Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is the aid agency of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ Conference, established to promote charity through justice, peace and development. Caritas is the Latin word for love. We take this to mean ‘love in action’, as we work for a world free of poverty and injustice, through community development, advocacy, education and emergency relief.

We are inspired by Scripture and guided by Catholic social teaching, which recognises that each of us is a gift from God and each of us is loved.

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand belongs to an international network called Caritas Internationalis, a group of over 165 Catholic aid, development and social justice agencies working across 200 countries and territories. This network is one of the largest humanitarian confederations in the world, working with all people, regardless of religion, gender or ethnicity.

Caritas Challenge is an annual nationwide event which offers New Zealand youth the opportunity to stand in solidarity with those living in poverty and injustice. It offers hands-on experiences that are fun and informative! The outcome is that groups raise awareness and funds to improve the lives of the most vulnerable through Caritas development projects.

Caritas Challenge 2016 focuses on Cambodia. More than 40 years ago, Cambodia experienced mass genocide, torture and religious persecution as a result of the harsh regime, the Khmer Rouge, which ruled the country for four years. Many people lost their loved ones to the cruelty of this regime and are

still suffering as a consequence. Loss of land, human rights issues and economic instability contribute to the social injustice and poverty many Cambodians face today. However, the Cambodian people have worked hard to rebuild their lives and adapt to new ways of sustaining livelihoods. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is assisting communities in rural areas of Cambodia to ensure they have sustainable access to food and water supplies, as well as providing opportunities for a regular income.

We invite you to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Cambodia for the Caritas Challenge!

THE CHALLENGES NGA- WEROThere are four Caritas Challenge themes you can choose from for your Challenge activity: Move It, Live It, Sweat It, and Stop It. You may decide on one specific theme, combine elements of each or design your own unique Challenge.

The Move It Challenge focuses on understanding how difficulty in accessing basic needs contributes to poverty. It highlights the plight of people who have to travel long distances to access basic needs like water, food, safety, healthcare and education.

WHAT CAN I DO?Walk, run, swim, cycle or play a sport for the duration of your Caritas Challenge. Experience what travelling long distances to access basic necessities feels like by

carrying large buckets of water. Seek sponsorship for the number of laps you complete, distance you travel or number of goals you score.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING PRINCIPLE Preferential protection of the poor and vulnerable

The needs of the poor and vulnerable must be put first. We need to find ways to help those who are experiencing poverty, danger or illness. We must protect them as part of our human family.

MOVE IT ME NEKEGO THE DISTANCE

The Live It Challenge provides an opportunity to personally experience what it might be like to be homeless, live in a slum or a make-shift shelter after a natural disaster. Experience what living without a home feels like and be in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable.

WHAT CAN I DO?Build a temporary shelter from cardboard, newspaper and tarpaulins and sleep in it overnight. Charge your participants ‘rent’ to sleep in their shelter.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING PRINCIPLE SOLIDARITY

Solidarity is about recognising others as our brothers and sisters through our connected humanity. We need to stand alongside them in support of each other, especially with those facing hardship, regardless of race, ethnicity or gender and wherever they may be in the world.

LIVE IT ME WHAKAORAEXPERIENCE LIFE IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES

8

Page 9: 1 DAY OF DIFFERENCE FOR A LIFETIME OF CHANGE Info Pack 2016 Web... · fun and informative! ... or using freedom of speech. Experience hardship like the world’s poor endure ... suffer

The Sweat It Challenge invites you to stand in solidarity with the millions of workers, including children, who are forced into sweatshops around the world. Poverty forces many to sell their labour for very little pay in appalling conditions. Often sweatshops are unsafe, dangerous and unjust. Learn about where your clothes come from and what conditions they were made in. Did the person who made your jersey get a fair wage?

WHAT CAN I DO?Work in shifts over 24 hours, making items that help meet the needs of others or that you can sell in your community.

Experience the physically demanding conditions that many young people endure daily just to survive.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING PRINCIPLE HUMAN DIGNITY

Every person is unique and made in God’s image, which means every person has an innate human dignity - te tapu o te tangata - that no one can take away. Every person has mana and is worthy of our respect.

SWEAT IT ME WHAKAPAU WERAWERAWORK UNDER DEMANDING CONDITIONS

Many people are suffering the consequences of climate change through the loss of food crops and land, a changing climate and an increase in extreme weather events. The poor are hurt the most by climate change. Pope Francis has said we all must work together to protect the environment. Do your bit for the environment and STOP wasting electricity, water and food. STOP using plastic, and START recycling!

WHAT CAN I DO?Give up something for 24 hours that you take for granted each day. Stop using electricity, technology, eating some foods or using freedom of speech. Experience

hardship like the world’s poor endure daily. Do something positive for the environment instead: plant some trees, start up a compost bin or pick up some rubbish.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING PRINCIPLE STEWARDSHIP

We are kaitiaki - guardians of the earth. Exercising stewardship is caring for the gifts God has given us, including the environment, our own personal talents and other resources. We must care for the earth so that all people who come after us can enjoy its bounty as their home too. We need to share the water and food from this earth with the whole human family.

STOP IT ME KA- TIGIVE SOMETHING UP

• Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia just above the equator

• Three neighbouring countries are Thailand, Laos & Vietnam

• Low-lying plains stretch across most of the land

• Around 30 per cent of land is used for agriculture

• Over 50 per cent is enclosed by tropical rainforests

• Dominant features including: Tonle Sap (the Great Lake), the Mekong River, the Cardamom Mountains, and the Dangrek Mountains

• Two very different seasons: wet and dry

• Monsoon rains occur between May and November and result in widespread flooding

• The dry season between December and April leads to occasional droughts

• Overfishing, illegal logging, and strip mining are human-made actions which damage the environment

• Climate change has led to the timing and intensity of seasons changing annually

• Soil erosion is one such climate change-related issue

THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

CHALLENGES FOR CAMBODIANS

• Approximately 3 million Cambodians are living on less than $1.50 per day

• Over one third of children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition

• Bacterial diarrhoea and typhoid are caused by drinking unclean water

• Thousands of landmine deaths and disabilities have occurred since the time of the Khmer Rouge

• In 2013, the number of people living with HIV/Aids in Cambodia was 75,200

• Cambodia is nominally self-sufficient in rice production

• Other common crops include corn, cassava, beans, cucumber and cashew nuts

• The majority of Cambodians rely on agriculture for their livelihoods

• Food security is a problem due to a number of factors

• Poor quality agricultural resources (seeds and equipment) are barriers to production

• Extreme weather events such as droughts and floods can be devastating

• Animal diseases (such as bird flu) can cause widespread loss

Page 15: 1 DAY OF DIFFERENCE FOR A LIFETIME OF CHANGE Info Pack 2016 Web... · fun and informative! ... or using freedom of speech. Experience hardship like the world’s poor endure ... suffer

FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS, CARITAS HAS WORKED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DPA TO HELP AND SUPPORT SOME OF THE POOREST AND MOST MARGINALISED PEOPLE IN CAMBODIA - PARTICULARLY INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WHO ARE SUBSISTENCE FARMERS.

During the last three years, with support from the New Zealand Government, we have helped poor farmers grow enough food to feed their families and have a surplus that they can sell for income.

We have helped some of these farmers to form cooperatives, and we have provided equipment, such as rice mills, so they can add value to the food they grow and thereby demand a much higher price for it at the market.

We have also been providing wells, water filters and toilets so families have access to safe water and so they can maintain a more hygienic environment.

The people in these communities face many other challenges to their survival and wellbeing. Two of the biggest challenges they face are logging (cutting down trees in the surrounding forests) and land-grabbing (which often goes hand-in-hand with logging) by the government and foreign corporations.

Sometimes these activities are carried out with official sanction (usually after a bribe has been paid), and sometimes they are done illegally (with officials turning a blind eye for the right price).

Either way, the indigenous people of Cambodia miss out on reaping the benefits, and they are directly affected by the destruction of their natural environment. Not only are they losing their land and access to its natural resources, but these activities result in severe disruption to normal weather patterns.

For example, evaporation of water from forests generates rain clouds, which in turn provides water for crops. When thousands of hectares of forest are cleared, this reduces the amount of rainfall in that area, resulting in long periods of drought.

Caritas and DPA are responding to these issues by providing irrigation equipment and teaching techniques like drip irrigation to help farmers cope with the periods of drought they are experiencing.

But this is not enough. We are also helping indigenous communities to gain legal titles to their customary land, so they can oppose these environmentally destructive activities at the highest level. By protecting their surrounding forest, they can at least partially safeguard their area against drought.

Through all these activities, Caritas and DPA are equipping the people in these vulnerable communities to create a more safe, resilient and healthy environment for their families.

WHAT ARE CARITAS AND DPA DOING TOGETHER IN CAMBODIA?

HOW TO PROMOTE YOUR EVENTTHE MAIN PURPOSE OF THE CARITAS CHALLENGE IS TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT SOCIAL INJUSTICE, WHILE INSPIRING AND EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE TO STRIVE FOR POSITIVE CHANGE WITHIN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES.

The Challenge also provides an opportunity to raise funds for vulnerable communities with whom Caritas works. The focus country this year is Cambodia. We recommend that you view our Caritas resources on Cambodia for some background reading, as well as conduct some of your own research to gain an insight into the context of social injustice in Cambodia.

DISPLAY CARITAS CHALLENGE POSTERS (to order email [email protected]) or create your own poster with all the information about your event.

PRESENT AT SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES, parish Mass or community meeting. Or promote your event in the school/parish/youth newsletter and website. Make sure you include this information:

• What is Caritas Challenge? • Why are we doing the Caritas Challenge? • When is our event? • How can you get involved and support us?

CONTACT YOUR LOCAL MEDIA and give them the story about the event you will be running and the people you are supporting through your event.

USE SOCIAL MEDIA! Join Caritas on Facebook and Twitter to connect with other groups in New Zealand and promote the Caritas Challenge through your social media pages. Remember to use the #CaritasChallenge when posting pictures or information!

SEEK SPONSORS FOR YOUR EVENT. Ask local businesses if they are able to sponsor your event by providing food for your participants, sponsoring an advertisement in the paper, covering other costs, or donating towards your fundraising efforts. Not only will this keep your costs down, but they are likely to promote the event on your behalf.

CARITAS CHALLENGE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

LAST YEAR 26 CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS AROUND NEW ZEALAND TOOK PART IN THE CARITAS CHALLENGE. THEIR INVOLVEMENT RANGED FROM THE WHOLE SCHOOL TAKING PART, TO SMALLER GROUPS OF STUDENTS WITHIN THE SCHOOL RUNNING THEIR OWN EVENTS.

As well as raising money for a great cause, schools reported many benefits from participating in the Challenge:

• Increased sense of school spirit.

• The opportunity for the students to demonstrate and develop their leadership skills.

• Challenging students to look beyond their own lives to see the needs of others.

• Teachers often discover that when they become informed, young people can become strong social justice advocates.

Students can learn a lot about the Caritas Challenge focus country. This can be built into an integrated study unit for secondary students, encompassing social sciences, technology, religious education, art and music curriculums. For the past two years, a school in Auckland has delivered the Caritas Challenge as a one-day event for all Year 10 students. Each department of the school, from maths to music, are asked to create material to enhance students’ knowledge of the focus country and the situation there.

STEPS

START ORGANISING:

REGISTER your group for the Caritas Challenge online and we will send you the enrolment materials, including templates of permission, organisation and risk assessment forms. Make sure only one person from your school registers. This can be a teacher or a student leader.

MEET with your student leaders and decide on who your key co-ordinator is. Watch the Caritas Challenge video and look at the Caritas resources on Cambodia, and then discuss the challenges many people are facing in Cambodia.

DECIDE what Challenge(s) you would like to do: Move It, Live It, Sweat It or Stop It. Start to gather your activity ideas.

SET A DATE and allocate tasks to different members of your group so everyone is involved and has a part to play. Tasks that need to be done include promotion of the event, processing of enrolments, overseeing the timetable for the event, etc.

START PROMOTING your event as soon as you have a date! Use social media and the Caritas Challenge posters, order more at [email protected] or create your own unique poster.

• Meet your student leaders regularly to check on organisational progress.

• Check with your parish to see if there is some way you can work with the parish youth group or with interested members of the parish.

• Get in touch with Esther Robinson [email protected] 04 496 1782 and let her know what you are doing and how she can support your Caritas Challenge.

• Tell your local media about your Caritas Challenge plans and see if they can provide some media coverage on why your group is standing in solidarity with the people of Cambodia.

ACTIVITIES COULD INCLUDE:

In 2015, John Paul II College in Rotorua ran a basketball challenge. This was appropriate for the country for which they were raising funds, the Philippines, where basketball is one of the most popular sports. All students were invited to enter the Challenge, and a day was set aside where each year level competed in house groups to shoot as many baskets as possible in a one-period time slot. At the end of the day a game of basketball was held between staff and students. Students were sponsored to participate in the day.

• Consider whether it is realistic for your school to do a full 24-hour Challenge. Many schools choose an eight-hour Challenge, so that it can be completed during the day and doesn’t require a sleep-over.

• Make sure students choosing ‘Stop It’ Challenges involving food have adequate nutrition and hydration to keep them going.

• With any physical activity, take turns during the duration of the Challenge and ensure participants get a chance to have some rest.

• Students may wish to wear a pedometer to track how many kilometres they have done.

• Contact local businesses within your Catholic and wider community to see if they will sponsor you.

• If your Challenge is outdoors, make sure you have a back-up plan for bad weather.

CREATE A CARDBOARD VILLAGE AND LIVE IN IT OVERNIGHT. Use tarpaulins, cardboard and bits of wood.

SLEEP OVERNIGHT IN YOUR SCHOOL HALL WITHOUT ANY USE OF ELECTRICITY, HEATING OR TECHNOLOGY. Experience what it would be like if you were staying in an emergency shelter after a natural disaster.

SPEND SOME TIME IN A CARDBOARD BOX WITH THE ONLY LIGHT AVAILABLE COMING FROM A PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE IN THE ROOF. Check out www.caritas.org.nz/caritas-challenge for an example of how this works in the Philippines.

EXAMPLE: GARIN COLLEGE, NELSON

Students from Garin College showed great dedication and perseverance to the Live It Challenge by building a cardboard city on their school astroturf. Many groups spent over three hours demonstrating their creative and construction talents utilising hundreds of cardboard boxes, tarpaulins,

string and masking tape. In the end, the time and effort making quality structures was well worth it, as rain threatened through the night while students slept in their structures. A real sense of solidarity was achieved for people around the world who live without a permanent shelter.

• Make sure you have plenty of material to build your slum or cardboard city - don’t underestimate the amount of cardboard you will need!

• Newspaper is an excellent insulator - use plenty on the ground, as the chill comes from the ground up, not from the cold air.

• Make sure you recycle your materials after you use them and take care of the environment by tidying up any rubbish.

• Bring plenty of baling twine or string.

• An internal courtyard is an ideal place to hold a Live It challenge, as it provides some shelter and may have large

hooks for you to tie ropes and create a framework for your slum structures.

• An open air context provides authenticity. On the other hand, a dry alternative venue like covered eaves or corridors is a viable alternative.

• Ensure you have activities and games planned during the event to keep your participants entertained.

• Make sure you have plenty of food and water for your participants. You might want to combine a Stop It Challenge and fast for part of the evening in the slum, or eat simply by only having rice.

STUDENTS MAKE SMALL ITEMS SUCH AS ROSARY BEADS OR JEWELLERY IN ‘SWEAT SHOP-LIKE’ CONDITIONS: poor lighting, few breaks, some even working in silence. Items made can be given away or sold to the wider school community.

STUDENTS WORK IN GROUPS TO MAKE BLANKETS by knitting peggy squares and stitching them together.

STUDENTS DO SOME VOLUNTARY WORK IN THE COMMUNITY, which involves students getting a ‘sweat’ up, such as gardening, clearing rubbish or planting trees.

EXAMPLE: SANCTA MARIA COLLEGE, AUCKLAND

Sancta Maria College ran a Sweat It Challenge by creating a temporary sweatshop in their school gymnasium and made rosary beads for 24 hours.  Their DRS contacted a supplier of rosary bead parts. Students were able to take food breaks and toilet breaks, but they weren’t allowed to sleep.  This was to simulate

the long hours that sweatshop workers have to endure.  The students found that by about 3am in the morning it was getting difficult to count the right number of beads for each decade!  The rosary beads were given to parishioners of St Luke’s parish in Flat Bush at the Saturday morning Mass.

• You could organise your participants into shifts to cover the 24 hours of the Challenge. Allow flexibility for those who may be unable to commit to staying for the full 24 hours.

• The products you choose to make must be relatively easy to create, cost effective and appealing to your students.

• The activity chosen may depend on resources available and the skills of your leaders.

• Decide where you will sell your products, e.g. after Mass, at a local market or online.

• Try to access the materials for your product at a low price, or better still, see if you can find someone to donate them.

• If participants are going to be making creative products, try to have three or four different stations each producing a different item. Participants can rotate through their shift.

• Students can be sponsored for the hours worked, the number of items made or given a lump-sum for the 24-hour Challenge.

EXAMPLE: BARADENE COLLEGE, AUCKLAND

For the past two years Baradene College has run a Caritas Challenge day for all Year 10 students. This is a school day with a difference. Students come to school with no food and they have no classrooms.

Instead students experience what it might be like to live in a different country with a different standard of living. Students give up using technology for the day and

eating what they want to eat. The food technology department provides a simple meal to replace their ordinary school lunches. Visiting the tuckshop is not allowed!

The day also includes a Sweat It Challenge, with students competing to see how many paper bags they can make in a limited time period.

• Encourage students to use the time they would normally spend on the thing they gave up, helping someone else or improving the local environment.

• Some participants may choose to go without something on an individual basis at home for the duration of the challenge, but it has more impact and potential for raising awareness if people join together to stop something for 24 hours.

• Make sure there are a number of planned events or activities to keep your participants occupied for the duration of the Challenge.

• Instead of giving up all food for 24 hours, consider having a basic diet of rice and water.

HOW TO ENGAGE YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY• Display the Caritas Challenge posters.

• Advertise in your school notices.

• Join us on Facebook and post information about the Challenge on your school’s social media site.

• Ask your parish priest to say a Mass for your Caritas Challenge.

• Fundraise for your Caritas Challenge by selling items after Mass.

• Speak at school assemblies, providing updates in the countdown to the Challenge. See below for a list of assembly topics.

PRE-CHALLENGE ASSEMBLIES

ASSEMBLY ONE A week before the official launch of the Challenge, student leaders can speak for 2-3 minutes at assembly, informing students about the theme of the Challenge and telling them the dates of the Challenge.

ASSEMBLY TWO A 5-10 minute official launch. Students show the Caritas promotional video outlining information about Caritas work in Cambodia. Students are told how they can be involved in the event.

ASSEMBLY THREE A 2-3 minute reminder for students to get sponsorship for the Challenge. Ideally this would be a week before the Challenge event. Perhaps lead an assembly prayer with images of Cambodia from the Caritas website.

ASSEMBLY FOUR An update two weeks after the event, including a reminder for people to get their sponsorship money in.

ASSEMBLY FIVE A thank you to all those who participated in the Challenge and information about how much was raised and where the money will go. It’s also a good time to thank specific people who helped to run the event and commend the participants for their level of enthusiasm and commitment. SOCIAL SCIENCELEVEL 1 AS 91042 - REPORT ON PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT IN A SOCIAL JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTION

The Social Sciences departments of St Dominic’s College in Auckland and Aquinas College in Tauranga have developed assessment tasks around this standard. Students are required to organise their own Challenges in small groups and then report on what they did and how their involvement in a Caritas event promotes social justice and human rights.

LEVEL 2 AS 91282 - DESCRIBE PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT IN A SOCIAL ACTION RELATED TO RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Students can use their experience of participating in the Caritas Challenge to describe their personal involvement in a social action, as per the requirement of this achievement standard. Caritas Challenge is about taking action to raise awareness of social injustice, human rights and environmental rights.

GEOGRAPHYLEVEL 2 AS 91242 - DEMONSTRATE GEOGRAPHIC UNDERSTANDING OF DIFFERENCES IN DEVELOPMENT

This Level 2 external achievement standard looks at aspects of development, particularly at differences in the way in which diverse communities develop. The standard asks students to look at the role of non-governmental organisations, such as Caritas, in reducing differences in development. The Caritas Challenge, often with a focus on community development in a particular country, might act as a springboard to student engagement in this topic.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONLEVEL 1 AS 90818 - DESCRIBE THE APPLICATION OF THE KEY ETHICAL PRINCIPLES OF A RELIGIOUS TRADITION TO AN ISSUE

Caritas is the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ agency for justice, peace and development and is inspired by Scripture and guided by Catholic social teaching. Caritas works for a world free of poverty and injustice through community development, advocacy, education and emergency relief. Students can look at how Caritas applies Catholic social teaching principles in our work to alleviate poverty and injustice.

LEVEL 2 AS 90822 - EXPLAIN HOW A CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL ACTION DERIVES FROM THE ETHICAL PRINCIPLES OF A RELIGIOUS TRADITION

Many schools offer this standard in Year 12, focusing on a particular project Caritas is engaged in overseas. Students research how the ‘action’ of Caritas reflects one or more of the Catholic social teaching principles. The Caritas Challenge can be a good springboard to this unit of study.

Schools might consider looking at the way in which Caritas runs the Caritas Challenge itself as a ‘social action’. How is this motivated by Catholic social teaching principles?

THE CARITAS CHALLENGE IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE THROUGH FUN AND MEANINGFUL WAYS IN THEIR SCHOOL COMMUNITY. GET CREATIVE AND MAKE LASTING MEMORIES TOGETHER!

For younger students, it is recommended that activities last for less than the full 24 hours. Some events will work best for the whole school during school hours. Other activities might be more suited to take place after school - even overnight. The

Caritas Challenge is great in terms of its flexibility; any event will work, regardless of the age of the participants, the size of the group, or the nature of the Challenge.

This year, students are asked to stand in solidarity with the people of Cambodia. The following pages provide some ideas for a primary school-based event for each of the four themes.

STEPS

START ORGANISING:

REGISTER your group for the Caritas Challenge online and we will send you the enrolment materials, including templates of permission forms and RAMS forms. Make sure only one person from your school registers. This can be a teacher or a senior student leader.

MEET with your student leaders and decide on who your key co-ordinator is. Watch the Caritas Challenge video and look at the Caritas resources on Cambodia, and discuss the challenges many people are facing in Cambodia.

DECIDE what Challenge(s) you would like to do: Move It, Live It, Sweat It or Stop It. Start to gather your activity ideas.

SET A DATE and allocate tasks to different members of your group so everyone is involved and has a part to play. Tasks that need to be done include promotion of the event, processing of enrolments, overseeing the timetable for the event etc.

• Join us on Facebook to connect with other youth around the country! WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/CARITASCHALLENGE

DURING SCHOOL:

SET UP SOME RELAYS AMONGST CLASSES where students have to carry heavy water containers from one end of the school to the other.

MEET AT A DESIGNATED LOCATION BEFORE SCHOOL and experience a long walk to school together to simulate walking long distances to access education.

PREPARE A SIMPLE SHARED LUNCH FOR STUDENTS, but they have to go for a long walk to get to it. They either have to walk off-site and back with a teacher, or the food is located off-site at a nearby park.

ORGANISE FUN TEAM RELAYS involving walking and running, and get students thinking about the distance Cambodian students have to travel to get to school.

SET UP A RUNNING TRACK (e.g. 400m) on the school field and have a running Challenge where students can complete as many laps as possible (using team batons or all at once) within a given time. Count up all of the kilometres run by your school and discuss distances in New Zealand and Cambodia.

AFTER SCHOOL:

ORGANISE A SPORTS TOURNAMENT on Friday afternoon or Saturday. Students need to keep moving throughout the Challenge. Even when they are not playing they have to be practising or warming up on the sideline.

MEET AS A SCHOOL ON SATURDAY MORNING and become a ‘walking bus’ around your community streets. Sign up sponsors based on the distance covered.

St Joseph’s Primary School in Fairlie spent a day experiencing the life of a Filipino child. After learning about how some children in the Philippines have to walk

long distances to get to school every day, the students at St Joseph’s did a Move It Challenge and completed a long walk in solidarity with these students.

EXAMPLE: ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, FAIRLIE

• Plan the activity for a realistic amount of time so that it will be achievable for students, but also long enough to be a challenge.

• Make sure students choosing a Move It Challenge involving food have adequate nutrition and hydration to keep them going.

• If your event involves tiring physical activity, take turns during the duration

of the Challenge and ensure participants get a chance to have some rest.

• Contact local businesses within your Catholic and wider community to see if they will sponsor you.

• If your event is outdoors, make sure you have a back-up plan for bad weather.

DURING SCHOOL: CLOSE THE CLASSROOMS and have lessons outside under a make-shift shelter to simulate the loss of school buildings

AFTER SCHOOL: BUILD TEMPORARY SHELTERS from cardboard and sleep in the hall overnight.

USE TARPAULINS TO CREATE MAKE-SHIFT TENTS outside on the field and sleep in them overnight.

USING LARGE BOXES, form a structure around a trampoline in the backyard and sleep under the trampoline all night.

EXAMPLE: ST MARY’S SCHOOL, BLENHEIMIn 2015, senior students at St Mary’s School in Blenheim completed their Challenges in small groups. Many of the groups slept overnight in their backyards in tents and tarpaulin structures under trampolines. Students had lots of fun and became more aware of the realities of living in shelters without the normal luxuries.

TIPS:• Make sure students realise they will

need plenty of material to build their shelter if it is made of cardboard or tarpaulins.

• In tents and shelters it is important to have some ground insulation to keep bodies warm during the night. Even newspaper works well.

• Make sure you recycle your materials after you use them and take care of the environment by tidying up rubbish.

• Make sure students have lots of string or masking tape to secure parts together.

• An open air context provides authenticity. On the other hand, a dry alternative venue like covered eaves or corridors is a viable alternative.

• For big groups, ensure you have activities and games planned during the event to keep your students busy and entertained.

• Make sure students are prepared with plenty of food and water. Sometimes in the excitement of the event it is easy for them to forget to look after themselves.

DURING SCHOOL: WORK IN SMALL GROUPS during the school day to make items (like cards or necklaces) that could be given or sold to others

STUDENTS ARE GIVEN THE TASK OF CLEANING UP THE SCHOOL. This includes inside the classrooms and the outside environment.

DURING LESSONS, GET CLASSES TO MERGE TOGETHER so students experience large student numbers in one class.

STUDENTS ORGANISE A SCHOOL GARAGE SALE and take responsibility for collecting goods donated by the community. The demanding work includes setting up stalls on the day of the event to sell the items to raise money.

AFTER SCHOOL: IN SMALL GROUPS, STUDENTS CAN BAKE items to sell at school the next day.

UNDER SUPERVISION, STUDENTS CAN BOTTLE THEIR OWN PRESERVES and sell them to the community.

WITHOUT COMPLAINING, STUDENTS COULD DO ALL THE FAMILY HOUSE WORK BY THEMSELVES (including the dishes, washing and cleaning) for an entire weekend.

St James’ Primary School completed a Sweat It water Challenge by carrying heavy buckets of sand around their school field. They filled the buckets with sand instead of water so they didn’t waste any water, but also to stand in solidarity with the children who have to

carry very heavy buckets of water every day from a well to their community. Each class took turns walking around the track with the buckets. There was always someone on the track throughout the entire day!

EXPERIENCE AN ELECTRICITY-FREE DAY at school with no lights or screens (except if interactive whiteboards are required for learning!).

STUDENTS HAVE TO BE SILENT for the entire time at school and can only communicate by writing down messages.

STOP ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION by picking up rubbish, planting trees or creating a recycling/composting bin.

AFTER SCHOOL:

STUDENTS COULD BE CHALLENGED TO HAVE A MINI-FAST: to go without food until the next morning. They should still be encouraged to drink water.

LIVE WITHOUT ELECTRICITY or batteries at home for an entire day: no televisions, computers, music, phones, lights, hot water etc…

TAKE UP THE NO-JUNK-FOOD CHALLENGE and give up certain foods and unhealthy snacks (like chocolate, lollies and ice cream) for just a day or a whole weekend.

EXAMPLE: ST DOMINIC’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL, AUCKLAND

• Encourage students to use the time they would normally spend on the thing they gave up helping their parents or friends.

• Some participants may choose to go without something on an individual basis at home for the duration of the Challenge, but there could be more

impact if a class joins together to stop something at the same time.

• If students have given up something at school, then make sure there are plans in place to help them succeed.

• Instead of giving up all food, consider having a basic diet of rice and water.

• Consider whether it is realistic for your youth group to do a full 24 hours, based on the age and abilities of your group. If not, try a 4, 6, 8 or 12-hour Challenge instead.

• Please ensure your participants have enough food and water to stay healthy. We don’t want any injuries.

• With any physical activity, take turns during the 24 hours and ensure participants get a chance to have some rest.

• If you have an event where you need to provide a rest or sleep area, consider what facilities or arrangements you have for them to do this.

• Wear a pedometer to track how many kilometres you have done.

• Contact local businesses within your Catholic and wider community to see if they will sponsor you.

• If your Challenge is outdoors, make sure you have a back-up plan for bad weather.

• Please consider the wellbeing and health and safety of your participants - this should be a priority.

In 2015, Challenge 2000 ran a Live It Challenge by creating a ‘Challenge City’ out of cardboard boxes and slept in it overnight. They also organised lots of fun activities to keep themselves entertained,

as well as some prayer reflections on poverty and injustice in the Philippines. They even had a visit from Cardinal John Dew!

EXAMPLE: CHALLENGE 2000, WELLINGTON

• Make sure you have plenty of materials to build your slum or cardboard city - don’t underestimate the amount of cardboard you will need!

• Newspaper is an excellent insulator - use plenty on the ground, as the chill comes from the ground up not from the cold air.

• Make sure you recycle your materials after you use them and take care of the environment by tidying up rubbish.

GUYS youth group in Ka-piti had a Sweat It themed Caritas Challenge in 2015 by baking and bagging goods to sells after Mass on Sunday. They also sweated it by working hard outdoors in the garden around their church.

EXAMPLE: GUYS YOUTH GROUP, KA- PITI

• Organise your participants into shifts to cover the 24 hours of the Challenge. Allow flexibility for those who may be unable to commit to staying for the full 24 hours.

• The products you choose to make must be relatively easy to create, cost effective and appealing to your participants.

• The activity chosen may depend on resources available and the skills of your leaders.

• Ensure you have a suitable venue booked to run your particular activity.

• Make sure you have access to sustenance such as food and water.

• Participants can be sponsored for the hours worked, the number of items made or given a lump-sum for the 24-hour Challenge.

• Talk to your local St Vincent de Paul or other church charities to see how you can help others in your community.

STAY Youth Group had a dynamic Challenge involving all the elements of the four themes. They slept out in the cold, and stopped using technology for 24 hours. Their innovative ideas for the Stop It Challenge did more than just help those in the Philippines, they also gave back

to their own community by helping the Christchurch homeless. STAY cooked and served breakfast down at Latimer Square for those who did not have a home or food. They helped stop hunger!

EXAMPLE: ST ANNE’S STAY YOUTH GROUP, CHRISTCHURCH

• Use the time you would normally spend on the thing you gave up helping someone else or the environment.

• Some participants may choose to go without something on an individual basis at home for the duration of the challenge, but it has more impact and potential for raising awareness if people join together to stop something for 24 hours.

• Make sure there are a number of planned events or activities to keep your participants occupied for the duration of the Challenge.

• Before choosing to go without food, ensure participants are not suffering from any health conditions that will stop them from taking part. Fasting should be optional.

• Fun sport activities, games or even giving up your time to carry out some community service are all possibilities to include in the Stop It Challenge.

• If you are planning on fasting make sure you drink water to keep hydrated.

HOW TO ENGAGE YOUR LOCAL CATHOLIC COMMUNITY• Display the Caritas Challenge posters.

• Advertise in your parish newsletter.

• Join us on Facebook and post information about the Challenge on your own social media site.

• Ask your parish priest to say a Mass for your Caritas Challenge.

• Fundraise for your Caritas Challenge by selling items after Mass.

• Pray for a successful Caritas Challenge.

• Speak at Mass to update the parishioners on your plans. See some examples below.

PRE-CHALLENGE MASS UPDATESThree weeks prior to Caritas Challenge, give an update at Mass about what you are doing for the Caritas Challenge and how parishioners can support you through prayer, participation or by sponsoring you.

IMPORTANT: Caritas Challenge is primarily about raising awareness of social injustice, so use this time to educate your parishioners about the social injustice in Cambodia and what Caritas is doing to help alleviate these issues.

MASS 1 Introduce Caritas Challenge as an annual nationwide event for youth run by Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand. Explain what you are fundraising for and where the money is going (use pages 6-19 of this info book or visit the website for more information WWW.CARITAS.ORG.NZ/CARITAS-CHALLENGE). Let your parishioners know when your Caritas Challenge event will be and how you would like them to help you.

MASS 2 Give a reminder about Caritas Challenge and an update on what Challenge you have chosen to do and the activities you will be doing. Remind parishioners

they can support you through prayer or by sponsoring you. Direct them to your Caritas Challenge coordinator for more information.

MASS 3 Provide a final reminder of your Caritas Challenge details. If your parish is doing a Caritas Challenge Mass, invite the parishioners to attend. Ask your parishioners to join the Caritas Challenge Facebook page and follow any updates on the event

POST CHALLENGE UPDATE Either speak at Mass or put a notice in the parish newsletter about how your Challenge went. Maybe show some pictures of your participants doing their Challenges. Thank everyone who was involved and your parish for their support.

ALTERNATIVE FUNDRAISING OPTION: EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Often school and youth groups see the devastating effects of natural disasters around the world on television or through social media and want to help. The Caritas network is one of the largest humanitarian networks in the world, and it enables us to respond to emergencies around the world. We aim to save lives, reduce suffering, maintain human dignity, and meet people’s basic needs - regardless of ethnicity, religion or nationality.

In emergencies, we respond to the needs of the people affected and the requests of our development partners, as well as through the Caritas network. Wherever a disaster occurs, one of our partners will be there, coordinating local people and supplies to provide an effective and efficient response.

Humanitarian agencies like Caritas have a model that helps us to plan how best to meet the needs of people who have suffered from a large-scale disaster. The model is called the emergency cycle, which is depicted here.

When a disaster hits, Caritas is involved in each phase of the emergency cycle to RESPOND immediately, help people RECOVER, reduce the risk of future disasters through MITIGATION and begin to PREPARE for the next inevitable disaster.

In 2015 the Caritas Challenge was focused on Building Back Better in the Philippines, after this nation (which is extremely vulnerable to natural disasters) was affected by two massive typhoons. The money raised through the Caritas Challenge helped fund Caritas projects in the Philippines.

Around the same time of Caritas Challenge 2015, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal affected more than 8 million people. This came just weeks after Cyclone Pam caused so much destruction in Vanuatu. Our Catholic Community heard the call to action and wanted to respond by raising funds for the Caritas emergency response work in Vanuatu and Nepal.

It is likely there will be a need for a Caritas emergency response in 2016. If this happens, the option is open for you to donate your Caritas Challenge funds to a current emergency. Follow Caritas on social media and check out our website for updates on our emergency responses around the world.
