was the Ex95 Changue Martha 49 from Mungo Bryson following her win in the Senior cow class. Winner of the Intermediate cows was Bruchag Talent Evelyn from the Lawrie and McAlister families and the maiden heifers were won by Troutbeck Famous Jess 3 from the Mattinson Family.

Great Yorkshire ShowRichard Baynes led the homebred Marleycote Sea Lily 23 VG87 to take the breed championship at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. Sea Lily 23 is in her third lactation and her championship came after taking the win in the Intermediate cow class from judge Peter Berresford. GG Baynes and Sons also won the Junior cow class with Changue Stately Maid 43. Reserve breed Champion was the senior cow winner, Sanderson EI Esther 12 from David and Christine Sanderson. The same exhibitor in partnership with Middle Farm also won the heifer Champion with Middle Julia CTHD.

TECHNICALARTICLE

The importance of good conformation has never been greater. Not only from a farmers point of view, but also the milk buyers and the public awareness.

It is the cow of better type that produces high quantities of quality milk with ease and comfort over a long and trouble free lifetime. The Ayrshire Society’s Type Classification Scheme helps farmers achieve cows of good conformation.Individual type traits are assessed by the classifier and a score is given for Body, Dairy, Mobility and Mammary System before a final score is awarded.

The key benefits of superior graded animals is that they attract higher values than their counterparts. Specific strengths and weaknesses are highlighted

allowing improved corrective breeding decisions to be made. Most importantly from the classification scores and linear evaluations, the figures are calculated to provide the bull proofs, type merit (for sires) and type index for cows. The individual type traits are usually expressed in bar chart form. Classification is the tool that allows breeding decisions to be made within herds and identifies the sires of the next generation, but it depends totally on member participation to achieve these results.

AYRSHIRE CLASSIFICATION GUIDEBreeding the perfect Ayrshire is every breeders ambition. In this technical feature, AYRSHIRE CLASSIFICATION GUIDE clearly illustrated and explained how the classifcation system works. This is produced in association with the National Bovine Data Centre.

Duncan grew up with Ayrshire cows in his blood and has always been a true ambassador of the Ayrshire breed. He took over the farm in September 2001 after his father’s untimely death and 9 years later dispersed the Haresfoot herd to help fund the purchase of the family farm. This dispersal will go down in UK Ayrshire history as one of the most influential of all time. Duncan is a great innovator and with the arrival at that time of social media Duncan jumped onto this and it proved to be a great success bringing in interest from all over the world. Haresfoot breeding has now travelled the world and many herds have had success with offspring of this great herd. The average of the animals sold that day were over £3.000 for the 88 head sold.Duncan’s career began with the Society in 2011 when he was offered a part time role to help John Cochrane with his duties, a role in which he excelled in always bringing new ideas to the table. When John retired in 2014 Duncan took the role on full time which saw him really make his mark on the breed with a striking new show uniform and the innovation of the Young Breeders at the National Show showing cows for breeders who could not attend the show, this soon became the envy of all other Breed Societies. Duncan’s encouragement of the young members has continued throughout his time with the Society and his last day was spent mentoring one of our young members giving her the confidence to give reasons at the society judging seminar.Duncan’s enthusiasm, ability to communicate with all sorts of people along with his diplomaticbut friendly character has played an influential part to the growth and success of the breed and Society. Duncan is also a respected judge both in the UK and worldwide and has brought an element of change and excitement during his time on the World Federation Committee, he has made many friends all over the world any has always promoted UK Ayrshires at every opportunity.

Duncan is a great organiser and has contributed immensely to the success of many society events. Duncan has worked tirelessly on all things Ayrshire and the staff and members are indebted to him for his contribution and wish him every success for his future endeavours.

DevonThe Devon club held their AGM in March and invited along 2 representatives from the local branch of the Farm Community Network Char-ity. Our retiring president, Ruby Tristram and president -elect, Libby Marnham, presented a cheque for £2,000 raised by the club at auctions held at our annual dinners.

Also in March we put on our own Young Breeders event prior to the National Young Breeders weekend, this was held at Blannicombe by kind permission of Mark Evans and team. Around 10 calves were perfectly presented by the East Church team for clipping and leading by each young member, including a group of 3 under 6’s. Molly Westwood of Panda Holsteins gave her expert attention to each and every young person. Everyone who took part were rewarded with certificates presented by Molly for their hard work and dedication all day. Devon County show soon came around with member competitors from around the county who were able to show. The highlight went to Chris and Connie Creeper, again taking breed champion with Gargus Jemima for the 4th year running, but this year she also laid claim to the interbreed crown too. Congratulations to the Tristar team!

Talking of congratulations...2 weeks later Chris and Connie had another big celebration..they got married! Very best wishes to you both from the Devon Club. Well done to all who did well this year.

In early July a road trip was made by members in a minibus up to Llanelli to visit the Gwynnog herd by kind invitation of Geraint and Sheryl Thomas and family. What a super day we had, with a bit of Queen blaring out of the speakers on the way home to keep our trusty driver, Rob Cornish entertained! A bit closer to home at the of the July, members made a visit to Hilltown Ayrshire’s by kind invitation of the Nicholls family. A very hot tour of the cows on a bale trailer, in beautiful weather, was very much enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Malcolm, Mervyn and Mark for all the herd information and all the hard work of the whole family to make the viewing of young-stock most enjoyable. Now members will be knuckling down to the local shows be-fore preparing for the herds competition.
