Text messages & attendance It is important that students are attending school regularly in order to keep up with the demands that senior school brings. Thank you to those parents who are notifying the school and replying to the SMS messages which are sent to alert you to your child’s absences during the day.

Late arrivals

Students arriving at school after the commencement of the day need to sign in and provide a specific reason, such as “late because the car broke down” or “late because I slept in”. When a reason is given students are marked as a notified absence up until the time they sign in and no text message will be sent.

However, students who provide no reason are marked as an un-notified absence until the time they sign in and a text will be sent. You are welcome to send a note with your child in regards to absences which will be processed by reception staff.

Students signing out

If a student needs to sign out for appointments or some other reason, they do require parental permission by means of a note or phone contact with the school. Those students who have no permission, that the college is aware of, will be marked as an un-notified absence for the lessons missed and a text message will be sent to parents. College Recycling Program For over three years, the College has been recycling drink containers to decrease the amount of rubbish going to the tip and to enable the used containers to be made in to other products. This year the Senior Workplace Practices class is managing the program and with the funds raised through cashing in the drink containers, they have arranged for the College to sponsor a child from Nepal. Nepal is a country to the north of India and the home of Mt Everest, the highest mountain in the world. Binjana is 12 years old and there are nine people in her family. She lives in Maharaigurj (see red dot), a village of about 16,000 people who are mainly farmers and people who own small shops. Many people struggle to make ends meet and the inability of families to pay for their children’s health and educational needs leads to many challenges including a high primary school drop-out rate and early marriage. The students are hoping that by sponsoring Binjana and helping her family to pay her expenses and keep her in school that she will achieve a higher level of education and not be forced to marry at a young age. Skills Employment Careers Expo 2016 provided a fantastic opportunity for all of our Years 10 to 12 students to explore their tertiary study, training, career and job options with 58 exhibitors. They included specialists from a wide range of industries and occupations, to companies offering jobs, apprenticeships and traineeships. Representatives from universities and training providers were able to answer questions about higher education or training options. Our students took full advantage of finding out about how to achieve their career goals or finding out about career paths they had not yet considered. University Presentations & Industry Visit – 3 & 4 August Following the Expo, Nicolle Hancock (Flinders University) and Nita Soldic (UniSA) spoke to all year levels about what going to university is like and the student services available. Career information sessions were well attended by interested students. Champions for Change workshop – Butterfly Foundation On the 10th August, five students from our Year 10 & 11 Drama class attended the Champions for Change Youth Day run by the Butterfly Foundation. The workshop bought together students from various schools to share views and ideas on how they could promote positive body confidence within their school community. Centralian Senior College students did a great job as reflected in this feedback from the workshop facilitator “You should be very proud of your students who showed themselves to be very articulate and aware of the positive difference they can make in their school community.” The students are now using the information and insight they gained from the workshop to create physical theatre pieces that will respond to the key themes and pass on the messages of the workshop within the College. Students also developed these social media guidelines (see below) to assist young people to manage the impact of social media on their lives and wellbeing. How to decrease TRIGGERS

• Block, unfollow and report negative, hurtful and nasty content. • Offer advice, help and encouragement. • Decrease time spent on social media. • Make a decision not to look at the things you do not like. • If you see things that offend you, simply do not engage with it and remove it from

your feed. • Don’t talk smack – think before you post. • Do not post what you would not say in real life. • Question your reasons for posting pictures and comments: remember, your value is

not related to appearance. • Check privacy settings on all Apps.

How to increase INSPIRATION

• React positively or do not react at all. • Share stories of victory and those that make you believe in yourself. • Give encouragement to people for their achievements, talents and skills. • Follow the stuff that makes you feel great about who you are. • Look out for your friends and peers on social media, just as you would in real life. • Use social media to learn about other cultures, ideas and beliefs. • Share the funny stuff. • Show your own strength in character through what you post. • Share inspirational quotes.

Not sure how to best support your child with their senior studies? How can you help them with their Homework? Are you worried about them meeting assessment deadlines? Encourage them to attend the Centralian Senior College Study and Enrichment Centre for all of the help they need. Many teachers, parents and students are feeling under pressure at this point in the academic year. It is critical for all students to ensure that they are up to date and doing the most that they can do to maximise their future opportunities by achieving excellent results. Assessment tasks are currently due or even overdue. I continue to be amazed by the enormous range of support mechanisms available to students. One of the most important resources is the Study and Enrichment (Homework) Centre at Centralian Senior College. It is available to EVERY student and runs four nights per week from 3.00pm to 5pm on Monday to Thursday inclusive. Teachers and tutors are on hand to provide assistance to students and access to computers and specialist areas. Hot and cold food choices are served for afternoon tea and the school bus provides transport home. All of this is absolutely free of charge. Please encourage your child to make full use of this wonderful facility. Students are free to attend as many or as few of the afternoon sessions as they need to in order to meet deadlines or catch up. Please encourage your child to attend. Michelle Francis

Year 11 Research Practices students visit Adelaide….

With the generosity of the NT Department of Education and the College, as well as with our parents dipping into their pockets, we, the Stage 1 Research Practices group were able to attend the SACE Research Project Expo in Adelaide. This trip was designed to enhance our knowledge of the Stage 2 / Year 12 Research Project subject and provide us with ideas to help us in understanding the Project. In Week 6 there is a Subject Selection Expo at CSC and we will be on hand to talk to other students about this subject option. While in Adelaide we also received exclusive tours of three major Universities. Each university tour included an extensive amount of information about the courses and possible careers they offer, however, we were a lot more astonished at the beautiful and unique aesthetics of each university. We also visited Adelaide Pathology and the Adelaide Institute of Business and Technology. It was inspirational to have this opportunity. The Research Practices class would like to thank Mr Collins for seeking financial support from the NT Education Department for this trip, and also the College for contributing to our funding. We’d like to say thanks also to Mr Ken Davies who approved the funding from the Department – and our parents who also supported this trip. Finally, thanks to Mr John Cooper who gave up his time to support our teacher Ms Channing.

Year 10 ASPIRE excursion to Darwin Before the final session at Charles Darwin University our groups considered what they had accomplished and how they had worked together on the trip. On Day One students had set themselves short term goals about communicating, helping each other out, working together, being responsible, growing new friendships, looking out for each other, including everybody, being on time, down to “Don’t take too long in the shower!” Jane Hunt, Deb Batty, Emma Bugden and John Cooper joined twenty year ten students for the ‘Aspire’ trip to Darwin; to learn about community life on a university campus, what support systems there are, what living quarters are like, how lectures run, what do current students and staff say. “Is UNI for me?” Barry Jonsburg, novelist of teenage books, entertained us as he spoke of the long road to acceptance as an author before Ambassadors told their stories; Rikki, a young mum now close to completing her Engineering Degree, Mark having had several starts at courses, now studying law. Free choice of dinner at Casuarina Shopping Centre! Friday was the Berrimah Farm and Darwin Aquaculture Centre visits. Mixed reactions were reported about the smells, growing red & tastier apples and the “best” rice, but many were impressed by; the sea cucumbers, clams, golden snapper, barramundi, algae growing and fish dissection. The aquaculture theme continued when we fed fish at Doctor’s Gully next morning.

“It was fun when everyone on the bus chased Pokemon”,

Lunch and shopping time at Casuarina Shops was welcome before packing for Club Tropical Resort. Dinner was at the Casuarina Club. At the official start to the Open Day, Emily was the lucky student, winning the door prize - a laptop! We heard three university students tell of their aspirations nearing fruition. Our students spoke of their discoveries at CDU noting; Chinese Garden, huge trees and lots of shade, holding a baby croc, psychology talk, Chefs and Bakers, play therapy, face painting, good food, all the reptiles, meeting lecturers, Oculous Rift (virtual reality system), Paw Patrol Performance. Tropical dinner at Mindel Beach concluded the day. Building an APP was the hands on opportunity at CDU next morning. Then it was off to the World War II Tunnels, the Wave Pool and finally dinner as the sun set at the Darwin Sailing Club. We assembled electric motors at the final CDU session as Rob, lecturer, gave information about the “Best” Engineering Degree in Australia. Exemplary behaviour, supportive and caring acts, intelligent questions, many opportunities for learning and fun with hard working adults are features that sum up the Aspire Trip 2016. Well done all.

Monsters on the Run

Monsters have been sighted around the college making the most of their location. These colourful characters just want to have fun learning how to be a monster. Strange noises can be heard down corridors and from behind doors.
