As I walk around the school I am constantly reminded of the many precious young lives entrusted to our care and I rejoice at the greetings students offer staff and their peers. Imagine the excitement of going into a new year level, and the many smiling faces with only an occasional tear when separation occurs from our little Kindergarten students. I really look forward to a year of hard work guided by Gods spirit to serve you our parents our students and staff. host Families desperately needed

It was great to see all of the students back at school on Tuesday this week. I hope all BDC families and friends enjoyed the summer break and now ready to return to a more regular routine. We welcomed 82 new students into the Secondary school and I trust that you have all felt welcomed into the College Community. Please remember that communicating issues is extremely important. We would like to try and assist wherever possible, so the important contacts in Secondary to remember are the Year Coordinators, Assistant Year Coordinators and the House Tutors.

Please ensure that the College has your most updated email address. This is to ensure that you receive the College Newsletter link and notices from the College. We are attempting to cut back on “snail mail” and send letters and notices out by using email. If you know of a friend who has students at the College and they are not receiving the Newsletter, please let them know that they can email [email protected] to update their details.

I would like to welcome all parents of Middle school children to some meet and greet evenings we are hosting this term. For Year 7 parents there is a meet and greet, followed by a camp information session on Thursday 16 February. For Year 8 and 9 parents there is a meet and greet, followed by the P&F Welcome on Thursday 9 February. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

During the holidays three of our Year 9 students went to Japan to take part in the sister city exchange program between Coffs Harbour and Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Clare Brauer, Naomi Howe, Alexander Parker and Miss Wyndham arrived in Tokyo on 9 December and spent two days sightseeing in Japan’s amazing capital city before heading south on the bullet train to Sasebo.

Welcomed warmly by their host families and by all the students at Yamazumi Middle School, our three students spent a busy and exciting week going to classes, playing sports, smashing rice and rolling the paste to make mochi cakes, and sightseeing around Sasebo and Nagasaki. To finish their trip, they spent two days in the old capital of Kyoto before flying home. Clare, Naomi and Alex are all to be congratulated for the superb job they did in representing their school and their country.

Due to the long summer break and the fast-approaching arrival date of our group from Lyon, France, we are now in desperate need of kind host families. If you can host a French student from 9-14 February please contact Miss Wyndham in Languages as soon as possible: [email protected] Thank you!

Percival is Year 8 Coordinator and is assisted by Louie Van Dartel. Jamie Murgatroyd is Year 9 Coordinator and is ably assisted by Amy Place. These people travel the Pastoral Care journey with students for three years before handing them over the Senior School Coordinators, who again work with students for the following three years. This year Mick Klipin is Year 10 Coordinator and is assisted by Ketrien Meulenbroeks, Drew Kadwell is Year 11 Coordinator with Alison Hay as Assistant Coordinator, while Sue O’Connor is Year 12 Coordinator ably assisted by Paul Driscoll. All students in the secondary are also cared for by their tutors who will travel with them throughout their six years of secondary schooling.

So you see, we have a very strong team of carers for all the students at BDC and we believe that Pastoral Care is core business at the College. To support us all we also have three wonderful counsellors; Tony Horan, Jane Mosco and Saskia Klop, and Marion Tanfield is our Chaplain, while David Morgan is the Assistant Chaplain.

If you have any concerns about you child settling in, or if there are any issues you need to discuss so we can support your children, please feel free to contact any of us, either via email via the staff contacts page or by phoning for a conversation or an interview time. We are all here to support you all, so please make yourselves known to us.

The first week of sport for Years 7-10 will start on 6 February with House Sport. This will be at different beach venues for each year group. Students will need to wear full sports uniform but can change into swimmers at recess in case they get wet. They will also need to bring a towel.

Sport Choices are listed on the sport notice board and if they wish to change sports they can get a form from the PE office. They have until the end of week 3 to do this. There will be no changes after this time.

Enjoy the weather while it doesn’t rain.

Welcome back to BDC Primary to all our students and families. A special welcome goes to the families of the 51 new students in Years 1-6 and the 57 new Kindergarten students. I encourage our new and existing parents to join us at 6pm on Thursday 9 February for our annual P&F Welcome function. The Primary Parent Information session is scheduled for 5pm on Wednesday 15 February.

I am sure by now you have heard the dreadfully sad news of the passing of Mrs Helen Campbell, mother of Alex and Amy. We will of course be doing all we can to support the girls as they work through this extremely difficult period. Rev. Marion is the person to contact if you would like to show your support for the family in a practical way: [email protected]

We welcome to the Primary School four new class teachers. Mrs Sarah Gale will teach 1G, Mrs Patricia Bordignon is teaching 2B, Mrs Wendy Phillips has 4P and Mr Mark Freeman is responsible for 6F. Careers neWsYear 10 – The 2012 Work Experience dates are from June 12-15, 2012.The Parent/Student and Employer Work Experience Handbooks can be accessed on the Bishop Druit College Website via this link. Hard copies will be distributed to students in Careers classes in week 2.

We thank Marcel Eggers de Mink for sharing a recent Career building experience. He traveled to Sydney and attended the 2012 UNSW Minerals Summer School from 9 - 12 January, hosted by the School of Mining Engineering at UNSW. He stayed in a resort in the Hunter Valley and traveled daily to different mining sights, open cut and underground. Marcel thoroughly enjoyed this experience and is keeping in contact with almost everyone from the summer school. He highly recommends this program to anyone who has the slightest interest in mining engineering or even engineering itself.

Congratulations to Brody Moran (Year 11) for securing a school based apprenticeship at K’Pane bakery.

Junior primary and learning support

senior primary and talent deVelopment

At BDC, Junior Primary consists of Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. As Junior Primary Coordinator, it is my job to oversee the successful delivery of educational and pastoral care programs by providing support to both students and staff. This role incorporates a number of specific duties that relate to curriculum, pastoral care, teacher support, administration and the coordination of special events involving Junior Primary students. As a member of the Primary Leadership Team, I work collaboratively with my colleagues in the pursuit of these goals.

This year I am also the Learning Support teacher and therefore a member of the Primary Learning Resource Centre (LRC) team. We support teachers K-6, in the implementation of educational programs, to meet the varying needs of individual students. Each child is unique so we aim to respond to each child as an individual recognising difference in abilities, learning styles and interests. We aim to focus on how children develop and learn to meet their cognitive, social, emotional and physical needs.

I would like to advise all parents to take an active role in the education of their children. Open communication and contact between school and parents are very important so I would like to strongly encourage you to contact your child’s class teacher with any questions or concerns you may have. Together we can ensure a happy, safe and fulfilling learning experience for your children at BDC.

There was a tangible air of excitement amongst the Senior Primary students on Monday. What a great start to the school year! This year I will continue in the role of Senior Primary Coordinator with responsibility for Years 3 - 6. In addition, I have taken on the new role of Talent Development Teacher. In this role I will be providing enrichment opportunities for selected students in Senior Primary in the areas of Mathematics and English. The school policy emphasises the importance of past performance in the process of selecting students for subject specific enrichment programs, and this will form the basis for selecting the Talent Development groups in Senior Primary. In addition, a Creative Thinkers group will be established for students who have demonstrated potential but have not been able to consistently realise their potential in the classroom. These students will be identified through a teacher nomination process, and the group will be taught by Mrs Sue Paff. I will also provide assistance in programming to ensure provision for talent development in all Primary classes. The College’s Talent Development guidelines can be viewed under the Policies section of the College website. Any parent who would like their child to be considered for inclusion in one or more of these groups, should return the parent nomination form which is available on the website, to me by Friday 10 February.

Karen CurtinJunior Primary Coordinator

Patrick GalvinSenior Primary Coordinator

uniFormI commend the students on their excellent start to the year in regards to uniform. The uniform policy is clearly set out on page 26 of the Student Diary and will be enforced in the Primary School. You will be notified of infringements of the Uniform Policy through your child’s diary and the Coordinators will be in contact with you personally in the case of repeated breaches. Thank you in advance for supporting us in this matter.

st. george’s rugby tour – (From VanCouVer)

sWimming CarniVals

Welcome to a new year of basketball. Mrs Hilton is coordinating basketball across the College this year. Registration forms can be found under ‘Our Community’ on the College website. Any students wishing to play in the CHBA 2012 Primary or Secondary competitions need to have these registration forms filled out and returned to Mrs Hilton by Tuesday 7 February. Places in teams cannot be guaranteed if registration forms are late. There will be a box placed in the library foyer for Secondary registration forms, and Primary students can place them in the sport draw in the Primary Office. Forms can also be emailed directly to Mrs Hilton at [email protected].

Competition commences on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 February with grading games for the first two weeks. I need coaches and managers for all teams. Any team without a coach and/or manager will not be entered into the competition. Managers for Secondary teams are required to be an adult who will attend the games.

Training will be held at Sportz Central, Bray St on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 4-5pm. Limited courts are available and a roster may need to be set up on some days. Training will commence on Monday 20 February.

The stadium bus will be available and will run on training days (Mon, Tues, Wed) at a cost of $4 per week. If you wish to use this service please indicate on the registration form, as students will be required to have a bus pass. Students without a pass will not be permitted on the bus.

I’m looking forward to an exciting year in basketball.

We will require families to billet players from the 1st and 2nd XV’s Rugby teams on 25-27 March. This tour provides a great opportunity for our players to experience international competition and support from families is critical to the continuation of such tours. Any families who can assist are encouraged to contact Mr Webber [email protected] for further details.

The Secondary School carnival will be held on Monday 13 February at Coffs Harbour Memorial Swimming Pool. The format will be the same as last year, and will see competitive / serious swimmers compete in the morning session, followed by the whole school inter-house competition in the afternoon.

All students should come to school as normal on the day and attend tutor groups for roll marking. The competitive swimmers will be bused to the pool at 9.00am, whilst the inter-house swimmers will remain at school for normal morning lessons. They will then leave by bus to the pool at 12.30pm. All students will be bused back to the school at the completion of the carnival, at 2.30pm.

This year, in an attempt to provide greater accuracy and to improve event management, we will be using a semi-automatic timing system for all 50m events.

With the large number of events and the constraint of time, the 200m IM will be run prior to the commencement of the normal carnival and students competing in this event will need to arrange for parents to take them directly to the pool at 8.30 am, ready for a 9.00am start.

Please note: All serious swimmers must have nominated their events to Mr Webber by Wednesday 8 February. No entries will be accepted after this date.

Any students with alternate transport arrangements must bring a signed note from home, and hand it to tutors before the event. Further details and instructions to students will be forthcoming.

The Senior Primary carnival will be held on Tuesday 14 February at Coffs Harbour. Parents are welcome to attend. This year timing will be conducted with a touch pad timing system, which means students need to nominate for events in the coming week. Students wishing to compete in 50m butterfly and the 200m individual medleys have to be actively training in these events at squad level. These events will be first on the program and will start before the bus arrives, so alternative transport will have to be arranged by parents.

The Junior Primary carnival will be held on Friday 17 February at Sawtell Swim Centre from 9.30 – 12pm. Parents are welcome to attend and often participate in this carnival. The carnival is a fun filled morning of water and land based activities. This is a non-competitive carnival with the focus on ‘having fun’.
