VALUE PROPOSITION JalanJalan Gelandangan (“JJG”) believes that the homeless have skillsets that can be harnessed to generate sustainable income. Taking advantage of their understanding of the slum areas and situations in urban Malaysia, JJG determined that the homeless can work as slumtour guides on a parttime basis and earn additional income to improve their livelihoods. To facilitate this job opportunity for the urban homeless, the organization provides them with comprehensive support, from training soft skills (i.e. public speaking, sales and selfesteem enhancement) to giving out free food and assistance with housing. Mission: To combat social injustice by empowering and strengthening the homeless and training them to become entrepreneur Objectives: To reduce or eliminate homelessness; to create job opportunities; to give hope and a second chance; to nurture talents and skills PROBLEM STATEMENT According to a newspaper report, about 90% of urban homeless in Malaysia have jobs. Majority of them are employed in laborious, lowlevel positions such as security, kitchen help or sales. The homeless encounter many challenges that keep them on the streets. Their employment typically does not provide sufficient income and stability to afford permanent shelter. Limited skills also hinder their efforts to find a living wage. BUSINESS MODEL JJG works closely with the homeless to ensure they have the skill sets and confidence to be tour guides. The organization reaches out to the homeless by giving out flyers on the streets. Then JJG conducts an interview with them to assess their potential and subsequently provides extensive softskill training to suitable candidates. Once the homeless become qualified tour guides, JJG coordinates tour groups to help them earn regular income. In addition, JJG also conducts various advocacy activities to raise awareness among the public and tourists about the slum tours and the capabilities of the homeless. By providing an opportunity for the homeless to acquire employable skills and earn decent income, JJG creates lasting impact on the livelihoods of the urban homeless and their family. Moreover, the selfesteem enhancement component in JJG’s training enables homeless participants to gain more confidence in themselves. These efforts open up more opportunities for them to discover personal talents and reintegrate in their communities in a dignified manner. 5 THE BOTTOM LINE IMPACT HIGHLIGHTS TO DATE (2015 ACTUALS) Urban homeless participated in JJG’s training and became guides for JJG’s homeless walking tours 19 RM 4,965 Volunteers and tourists expressed increased awareness in homeless issues Social Value created (net) JJG’s founder, Effuan Abdul Wahab, providing direct training the homeless relevant skills for walking tours

VALUE  PROPOSITION  Jalan-‐Jalan  Gelandangan  (“JJG”)  believes  that  the  homeless  have  skillsets  that  can  be  harnessed  to  generate  sustainable  income.  Taking  advantage  of  their  understanding  of  the  slum  areas  and  situations  in  urban  Malaysia,  JJG  determined  that  the  homeless  can  work  as  slum-‐tour  guides  on  a  part-‐time  basis  and  earn  additional  income  to  improve  their  livelihoods.  To  facilitate  this  job  opportunity  for  the  urban  homeless,  the  organization  provides  them  with  comprehensive  support,  from  training  soft  skills  (i.e.  public  speaking,  sales  and  self-‐esteem  enhancement)  to  giving  out  free  food  and  assistance  with  housing.

Majority  of  them  are  employed  in  laborious,  low-‐level  positions  such  as  security,  kitchen  help  or  sales.

Then  JJG  conducts  an  interview  with  them  to  assess  their  potential  and  subsequently  provides  extensive  soft-‐skill  training  to  suitable  candidates. Moreover,  the  self-‐esteem  enhancement  component  in  JJG’s  training  enables  homeless  participants  to  gain  more  confidence  in  themselves.  These  efforts  open  up  more  opportunities  for  them  to  discover  personal  talents  and  reintegrate  in  their  communities  in  a  dignified  manner.
