A Presidncia do Governo Regional dos Aores, atravs da Direco Regionalda Cultura, e no mbito das actividades do Museu Carlos Machado,acolhe a presente exposio, em parceria com a Fundao Luso--Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD), com o intuito de dara conhecer, difundir e permitir o acesso do maior nmero de pessoass expresses artsticas contemporneas.

De um acervo de mais de 900 obras de arte, de cerca de meia centena deartistas contemporneos portugueses, englobando diversas tc-nicas e formatos, mas com preponderncia para o desenho, foramseleccionadas obras de Jos Pedro Croft, Ana Hatherly ou AntnioSena, entre outros, naquela que constitui uma mostra apurada dastendncias mais recentes da arte portuguesa, ao mesmo tempo quese assume como um estmulo importante para os hbitos de fruiocultural do pblico micaelense.

, pois, com agrado, que acolhemos esta exposio produzida pela FundaoLuso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento, que se aproxima doGoverno dos Aores com a inteno comum de promover manifes-taes artsticas que revelem as virtualidades da mudana, dainovao e da diversidade culturais.

The Presidency of the Azorean Regional Government welcomes, through itsCultural Department and as part of the activities of the CarlosMachado Museum, the present exhibition, organised in partnershipwith Fundao Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD)with the intention of divulging contemporary artistic expressions, byallowing as many people as possible to contact with them.

Out of a collection that comprises over 900 works by about 50 contemporaryPortuguese artists, in many different techniques and forms, thoughwith the preponderance of drawing, a selection was made of piecesby Jos Pedro Croft, Ana Hatherly or Antnio Sena, among others,to create what is both a refined showcase of the most recent trendsin Portuguese art and an important stimulus to the cultural habitsof the So Miguel public.

It is thus with great pleasure that we host this exhibition, an initiative ofFLAD, which here joins forces with the Azorean Government in thecommon intent of promoting artistic events that will display everyvirtuality of cultural change, innovation and diversity.

A Fundao Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD) inicia comesta exposio e catlogo um conjunto de aces destinadas a per-mitir pr o pblico aoriano das diversas ilhas em contacto com asua coleco de artistas portugueses das ltimas dcadas do sc. XXe j deste sculo.

Muito embora a reproduo fotogrfica tenha divulgado as obras de arte demodo a que praticamente todas as pessoas possam ter um acessofcil a imagens destas, nada substitui verdadeiramente o contactovisual directo, a emoo esttica e o processo intelectual de com-preenso que o dilogo com o original proporciona.

Aprecia-se a arte cultivando a pouco e pouco e tornando mais complexos eprofundos a nossa percepo e o nosso sentido esttico.

O desenvolvimento das sociedades assenta basicamente na capacidade daspessoas que as integram, e esta no tem apenas, nem sequer sobre-tudo, uma vertente econmica. O valor operacional do ser humanoresulta da globalidade e diversidade das suas potencialidades e domodo como as concretiza. A cultura e a arte so reconhecidamentenecessrias para que a pessoa humana possa usar bem a sua li-berdade criadora, mas constituem igualmente condies para queas sociedades cresam espiritual e materialmente. No por acasoque as sociedades mais ricas, em termos de rendimento per capita, sotambm as com maior diversificao e pujana cultural e cientfica.

Parece assim justo e de acordo com a misso da Fundao Luso-Americanaque as Regies Autnomas sejam objecto de um esforo de dis-criminao positiva, exigido pela solidariedade do todo nacionalportugus, e que contribua para nelas corrigir, como alis noutraszonas desfavorecidas do Continente, as assimetrias culturais queregistam.

Esta a razo de ser da iniciativa que agora comea.

This exhibition and catalogue mark the beginning of a series of actions byFundao Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD), aimedat presenting the Azorean public with several opportunities for contactwith that institutions collection of Portuguese art from recent decades,up to and including the present century.

Even though photographic reproduction has divulged works of art to such apoint that basically everyone now may contact them in that form,nothing truly substitutes the direct visual contact, aesthetic emotionand intellectual understanding ensured by a dialogue with theoriginals.

The appreciation of works of art slowly cultivates and deepens our perceptionand artistic sense.

The development of societies depends basically on the capacities of their people,which need not be entirely, or even mostly, connected to economicfactors. The operational value of human beings is the result of howencompassing and diverse their potentialities are, and of how muchthey are fulfilled. Culture and art are quite necessary for humans tomake good use of their creative freedom, and they are also conditionsfor the spiritual and material growth of societies. It is no coincidencethat the richest societies, in terms of per capita income, are thosewho boast greater cultural and scientific variety and vitality.

It is thus appropriate and fitting that Fundao Luso-Americana has chosenthe Autonomous Regions to be the object of an effort of positivediscrimination, demanded indeed by solidarity among the wholePortuguese territory, and which will contribute towards correctingtheir cultural asymmetries, as it has already done in other lessprivileged regions of the Continent.

Such is the raison dtre of the present initiative.

com alegria e especial satisfao que o Museu Carlos Machado recebepela primeira vez uma exposio de arte, organizada pela Fun-dao Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento. Verdadeiro hlitoAtlntico.

A mostra, patente ao pblico no Ncleo de Arte Sacra, antiga Igreja doColgio dos Jesutas em Ponta Delgada, rene obras em escultura,pintura e desenho de artistas portugueses que, na ascenso doflego novo, tm contribudo para o amadurecimento da Arte con-tempornea em Portugal e a sua afirmao em terras de outras gran-des margens: Helena Almeida, Jos Pedro Croft, Ana Hatherly,Antnio Sena e Pedro Sousa Vieira.

Na trajectria da plasticidade e da sacralidade do espao, as peas emexposio, na sua epifnica singularidade, inauguraro a surpresae at mesmo o grito do espanto dos visitantes. Estamos peranteartistas de uma imensa fecundidade criativa e assombro.

Este acontecimento, de grande alcance cultural para as Gentes dos Aores,chama a ateno para que, na urgncia do tempo, a arte, na suaautenticidade, configura a solidariedade para o desenvolvimentodos Povos.

Estamos regozijados com a excelncia das obras na extenso do percursoexpositivo, revelando os traos da complexidade de uma arte comalma. Deste mar largo, queremos celebrar todo o nosso agradeci-mento pela cooperao da FLAD com o Museu Carlos Machado, etambm gostaramos de registar digno reconhecimento ao comis-srio desta exposio pelo engenho e inteligncia realados naorganizao deste magnfico evento, que fala da vitalidade da artecontempornea em Portugal.
