Cardboard Boat Race On Tuesday, January 27th, grade 7 and 8 students from Our Lady of Fatima, St. Henry and St. Joachim Catholic Schools participated in the
Skills Canada Cardboard Boat Races at Swansea Public School. Two teams of 4 from each school designed and constructed a boat to participate in both a speed and weight challenge in a swimming pool. Students were given 2 sheets of cardboard, 2 rolls of duct tape, contact cement and 2 hours of building time. Teams were judged on safety, cleanliness, planning, design, quality of construction, visual appeal, teamwork, knowledge of the skilled trades, speed and weight capacity. The six TCDSB teams performed extremely well amidst tough competition from schools across the GTA. In particular, our teams from Our Lady of Fatima excelled in separate events; in the speed challenge team 1 was able to race across the pool in a blistering 44 seconds, team 2 showed its strength in the weight challenge supporting 172 pounds for 90 seconds. St. Henry was able to complete the speed challenge in a mere 37 seconds. St. Joachim’s team exhibited their creative talents and flair for design with their boat stabilized by pontoons; it caught the eye of the judges. Overall it was an extremely successful day for all teams involved. We are looking forward to participating next year.

Mother Teresa hosts elementary boys basketball tourney Event set for Friday at Scarborough school By ERIC HEINO Insidetoronto.com January 28, 2009 4:49 PM The future stars of Scarborough's basketball scene are going to be taking it to the courts this Friday, Jan. 30. Sixteen teams are scheduled to participate in the third annual Mother Teresa Elementary School Tournament, the largest turnout to date. Both public and Catholic schools have entered squads to compete. 'We are expanding a little bit and we're happy to have some public schools involved this year," said Bob Clement, one of the organizers from Mother Teresa. "It's never been held on this large of a basis in the past." Clement was a teacher and coach in the Toronto Catholic school system for more than 30 years before he retired. Even though he is no longer an employee of the school, he has remained a coach at Mother Teresa for the last decade.
Now almost 65 years old and living in Pickering, Clement relishes the chance to have his consistently high-ranking team compete against skilled competition. To accommodate schools that may not devote so much energy to their basketball programs, the tournament has been split into two divisions, based on skill level. "We have an A level and a double A level this year to make sure that everyone is having fun and nobody gets blown-out," said Clement.
The teams are comprised of grade seven and eight boys. The tournament is funded and organized entirely by the basketball program at Mother Teresa. "It's strictly done within our program and we are basically doing it on our own," said Clement. Each team pays a $25 entry fee, but that doesn't cover the costs of paying referees and other expenses. That isn't too much of a problem though, because Mother Teresa ends up making enough money at other tournaments to support this one.
"We basically do it to promote our program," said Clement. "Hopefully some of the good players on other teams will see how serious we are and want to play for us." After the tournament is wrapped up, awards will be given to team MVPs, one tournament MVP and gold, silver and bronze team medals for each division.
