Bibliography

Note: I would point out that the bibliography is not an exhaustive, or even partially comprehensive, survey of the field. That would have required a volume as extensive as the text of the present one. It is simply a list of the works extensively alluded to, or directly quoted, in the text, in the language and edition referred to in the footnote (generally the original French, but sometimes, for reasons of availability or convenience, an English translation).

My practice has been, with essays that form part of a larger volume, simply to refer to the general title when all the essays are by the same contributor (thus, Althusser's 'Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses' is given page references from Lenin and Philosophy, the collection of which it forms part), but to indicate the author and title of an individual essay when it is included in an anthology (as with the Balibar and Macherey piece, 'On literature as an Ideological Form', referred to as cited in the collection Untying the text).

This includes the vast majority of names of people mentioned in the text, with the exception on the one hand of fictional characters, on the other of 'Marx' and 'Marxism', which unsurprisingly recur so often as virtually to figure as passim in the entire book. Movements or ideologies and those after whom they are named (e.g. 'Lenin' and 'Leninism') are conflated into a single entry. Certain political parties, publications, or other key events and institutions mentioned in the text are also selectively listed (thus, the PCF, Tel Que/, and the May events will be found here).
